Wk of Apr 2--2007 WISH Walking/Running Club

Forgot to say,

I tried contacting the runtoremember about the chip they say I didn't return and my emails keep bouncing back! I better not get stuck with a bill. This is a first for me.

Judy and Mel - Have fun on your trips

Mel - I'd love to do the Minnie. But it's the same weekend as the Blue Cross Broad Street Run here in Philly. I work the event from Thurs. morning until Sunday afternoon. But I told the race director that one of these years I won't be working cause I need my Minnie Medal (boy did I get a major eye roll for that  ).

Goofyguy
- C'mon - ya gotta have faith. The Birds never look like they're gonna be terrific, but they just win (well except for last year  ).

I think I have to find a good airfare and book my ticket - then there won't be any wavering on my part. I can always watch the game at ESPN Zone.

Terri

Terri-DL DL DL DL DL DL!!!!!! Of course this is coming from a non football fan but this is an inaugural event!!! Just think about wearing that cool castle medal on the plane ride home :cloud9: And all the fun at Candy Cane we'll be having.......

Sunny-great job on your run. When is the tri you are doing? How far are the distances?

Lynne-love the quote!!!

Cam-its so good to see you back here. Good luck to DS this weekend. I know you are bursting at the seams with pride :goodvibes But dont forget about training~4 weeks to go :cool1:

Judy-have a blast on your cruise! We'll miss you while you're gone.

Scott-Congrats for signing up for the 5k. And for going to WDW with free dining. I so wish we could go but DS's fall break doesnt start until a week after the offer ends. That's cool you live in Kennasaw, I'm from Marrietta.

Mel-I'm so jealous of how often you get to go to WDW & how close you live :lmao: (that's me "green" with envy) Have a great weekend!!!

Well today is DS8 first tri! He is so excited. I hope he got enough sleep last night. We had a really bad weather night & spent alot of the evening in the hall. The boys were freaked out/terrified. There were a lot of wall clouds & tornados in our area. We were lucky, unfortunately TN wasnt so lucky (we are about 10 min from the TN state line) DH woke us up at one point to put us back in our "fort" in the hall. DS's were asleep thru most of that one even when we put their bike helmets on them.

Everyone have a great weekend!!!!

Morning everyone! :yay:

Can you believe that I just sat here and read every single post from last week's thread and this one?!?! It took me 1hr and 40min. I guess we can just chalk that up as another one of my running related time scores. :rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2:

Hit me if I ever think of drinking anything with caffeine in it with dinner again. :badpc: Especially 2 HUGE glasses of tea from Sonny's BBQ! :drinking1 I've been up all freaking night long. But sweet BBQ ribs & tea...Yum! Might have been worth it, especially since I got to catch up with everyone on here. I just haven't had the time to keep up with this flying thread lately. But I do love you all and I'm sooo proud of your accomplishments! :cheer2:

Dave- I love the socks! I just had to say that since I think I just read it 8 million times from everyone. But really they're great!

Good luck and pixiedust: to all those running races today and to everyone attempting a long run. I was supposed to do my first 4.5m lr last night, but I just had a weird bad feeling. Kinda like that mommy's intuition thing so we stayed home. I did not want to risk our safety or a possible injury. Anyone run with pepper spray? DH thinks I'm completely wacky for wanting some...

Thanks to whoever (forgive me for not remembering who) suggested that it was IMPORTANT for beginners to do slow fun runs in the middle of training. That is exactly what I needed last week. I had gotten so frustrated by always number crunching while running that I lost the JOY of it. I am trying to remain focused only on completing individual intervals and not always trying to beat my time.

I LOVED  LOVED  LOVED the DFL>DNF>>DNS thing! I want it on a t-shirt so bad. Maybe I'll put it on the back of my WISH shirt for the 1/2. It makes me sad that I just chickened out of my 10k on 04/22 for fear of being DFL. I did switch it to a 5k instead of canceling it all together so I'm trying to count that as a positive. ::yes::

Did I mention that I hit my 50lb weightloss mini-goal since the last time I posted on the training thread? I made it to a size 16! :teeth: :teeth: :teeth:

I do have a question before I try to "go to bed." I'm in the whole training-to-train part of this and my main goal now is losing weight. Would you experienced know-it-alls (j/k :lmao: ) suggest that I break my runs into 2 sessions per day in order to make them a little longer? Or is it better to build my endurance? My current schedule is:

M R3/W2 for 3 miles
T walk 60mins
W R3/W2 for 2 miles
R walk 45 mins
F R3/W2 4.5 miles
S rest
S rest

TIA!

