Hey everybody - I heard a rumor that Cam had a crush on the penguin from the movie Happy Feet! Wait, huh? what? You mean it wasn't THAT penguin? :teeth:

Terri

Very cute, Terri! Can you believe I haven't see that movie yet? Penguin lover that I am, :confused3 :confused3

Thansk for teh article, I think, dave. One key that they seemed to have missed there is that very often stress tests are not performed long enough on those that are phydsically fit. My dad had a quadruple bypass six months after passing a stress test with flying colors. They just did not push him long enough. One thing you really want to make sure of when you start gettign tested. FYI - Jim Fixx lived longer than anyone else in his family dur to genetic heart problems. Not saying to ignore this, but don't let it get you too wroked up pre-race either.

Oh no, I'm not worked up about it at all. In fact, I thought the article was pretty fairly written. The point I took from it is to see a doctor and have a stress test before starting this training experience (which I have not really done). I saw a doctor, he know's I'm training for a marathon, but he never once suggested I take a stress test.

I like to think we're still a bit young to need them yet DAve. :rolleyes1

Carrie - I saw that video clip a couple months ago and it made me laugh so hard. I should have posted it then, but my brain didn't make the connection. Glad you posted it, now is a better time for the looniness anyway!!!

I would love to be in the VIP tent, staying all nice and toasty with a potty. Oh and the bagels. But the cost is what gets me. $50 seems high for an hour and half of warmth. Plus, don't you miss out on the experience???

That's what Chad keeps telling me.
All I want to do is sleep in my bed in OKW for as long as I can, then walk over. That's all I want...really. I love sleep.

Kristi - You won't be able to sleep in that mornign anyway!

Any non-scrapbookers want to pick up some paper for me? :teeth: I'm sure it will be gone by teh time I get there on Saturday. :(

Dave

About your "feeling slower as I get fitter," I'm certain that's a function of training methods and fatigue. As you train and build your strength and endurance you can go longer and longer, but this alone won't help you go faster. That takes speed work. Plus with your crash build for the marathon, especially given your injury troubles earlier this year, I'd guess that every time you begin a run or race you're either a little or a lot tired.

What you can do for this time is be certain to back off your training during the 2 weeks before the race. It's really important to be fresh and excited on race morning, so don't run to build during the last 2 weeks, run to rest. Nothing long and nothing fast. Myself, I'll run 6.55 miles the Sunday before, do an easy lift and 33 minute bike on Monday, take Tuesday off, do an easy 5K run Wednesday, and that's it, beyond stretching and walking.

Be sure to not run or train at all the day before. Years ago I learned that lesson when my legs blew during a 20K. You see the day before I felt great and ran 5 easy miles. OOPS.

To get faster you've got to sharpen. Building the base with slow long stuff gets you ready. Then you do speed work to train your body to run fast. As Yogi Berra says, "you have to run fast to run fast." Speed work needs to be a bit faster than your target race pace, so your body gets adjusted to running easy and relaxed at speed. You vary the distance and pace of the speed repeats to train your body. Base first, then a few weeks of perhaps one speed workout per week and the results are incredible. In my case, yes 22 years ago, I was unable to go sub-40 in a 10K. Over the winter I threw in speed work, mostly 200 and 400 meter repeats on the trails and roads, and in my first 10K of the spring I came in sub-38. I looked at the clock in amazement and said, "where did that come from?"

For this time focus on being fresh and feeling confident in the starting corrals. For future events you can try the speed stuff.

Above and beyond all of this, many people find they can easily carry 1 minute per mile faster on race day for shorter races than in training. Training = tired. Races = rested and juiced up. The difference is amazing. Watch for this during the first miles of the marathon, as you'll feel you're running easy, and the first mile market may come much faster than you planned. Keep in mind you have 25 more markers to come.

Good luck.

Craig

Hi guys,

I had a great weekend on Kiawah Island with the girls. The accommodations were great, we rented a 4 bedroom villa and one 3 bedroom villa. There were suppose to be 9 of us going, but 2 dropped out at the last minute because of work.

The course is pancake flat which was nice, but seemed a little long. I was hoping to run 10 minute miles and finish in 2:10, but ended up 2:16. I felt steady the whole way, which was good. :yay:

I will catch up with everyone later!

You'd be surprised - I love my sleep! :goodvibes

I will make Chad & my Mom get extra scrap paper...no worries, Carrie!

Dave, thanks for the article. This is something to think about...Runners World had a big write up around a year ago about running and your heart...I think something that hurts runners is that they think they can eat however and whatever they want b/c they run long miles...This is just not true.
OH...And don't worry about feeling slower...as everyone has said, the taper will help you feel rested.

