Happy Birthday Carrie!
  :dancer: :dancer: :bday: :bday: :bday: :dancer: :dancer:

Morning WISH Team!

I had all this stuff posted up b4 I went to sleep last night. Where'd it go? :confused3

I will be in Chat 8:30 Wednesday EST room 2 right?

I'm thinking we might want to discuss the topic of dog catching the strays. We've got a list, we can split it up and go after our MIA's

Just found this thread love the advice. I will be running my first full marathon on Oct 8 . I want to do the half or full at wdw next year depending on how this one goes. I ran my first half in may in 1:52 and was real happy and decided to do a full. I said i would never do a full and now i,m looking forward to it. A question for you guys and gals I,ve done 20 miler and doing another this weekend is this enough or one more before Oct. Do you decrease your milage leading up to the marathon and by how much and do you also do long runs leading up or stop. I,ve been doing between 15- 17 miles for the last two months for my long runs. thanks for your help Rich :thumbsup2
Rich,

Welcome Rich! Hope you don't mind my pasting your question here! You'll get more replies this way.

Many of us use John Bingham's Marathoning for Mortals (MfM) MfM has us peak at 20 miles, then taper down to 10 miles, 6 miles and 20 minutes (day before race) for our last few weeks. It seems like peaking now is a hair early, but you've been going quite far for a while. Maybe go 17, 15, 10.....?

Thanks for the b-day wishes all! Busy day, so no time to catch up with everyone, but your b-day wishes made me smile (which isvery good for a Monday morning at work ;) )

I did my 4 on Saturday. The air was too thick to breathe, but I did ok. Much cooler this am, let's hope it stays for a bit.

OK, it's training time for the full!!! Time to get serious! (Wouldn't you know I have a meeting tonight and can't work out. :( Will try not to let that happen much more, though, as it is time to get serious.)

Good morning all. :sunny:

Saturday was a rest day so nothing to report, but Sunday was my LW and I did five miles. That's the furthest I've ever gone! I did most of it at 3.6 @ 1% then ran the last half mile at 5.0 @ 1%. Didn't hurt that I was watching Legends of the Fall. Yum! Brad Pitt in that movie.... :lovestruc

Today I slept in. Yes, it's true. I was a slug.

In an unbelievable show of poor planning, my first-line, second-line AND third-line managers are all on vacation this week! Ugh!

Sunny - I don't know where we'll be but I'll find you! Uh oh, do I sound like a stalker? Didn't mean it that way. I don't know where to be. Somebody tell me the best spot. Do all we Half'ers meet up somewhere Sunday morning to support our WISH Buddies in the Full and Goofy? Anybody know? :confused3

Cam - I'm glad it went well with DD. And how cool that you saw a fox! I mean, besides Howard. Hey, NINE miles is still NINE miles! Even if you think it's a stinker. I'm impressed! :worship:

Rich - Welcome! :welcome: This is a great group.

Mel - How do you "accidentally" go to WDW? :lmao: Inquiring minds wanna know. BTW I got your email and I will respond to that too but yes that's exactly what we want. Thank you so much. I am shocked to read you were "never a runner". You are a GREAT inspiration to those of us who are "adult-onset athletes"! :goodvibes

Dave - Idiots like that make me afraid to run on the road by myself. I'm not afraid of coyotes, foxes, snakes, or any animal...OK maybe bears....but humans scare me! Wow, Dave, you're really booking! :woohoo: That's great!!!

Houstonmouse - I do about 80% of my training on the TM, for two reasons. One is because it's easier on my knees and two because I have to do it at 4:30am or it doesn't happen. As I start training for real, I'm going to up the amount of time I spend on the pavement. It's too dark to go outside at that hour, plus, see my note to Dave above, I can't get DH out of bed at that hour to go train with me. He did, however, install a tv and DVD player on the wall right in front of the TM, so now I get to watch movies (Something else I never have time to do) as I get my steps in. Works out great! :thumbsup2

Kevin - OK here you go! 20 weeks today! :cheer2:

Carrie - :bday: :cake: Happy birthday!!!:bday: :cake:

Rich, I was going to start off an answer to your question. I see Carrie has already begun. I would also recommend that you check out the "sticky" threads at the top of this forum. You will find a wealth of information there. I follow MfM and found that program really worked for me. There is similarity in other programs; you've just got to look over what you think will fit you. It would be a great idea for you to follow a tested schedule.

Kristi, I know you will be here after you've been pushed to take those steps reporting on how much better you feel that you've been kicked! You tell us.

