Wk of April 6 - WISH Walking/Running Club

Stephanie

And I recall my 2 good and fast friends from Arkansas blowing my doors off at the ticket and transport center in mile 9 of the Marathon.

Craig

So we were supposed to go camping this weekend (remember the temps are supposed to be in the 50-60's. The campground called and said they are not opening. So my fallback plan if we didn't camp was to run that 5 mile race I did last year, but I have a hunch it will be cancelled with the storm blowing in. Part of the race is on a trail (the one I run in summer) and it is all muddy right now. So my next game plan.... run on the Butt Kicker TM at home or hit the crowded indoor track. I am so sick of being cooped up like an animal!

I'm really sorry about you weather and that it has you in a rut

Sending you some FL sunshine, it's supposed to be 87 here in Tampa today :scared:

OK - so I have good news and... I have bad news.

First the good: I have eaten more today then I think I have eaten all week (don't worry it's all good) I will be all fueled up for my run tomorrow

Second the bad: My darn back and leg pain is NOT going away!!! Darnit!

More alleve and ice tonight.

Man oh man, did this week fly by, almost as quickly as the weekly thread. And again, if I miss somebody it's because I'm trying to type as quickly as I speak, if not run.....

Here's the 1st half from a couple of days ago.

Kristen & Z: Awwww, you two are so romantic. You remind me of Cam & Howard. No wonder you all are friends! I hope your remaining time before coming home passes quickly, and I just know there will be parties when upon your arrival.

Maura: I can understand your concerns about the Minnie, as Pgh weather is closer to Michigan's than Florida's. I say just drag the TM into the steamroom & get your HR really going!! :rotfl2: As for the shins, at this point I'd say take a week off; the most important thing it to avoid injury. As usual, I defer to the WISH experts, though.

Cecilia:
My being a runner has become part of who my kids are. They identify themselves through me. So its not "this is my mom, she watches Oprah and tests computer programs" but this is "this is my mom, she runs marathons."

What a great gift you've given your kids! And your DH didn't do too badly with his license-plate gift to you, either.

Amy: I hope your week has calmed down--it sounds like it was hectic with your parents being gone, all the schedules, etc. In a good way, with lots of good support from friends and neighbors, but hectic nonetheless. If you ever figure out a way to clone yourself, I'd like a copy. You have more energy than almost anyone else I know. :thumbsup2 Oh, and I thought your trail run was excellent, no matter what your body thought of it.

Carrie: Are you still sitting up straight? ;) I watched the Chi Running DVD and you were so right. As dry as the book it, it's more useful. WTG with toughing it out on your long TM run, and I appreciate how you took me through the process of bargaining & convincing yourself. That's exactly what I do! And you deserve to be proud of yourself.

Cam: I admire you so much for being able to juggle so many things, and do so with style & wit. And it's so cool that you reconnected with Jenn's former Scout leader. I know how much you value, and how much care you put into, your relationships with others. You deserve a big

Scott: Sneaking a peak at the Ohana thread? I always knew you were a voyeur. :rotfl2: Now I'm going to have to start making up interesting facts about my life. Like the time I saved the Pope's life.... Your runs & WOs are, as usual, very strong. Can I ask why you upped your mileage--do you have a certain distance you'd like to maintain, say for a race? Just curious, as I need to learn from you experienced runners the things I need to keep me on track (literally). I'll be biking to my FC soon, but right now it's quicker to walk because I'm a pretty cowardly urban biker.

Judy: Excellent news on the coughing, or rather the lack of it. Sometimes I think that's the hardest part of working out, the lingering signs of the illness. If only one didn't have to breathe...

Aloha Jeff: Speaking of breaking difficulties....VOG? Ugh. Between that and your flood advisories/thunderstorms you may need to do a little taper. You'll just have to model those WISH shirts in front of the princesses, I guess. About living in Hawaii...gee, I bet you make a lot of friends from the mainland who want to visit, too! (hint, hint) Btw, your ice-cream reminders are just what I need to get through my April training.

Lynne: I may not have gotten have those abbreviations initially--thanks to Vic and Aloha Jeff for the translation help--but congrats on the real job, the relocation, and the start of Tri season. You're incredibly dedicated and motivated. :worship: And in case I haven't said it enough before, thanks for the work on the hats & visors. Much appreciated.

