Wk of Apr 8--WISH Walking/Running Club

Jackie, Zoe, our JRT is cuddly. Is Mystic a JRT? Ours is a girl that has been fixed. She really LOVES:love: me b/c I take her running so she is most cuddly with me. The princess: princess: , not so much. She puts up with them, but that is it...I let her sleep in the bed with me and she sleeps right up on me.

AHHHH! It is thundering so I gotta get off.....JRT is going crazy!:scared:

Mystic is a lab/chow with a little shepherd and husky thrown in. She's smart, but has a lot of issues - won't cuddle, terrified of storms, terrified of men, hides when people come in the house (great watchdog, huh?). She'll sleep on the end of the bed, but if you try to get next to her she jumps down. She's a rescue, so we assume she had a rough start in the 4 months before we adopted her. DH wants a smaller dog for our next one (or second one if we get that brave), and he loves the idea of a JRT. I told him I "knew" someone who had one so I'd check it out! I do keep reminding him that they have a lot of energy and require a lot of exercise - like running.

OMG! I have totally surprised myself today.

I wanted to do a power mile, just go as hard as I can to see how quick I could do it. I was hoping to be somewhere around the 16 min/mile I'm aiming for for my 5K in June.

I went 13:40!!!! I did throw in a little jogging in 3 different short segments (like 50 yds or less). I can't believe I did it that quickly. Of course, I was having trouble breathing, and it took another 1/2 mile of walking before I was really cooled down (my walk back took 19 minutes), but still, I'm super impressed w/myself LOL!

I totally understand that one mile is not even close to the 1/2 marathon, but at least it's a start :)

Martha - I'm teh lobsided one ;) (Scott started calling me stumpy within minutes of hearing teh news. ) Someone else was confused. I'm just taking it as a compliment, though. :teeth: So, your track advice to me was good.

Kristin - So sorry you've been sick adn you're grounded to the treadmill. :( Yuck! Hope things get better soon!!!!

Hi WISH Team! I am going to read some and look forward to learning how everyone is doing.

PD to those that might need it. I'm thinking of all WISH Team members often. Great to see that there are plenty keeping things moving along here.

I've managed to string together a couple of great w/o days and am thoroughly enjoying that it seems the IT band thing is in the back seat. I would like to say gone, but I am not certain of all things yet. I think I am reaching the end of the epidural (miracle) time and I'm still feeling pretty decent these days. Minnie will be here before I know it!

:thumbsup2 Jackie

If the PF gets worse, and you get an x-ray on the spot you'll see the tendon begins to calcify at the connection to the bone in the heel or ball. I do remember the x-ray of my right heel looking like I had a little tongue sticking out from the bone. The cortisone shot in the spot will reduce the inflammation and break up the bone spur, but thankfully I never had that done.

In my case it was the supportive orthotics more than anything which helped me. I have really high arches and a rigid foot, so when I strike the bottom of the foot flexes with the plantar tendon stretching away from its connection points at the ball and heel. I was running heavy miles then and it got inflammed, sore, then a bit of bone spur. The orthotics allowed me to keep running long and hard, but that was 20 years ago.

Now I run only 2 or 3 times a week, bike 2, and lift 2. Mostly I follow this schedule because my body will break down with more running sessions. This schedule is not sufficiently rigorous to allow me to run the paces I'm capable of, but it is enough to allow me to run "nice" times and be pleased with what I've done. I would encourage you to also do non-impact exercises which really work your legs and cardio system, as that will build endurance and strength without pounding your body.

I must admit, this has taken me many years to accept. I still yearn for the times I was running 20 years ago, but my body won't take the stress. My true love is soccer, but I reached a point when I got injured during matches because I wasn't training hard enough. The solution was to train harder, but unfortunately I got hurt in training. I had to walk away from my favorite sport on earth because my body wouldn't take it. This applies to my running as well. I would like to be fitter and faster, but my body won't hold together if I train for that. I am doing what I'm capable of, which sometimes discourages me, but in saner moments I realize how wonderful it is to be still out there on the course. Someday I hope to be completely comfortable with this reality, perhaps by my 80th birthday!

Remember, Vic and I are the same age. He's the Fabio of the group, I'm just trying to keep up with his example:thumbsup2 .

Take care

Craig

Good news for Kaley...her cyst is stable so annual followup now with ultrasound instead of CT

I did 41 min on the TM tonight at a 12:46 pace.

