WISH'ers walking, running and "other"ing in 2012--General Discussion thread

Maura I was thinking of you as I hit 5.5 this morning, I don't recall knowing your miles but was thinking it was 18 or 20. It was really nice this morning. I am always worried about being cold especially with the wind off the lake. So wore a fleece & tech shirt along with a light running jacket. The jacket was around my waist by mile 1. There was no wind on the 1st 3 miles. I kept my gloves on though. Otherwise I have them on and off again for the entire distance. But what a change when we passed 3.5. Colder & a bit of wind. Felt like the temp dropped. I was only wearing a mesh running hat. Boy did my head cool off. Shortly after that I got a stitch & then had the slowest 2 miles of the day (13:02 and 13:06).

So got the miles done. 6 miles 12:45 avg. 1:16:52 (don't quote the seconds LOL)

Now I'm going to keep the puppy company on the couch. But I have already packed my gym bag :woohoo: No on to the nap and hopes that the icky weather will just go away.

Hope everyone else is having some nice weather, good training & some relaxation before the work week starts again :) Enjoy Sunday!!! :flower3:

*snore* :faint: <<<--(i know it says faint but let's pretent it's me napping)

Hi everyone

Diane - Glad to hear the weather was nice up in MI for a couple of days. The wind came and went Here on Friday. The tree on part of the run also blocked alot of them.

Maura- Good Job on your 18mi. The big race is coming soon. Xenia might have been a little bit close for you this year. I saw that about the showers. It starts and ends at the local Y. My Brother live about 5 miles out of town so I have a free nights stay the night before. I've done a couple of smaller 5K's but my longer races have all been larger. My biggest concern is toward the back not having anyone to "reel in" to encourage me to keep my pace up. Around my anticipated finish there are pockets of 2 or 3 finishers then a couple of minute gaps.

It's back to February Here in Ohio. It was 33 and Started to Snow/Sleet during my track workout. I did modified 800m repeats. I'm doing a combination of Bingham/Hadfield and Galloway in training for this Half. In Galloway's "Half marathon:You can do it" his modified 800's are 400 run/30-40sec walk/run rest of 800m. Followed by a 400m recovery lap. My Goal was to do them between 6:00 and 6:20 (12:00 - 12:40 per mile) based on Galloway and Mcmillan using prior race results. I ended up doing 5 repeats of 5:19 (way too fast), 5:39, 5:32, 5:42, 5:46. The last one I started slower and skipped the walk break. My heart rate peaked at about 78-80% of max on most of them. My last "race" was Thanksgiving, so it looks like even though I haven't gotten in the quantity of miles I would have liked, they have been quality miles. Now if I can just improve my stamina this final month of training.

Jeremy You are so good about those track workouts. I tend to be a easy day, hard day & if I want loops I go the opposite direction on the loop & do 8 miles. I haven't done the repeats yet and always thinking "wow! look at them logging those workouts" I saw someone doing hill repeats last weekend and thought I needed to add that to my weekly list of to dos.

Very inspiring workout! WTG!!!! Glad to hear you were able to get it in before too much icky weather. The snow arrived here a bit ago. Wishing you safe travels tonight & tomorrow morning. I am not looking forward to the AM commute.

WTG Jeremy, Diane and Maura I'll just live through you until I have more strength.

AFM I did get our for an hour walk yesterday, but after church and lunch out today I have been napping all afternoon.

At the Princess, I hope to make it to the castle with my girls, that will be about a 10mm and them if I can't keep up, I'll let them go. I will walk, crawl or what ever it takes to finish.

Diane please get our desk cleaned off before leaving for WDW. I hate coming back to unfinished work. ;)

I try to do 3 day a week so mine have tended to be long slow day, race interval day, and extended running day. The extended running day has been alternating between the 800m repeats and run .25mi/ walk 2:00. I don't really do any hill repeats. A couple of the places I run have good sized hills in the middle of them though. I don't do them as often as I should. I'm just starting to get into the speedwork. I'm not sure why today's were so much faster. The set 3 weeks ago was in the 6:20 range and my first set were in the 6:25 range. The only thing I can think of was being on a real track made the difference. The first 2 were on a lightly used stretch of road. I did have to watch out for cars and there was a slight grade of about 16 feet over the 800m. The track has maybe 2 feet.