Firedancer: I'll be at the Cleveland race (doing the 1/2) with my DH, DOO (who's doing the full) in May. Will you be there since you're so close?

TXAng: Awwww, those pictures. That smile! As for the mall-walking, I do it & see people of all ages walking, with and without strollers. Unless you're planning on pushing a few people off the "track" with your stroller, I say go for it. (And that judgement depends on who those people are...). I concur with Tracey about the running, though; you might want to stick to racewalking. And Cam is spot-on about the mall fan club.

CarolA: Great news on the run, both in terms of time & HR. I guess a bright-red face wouldn't match your new outfit, huh?

Stephanie: Fibber, fibber! As penance for not disclosing your race schedule, you are hereby told to take another lap. Wait. You like running, so that's not appropriate. I'll have to get back to you. I'm so glad you're enjoying your XT & your running fitness hasn't suffered--your experience is great PR for biking, Zumba, yoga & Pilates classes, among other things.

Claire: About the hunger...are you eating anything different? Exercising more? I think your assessment of your fat intake is probably spot on, but there may be additional reasons. Maybe your metabolism has kicked up a notch. Another option--I find I have the seasonal munchies--I'm hungrier in the early spring & late fall. Weird, I know.

Christa: Extra-long WO sessions? You rock! That's the kind of stress management life coaches don't tell you about!

Lily: That's a great pace in the wind. And the fact that you didn't mention that you felt like you were pushing things was an added bonus, as was the tea. :woohoo:

And here's my 2nd half. Maybe Craig's write, I do have a novel in me. Ahhh, the burden of expectation for writers.....

Craig: If you really want me to I'll tell you Florida wasn't hot & humid early in the morning...:rolleyes1 Because it wasn't. Truly it wasn't. It was quite pleasant. You've going to have great weather for the Minnie & your PR. I just know it!

Bill: I hope your Minnie goes well and that your 100% for it. I'll put the order in for the weather, albeit long distance. (Not sure what kind of pull I'll have, but hey--Florida owes me one. :rotfl: ). How is Lynne's training for the Danskin going--I know she's spoken very highly of the event.

Curiouser: Welcome to the thread--I'll be seeing you on Ohana's thread, too! :yay:

Cindy: Good luck with the icing; I think you'll still have time to recover & get accustomed to the new shoes, don't you?

Leana: As I told Scott above, I'm a cowardly urban biker. Wind, rain, hills, traffic, small animals, and dirty looks all scare me. But snow? :scared1: Interesting is not the word. You're making me ashamed of my wimpiness (in a good way). And that picture of your weather...reminds me of Fargo.

Angie: About the psychological, tired-legs, just can't take another step run. Been there, including nightmares about running after such a stonker. But keep in mind how MUCH you've been running & how well. This was just an off day, and you know some of its causes. Your body was telling you not to do it, you needed to eat, etc. That's not most of your days as runner, where you've been doing so very well. Just take it easy on your back & leg, because we want you well for the Minnie. P.S. Congrats once again on the job.

Martha: I'm happy to hear you had a sunny workout--you definitely deserve it.

Mel: I've been missing you on the boards! I'm sorry to hear about your LTO, and let me know if there's anything I can do. You, Jeff, and your whole family are in my thoughts.

Tracy: Yay for the hill work--you must really be dedicated to do them...Mount Trashmore. :lmao: Great time, too! It's actually quite a beautiful-looking place, especially without the scratch-and-sniff.

Jen: I'm sorry to hear that your brother is the "black sheep" of the family--I have a whole flock. It must be very difficult for you and all your family. Maybe he needs to spend some time with the Butt Kicker...or A Butt Kicker. As for your weather & the TM, I'm hoping the adversity will help you set a PR for your 15K. (Oh, that's right. You will set a PR--how about setting a PR that surprises you!)

Jackie: I know what you mean about wanting to do the Minnie. I feel like I'm now living vicariously through my WISHmates. Not much for motivation, though. Luckily, DOOD is my version of Jen's Butt Kicker. Maybe going to your running group would help?

Pungodingy Angie: I like Lisa's suggestion of Rocking through the Ages.