I got up this a.m. with good intentions of starting the 20-weeks to training for the January event. So far so good, I got my Pilates in b4 work! That for me is a statement! It looks like a great day and I WILL be onto something as scheduled tonight.

I am psyched! Also left over from the magical disappearing post of late last night is the fact that I am quite thrilled that my DS#1 has announced that he will be training to participate in the full this January! He will not be accompanying me, I go too slow. He will be there participating instead of viewing! Did I say I am THRILLED!

Happy training everyone.

Well, today's the day--marathon training officially begins. :cool1: I didn't run this weekend, I took one last weekend off until January. This weekend won't be so bad, I'm running a 5K on Saturday (moving lr to Thursday), but I do have to start cross training this week. :crazy2: I don't mind cross training, but the community center we belong to is not very convenient for me to get, so it's a hassle to go there. Oh well, I guess, right?

Carrie--HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!!!! :cake: :bday: :cake: party: What a day to start training. I hope you at least ate out some place really good over the weekend.

Dave--You're a morning person, aren't you?? Good for you getting out there and getting it done. I almost got up this morning at 5:30 to run on the treadmill, and for me to even think about getting up early is a major milestone. Starting next Wednesday I have to start getting to the Community Center at 6:00 am--that's going to make for a looong day, I have church/choir practice on Wednesday so I'll leave the house around 5:50 am and not get home until after 9:00 pm. I don't like even thinking about it.

Melissa--Did you do your 1/2 Ironman? I thought about you this weekend.

Judy--Were you able to get to a running store and get new shoes?

Mel--Nope, we don't have the tickets for the game, I'm wondering if we can even swing a drive up to Pittsburgh that weekend, with Christmas right around the corner and in the middle of marathon training. I know I'll have 18 miles that weekend and I'm guessing Stephen will have 9/18 too. I know it's only preseason, but I hope my boys pull their act together, the offense and defense both look good on the first couple of drives and then they sort of fall apart. Did you watch any of the Indy/Seahawks game last night? I love Al Michaels, but I was getting really aggravated how he kept bringing up Super Bowl XL. It's been 6 months. The Seahawks lost. Get over it. :furious:

ohMom--We have another buckeye!! That makes 4 of us. :cool1:

Denny--Your dogs are beautiful! I need to update my picture of Hines, that was taken last winter and he is a bit bigger now. Although he's a shrimp--61 lbs--tiny for a lab!

Pungodingy--I know how overwhelmed you must be, but in time you'll figure out what works for you and what doesn't. For me, I eat a granola bar and a banana about an hour before a long run and then I eat about 100 calories (half a Power Bar or Clif Bar) every 45 minutes. Like Mel, I don't do the 'ades (don't like the taste), usually just do the water, but I think I'm going to have to suck up and learn to drink them. After the Disney 1/2, I only drank water and after the race, I could tell my electrolytes were a touch too low, when I did the Flying Pig 1/2 in May, I alternated water and Gatorade at every other water stop and I felt fine afterwards. It takes a while to figure out what works for you--brands, flavors, amounts, how often, etc, but it will come together.

I better get off here, I'm being chatty and my work is piling up! :badpc:

:guilty: So I've been MIA. Sorry guys. Kevin's call for all MIA runners got me LOL. THANKS Kevin! ;)

OK....so today it begins :goodvibes . Good luck to everyone on the MfM training plan who begin today.

I've been running....and getting ready for my WDW trip....we leave on Friday. A bit worried about getting all the training in during the heat and humidity and park touring and eating LOL! BUT....I will do it ;). I've been away a ton this summer and managed to stick with the running and exercising throughout. Had a good couple of runs the past week...

Thursday: 4 miles in 36:55....felt really good :)

Saturday: 6 miles in about 61:00.....a nice pace and legs are feeling good.

I'm ready :). Still doing the KBX!!!! Have a few races scheduled this fall, but mostly just rolling with the marathon training. Let the games begin!!!

Welcome to all the new folks. Sorry...gonna' take me ages to catch up on these threads since I've been such a slacker. But still :wave2: to everyone :).

Carrie: Happy BIRTHDAY!!! :grouphug:

Judy: Way to go on your 5 Mile LR. Great job sweetie!!! That's a huge accomplishment!

Dave: Nice pace!!!!! Wow! AND soooo early. You early runners amaze me. I'm lucky to get out of bed no less run! :thumbsup2

Haven't read anything, but wanted to give a quick shuot-out while I had a minute....

HAPPY BIRTHDAY CARRIE!!!!

Pungodingy - I only use Gels or Gu's on my Long Runs. I take one 15 minutes before I start running, and then one every 45 minutes during my run. You'll find that as you start going longer distances your body will use up what energy it has stored and you will need to replenish them with the Gu's or Gels.