Hi Everyone,

Well I'm back feeling like 100% again :thumbsup2 I've been reading our thread but really didn't have a lot of time to post (sorry).

Teri - I agree with everyone else.....Run DL :teeth:

Dave - Congratulations on the Garmin :woohoo: and thank you again for organizing the WISH socks

Krista It looks like I will have to read Marathoning for Mortals again.....and look at the plans - that sounds a little bit easier to follow or maybe I will just wing it, don't know yet! but you said it helped you with the half? Thank you again for the advice :thumbsup2 I love this group :grouphug:

JODI: can you run in the AM to get those 5 mile in? Soon it will be light enough to go at 7PM if you don't mind going late. Or maybe on your lunch? Sometime I run at work instead of waiting til I get home, it seems to make the transition to running faster. If I go home first I tend to dilly dally!
Kim You are so right - that's me exactly I dilly dally also if I go home first.....I don't function well in the a.m. so it will have to be after work :teeth:

Cam Glad to see that you're back! Congratulations to you DD for getting into Univ. of Delaware....Glad you enjoyed your trip - Good job on keeping up with training while at Disney.

TnTsParty Good luck on your 5k today!

Dena Congratulations on the weight loss - that is great :cheer2:

Well, I'm going to take off for now - I will be running again tomorrow.....I plan on doing some Pilates or BOSU today.

BTW -Sorry if I had forgotten anyone in my post, I was trying to get everyone but I know I missed quite a bit!

Jodi

Morning everyone, I have been a slacker for three days now d/t sinus infection my DS was kind enough to share with me - he has sinus infection, bi-lateral ear infections and tonsillitis (can't share that because mine are long gone) - and I have just not felt well enough to run. I did buy myself a Garmin 201 on Thursday and can't wait to try it out tomorrow though.

xterratri, the DFL>DNF>>DNS is something I lived when I first started training in 1989. I was told by my doctor after a physical that I would - not that I might - have a heart attack by the time I was 35 (was 29 at the time) if I didn't change my ways. Six weeks later I entered a short-course tri and came in 165th out of 167 finishers - 80 some starters did not finish. I was 50 pounds over my current weight but hey I beat a 69-year-old and a 74-year-old and finished and haven't stopped since.

Terri, the Joe Bs. and Jeffery Ls are testing my faith with their condesending ways, but I will continue to root on all of our poor loser teams here in Philly. It's just heart breaking to get too excited about any of the 4 - see the injury riddled Flyers, the dreadful and I quit 76ers, the hey-just-win-one-please Phillies, and the ever tight fisted E-A-G-L-E-S. Good choice on doing the DL half, that is something you can always look back on and state with pride that you ran the very first one.

Hey RunningLilo, one of those experienced know-it-alls here and I would offer this piece of advise on your training; instead of doing two-a-day workouts why don't you trto increase the length of the running portion of each run by a little bit. Here is what I would suggest: change over the 3/2 ratio to a 3:30/1:30 on each run for two weeks and drop an additional 10 seconds each week until you are up to a 4/1 ratio. Once you get to the 4/1 ratio increase the milage by no more than 10% total every other week - the first week increase from 9.5 to 10 to ease into things and then every other week add on by the 10% rule. Another suggestion would be to break the week up a little bit by having your rest days at seperate times. For example, instead of consecutive days make the rest days on say Tuesday and Saturday. Hope that helps and great job with all of your training.

Hi TEAM,

I just need to check in so that I don't give up.

Since my first 5k 3/19, I have been having heel pain as well as some sciatic nerve pain in my butt. So, I cut back on running, did some walking and started rowing. I also found that it helped my heel not to go bare foot at home.

Anyway, pain in the heel improves when I rest completely. The rowing aggrivated the sciatic nerve even more. So, after some research, I realized I need to stick to biking and swimming or water running.

