Went to a Toby Keith concert, so didn't get much sleep, but still did 1 mile, took me 17 minutes...

I'm reading a lot about "gels"...anyone shed some light on these? Should I be using them? What kind? How often?

The main products are Gu, Power Gel, and Cliff Shots. They are basically a concentrated energy mixture that helps replinish what your body uses as it runs. I think it is recommended to take some approximately 40-50 minutes during long runs, but it really depends on what you feel that you need. That is why it is good to train with them so you can see how much you need and how often. They help keep your electrolyte level up so you don't feel as bad. They come in a variety of flavors as well.

Didn't get LR in Saturday as both kids had soccer practice. Today was a good morning for running - low temp & light breeze. Did the walk 2 min/jog to mile plan...
mile 1 12:44
mile 2 12:01
mile 3 11:50
mile 4 12:23
last .37 in 4.68/12:05 pace
Felt pretty good about keeping it steady. Then family jumped in car and went to Indiana State Fair. We walked around for 5 hours. Not what I would recommend after a long run, but it was fun. Will take some Ibuprofen & ice the right ankle & knee.

Dave: Do some of my running on roads too. Sorry to here about your encounter. Is a good reminder for all of us to stay aware of what is going on around us when we run.

HoustonMouse: You do want to put a few miles in on the road. Your body needs to get use to the difference in impact as well as how your ankles/feet roll & shift on uneven pavement or if you catch a patch of gravel. Plus you have to train mentally on how to set your pace instead of relying on the treadmill to do it.

Good job to everyone else for getting out there and putting in the steps! Keep moving forward, no matter the pace.

DWR? Oh, you must mean SWOGGING! pirate: Arrrrrrr, let's get the terminology right matey! ;) Seriously, I hope it helps for you Sunny. Great job on the wogging. Don't hurt yourself. We're thinking of you!

:rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2: I stand corrected! Actually, SWOGGING gives "waddle on" a whole new meaning. Penguins are actually quite graceful in the water... I am not

Good Luck Howard with that schedule. You'll have to get Lynne to delurk and give you some time management tips. If anyone knows how to get 28 hours out of a day its Lynne!!!

And to all you self proclaimed "slugs"--- NO MORE Slugging ;) :rotfl:

dennyha -- where in Ohio do you live? and is that a GSP in your siggie??

ok -- summer is officially over -- just home from the last 'picnic' scheduled -- my oldest DD had a "dachshund picnic" and let's just say the dog world is not big on healthy eating

i need to remember that in order to feel like an athlete I need to eat like one and act like one!

Just a quick drive-by post right now.

Did 18 miles yesterday in about 3:30. Was only scheduled for 16 but it was feeling so good so I went a bit farther. I think I am ready to start "training" instead of "training to train".

It now appears that my in-laws will be going to DL to be our scream team for the 1/2. This means that my DD2 gets to go too! princess: Unfortunately I am scrambling to find walking distance hotels near DL for the 1/2 for a reasonable price. I may wind up cancelling my current reservations at the Ramada maingate (which means $100 cancel fee OUCH) or we will end up staying at two different hotels. I am thinking that the convenience of all of us being at the same hotel is worth the $100. Don't know for sure yet.

Happy training everyone. Be safe!

Paul

Hi all!!

Tomorrow is the big day for me.... 20 weeks out from Marathon Weekend-- the start of "real" training. :faint: I'm rather looking forward to it, suprisingly.

Mel-- Great job on your run. And a big THANK YOU as we get into the fall for keeping this thread running over the past couple of years. :goodvibes

HoustonMouse-- Lurking less is alwayus a good thing! :thumbsup2 As for treadmill vs. pavement running-- I'm of the opinion that they are two different beasts to a point, so I might start incorporating some outdoor runs. As the weather cools down there (it does cool down there, right??), then you'll probably want to move outdoors even more.

Sunny-- Great to hear you moving again! :thumbsup2

Denny-- Great job with the runs. I honestly think you are fine for an early October half. If you plan on tapering starting three weeks out anyhow, you'll be just fine for the race.

Terri-- Your taper sounds fine by me. Cutting back on your distance is what it's all about.

Pungodingy-- Wfloyd gave you pretty much all the info you'd need on gel. I will mention that you'll want to try out a few to determine which flavor/brand you prefer. Some gels are caffinated, so you might want to play with that as well.

Disneyland Halfers-- It's official... I'm totally jealous. :teeth:

And now... a Public Service Announcement: Dear Missing WISH Runners/Walkers/Woggers-- Please check in!! We miss you all. How are things going?!? Even if you aren't really training or have run into some difficulty. We don't bite!! :teeth:

I'm sure I missed a ton of stuff from last week, but must run (so to speak) for now.

We live just east of Canton, and yes, that is a GSP. Buck is 9 years old, and a semi-retired field dog. I've taken Buck all over the country for field trials and hunting. He's a real special dog, and a great friend.

The other dog is Hogan, a 3 year old Pudelpointer. A pudelpointer is a rare breed from Germany. Hogan is also a field dog, but he's not the natural that Buck is.

Yes, ma'am! :cool1: ( <--- this is you kicking my butt)

I am going to set out my running clothes, Garmin, mp3, GU - and put those new over the counter inserts in my shoes now. That way there are no excuses tomorrow after work!

We are also going to join the YMCA tomorrow. This one has an indoor track. I don't think many gyms in the area have that. So, maybe I can start do do some more real crosstraining (than my Leslie Sansone videos). We also are joining since Zack doesn't go to preschool. He's been asking lately to go to "school" and we thought maybe he'd get his fill of other kids if we enroll him in different classes there. Then while he's in class, we can workout. Win - win for all involved!

Good evening all. I did what I said I would- I actually made it to the gym after work. :rotfl2: After working two 12 hour days in a row, my 8 hour day today felt like a breeze. :teeth:

I did my first stair work out today- it wasn't very much, but I have never done a stair master before. Holy cow! Started out slow and only did 26 floors worth of stairs, which sounds more impressive than it really is. Then I wogged 3 miles, which was much easier. There is NO way I can cheat and not train and do the stair events. It's much easier to cheat and do a half marathon. :lmao:

Congrats to everyone who got out and moved today! :cheer2:

Not lurking anymore

GU: when you are doing longer runs, you learn to eat it before you start to feel tired. I start "eating" around mile 6 or 7, but I also will drink some gatorade during the long runs and that has carbs as well. However, I am a novice and not very disciplined.....see what everyone else says.

Hi gang. Just returned from a 6.37 mile walked, took 1hr.47 mins. so that's not too bad. I have til Sept.24th, to improve my speed, for the Backroads Boulder half marathon.

Don't forget the Wednesday night chat! :rotfl:

How do you know if/when you need the gel?

There's a 'formula' of sorts in the MFM book. I don't have it at hand, but it's something like 100 or 200 calories per hour. I carry water...can't tolerate the 'ades' so I eat 3 Clif Bloks every 3 miles. I eat an extra one if I start getting a bit 'addled' (forgetting my intervals) or if I just don't feel right...this usually happens toward the end of the longer runs.

It is truly my pleasure. I would not be here if it weren't for all of you. I was NEVER a runner until I found the 2005 WISH team...now I'm trying to plan races in 50 states

Had an interesting conversation with the owner of a new running store in Bradenton. They're planning a walking club that starts off with foot analysis, finding the right shoes, etc. She says they'll discuss nutrition/hydration, proper training and gait and get the club ready for a 5K or even the Sarasota Half. They want the store to focus on the average runner, someplace folks can feel comfortable coming in, instead of intimidated. All sounded great...I may try to put some of their flyers in our lobby. Oh...and she's a nurse practitioner at one of the oncology groups in town. All very cool!

Terri...were you the one that got some Loco shoes? Do you like them? This store carries them...they're trying to get a local race organized where you get the free shoes deal. I still need to PM you with my race list!

And there are plenty of WISH bracelets available in your choice of colors...all-green or green with black lettering. Check out the thread for more info:

I was going to wait, but I don't think I'll get here tomorrow, so.....

HAPPY BIRTHDAY CARRIE!!!!!!!

:bday: party: :cake: party: :cake: :bday:

Hi Mel!

Yes I got a pair of Loco's (with lime green trim). So far they have been fine. Comfortable wogging in them and no blisters! :goodvibes

I got a cushioned type, since I carry a few pounds.

I got your list. I'm still working on mine.

Terri

Good Morning Team: :surfweb:

:cool1: :cool1: Whoo, hooo! Official training begins. :cool1: :cool1:

I'm trying out a new time to run, and I did my wog already this morning. I was up at 5:00am, had coffee and a bowl of cereal, and got to the track at 6:00am. Did 3.77 miles on the track in 42:43 min/11:20 mpm pace. I walked a lap, jogged 1.5 miles, walked a lap, jogged 1.5 miles, walked a lap, and stretched. Training plan called for 40 min run today - so as of Day 1, I'm on pace! I'm going to roughly follow the MfM run marathon training plan, but I think my long runs are going to be a 10R/1W pace. We'll see how it goes.

ooo it's someone's birthday!! HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!

well my weekend was kind of busy so i didn't get by here much, and i'm too lazy to catch up on what all i missed. :rotfl2:

i didn't run this morning because now that i've got my training schedule all figured out i go back to mondays and fridays off... whoohoo! i spent a good portion of yesterday figuring it out. and i wrote it up on poster board to hang on my wall. it's so pretty! i did my 5 miles on saturday, my sister ran with me and she kept saying that she was sorry for slowing me down. i said look, i don't really care how fast i'm going, it's not as if i'm about to sprint 5 miles, i just want to get it in and get it done and not kill myself :rotfl:

Chimera - Are you referring to "On a Shoestring" on Cortez Road at 34th Street? If so, we've had great service from them and have bought shoes for DS17, DW MrsTrx and myself. The shoes were competitively priced and the fitting and advice was exceptional. I believe the store is family owned and the Father and Son have been a great help. We'll definitely continue to purchase there.