As for me: A little LTO this week, which is why all my responses are crammed together. It looks like we'll need to look for new digs before we had planned to. Not only does it interrupt our leisurely house-hunting plans, the need to find a new rental property & move might affect our summer trip to Cambridge, among other things. So I'm a little "mitchy" this week (that's moody and another, not-so-nice word combined).

However, I would be remiss if I didn't tell you a couple of wonderful things about the Disney trip. The stay at the Poly was everything my lava-lamp, Brady Bunch watching 12yo inner self could have wanted. Even though the weather was rainy (the only thing DOOD couldn't control), I insisted we lounge in a wet hammock just for the experience; the Kona coffee made up for the damp. And there were plenty of other, private adult moments at the resort that I will leave up to your imaginations. (Ewwww. Don't do that !!!)

Everything else went swimmingly--DOOD arranged ADRs at places that had sentimental value to us as a couple. We rode "our" rides. He bought us APs and made a commitment to the ToT event! (And remember, he likes Disney, but he doesn't like it like it.)

Dinner with my friends made me feel young again, as we were all incredibly youthful (or immature, take your pick)--I don't think I was the only person calling DOOD Dude that weekend. Even the server at the Ohana breakfast suggested I join the conga line with the kids--I demurred, but only because I have no rhythm.

I could go on and on, but I won't. I'll just let this photo stand in for my happiness. (I'll be posting my "I made THAT face?" pic on the Ohana thread, as I tried my fierce & fabulous pose with Stitch. He looks fabulous....)

CIMG1219-1.jpg

Oh, and proof that sometimes you just need to get away for a few days to reengergize? I've come back to a week of great WOs, including my first-ever 40 minute straight run (no RW)! :woohoo:

Hey team, I am uploading pics of my girls from their photo session last weekend and thought I would share. They had so much fun!

s42470cb107225_3_2.jpg

Hey guys!
Just popping in to say Hi! And I will not be doing the 1/2 this weekend. DSis has chosen not to do it. We both had not signed up and at this point did not want to put the $$ in it. So Monday we are doing our own 13.1 on the trails. I really don't care b/c I was just there for her and my foot is still hurting. sooooo...anywho...
I biked 21 miles today.

Leana - WOW! You are a biker chic. I am a cold weather wimp.

Angie - Good luck on the run tomorrow.

Debra - Girl! You are a posting queen. LOVE THE PICTURE! And you don't need to be afraid of biking...bee one with your bike...And I won't tell you about the jerk (a few weeks ago) who got so close to me that his side mirror touched my leg...:scared1: Just don't tell my mom...She HATES the fact I bike!

Amy - I think your run was awesome.

Scott - all I can say is WOW to your WOs...are you comming over to the Ohana team and peeking?;)

Jen - Hope the weather gets better for you.

Stephanie - I have also cut running some too. I found the same...my runs are better.

Just wanted to pop in for a quick hello! It's been a wacky past two days. Missed my run yesterday due to the plumber not showing until 6pm. I managed to get in an abbreviated workout while the kids were at science today. We had bad weather in the area the rest of the afternoon -- rather, it threatened to be bad but rain was all we experienced. Everything is calm now and the temps are finally starting to drop a bit. Waaaay to early for my house to be hitting 80 -- and I refuse to run the AC in April. Thank the Lord for ceiling fans.

The agenda tomorrow consists of cleaning the garage. Hope you all have something better planned! Best wishes to all those racing this weekend!

Kristen

Deb & DOOD,

They don't call Disneyland "The Happiest Place on Earth", and Walt Disney World the place "Where Dreams Come True" for nothing.

BUT WAAAAAAAAAAY TOOOOOOOOO MUUUUUUUUCH INFOOOOOOORMATION!

:rotfl2::scared1::laughing::love::scared::crazy2:
Jen:

Cute pictures of the Princesses, let me guess, High School Musical Fans?

TXAng: Great picture of your son.

Aww, thanks for the compliments on the photo, everyone. We think he’s pretty cute, too. I think we’ll keep him. :) :cloud9:

Maura – I hope that taking the week off from running makes your legs feel better.

Cam – Funny you should mention a fan club – Mom and I took Sean to a quilting show today and pretty much got pounced on the moment the women saw him! It was pretty amusing.