I am kind of bummed. Training for the Chicago half begins in May, and I don't want to miss any of that training. So, I will find an orthopod to dx my troubles. Since at this point, I am self dx. I will stick to water running and biking until may. Maybe I will even try to swim a few laps.

Especially bummed, because my Garmin just arrived this week.

Okay enough of the pity party! I will hit the pool today and keep reading these boards.

Have a great weekend!
Maggie

Oh, I forgot to ask:

For those of you who walk with no running - do you wear running or walking shoes?

Currently I am wearing new balance running shoes. I just changed the number to a higher one, that has more stability for my major overpronating. Does anyone else wear new balance? Have you been happy. I know this is individual, but sometimes it helps to hear other experiences.

Maggie :sunny:

Hi WISH Team!
Well I just thought I would share my news here. I am taking advantage of the "down time" from any exercising this week and have completed a task that I've wanted to do for a year. I've made myself a photo book on Imagestation from my first ever Half marathon--the WDW 2005. I've just finished the report I will insert in the book and will place my order this weekend. Whew! Nothing like taking forever to get to things.

Now off I go to compile something from this year's Goofy experience...

Happy training everyone. I've been reading here too.

btw--Lynne I LOVE the quote.

Maggie- I have just started adding some running, but even when I was only walking I wore running shoes. From the research I did that seemed to be what I should use, even though I was walking, it was very fast paced & alot of distance. Walking shoes arent made for marathoning at any speed. :wizard: for the sciatica. I used to have that & I know how painful it can be. The only thing that helped me was my beloved chiropractor. I am wearing Asics Kayanos right now. This is what Fleet Feet recommended for me & they have been working well. NB work great for some & not so great for others. Good luck, a good shoe makes all the difference.

Dena-congrats on the weight loss! that is awesome :cheer2:

DS did his first tri today & did awesome! I was so proud of him it took all I could do not to cry when he finished. He was in the middle of the pack and for the little training he did & the heavy weight of his bike it was a great finish. Very laid back atmosphere, they didnt even have a time clock. Great atmosphere for his first one. No fair he got to do one before me (they did have an adult tri before his, but I wasnt ready for it)

I bet we can find t shirts with that quote from Lynne. That is very cool. (although I would have to explain to everyone what it means. No racers or triathletes in my life except for you guys)

Just wanted to report in on my results from my very first 5k. I was nervous and thought I was doing worse than I really ended up doing. My official time was 31:30 with 10:10 as my mile splits. I came in 4th in my age group (there were only 5 in my age group but I was SOOOO excited that I got 4th - I hugged my DH) Thankfully he woke up early with me and went with me (I left it up to him if he felt like going or not and he told me "yeah someone had to cheer you on") he was at the finish line which was very close to the start line. He said he was cheering on everyone as they came in and he was there cheering for me as I crossed the line. There was a real strong wind on the last half of the race so I about died but I just kept thinking about DFL>DNF>>DNS and I kept saying to myself at least I am not DFL - LOL.

Tiff - congrats to your DS on his Tri. Sorry about the sciatica - my BIL and my Grandmother have a problem with that and it sounds like its painful.

If it helps--due to the distances involved for half and full marathon training--if that is what you are pursuing...our coaches as well as the running store recommended to use an actual running shoe.

I wear the saucony hurricane so cannot comment on NB--but since you do have feet issues....I think the running shoe would provide better support in general. I have been using mine for walking (though I am a runner)--and my feet appreciate it. :)

Oh--and just checked my e-mail. DL Inaugural half marathon is officially closed to registration. Charity teams still may have spaces.

Congrats on your 5k times. That was sailing!

Running shoes for me no matter what. The reason I think is that the heel is lifted a bit more than the walking and I need that for the Achilles tendonitis issues. I also always walk in the house with molded flip flops that give me aome sort of arch support to help relieve the stress in my feet.

BETH - I need to take a new picture of her. The only one I have is from a couple of years ago when she was getting to go to "grandma's" while her parents went to Disney. She has her own Princess (kids) bag. I have a digital but indoor pics of her aren't always the best, they turn out too dark. She's a Cardigan (with a tail), mostly black with white socks and a bit of white on the nose/face. I didn't think before I left today or I would have gotten a picture of her with HER running buddies (my race partner's dogs) but I will next time and share it :) I think they are great little dogs. Just the right size for me and playful.