Fun with Fasciitis
Three things...ice, stretching and orthotics. I spent 9 months trying conservative treatments before using my Xmas bonus to have the custom orthotics made. I did cortisone, tape, OTC orthotics, lots and lots of Advil (vitamin I in my house ;) )...I would improve, but never completely heal. Since the orthotics, it's improved dramatically, but still not quite gone. Seems I aggravate it every so often...last time was kayaking.
Christa's right...classic PF is most painful first step in the morning, then improves. I have never had that symptom. I can't walk barefoot anymore because of the heel pain, but I also had hip pain that the pod says was me trying to compensate for the heel. It rarely hurts when I run. I've spent most of the last year in tennis shoes because almost all of my regular, cute shoes don't have enough support and hurt after awhile. I can't run on the TM with an incline because it puts pressure on the heel (though that part's getting better).
I ice and stretch every day, whether I run or not. I really need to take some time off from running to let it heal, but have only managed to do that for about two weeks last June :rolleyes1 . Calf stretches are very, very important (I also have the short Stick to help keep the calves loose). I stretch before every run, before I get in the shower, trace the alphabet with my foot (thanks, Lily!) at work, etc.
For me, orthotics were a necessity because of my foot design. I had heel spurs in both feet before I ever started running. Orthotics should NOT rub or cause blisters...if they do, take 'em back to the pod for rework. Mine made them in his office so they could also adjust as needed. I do think my orthotics push my foot forward so I'm going to have to get a 1/2 size larger shoe to compensate.
That's my saga with PF. This is partly why I've tried so many different shoes...kept hoping I'd find the magic pair that would work. I'm cautiously optimistic that it will heal before I train for the full, but I am planning to take time off afterward either way (I'm not likely to do the Sarasota half next year).

Anyone left reading...I was very impressed with the POP food court last year. They weren't expecting us but were very accomodating when they found out we had a large group. POP has a lot of different menu choices at decent prices and plenty of space. Breakfast has been at Boardwalk Bakery, but I think Carrie suggested Beaches N Cream instead for next year. There are certainly other places like Chef Mickey's or Ohana's that could be cool for breakfast. What sounds good to everyone?

MouseDogMom - Having a rescue dog does present certain quirks of behavior, but is well worth the reward. My Golden (see below) loves water to bathe, lay, roll and swim in. However, she is afraid of rain and yard sprinklers, we think she was a stray who was trapped outside in some storms. Our second (DWs dog) is a Jack Russell, definitely a bundle of energy. In mornings, I have just enough time to turn off my alarm before he jumps on me and starts licking my face...he has definitely put a crimp in my ability to use the snooze alarm.

bekkiz - good work on the mile; like me I am sure you will be surprised at your first 5K rate--my first was close to 90 seconds per minute faster than I expected.

I thought the POP food court was an excellent place for the Friday night meet. I vote we stay there. I didn't make the other meets, so I can't comment on them.

Kona Cafe would also be good for breakfast. Tonga toast! Mmmmmmm. :thumbsup2

Craig - Thanks for all the additional info. It's so hard to accept that the body isn't young anymore. I have the complication of never having been athletic when I was younger, so as an "adult-onset-athlete," all these pains and issues are even harder to handle. Add to that a spouse who was an athlete, and is still able to play (mostly) without injury. (He has suffered his share of soccer injuries and had to miss more games than he'd like to admit - age does catch up.) When I started running last year it was the first time I'd ever set a long-term goal (the Minnie 5K) and kept at it, and I was so proud when I finished. Now I want to do it again with the Donald, and I HATE the idea of injuries sidelining me. Thankfully I have lots of WISH buddies to keep me going; if I were doing this alone I would have given up long ago - certainly at the first sign of pain.

I'm hoping that the doc tomorrow (who we've seen before for ingrown toenails and absolutely LOVE) will be able to look at my feet and at least tell me where the problem started. I was beginning to feel just a little pain before I bought new shoes, but it certainly got worse with the new shoes. I told my co-workers if I don't come back after the appt to assume that he told me I couldn't run and I've gone home to mourn, but I certainly hope that's not the outcome!

Anyway, I appreciate all your advice and encouragement. Vic may be Fabio, but you can be our Jack Sparrow!

Jackie

XT today in the form of building a bookcase, then on top of it, the recumbent bike DW ordered came and got that assembled too. Back is sore and I am tired.
Happy Training!

And Mel, your post arrived while I was composing the one to Craig... your saga scares the ---- out of me! But it's encouraging to know that this many WISHers are dealing with this and still out there running!

Great news about Kaley!

Jackie

tiberius Thank you for the encouragement. I'm wondering if I should set my goal even faster--like 15:30..we'll see as the training goes on. All I know is my legs are sore :)

Dogs certainly add some interesting aspects to running/walking. Indy (my pup) gets so distracted when we go for our morning walks, I try to concentrate on my posture and stride, b/c he's too busy to allow me to move quick!

Pretty good day yesterday with a 30 min tethered swim (guessing 1000 yds ish) then a 60 min bike (bout 16 miles in the totally pouring rain). Wasn't really planning on biking in the rain, there were only a few drops but had already committed to the brick (multisport) workout. Then the skies opened up and it gave me some good practice with terrible (rain and howling wind) conditions. Today was a total stonker 4 mile run, had to insert in some walking intervals, it was HUMID beyond belief, was totally soaked through my shirt after just the 40 min.

We are now officially registered for both the 5k and 15k for the Minnie! :woohoo: Looks like I'll likely be deploying at the end of that month though. Would still let me do the Half Ironman on May 20th, although I'm holding off on ponying up for that one for a little while longer hoping it doesn't sell out. Tomorrow I'm going to hit the pool and try to swim the 2112 yards that make up the first leg of it, and if I do that successfully and don't feel completely thrashed, I'll probably give the Half a go. The pool on base is a 25 yarder though, so that's 84 one way laps. :scared1:

Hey Vic - You better watch out with all this Fabio talk. The last time I saw Fabio (other than him mumbling "I can't believe it's not butter") he got pelted in the puss by a pigeon while riding a roller coaster!