Angie – Sorry you had to bag your run, but good for you for knowing that it was time to stop. I hope you’re feeling better!

Mel – Oh, goodness, you’ve got a lot going on! I’m so sorry to hear about your mom and stepdad.

Tracy – Mount Trashmore – that’s funny! Great job on the 3.12!

Jen – Hope you get to feeling better soon! Love that photo of your girls – so sweet!

Carrie – WTG for sticking to it and finishing your hour on the TM!

Claire – Ouch! Hope you have a quick recovery from all that soreness!

Leana – I can’t believe you rode your bike in that! You’re much tougher than I am!! When does it usually start warming up for y’all up there?

Stephanie – Great job getting your XT in!

Debra – I promise I won’t try to run over anyone with the stroller! I’m so glad that y’all had a good trip. Super cute photo of you and Eeyore! Congrats on the 40-minute run.

Well, DH and I decided against doing the 5K this weekend. We just have not prepared at all. I know we could do the 3.1, but we wouldn't be able to do it well enough to want to pay for it, you know?

So I've decided that we need to find a race being held in the next month or two and sign up for it, and hopefully that will get us motivated to actually train at least a little bit.

GOOD MORNING TEAM!!!

OK - so going home Thursday night evidently paid off!! I decided to get up and do my LR this morning (I usually do them in the evenings) GUESS WHAT I DID!!!!!

MY FIRST DOUBLE DIGIT RUN SINCE A YEAR A GO FEBRUARY!!!! Yeah!! Sorry I'm a little excited in case you can't tell. The good news is not only did I do 10 - I killed it (in my opinion, for me :) ) I did 10 in 93 minutes.

Last year when we were training for all of our "firsts" I was such an emotional runner. I would picture the race and crossing the finish line and would get choked up while I was running. I haven't gotten that way in a long time.

But today for some reason I was getting that way again. First I was thinking about MINNIE last year and how much pain I was in, the soreness I experience now is NOTHING compared to what it was then. Then, I kept picturing the race, entering MGM then leaving MGM and running to the boardwalk, then the best part through Epcot and to that finish line. Then I kept picturing my DH and kids and mom and dad there waiting for me, cheering (the kids with the obnoxious green COW BELLS!!!! -- yes we need more cowbell again) I got so excited that I ran the last 1/2 mile in 4 minutes :scared1: It's amazing what adrenaline will do. Sorry my posts this week have been all about me, sometimes I just hope that things I am feeling and experiencing will help other people push through this exciting journey. Especially if this is their first time. Gotta ice the back and stretch.

Before I forget again I did want to say MEL   I am so sorry for all you are going through. I am amazed that you keep getting out there anyway.

Mel - Take care of yourself. Good thoughts on the way to you and your family.

Angie - WTG with the 10 miler! :thumbsup2

TXAng and Jen - Great pics! :)

Rainy here today. Guess I'll clean the house.

:)

Debra

Great picture with the Eeyore dude. I especially like your Brady Bunch reference. When Martha and I were in Hawaii the first time some years ago, I managed to work the words "taboo," "tiki," "Vincent Price," and "Greg" into many conversations. I never tired of it, but I suppose Martha did.

Angie

Congratulations on the 10. If you don't mind some unsolicited advice from an old dude like me, you might think about easing off some on those long ones. I've noticed your long stuff isn't much slower than your short stuff, and it really should be. I'm especially sensitive to this since I too tend to fall into my "comfort" pace, no matter the distance, so on long days I really need to concentrate and ease off the pace. This will allow you to get you long runs without much strain, keeping you fresh for your other workouts. Combine easy-ish long days with easy or hard medium distances and easy or really hard short distances, and on race day you can put it all together over many different distances.

Vic

Clean house? Manly men don't do stuff like that (please don't tell Marilyn I said this :rolleyes1 ).

Best
Craig

Good morning WISH team mates! :surfweb:

It's rainy but not as cold as they predicted. I'm letting my breakfast settle before I hit the trail. 6 miles or so for me today. Then next week 8.25 (it's a loop so I run the total rather than guessing at where to stop for 8). Then it's taper time for Minnie! Yea!