Kristi - Glad to know I wasn't the only one who had a bit too much.... :drinking1 this weekend. Like you, definately not a lush here, except during football games. I tend to drink more during football season, and then after football season is over I don't drink at all.

Dave - I am so sorry to hear about that idiot running you off the road. I had that happen when I was a teenager running on the roads in a rural area, except I actually got clipped by the cars side mirror and had to hobble home so my Mom could take me to the hospital. Some people just don't think or care about anyone but themselves. I refuse to run on the road anymore, not worth the risk.

Paul - you ran 18 miles? and you think you are ready to start training, instead of training to train? My goodness, if you ask me you are almost completely trained!! I am running the full, and my longest run so far in my training has been 7 miles and that was this past Saturday. You go!!

Lily - I am glad that your son will be joining us all. Can I suggest you get him a WISH shirt so we can all cheer for him!!

Krista - I can't believe how tiny Hines is!! I didn't think they made labs that small. Then again I have 2 labs, both of which weigh upwards of 80 lbs, and 3 of the pups from their one and only litter weigh close to 100 lbs.

Amy - welcome back!!

Carrie -

Well, today is one of my rest days. No running again until tomorrow. Thank Goodness!! Yesterday I went to Target and my calves were cramping bad. Last night I pulled out the icy hot and lathered up my calves before I went to sleep and today they feel brand new!! Can't wait to go run tomorrow morning.

Congratuations, Carrie on your recent lap around the sun

I just got a Campmor catalog and had to laugh when I saw this item (Snot Spot It brought back found memories of farmer's blow and snotty mitten discussions, yep winters right around the corner... :rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2:

I'm going to walk a bit today. Couldn't sleep last night. Watched the clock turn 1, 2, 3, 4, 5... Don't know what's up with that. So I took a nap after dropping DS off at Y camp.

Speaking of Y camp-- Kristi, if your Y is anything like ours, you'll love it! Ours has a "Kid stop" where you can drop your kid off for up to 2 hours. You get to work out and your DS can feel like he's going to school! :Pinkbounc

Yes! Actually I've got to post on the shirt thread so whomever is doing the re-order will have me in the count. I am not going to ask if he WANTS to wear it. I'm just gonna have it for him!
:teeth:
I tried to get my family to wear one last January as "scream team" and that did not go over as an option. I'll get him in this one.

I'm siting at my desk with my sunnyshopper WISH Team mug of water hydrating b4 I leave so I can hit the ground and turn around as soon as I get home. It's time to REALLY put in those steps!

More later...

Carrie - Happy Birthday!!!! :cheer2: :cheer2:

Krista - thank's for thinking about us this weekend. I survived and I'm actually not too sore. I am a little sun drenched.

So here is my 1/2 ironman race report:

As you probably know, I tried to talk my girlfriends into traveling about 5 hours south to do a 1/2 ironman this weekend. None of us had ever done one and it seemed like a fun challenge. I really just didn't want to tackle the event all alone plus it was $130 plus travel and hotel. One of my friends suggested that since I was not really racing, but just doing the course, that we just have our own event. That sounded good to me, so I recruited my thurs. workout buddies, Sarah (EC) and Kristen and our families and we set up and supported a 1/2 IM course.

We started at about 7:20am. We were supposed to start at 7:00, but trying to get all of our drop bags sorted out and getting our kids to get in the kayaks/canoe took a little longer than expected. The lake was beautifully calm and the sun was just coming up over the trees.
ed63b443.jpg
ed637eb9.jpg

The forecast was for 40% t-showers and a high of 86. It ended up being sunny and 95+. We started out the swim by follow bouy's that are set up to prevent boats from traveling fast through the area. Kristen is a much faster swimmer than the rest, so she was way ahead. We had checked out the distance the day b/4 using GPS and we each had our families in the water in a boat beside us tracking the distance that morning. I was swimming right next to ec. We both breathe ever other stroke, so we kept seeing each other coming out of the water (I was making faces, smiling and sticking my tounge out, but she didn't return the gesture!!) Phil hollered out that we were about 1/2 way to the t/u, so I picked up the pace b/c it felt like i had already been in the water forever. I did get one leaf across my goggles, but other than that, I didn't get creeped out, which i usually do for an open h2o swim. We transitioned to the bikes at a small picnic table in the public use area and began a ride out from the lake.
ed63a249.jpg

We live in a pretty small area, so we did a short out (6.5miles) and back and did a loop at the lake where we started.
ed637a61.jpg

ed632ddc.jpg

We climbed out from the lake again and next rode to my house for a refill on our h2o bottles. (i think we were around 22 miles here). Next we rode all the way across town and did a big loop back to sarah's house for another refill and to eat. Finally a 17.5 mile out and back to sarah's house to transition to the run. By then Kristen was really slowing down on the bike and got really bad cramps in both legs. We had stopped a couple of times for her to try to stretch the cramps out, but it was just so hot that she could not recover. We had a prettly long transition to the run hoping that she would be able to eat and drink and get moving.

ed63b06e.jpg

We planned 5/1 R/w intervals. We ran the 1st 5 but then walked for the next 6. We switched to 4/2 but kristen's body was just too exhausted by then, so she turned around at about 2 miles out and basicaly finished 4 miles of the run. Sarah and I kept going but we did about 1 min walk intervals around every .5 miles for the 1st 1/2 of the run. We ran out of water about 2 1/2 miles from home but thankfully, there was a model/show house w/ water, so we refilled at the spicket and also drenched ourselves to cool down. Back to sarah's to refil and eat and then we went out on the last stretch of the run. Another 6.5mi out and back. I slowed significantly here. I think our run pace overall was around 12:57/mile, which is pretty consistant w/ my hot summer LR pace. This time, we had our husband support crew bring water about 40mins into our run. They brought enough for us to pour on our heads.
ed637f7f.jpg

We crossed the finish line that the kids had made in sarah's driveway and then had our post-race pizza celebration (when i could force myself to eat again!) I made us som cute hoodies on cafe press that read "Mean Girls Half-Ironman 2006" Believe it or not, we each won our division! Kristen took 1st pl in the red head div. Sarah in the Blonde and I won the Brunette (Sarah donated trophies from her old cross country days and we colored the hair to fit the appropriate award!)
ed63af18.jpg
ed638836.jpg

I'd say this year's event was a success and for anyone looking for a fun race in ARK, this is the one (it's free, you just have to come and bring your bike) I think it may become an annual event :thumbsup2

MelR, congratulations for winning the brunette division!!  You make all us brunettes very proud of you!!

Loved the race report, you did amazingly well considering the blistering heat you endured. By the way, loved the finish line! :rotfl:

Carrie, Happy birthday!! :bounce: :bounce:

Kristi, we love our YMCA too. We have an outdoor swimming pool that makes for great impromptu playdates in the summer.

Does anyone know when Sara will be home from her cruise? Can't wait for a full report on that.

Colleen

MelR - That's awesome!!!!!! If I ever thin I may want to do a tri, I'd like to try yours!! (Don't hold your breath, though) You and your friends/kids/dh are so fun!!!

Congratulations, Melissa! Awesome race and congratulations on your win!!! :dancer: :cool1: I am so happy for you, and I agree -- you and your friends and family are such a fun bunch!

MelR- congrats on you half Ironman
Carrie- Happy B-day!

Pungodingy- Well, I can tell you what not to do.

Apparently swimming 1.2 miles and then biking 56 while only drinking 10 oz of water(if you don't include the unmeasurable portion of Lake Winniepausakee), 18-20 oz of gatorade and 1 gel packet does NOT set you up for a very good 13.1 mile run. I got tired of my race reports being the tale of the porta potties or all about having to pee so I only drank when thirsty for the race yesterday- result was I still had to pee and seriously tanked the run.

It was the Timberman 70.3 race in NH. Started off the day w/ looking at the clock starting at 3 am waiting for the alarm to go off at 3:45 am. Got the stuff loaded in the car and it was still raining having began at about 8 pm the night before. Drove to the race site and was parked before 5 am. Wanted to be there early to get a good parking place for Mom and Grandma to be able to hang out in the car if(ha, ha) the rain continued. Set up my transition shortly after 6 am when it got light enough to see. It was mandatory to check the bike in the day before for this race so didn't have to worry much about it. Got the wetsuit on in the back of Grandma's Torrent(mom has photographic evidence of that little adventure as they are a real pain to put on a wet body.

Race was supposed to start at 7 but actually got delayed until about 7:40 for the first wave so that people caught in traffic could get to the race site and the visibility could improve on the water(insert Jaws or other ominous music here). The water was warmer than the air so I hung out in it talking to other racers until the start and then I was in the 4th wave of 11, starting 18 minutes into race time. The course was three sides of a rectangular that we swam in clockwise fashion. Headed out toward the first turn and noticed it getting pretty choppy- as in 2 ft waves choppy. What the heck? This is freshwater, lake swims aren't this rough- umm, yeah it was. Almost all 1.2 miles of it- result was a 41 minute swim or my slowest half distance split so far this year. However, everyone else was getting beat up just as bad so my position coming out of the water wasn't too bad. It had stopped raining about 20 minutes or so before they started the race. Exited the water at the end of transition that my bike was racked at but the entrance was at the other end so ran the length of transition on the beach and then the length again inside transition. Doesn't make for a stellarly fast transition time.