EVERYONE MAKE SURE YOU DO TAPER!

Carrie - The TM video was :happytv: ! I wonder if I could do that on the TM at the gym... :lmao:

WOW Colleen! Great race! Cannot wait to hear all about it.

Speaking of TM..ran 6 miles in 50 min today. Started off on a 7 then pushed it to an 8.
Will be doing my last LR this weekend...will be 20ish miles. :teeth:

Thanks Carrie. OUCH! Over all that stair climbing for the game. :(

Krista....I'm pretty sure you'll be able to spot us ;) I didn't know until this weekend that Susan was planning on it to. So it should make for some really cute finish pictures of us together. Hope to be able to see you over the weekend like so many others that I've seen the names but wasn't able to see or they weren't able to make DL.

Osbourne Lights... we'll be checking them out Thursday night. Remember to see if Santa Goofy and Reindeer Pluto are out again this year. They were just so cute! I recall the Toy Barn or is it Al's Barn? I guess that is where Woody would normally be? I had never been in that area before so the backdrop was all new for me. Hope to see ya at MGM Kristi1357!!!!

Goofyguy!!! Excellent long double runs!!! Way kewl you were able to pull out those additional 7 miles!!! Wooohooo!!!! PD for your wife.

PD to Mel and MelR for those unhappy feet!

Dave... the kitty harness is like the dog harnesses only this was much smaller. Originally I had used my dog's puppy harness which is a bit bulkier so went looking for a toy dog harness and found this kitten harness. Sadly DH tossed out the tag for the size. I had my water belt going thru the harness at his back. It's good for the race but I don't think it would work really for going to the parks. He's too far down at the waist and you'd never hear him. He's perfectly at the waist for us that he doesn't kick too much so won't become annoying over the distance. :) Can't wait to see you and your Princesses over the weekend!!!!

Carrie.... the VIP runners doesn't necessarily mean the 'elite' runners such as those racing for 1st place, I seem to recall those being bused in just before the starts. Didn't the Penguin even arrive just before the start, UGH! Trying to remember but I do think he said something about arriving and going right to the corrals didn't he? Besides those that won the race in 2006 (the Half) were from here and we frequent their store, they fit us with our shoes. They are hardly intimadating ;) They are actually very down to earth supportive. If this was NY or Boston I wouldn't even think about it but it's Disney and 99.99% of the other runners are very supportive. So with that we've registered for the VIP. 1) Warmth if it's so cold again. 2) Susan is in heaven over the potty situation, she really really hates Porta Potties LMBO 3) I've been thinking of the massage but keep chickening out of it and with it being included I'll have less of a reason to talk myself out of it. 4) TIFFANY IS REGISTERED FOR IT! LMBO No seriously! The conversation between Susan and I went about like that even listing out "Susan you remember Tiffany, she was the one at the Pin shop when we were getting out lanyards" LOL We can't wait to be amongst all of you in person and waving to everyone as we go here and there. :-D

Heather before the 2006 Half the longest Susan and I got in was 1 LW of 9 miles. Besides weren't you the speedy one at DL? I do seem to recall being left in your dust. That was you that was with Anne that I came across in the area being Main Street wasn't it? You rocked and you'll do so again in a few weeks!!!

Ok Terri teasing Cam just made me think. How many of the Penguins here bought the Happy Feet plush from Build a Bear?

Kristi1357 when I saw those scrapbook papers I was all over my travel party. Thankfully we already planned on being at the Expo when it opened. I just love the DL paper, it's just too cute!!! So I guess we'll see you at that booth and later at the lights LOL

In case I skipped over anyone thanks for the welcome back and PD for those healing or just in need :grouphug:

Kristi - I am a HUGE sleep lover myself but the combination of Disney adn marathon made sleep darn near impossible! (Heck, I didnt sleep for a weeke before.) I'd be in you debt forever if you picked up some paper for me!!!

Diane - After looking like a huge amateur in front of a boston marathoner, I know I should not be intimidated. SOmehow, it's bring back HS flashbacks fro me, though. :guilty:

Christa - YOU probably could do that! Me, on the other hand..... :rotfl: :rotfl:

Krista- COngrats on a good run! Still nto sure what my issue is, but I'm thinking one of those bands might not hurt. (Well, unless I got teh knee band. Seriousy, that is something I would do!)

OK, did 60 on the TM tonight and I'm not limping yet. (knock on wood) I feel like I have not run in forever, though. Poor dh, his TM stopped dead at 60 tonight. :guilty: Not that I try to compare :rolleyes1:, but I did feel like a big dog when we outlasted everyone else on teh TMs. ;)

Hi WISH Team!

Well, I loved that TM video!