Big Vic: if you run out of things to clean, you are welcome to start on my house!

angietuck2: you are smokin' fast girl! Great job on the run!

Kristin: sorry you missed your run! Hope you get it in this weekend.

Jen117: VERY cute pictures!

deekaypee: happy to hear you had a wonderful time in Disney and I LOVE the picture!!

Stephanie: happy to hear the XT is working! I'm along running 2 days per week but I'm only working out 4 days a week. The other two days include weights and other types of cardio workouts. If I'm feeling adventurous, I might take a yoga class. Those things are not as easy as some might think! They do whip you into shape!

Leana: OMG!!! :scared1: You biked in that stuff? AND your co-worker called you a wimp!?!! I am so not worthy!!! You go girl, just don't hurt yourself.

Enjoy training everyone!

Hello fellow WISHers...

It was pretty warm this morning during my 4 miles. When I got home it was already 82 at 8:53am.

Jen: I loved the photo of your girls, they are adorable!! (I was a cheerleader in my Elementary school days!) go team:cheer2:

BigVic: Sorry its raining in that part of FL, no rain here in S.FL. No cleaning house for me today, just laundry today.:laundy:

Leana: YOU ARE A TROOPER!! I can't believe you get out in that stuff!! THen again you probably think I'm nuts getting out in 89 degree weather with a "feels like" of 98. GO YOU!!!:woohoo:

Angietuck2: WOW you had such a good run, I'm sure your still on a high about that. You did great. Keep up with the positive attitude!:thumbsup2

DeeKayPee: Hi, I forgot to answer you from before. I think it was you that was just at WDW when I was. I did my training early in the morning before the parks opened, so I never go into any rain. We went over to DTD on Sunday and was there when it opened at 9:30am. Had a good time, but the few evening we ended up inside because of the rain. I stayed at the POLY during the Marathon weekend in Jan. I hadn't stayed there since I was a kid (I think it had been 30 years since we were there). I loved saying "Aloha" all the time. I was upgraded during that stay to the Conceirge building and I loved every minute of it!! Enjoy the memories!! :flower3:

Hope everyone is doing well.

Tracy

37 and rain mixed with snow in Chicago this AM.

Went inside...this is killing me, I haven't gotten ANY bike time in six weeks, and this program is only 20 weeks long!

Anyway, got in 8 miles on the elliptical due to a faulty memory on my part regarding spin class schedules.

Have a great day everyone!

Mike

Scott: Nice pace on the 5 miler! Ek on the weather though. I'm thinking we need to set up a weather bubble that keeps it between 55 and 75 with low humidity and raining lightly each early early morning. And a light breeze with some clouds please. :cloud9: ...I'll keep dreamin'

Amy: I've definitely noticed a correlation for me that when I'm not getting enough fats in my diet my skin gets dry. It's certainly worth thinking about if you tend to go light on the fats. Also I've heard that eating a lot of Splenda can cause red skin/rash/itchiness. I guess sometimes it's worth just using the real stuff! I only have a mini thing of yogurt with splenda each day and I'm going to switch to a different kind when I run out anyway. :flower3: Good job on getting in the 5 miler even though you had to drag your body along kicking and screaming! [insert some deep thoughts about how that will make it easier later]

Leana: Whoa, what is all that white stuff on the screen? Seriously though yall who brave the snow are amazing!

Craig: hmm I don't think you are supposed to use the word "zip" in the last 6 miles of a marathon. Claire's training tips for each goal: (1) get shorter. seriously it's easier to run UP hills when you are shorter...now the down side is a completely different story! (2) Perhaps you can get someone to hand you a tophat as you come into the studios (breathable and wicking, of course....hmm perhaps with a fan in it! or a misting system). Then again there is the amazing power of chocolate that you can dip into at the studios. Yeah I know some (most) aren't fans of the chocolate aid station, but I'm all about it! Seriously though, perhaps run a bit slower on the first half or 2/3rds of the course and make sure you hydrate hydrate hydrate and stay fueled. Good luck! And remember if you want to be able to run for years to come it does pay to run smart rather than fast! (not what you wanted to hear probably!)

Jen: You should just make a quick trip down to the World! Nice and warm down here. :rolleyes1 ...any excuse for a visit to the Mouse will do! (how about "acclimating for Minnie"?) And your girls are too cute!

