We also didn't find the UTMAs to be burdensome, tax-wise.
To the PP who couldn't imagine giving kids $500 (or $500 worth of "stuff") for Christmas--I couldn't imagine it, either. My gramma gave each grandchild $2 in a card every birthday. She had 29 grandchildren, it's what she could afford. We were all appreciative that she gave a little something, and remembered us all--I remember talking about it with my cousins at her funeral.
Also, I had mentioned to my MIL that $500 was too much--my youngest was 3 or so, he didn't need that kind of money. She was adamant that it was her prerogative as a grandmother to spoil her grandkids. That's why I came up with the savings account/souvenir solution. If you think about going to WDW, 4 parks = $25 per park--not an unreasonable sum. And when my kids were older, they appreciated having the money in savings.