Bike went well. The course has a some significant climbing totaling about 3500 vertical feet but I was happy w/ my effort and w/ my split. It was cool at about 65 degrees, a bit windy(that's where those stinking waves came from) and it decided to start raining again for about the last half hour I was on the bike. The course(for the NH people) starts out at Ellacoya State Park, down 11 to 11B, up by Gilford, onto Hounshell Rd, onto 107/ Marsh Hill Rd, Leavitt Rd, then onto 106. The turnaround was out by Loudon Village. Then it was reversed except for taking Frank Been to Country Club rather than Hounshell. It goes by the NH International Speedway. I was running a set of Zipp 404 tubulars that I've rented from Fitwerx for the next 3 weeks. Very sweet set of wheels, much nicer than the Blackwell clinchers that I used for FL 70.3. I split 2:58 for the 56 mile bike. It was the 568th fastest split for the day and the finishers were 400 women and 968 males so it was pretty respectable for the course.

The run- it was really bad. Transition was again pretty slow because my feet were sopping wet so I used a towel to dry them before changing into running socks and shoes. Those things were still dry because I had used my 13 gallon transition/ trash bag trick again that I used for Mooseman HIM(also done in the rain). The course was 2 6.5 mile loops of out and back along Lake Winnie. On the plus side it was nice and scenic by the lake, the down side was those where also the locations were the wind was most noticeable. I started off feeling okay but moving slowly and that was how the run continued. Never really felt awful but never managed to speed up either. It was pretty demoralizing because I know I can run faster- I've done it in both races and training. It was just like there wasn't another gear available to go up to- I was stuck in 1st when I wanted to be in Drive. I ended up running just shy of 2:18, or the 1079 slowest time in the field. I finished ahead of over 500 people timewise overall but only out ran less than 300 of them. It had stopped raining again by the time I finished the run and I finally got to try some Jordan's Ice Cream.

Post race I had the ice cream and a piece of pizza. We then went to Panera where I had half a Turkey Artichoke sandwich, a cup of chicken and wild rice soup, a baggy of chips, and a 20 oz fruit punch. Then about 1.5 hrs later I was feeling thirsty so we stopped at a Stewarts in VT and I got a 16 oz orange juice and a 16 oz chocolate milk. Mom asked which I was going to drink first when we had been back on the road about 5 minutes and I showed her that I already had half of each of them gone. So I thinked I tanked the nutrition for this race. It was cool enough to be good running conditions, I didn't overextend/push too hard on the bike, was fairly well rested muscular wise- I just didn't have it on the run. I've been faster in both training and prior races and the nutrition is the only thing I can figure out.

I was irritated enough at myself that we didn't even stick around for the 70.3 Worlds slot roll down because I didn't figure I deserved it even if offered. So my last triathlon for the year should be Ironman Wisconsin in 20 days. We are then doing the Army 10 miler Oct 8th in DC and then I suppose I ought to start training for Goofy at some point since my registration got straightened out.

I(Mom and Grandma actually) had turned in the DVC Goofy application in May to the Disney Endurance folks at the 70.3 expo but no one seems to know what happened to it or at least hasn't told us. I looked at the registration lists about 3 weeks ago and I wasn't on either one of them. I then started leaving phone messages, finally sent an email which actually got a response. They verified I wasn't registered and told me to call a certain person. After trying multiple times and leaving 2 messages on her voice mail, another person finally called back to get the details on the problem. He verified the information and I had to fax in a newly filled out application last Friday but I should be good to go for Goofy. They made it right since it wasn't my fault they lost it- I had turned it in before the Goofy category filled. It can't even be blamed on 'lost in cyberspace' because the DVC registration requires a paper application. The whole process took over 2 weeks to straighten out.

Doing Dermatology this week since they asked for me and it is technically part of the Family Medicine department at the Clinic. Was interesting today- more observation than hands on at this point but everyone, no matter what specialty, see skin stuff so some more knowledge of the topic will be good.

So for anyone who has read completely through this- you deserve an endurance award:)

Special thanks to my jockstraps- Mom and Grandma- who also braved the rain, the 6 plus hours of driving each direction, and the long days.

omigosh, that totally scares me!! I want things to be nice and easy!!!