VIP runners area?, nawww not for me. Actually, I'm a little put off by the further segregating via $$$. Oh well, I guess it's the American way. It was kinda a fun experience having everyone "suffer" together in anticipation of the start. But, that's just me grousing about "change." It does sound cozy, yummy, convenient and all. Most importantly, I'm wondering if they fill up the VIP spaces where will I get to go potty before the event?
:confused3
And, since DH won't use "special considerations" over his medical issues, I signed him up for VIP observer, but only for marathon not half. I hope it works for him and he does get to have a place to wait conveniently.

I did my 8 miler on TM yesterday (watched "Shop Around the Corner" with Jimmy Stewart). I sit here putting off TM just now. I guess I'll be headed there soon as I'm done here.

Love those Christmas lights. Wow!

Dave, thanks for posting that article. It is a good thing to ponder. I do try to make wise/healthy eating choices mostly. It is true that just b/c we run sure doesn't give license to eat poorly. I think the added stress is one to be aware and I'm not certain how one tells when one is pushing further than one's capabilities. I try to do within my training limits and hope it will get me over the finish.

Colleen, that was a great race. I look forward to hearing more.

Craig, I am with you on your advice. Very true I'd say.

Teri, cute about The Penguin and Cam, errr the penguin and Cam. :rotfl:

I like the scrapbook paper. How fun!

I'm amazed at all the info you all find. Thanks for sharing all of it!

Off I go to TM land....lalala

:grouphug: I think your amazing!!!! :cheer2:

It might be neat and it might not. If we find the attitude is bad we'll just leave and chalk it up as having learned what never to do again. Hopefully it will be fine and Susan will feel good to stretch and having the quiet potties (did I mention she HATES those? gotta love our little quirks) and will leave her finishing feeling well. I just want her January experience to be 200% better than DL where she wasn't able to finish. I know that is at the front of her mind even though she has been doing 100 times better since returning from DL. But only finishing the January is leaving her wondering if it was a fluke so if this helps her I'm behind it 100%.

BTW, Cathy is unable to join us for the race. Really sad that life has come between her and her 1st Half. :sad1: So there will only be Susan and I in the Half and Barb will be roaming in the crowds. She plans on busing to Epcot, taking the monorail to the MK watching us pass there then returning for the finish line. She's pretty geeked about it and has even been reading old race reports. She's been rather funny in recent days.

Ok now off to set Barb up with our race alerts ;) Gotta get that done finally.

Too tired tonight so just did 2.5 on the TM in 34:19. I switched to R8/W2 which makes me a LOT slower. I had a patient encounter today that's still bugging me...a guy that's been a little creepy in the past graduated to overt advances. I've requested he only see the male doc in the future...now thinking I may need to get back into the search for a martial art as cross-training

VIP tent looks interesting, but $50 seems high. I probably won't think so if it's 30 degrees on the morning of the half.

Diane...great to see you back! I've been wondering what happened to ASI's DL poster girl :)

Carrie...I LOVE that video! I think we could come up with a WISH team version :lmao: The Osborne lights are incredible this year with the choreography. The first song we saw was the TransSiberian Orchestra's Sarajevo...it was amazing!

Anne...I think y'all might just live too far north ;)

Colleen...can't wait to hear more about your race!

Dave...I'm not much older than you, but I did have a stress test last year before I started running. I have some pretty ugly cardiac family history...my grandfather started having heart attacks in his 30s and died by age 42. Mom didn't have her first heart attack until age 50. Most people would probably be fine, but with my bad genes, it seemed like a smart thing for me to check out. YMMV!

Susie...have fun at WDW! This was one of our better trips...love the holidays there!

Chester...hope you and the fam have fun too! We used to stay at the Ft. Wilderness cabins often...first place I ever made a smore :teeth:

Krista...I'm nervous about this weekend and I've done 12 miles before. It's not like this is new, but still, it's been awhile. So when can we expect our cookies and fudge :teeth:

Everyone keeps mentioning their TM stopping at 60 min...I'm going to have to check that out. I guess I've never gone that long on the TM but now I'm curious!

Good training everyone!

I was going to post that i was sure my tm went past 60mis but then i realized that i always ahve to stop for some reason in the lr's to deal w/ some issue the boy has. mostly the issue is that he wants my attention or he wants to run on the tm. i do actually think i have done a run longer than 60 w/o having to stop it, but i cant remember for sure. the other night my total was around 1:25, but i did stop to deal w/ a collision w/ the cars race track. sometimes i just slow it down to about the pace i would naturally walk and i get off and do my stuff. i figure that way it counts all my steps!!!

I have a ProForm and it stops after 99 mins, 59 seconds. Scared the heck out of me the first time it happened. :lmao:
