Wk of Aug 20--2007 WISH Walking/Running Club

Melissa - Great report.

Krista - Thanks for the comment on the dogs. I've always been a dog kinda guy. After seeing Hines in your sig, I thought I should show my buds.

Lynn- Next year, skip that yucky, rainy, wetsuit race and come sweat it out (in slow motion) with us mean girls!!!!!! I'm sure we could come up w/ a hair division for you too. Maybe it could be based on length next year. What color is your hair? I can't remember if you are blonde or light brown. I'd be happy to place 2nd in the brunette div, but if you're blonde, you might have to duke it out at the finish w/ EC!!!

Mel and Lynne - Congrats on both your 1/2 IM. Remember, finishing is the important thing. Although I know you were looking for a world's spot, Lynne.

Nothing to report for me today. Still not feeling like myself. Didn't sleep well last night and am very sluggish today.

Terri

Carrie - :bday:

Judy - fabulous job on your 5 miler!

MelR - loved your Ironman! You guys are too cute with your trophies!

Lynne - awesome job on the Timberman! And yes, these NH lakes can get awfully choppy. I am always amazed at the white caps at Sunapee. Our old lake was much smaller and much smoother. We don't really tube or knee board anymore since Sunapee is so rough. I love that your Mom & Grandmother come to cheer you on. And I still have no idea how you do all that you do! :confused3

Cam - a little late, but lots of :grouphug: for dropping your daughter off at school.

Ok, I did get out there today, but not for the 8 miles I had planned/promised. I forgot I had a doctor's appt. after work. Then when I got home, I made the huge mistake of laying down on my bed with Zack & we both fell asleep until 4:30pm. Then it was time for his swim class at the Y. Then we stayed later to sign up at the Y. Then we had to get the boys dinner on the way home. On top of all that - we cannot find our mp3 player to save our lives! How the heck am I going to do 8 miles without the distraction of my boyfriend, Johnny Rzeznik?!

So, I forced myself outside at 7:30pm. I managed to do 2.5 miles in 33:27. I meant to do 3, but my feet were killing me and it was so dark I could barely see my Garmin. (speaking of, Chad tells me when I get back home that the darn thing has a light - grrrr!)

Does anyone here use over the counter orthotics? I tried mine for the first time tonight and my feet hurt at about half a mile. I don't know if this is just the breaking them in stage, or they are not right for me. After mile 2, it seemed to get better.

Hi ya'll!

Checking in for accountability here. I figured that checking in might help me keep on track. :teeth: All of your stories are very inspiring. I will try to do my best to live up to your standards.

A little about me --

I am 49 years old and have never participated in any athletic event, well, except for a little golf here and there while riding in a cart. Over the course of several years, I have managed to pack on a few pounds (ok - a lot) and have become a chair potato while playing and doing work using the computer.

A good friend of mine ecouraged me to try for the half at one of my favorite places in the world - WDW, of course. She knew that if I had a worthwhile goal (other than saving my life by becoming healthy ;) ) I might be inclined to get out of this chair and try to live a better life style.

I'm not a runner, never have been. I do walk every now and then (in addition to normal walking) but not more than 3 or 4 miles at a time. However, I'm willing to try. I'm willing to try for my health.

So far, training to train has not gone very well. Long story. However, I have a new trainer, Jaimie, who is very energetic and totally has faith in my abilities. I think we'll make a good team. :goodvibes

For today, I did cardio for 35 minutes and did strength training with Jamie for one hour. I have another appointment with him tomorrow and Thursday. Jamie is actually giving me 3 free training sessions this week to see if I like his style. How nice is that! After this week, if all goes well, I will probably see him twice a week until I can feel comfortable doing all of this on my own. Keep you fingers crossed, for me. :teeth:

Hi Team,

Just checking in really quick for right and hopefully - I will be able to catch up with things relatively quickly tonight. :goodvibes

Did 4 miles tonight - 1 mile walking at a 3.9 pace (15.15 min/mil), 3 miles at a 5.0 pace (12.00 min/mil). I think I might speed it up a little bit 12.00 min/mil is getting a little boring - although, I'm just trying to keep in tune with what me and my friend agreed to run at during the marathon/half-marathon.....plus the United Technologies Half Marathon.

Okay - off to check posts.

Sunny – glad to see you back on regularly :thumbsup2

Paul – Great job on the 18 miler

Monte – Great job on the 6.37, wow pretty fast walker

Happy Birthday Carrie! :bday:

Wow – Judy, you go girl – way to go with the long run :woohoo: :woohoo:

Amazing Melissa! Thanks for sharing the pictures and the fantastic report. Congrats! :cheer2: :cheer2:

Lynne & MelR-- great race reports! MelR I can't believe you guys pulled it off in that kind of heat, with kids and everything! Lynne-- sorry to hear you weren't properly hydrated/fueled but you still did great.

Lilly-- congrats on your son running with you. He may be a bit ahead of you, but you're still running together :cloud9:

I accidently did an 8.12 mile walk today. I planned on 4-5. I thought I could cut through a neighborhood I've never been through and it wasn't straight forward  The good news is, I wasn't pushing at all and averaged a 15:56 pace. The bad news is that it was definitely too much. Ouch :sad2:

Kristi-- I did 8 miles without my player today! I left without it since I wasn't planning a LW. Turns out it wasn't all that bad.

I go for my "consultation" for the epidural tomorrow. It looks like Lahey scheduled me for the actual shot on Sept 6th. That's a long ways a way.

Sunny

:cheer2: :cheer2: :cheer2: Jodi-- Congratulations on makeing WW LT! Our anniversaries are only 5 days apart, but I've got some work to do to get back down to mine (and then surpass it).

Sunny

Sunny, Here's hoping that the consultation sees that you desperately NEED that shot!!! pixiedust: pixiedust: pixiedust:

MelR, your report with pics was stellar! What an effort and I love that everyone was a winner!

Lynne, sorry you had a stonker there. Chalk it to a learning experience and I know you will do better next event! You Will! Your report was interesting for someone like me who has never experienced something like that. I cannot imagine me ever attempting that and I appreciate your experience! You are amazing! Great too that you have a good support team to get you in and out.

Pungodingy, don't get too frightened about those stories. Good days and bad days happen, but you will find you will get to the other side. You have our WISH Team!

Kristi, I use OTC inserts, Powersteps brand, as recommended by my podiatrist, with slight heel lift added to relieve that tendancy I have to achiles tenditis. I was told that there might be an adjustment time before I felt comfy. Give it a chance. If it is too bothersome, use for less time and build up your time. I was ust telling DH tonight that I may need a new set. Garmin has a light? I don't want to find out!

Terri, feel better. Sleep well tonight.

escape, sorry I don't remember your name if you gave it, don't worry about your not being a "runner." We all start. Be proud that you have begun the process. I am proud of you! It sounds like you have a great idea to have a trainer to get you on the right path. Keep at it.

Jodi, you have a great pace going there. If it feels easy during your week training it might be good to pick it up a bit. Take your time on your LRs, you are doing great!

I stepped off today for the first official training steps. DH came with me and we went for time, we each go at our own pace...then I call his cell to tell him to turn around when I am halfway through time. We walk in together as the time finishes. I love it when he is able to be there like that! I pressed myself for about 42 minutes (included warm-up and cool-down) and managed an average 13:52 pace. I had a few good "dashes" in there, but no way will I ever sustain that on LRs. I am doing it!
:yay: :yay: :yay:

Carrie! Happy Birthday! Hope you had a wonderful day! You should come try the Reeds Lake tri next year - much easier!

Mel and Lynne - wow! You girls rock! So glad Mel won the brunette division - I am partial to that myself. ;) Question for you - do you wear tri shorts or bike shorts? Could I run in my bike shorts for a 5-6 mile run?

I got my bike shoes today - woo hoo! It was a riding day, so I did that and then my bike is going to the shop to get its new pedals! Then I will REALLY feel like I belong to the club. :smooth:

I get to swim tomorrow...it is a different pool and it is COLD! Why is it that I couldn't jump into the pool when I am burning up after a run? Other than frying my body...

Yay for official marathon training! :Pinkbounc

Bekah - Lynn is definitely the tri expert here, but I wear tri shorts. I use them for adventure racing (usually paddling, mt. biking and trekking w/ navigation) and I often ride in them. I have so many multi-sport days that i just find they are easier than changing. this last pair i bought (which i ripped a hole in the first time i raced in them on an off road tri!) has four small mesh pockets for easy access to gels and i love that!! If i don't eat, I tank! My other pair disintragated b/c i wore them out!!!

Escape - ANOTHER ARKANSAN!!!!!!!! Yeah!!!!!! Where do you live?(just the town, don't worry, i didn't mean your real address ;) ) I am in Rogers. Phil (my husband) and I moved here from LR about 4 yrs. ago. We have also lived in J'boro and Searcy. I LOVE little rock!!!!!! There were a few people from ark who ran disney last yr. I think there were even some from up here. they did goofy in time it took me to do the full!! :teeth: I did goofy last yr. at the start of the 1/2 i met another arkansan doing goofy, but he was too fast for me too!!

Good morning all!!

Rich-- Welcome!!!

Amy-- YEAH!! I coaxed one out!!

Mel-- Great job on the race, and great pics! :thumbsup2

Lynne-- Sorry to hear you were disappointed, but great job with your race as well! I'm a veteran of two Chesapeake Bay Swims (and about 25 other open water events).. so I hear you about the choppy water.

Pungo-- Please don't get scared off. :teeth: Lily's got it right... we have all had some awful days and we all post about them here. As for "nice and easy"..... well, it wouldn't be as big an accomplishment if it was a complete walk in the park, right? ;)

Escape-- Welcome!!!

Well, Day 1 is done. After a loooong work day, I was proud that I managed to keep moving, get my running stuff on and get out the door. I did 35 minutes (3 run/2 walk) for a total of 3.74 miles or 9:21/mile pace. I couldn't help and compare with last year at this time and I'm pretty pleased. I do think I was a touch faster than this sine I was getting some wonky readings on my Garmin during the third mile. (There is a location on my running route where this happens a lot.) I still really dislike the timed runs, though.

I can't decide whether or not to play around with the intervals or not at this point. I do feel like I got a good workout in yesterday and I do NOT want to burn out early. If I were just doing the full, I would probably push a bit harder, but since this is Goofy and it's this early in training...well... just not comfortable with it yet.

Happy training all!
Kevin :earsboy:

melissa: way to go! that's so awesome! i just told my parents i need a new bike so i can start doing triathilons. i figure i got the swimming part down since i did it for 14 years... i've got the running part down now after the last 2 years, how hard can riding a bike be?! :rotfl2:

morning guys! i got in a nice little 3 mile run this morning. nothing too stressful. i have no idea what my time was because i had no watch on at all this morning. oh well! :lmao:

Good Morning Everyone!

Well, two full rest days were exactly what I needed. I feel like a new woman today. We will see when I step on the treadmill if it the rest makes a difference.

Ok, we are 20 weeks out so does that mean that we are all officially in training now?

Melissa - what a great story and what great fun. Congratulations on your big win!

escape - Congratulations on starting! Welcome! Keep going!

I will report back after I run and let you all know how the run went!

Good Morning TEAM: :surfweb:

OK, I accomplished Day 2 of training. I did 40 minutes of cross-training on the elliptical including a 5 min warm up and 5 min cool down. I got up at 5:00am, ate a little, and was at the gym on the elliptical by 6:00am. It felt good, but this morning training really cuts into my DIS time. I don't have time to do a proper post and reply to everyone.

Good morning everyone! Day One of marathon training is down, only a billion more to go. :teeth: I did 40 minutes on the treadmill last night 5r/1w and I ran 3.68 miles. The run itself was not that great, I'm not sure what the problem was, but I just couldn't get comfortable--my pace felt off, my shorts weren't fitting right, socks felt crooked, shoes were too loose and then too tight--I was a mess!! But I got my steps in, so that's all that matters. I'm swapping my cross training and running day, so I have another 40 minutes tonight, I may do 4/1 since my shins are sore today, I guess I have to pack away all my high heels until January. :sad2: I have something inspirational I wanted to share with everyone, I don't know everyone's religious background and I hope that I'm not offending anyone, but this helped me and I think it's going to really help me over the next 20 weeks. I was listening to our choir practice cd of songs we have coming up over the next few weeks, and these lyrics really spoke to me. The song is about life, but I think it applies to marathon training as well. :teeth: "He never said the cross would not get heavy and the hill would not be hard to climb. He never promised a victory without fighting, but He said help would always come in time. So just remember when you're standing in the valley of decision and the adversary says 'give in', just hold on, my God will show up and He will take you through the fire again."

Melissa--Awesome job on your 1/2 ironman! And congrats on your victory! I really have no idea how you and Lynne do it. You guys are amazing.

Lynne--I'm sorry that your tri didn't go the way you planned. But my hat goes way off to you for completing the tri and then getting out there and doing it again in just a few weeks.

Cruella--How did your run go?

Kevin--Great run! You run/walk and still ave 9 minute miles? WOW!!!

Pungo--Please don't get overwhelmed! Like Lily and Kevin said, we all have good days and bad days, right now everyone's really excited because we are just starting marathon training. Just wait until about November and we'll see what the tone is around here. ;)

Sunny--How do you "accidentally" walk 8 miles? That's like Mel "accidentally" going to WDW. :teeth: Good job on your walk, I hope you are feeling better now. :wizard: that you can get your shot today and not in 2 weeks.

Carrie--Did you have a happy birthday?

I better get off here, I was 45 minutes late this morning because of a wreck on the highway. 75-S went down from 4 lanes to 1--can we say :headache: :scared1: ?

Just found this board training for my first full marathon Oct 8 . I would like to run WDW in 08 if i can get the timeoff. This is great the advice and support on this board. I started running to win a family race at WDW in 2003. We used to race to KS in AK and i didn't want to lose. Is started running 1 mile and now 3 years 110 lbs later i,m doing my first marathon. A couple of questions do you use goo or other supplements i never have even on my long runs your opinons on it. This weekend i was planning on running 20 miles for the second time is this enough or should i do one more. I ve been running 15-17miles on my lr once a week for two months to get ready.thanks for any advice Rich