LYNNDA = thanks for the "great job" the other day :)

DAVE & Goofyguy = Congrats on your new Garmins!!!! Goodness, I think I'm going to be the only one here without one soon LMBO Guess I might be sweet talking hubby ;)

KRISTA = LOL about Hines sleeping the evening/night away. The 2nd best part of taking Phoebe, I get to sleep the night thru after she's done 3 mile with us. Although she doesn't have Hine's pace LOL

KIM = Ouch on the achillies but WOW on you doing the Boston!!!! Way kewl!!! :) I hope everything goes well for you and you have an amazing time and an excellent pace :)

DANA = Hope everything goes smoothly for the babies surgery and recovery is fast :) Wooohooo on cutting back on the packs :)

TERRI = I agree with everyone else... There will only be 1 Inaugral Half Marathon at Disneyland. Come join us. It's going to be a party :-D

TNTSPARTY = WOOOOHOOOOO and CONGRATS on your 1st 5K!!! Amazing time! Great job!

Well I've been in hiding since Wednesday. Wednesday I report our 3 mile walk with the dog. Thursday was suppose to be 6 miles with my race partner but she had a horrible headache and sore throat so we skipped. Friday I managed to drag my tush on the ellip. machine and did 58 minutes, I got bored and my heel was bothering me so I only did the 58 :) Today I had a dentist appt so I was rewarded with a short easy day which was we dragged our DHs and dogs along for a 3 miler and let me tell you I don't want to know the pace for today LMBO I never knew one could make 3 miles last that long but the dogs had a really good time and got a lot of sniffs in and even my pooch who stays on the path decided to attempt to jump into a mini lake created over the last couple of months. We were quite a sight today, the other times we've taken the dogs have been much more orderly, today was pure chaos. We started with I think every human wrapped in a dog leash at the same time. I don't think there was one of us not in that mess but thankfully since DH had the leash for our dog I was able to untangle myself quickly from the mess. I about feel on path laughing. What a day. So I guess all things considered I won't worry about today's pace ;) Tomorrow we are planning on 8 miles, walking and hoping that we'll feel energized to run parts of it back :)

I know I missed people, sorry about that! I really need to read daily and not hide when I feel so bad about not training on a day. :rolleyes1

Happy training!!!!

Minnie - whine all you want to!

Lynne - I LOVE that quote!
"DFL>DNF>>DNS
Translation: dead friggin last beats out did not finish and they both greatly trump did not start. The attitude is that just getting out there and doing your best is some much more than so many other people do."

Dena - Congrats on that awesome weight loss! I have been hovering at about 10 lbs. to my WW goal since last summer. That's why I finally got off my butt and am training to do the Minnie 15k. Just now, the pounds are starting to come off again. I only have about 7 more to WW goal - I am down almost 30 at this point.

Magslite - pixiedust: for your heel & sciatic pain! I had sciatic pain when I was pregnant and it is very painful.

TiffJ - Congrats on your DS' tri! :cheer2:

TnTsParty - Congratulations on your 5k!

Well, today was my first ever 6 miler. I did my 'mostly walk fast & run some' thing and finished in 1:24. I forget the splits - still not too sure of all the inner workings on DH's Garmin. I was very happy I kept it under 1:30 (15min/mile requirement for the Minnie) since my longest walk/run before this was 4 miles. My biggest fear is being swept. I really don't care about time, I just want to finish and get that Minnie medal.

I also found out why I was having such a hard time with my hands swelling! It was only about 41 degrees when I went out this morning, so I wore Chad's Nike running gloves. I also kept my hands up near my heart. Turns out, they swelled before since they were cold! When I did my 3 miler earlier this week, I kept my hands up, but did not have gloves. That time, my hands were not only swollen really bad, but frozen when I finished. Today, I doubled that mileage, kept the hands up, but added gloves. BINGO! Just some minor swelling that was nothing compared to before. Darn Raynauds Syndrome!

I am seeing how this can be addicting. I mean, after the Minnie, what reason do I have to keep exercising? Knowing the couch potato I am, I will need to sign up for something else, or I will slowly stop exercising altogether.