I'd hate to hear about you taking one in the schnozz on Big Thunder Mountain!!

Good Morning TEAM: :surfweb:

I'm up early to try to get some work done. I'm keeping up with my training, and my booty's feeling better. A little sore and stiff at times, but nothing too major.

Tuesday I SWOGged for 30 min and stretched afterwards.

Yesterday I went down to the gym to use the TM in the gym at the end of the dat and realized I signed up for the wrong day. I almost threw in the towel, but decided to go home and run. I got home, put on my tights and headed out the door. I had a good run - 4.48 miles in 40:37 min/9:03 mpm. I felt really strong on the run, and my splits were really close in time. It was great to get outside, get some fresh air and clear my head.

My princesses, DD6 princess: and DD9 princess:, have been falling off a little on their 5K training. We haven't run this week yet. However, they have this week off of school, and our spending the week at Tae Kwon Do camp. They love it, and are getting lots of exercise at the camp. I'm counting that as x-training. I'm really letting them call whether to run or not. I don't want to push them, and have them end up not liking it.

Drive by post todyy. The kids at the track killed the old man last night. We did 400 meter pick-ups with 400 meter cool down between each total of 7 laps with each group X 3 groups. I always run the first hard lap with the front kids (pick-up at between 6 min mile and 6:40 mile pace, depending on the age grouop) then back off to the next group (pick-up at 6:30 to 7:00 pace and then for the last fast lap drop back again (pick-up at 6:30 to 7:15). Covered a total of 8 miles with warm up and cool down in a total of 1:03:35 and got in 9 speed laps.

Good training all,

Mike "GG" B

Back to the dog topic....JRTs are a funny breed. Every time I take her to the vet for her yearly checkup they comment on how active a JRT is....I have to admit, mine isn't really that hyper. I tell them that a JRT who is run around 30 miles a week is not all that hyper at home.:rotfl: They just look at me like I am crazy!:confused3

Dave - That is how I feel with my princess: princess: . I don't want to push them into running and they end up hating it. Our 5k training has not gone great for about a month due to princess: 9's allergies. We are trying different meds and she is better, but just walking outside sends her into the sneezing, nose bleeding, eyes watering fit.:sad1: She really is wanting to run the 5k though.
WTG on the run!

Matt - WOW! You are the WO man!

Good news for Kaley...her cyst is stable so annual followup now with ultrasound instead of CT
 :cool1:  :cool1:  :cool1:  That is GREAT NEWS!

A mile is 1/13th of a half marathon! So it is totallly cool! WTG on that smoke'n fast wog!  Never belittle your accomplishments! You are really on track (no pun:rotfl: )

Jackie - I am sending you lots of :grouphug: and :wizard: because I know this is hard for you. But FYI, I also only run around 3x a week then bike and swim and dance the rest of the time. I used to only run and my times would not move, but when I started xtraining, I got faster....alot faster. Like from a 5 hour marathon to my WDW 07 4:12 PR.:yay: That may not be the fastest time in the world, but taking almost an hour (and remember how HOT it was this year as compared to last year) off a marathon time is OUT OF CONTROL! I hope this helps you feel better.

OOOOO! I forgot to tell you guys but I did get my WDW certificate in the mail! I was so excited to see my placing....
Age Division Place: 83 out of 858
Overall Place: 1730 of 10940

I tell my WISH buddies, b/c no one here (who doesn't run) really cares or understands.

Age Division Place: 83 out of 858
Overall Place: 1730 of 10940[/B]
:woohoo: WOO HOO!!!:woohoo:
Thanks for stressing the need for xt, Christa.
That is something I tend to skip when LTO - and I know I need to get in alot more xt to improve.

:yay: And what great news about Kaley! :yay:

Mel- So happy to hear about your daughter!

Christa- Wow! I'd frame that certificate w/ those placement numbers! Which form of XT do you think has been the most beneficial?

bekkiz- :thumbsup2

I'm going to be doing 4 miles on the TM and some upper body and core strength training at the Y this afternoon whilst DD does her Girls on the Run. She is really loving the program.

Have a great day!

Christa- Wow! I'd frame that certificate w/ those placement numbers! Which form of XT do you think has been the most beneficial?

I am not really sure....I have biked more than swim. I do think the biking has made me a better runner. Swimming does too, but have not been swimming in about a month. I think it helps to do anything to build endurence. Xtraining can do this w/o the impact that running has on the body.

This is OFF TOPIC! But, I was thinking the other day when someone asked me how I had the energy to train/work/dance/momy/ect......I thought to myself isnt it funny how time and age changes things. When I was a child I was thought of as hyperactive, but now all that energy, serves me well and I am thought of as energetic.:rotfl: I guess that is why I like being a children's therapist.;) I relate. I still cannot spell though...:confused3