Jeff: :mickeybar geeee thanks  now if I could get the skinny without the chapped lips life would be grand! The nearest B&J is over 60 miles away so that's out. Hmm I think I have some Cold Stone coupons that I need to be breaking out! :rolleyes1

Debra: If anything I've been exercising less! And if it was my metabolism wouldn't that show weight-wise? Seasonal munchies....hmm maybe that's it! And I'm thinking Stephanie's punishment should be... sitting still  that would be torture! I am SOOOO jealous of you and your trip! It sounds like/looks like you had a blast. And you certainly do have a "Dear One" in your DH. :woohoo: on the AP and ToT!!! :yay: :thumbsup2 on the RUN!

Christa: Yikes! on the jerk with the car. You be careful out there!

Kristen: Ooo that sounds like some fun XT! (I love cleaning and organizing!) Sorry about the runs though  on the plumber.

Angie: :woohoo: on the run!

Martha: Yoga is definitely harder than one would think. My first thoughts "but you are just staying still" --HA. I'm rather sad because all the classes the REC offers are during [school] class times and they charge extra for workout classes. It was worth the workout class pass last semester (you can do any/all classes), but this semester it wasn't worth it so no fun classes for me :sad1:

:figment:

I got my 11 miler in yesterday. Whew I am still sore from Wednesday's horseback riding! I'm hoping this isn't true every week because that will be making for some mighty long LRs! I've decided it is getting hot enough that I need to start carrying water with me on the longer runs. We have water fountains about every 3 miles on the loops, which is fine in the winter, but once it warms up I need more.

A weird thing happened when I was running. My left arm got all tingly like it was starting to fall asleep. It started maybe half way through. I keep my arms up when I am jogging/running but put them down when I take a short walk at each mile. I probably looked ridiculous but in the last few miles I would drop my arms and shake my arms/hands to try and get it to go away (not sure that actually did any good though!). Has anyone else had this happen before? I was wearing a loose leotard, so I know it wasn't my shirt cutting off circulation. My right arm started feeling a little odd, but it was mainly my left arm. :confused3

On the good news front my boyfriend closed on the house yesterday! He bought the house that he's been renting a room in, so he's been living there for the past year. Still quite exciting though! :goodvibes

Last night we stopped by Sonic and got a banana split--that counts as healthy food right??? hehehehe I mean it has fruit and dairy (and more fruit come to think of it)! (and the most important food group--chocolate!). Yum. Then we saw 21. A good movie if anyone is looking for something to watch.

I'm off for a nice skate around the lakes! Happy training.

Hi Everyone!

Dh and got up and ran 9.2 this morning. He wanted me to keep him at a 10 minute pace but I just couldn't do it. I felt too good. We ended up with a 9:38 pace though. We both had to keep slowing each other down right up to the last mile. Dh had IT band issues at the end so I ran the last mile alone and just ran what felt good. Ah. I love it when I have one of those runs that renews my love of running.

Now I am off to the climbing walls for some rock climbing with the kids....

Cecilia

Debra Your trip sounds great--you look happy enough to even cheer up Eeyore (I favor Pooh, myself)

Jen and TXAng Cute pictures!

Angie & Cecilia Awesome long runs...I am jealous.

So I'm in "Day 2" of my week off from running. Thanks to all for the good wishes (10 out of 10 WISHers said rest!) I know it's the right thing to do. Off to the gym for me in a while to do something cardio--bike, probably. First though---cup of tea & a Ghiradelli brownie (darn that Costco!)

Maura

Firedancer: I'll be at the Cleveland race (doing the 1/2) with my DH, DOO (who's doing the full) in May. Will you be there since you're so close?

Actually I won't be doing it this year but I have done it in the past. I am going to Italy in May and will be there the weekend of the marathon biking Tuscany.

I will tell you though that the course is very fast. Many years it actually has the highest average finishing time out of all the Boston qualifiers. I did the half in 2006 and the weather was cool but perfect for a half or full marathon.

Tracy: I love that you run on a mountain of garbage. I started running when I lived in Clearwater and after moving back to Ohio I found the hills brutal because I wasn't used to running anything less then flat. Glad you found a way to do hill work.