I am starting to feel really left out about the DL Half. I am going, to watch Chad run it. I didn't sign up since I wasn't sure how I would do with training - I wanted to at least get the Minnie under my belt before spending more $ on another race. And, to be totally honest - we are still on the fence about trying to have another baby. My thinking also was 'knowing my luck, I'd get preggo by then, not be able to race, and lose that registration $.' Oh well - I'll crown myself the official DIS WISH race photographer in CA! I have excellent experience from chasing Chad around, taking pics during the race the past 5 years at WDW. I will start planning my attack.

I am off to sit on the couch and watch something on TiVo. My legs are swelling up (they have done this since 8th grade whenever I exercise alot or stand in place, my kness seem to trap the fluid in the lower leg) - need to prop them up to get the fluid back down. Oh, and eat a big bowl of popcorn!

Cam - Yea to Jenn for getting into UD. And don't feel bad about not training. Do the mom thing - your kids will be grown before you know it. When the play is over, run!

Amy pixiedust: for your kids!

Minnie - Whining allowed. Sorry your trip was cancelled. :sad1:

Dena - Congrats on your 50lb mini-goal!

Maggie - I wear only New Balance. And the guys at the New Balance store told me to wear running shoes for walking long before I ever started running. I just bought 857s last weekend.

TiffJ - Congrats to DS on completing his tri!

TnTsParty - Great job on your 5K!

We've decided that my calf pain is actually tendinitis. I've given it a week off, with one night on the bike to keep from feeling like a couch potato. I think I'm going to try a short 1-mile run/walk tomorrow just to see how it feels and then stretch really well. I can't stand that it's 28 days till the Minnie and I'm doing nothing.

I spent the weekend planning the remainder of the Minnie weekend. DD is taking a friend who finally gave us the "yes" answer, so I was able to make dining plans, etc. Obsessive planning mode in progress - non-Disney folks should stay clear!

Jackie

Just wanted to check in on everyone, and say Hi!! Also wanted to update everyone on how I am doing.

CRAPPY!!! I feel like such a whiny baby, but I am so sick of being SICK!! This morning DH and I both ended up going to Solantic. For anyone who doesn't know what that is, it's like an ER when you aren't actually sick enough to go to the ER. Well, we both have bronchitis, but luckily after chest xrays they ruled out pneumonia. I have an antibiotic I have to take twice a day, and inhaler I have to use 4 times a day, and a cough medicine with codeine to help me sleep at night. Problem is..... I can't take any other medication within 3 hours of taking my antibiotic, or within 2 hours of taking my codeine laced cough medicine. So I took my antibiotic at 8, and immediately started running a fever of 101.5 and I can't take any tylenol for the fever unless I am gonna sit up until 1am. Guess what?! The codeine will make me forget about the fever!! :rotfl: However, the dr. said we should be feeling better by Monday and if we aren't to call her and she'll get us some more medicine. So hopefully I will be feeling better next week and be able to start training again. That's my hope anyway!! :thumbsup2

Dena - Congrats on the 50lbs... that is amazing!!

Diana - Don't worry about it... I don't have a Garmin either... I am hoping for my birthday that everyone gets me a Gift Certificate to our local running store. Maybe then I can get some new shoes and maybe a Garmin too if I am lucky!!

Ok, well it is now 10:30pm so I am gonna go get a shower and get ready for bed!!

Take Care,
Dana

Hey everyone! Wow - I have 4 pages to catch up on!!! Here's my update... Thursday was a good swim lesson. My coach decided I needed to do more speed drills (this was the second day in a row) so I was pretty wiped out - no run Thursday night. Friday became a rest day - I needed it mentally and physically. This morning I ran 7 miles. Tonight I biked 6 miles/ran 1 mile. (I think I made up for my DOR...) ;)

DH and I got to the running store today and both got new shoes - Yea!!! He actually switched over to Saucony - ever since they put out a new model of his other shoe, he's had problems. We'll see how these do. My Brooks are in a new model, too, but they assured me it was just a color change - no messing with perfection!

Kristi - We can cheer everyone at DL on together! DH is running the half. DS will be 3 when we go, and we certainly can't afford to take a babysitter! :rotfl: So - our compromise was me doing the Minnie, DH is doing DL, and I will do the DL 5K. Do you want to do the 5K with me? :thumbsup2

Diane - LOL at walking with the dogs!!! I used to try to run with DS in the stroller and our golden on the leash... notice I USED to!!! :rotfl2:

TNTs Party - CONGRATS ON YOUR FIRST 5K!!!! That is a great time!!!!! :woohoo:

Tiff - YEA for DS's tri!!!! I know I will be crying when my DS crosses his first finish line!!! ;) And I'm so glad you all are safe after those terrible storms!

Lily - Great job on the photo book! You are still ahead of me - I haven't started DS's baby book from 2003!

Maggie - Sorry to hear about your pain! I hope you are able to get to the doctor soon!

goofyguy - I hope you and DS are better soon!!! Congrats on the Garmin!!!

Jodi - So glad you are feeling good!!! :wizard: for a great run tomorrow! Let us know how it goes!

Dena - Congrats on the weight loss!!! You are doing awesome!!! I like the idea of putting that saying on the back of a shirt - I may need to do that for Minnie! ;)

Sunny - Great job on your run today!!! Also, glad you get to do the race before your trip!!!

Maherae - How neat that your niece and nephew are in Spectromagic that night!!! We are also trying to figure out how to get to EoS - hope to see you there! :teeth:

Minnie - So sorry you won't get to go to flower/garden! Feel free to whine anytime!

Lynne - Love that saying! You are definitely my tri-hero - I am constantly amazed by your training!!! Just curious - how long you've been doing tris?

Amy - Good luck to your kids on the performances!!! I did Music Man when I was in HS - good memories! And great job on getting your run in!!!

Judy - We miss you!!! Hope you are having a wonderful trip!!!

Scott - Congrats on signing up for your first 5K - You will be great! That's really sweet that you are doing a father/daughter trip! There are plenty of great places to run, and don't forget how much walking you will do with just the parks!

Mel - Hope you are enjoying WDW right now!

Cam - I hope Andy's play is going well! :goodvibes Don't worry about the training right now - we can help give you a kick in the right direction after his play is over - just enjoy these moments! ;)

Carrie - :wizard: for everything at work - hope it calms down soon!!! 10:30 miles are pretty great in my book (I'm guessing you did 4 miles in 40 minutes last year ;) ) I know I'm way slower than last year, but that is due to my extra weight... I know DH is slower since training for the marathon - all the endurance work instead of the speed work. Just a thought...

Terri - DISNEYLAND!!!!! Book your flight asap - you'll never get this chance again. :goodvibes Of course, this is coming from one who has never been to DL and is counting down the minutes until we go... :lmao:

okay, I know I didn't get to everyone, but I'm so sleepy I'm forgetting what I just read... I hope this post made sense... :rotfl2:

Night all! Happy training tomorrow!!!

--Lynnda

PS - I just had to edit because it said I used too many smilies - so consider yourself smilied-at. :lmao:

Jackie - I hope your run/walk goes well tomorrow!!! Please let us know how you feel! Tendonitis can be very difficult to deal with - it sounds like you are listening to your body, though. :goodvibes

Dana - I'm so sorry you both are still dealing with this. I'm so glad it isn't pneumonia, but I'm sure it has to be so frustrating for you. Lots of :grouphug: and :wizard: - please keep us updated!

And because I couldn't share smilies in the last post...

:cool1:  :cheer2: :thumbsup2 :teeth: :Pinkbounc :woohoo: :yay: :bounce: :hyper: pixiedust: :rockband: party: :jumping1: :rainbow: :jumping3: :dumbo:

Boy, when it rains, it pours (literally and figuratively).

It rained here most of the day. Went to the gym instaed of wogging outside.
Did some chores this afternoon and when the rain stopped, decided to go to supermarket. Got about 2 blocks from the market, when I get into a car accident! :sad2:

Neither me nor the other driver were hurt (although I have a couple bruises), but the cars are a mess! We were heading in opposite directions and the other driver made a turn right across my path. He said he couldn't see me because of some parked cars. By the time I saw him, it was too late.

I don't know what's going to happen. I have front-end damage and his was passenger side front quarter-panel and wheel. He had a 2003 Honda, me a 1992 Plymouth.

I am so bummed right now.

Terri