Joan Yay on the walk! :woohoo: Napping today sounds like it was a good idea :thumbsup2 I'll work on the pile, wish I was heading to the race with all of you but hey the boss is on vacation so it's sorta like a vacation LOL

Jeremy Your doing great :cheer2:

Jeremy - I felt downright guilty when I read your weather report. We were in Myrtle Beach over the weekend for the Half Marathon, and it was 72 on Saturday. After a dip in the hot tub, I sat out on the balcony in my bathing suit and actually got sunburned. Wore shorts while walking on the beach, and I actually stuck my bare feet in the water. BRRRR!

Joan - Keep up the rest. Don't worry too much about getting that desk cleaned off! :rotfl:

Diane - As much as I hate the repeats at the track, I really think they help. We do 800m repeats, starting with 4 of them and adding one each week until we get to 8. (Or at least I did when I wasn't injured. Now I just watch. I much prefer the watching!)

I may have overdone it this weekend. Prior to Saturday, I'd only done 1.25 miles on the TM post-surgery. While spectating at the half, I calculated that I walked somewhere between 5 and 6 miles. Don't know how the PT's going to feel about that! I know how my body feels. I'm pretty sure I'm just as sore as the people who ran the entire 13.1.

DD took my bib and ran in my place. Her training consisted of a few 3 mile runs, and one 6 mile run. Her first half (the Indy last May) was a 2:50. Saturday she ran a 2:29. Oh to be young... But I got the beer at the end, since she's not old enough to drink it!:drinking1

Good luck to all the Princess runners!

Jackie

Jackie It must have been pretty exciting seeing the girls win the race...beating all the men...did they make a big deal out of it? It made the Charlotte Observer.

Diane I thought you were coming to the Princess??

Jackie Hope you're recovered from your unplanned mileage. And congrats to your daughter.

Joan Good luck at Princess. Right now I'm wishing I was going to be in FL, even if I can't run the race.

I had a good speedwork session today. 1 mile warmup, 1 mile at 7:19, 2miles at &:35 and 2x800 at 7:03 with 400 rest intervals and 1 mile cooldown. Yoga was more challenging than ususal, but felt good.

So I am already pulling my hair out about my 20-mielr this weekend. We are expecting more snow, and the roads around here are not clear/dry. So I have to figure out what to do, but can't really figure it until Saturday pretty much.

Oh well, at least it is sunny today!

Maura

I didn't realize we might be hit again. I thought we were only going to see a flurry. My co-workers were talking today, 1 is flying out tomorrow and is worried about tonights weather????? I might just be so deep in denial about any futher accumulation LOL I was totally focused on the temp for Sunday and whining. I really want to stop looking like the kid from the Christmas Story while I run :lmao: or a bandit.

I shoveled snow on Monday & decided that was replacing my gym workout ;) Tuesday I hit the gym for my TM short run and it went well. I started with a 0.25 sloooow walk. Hit 5 minutes and pushed it to running. I think I waited another 5 minutes till I hit it to my final running speed with a kick for the final 2 minutes. I am pleased with that. I lasted 25 minutes of continuous running at my outdoor run pace and no cranky legs. Sometimes it's just too tempting to start off too fast.

Jackie I hope you have completely recovered from cheering :) It's been remarked before how our wonderful team mates, friends & families do their own marathon of sorts chasing us around the courses. Cheering is definitely an ACTIVE activity :thumbsup2 Hope your much improved today.

Maura Remember the S word is a 4 letter word :rotfl:

Joan I'm not attending the Princess this year although if that "S" word keeps being used I might be tempted to fly away LOL

To those traveling to WDW this weekend have safe travels and tons of fun!!!!

Hope you all up North don't get hit with too much snow.

I got out and did 5 miles in 48 min. today. Not too much coughing, but my legs are already feeling it. I find that weird as I do over 20 miles a week and taking the last 2+ weeks off I wouldn't think would be that bad. That's all I'm going to do until the Princess, just wanted to see how it would feel and I my legs were getting that I need to run feeling.

Joan It seemed to take me a while to feel like I was at 100% energy after my cold. And even a small lack of energy will make your legs feel tired. So here's hoping you are all better by the weekend.

Diane The only S word I care to think about is....well I guess I don't have one.

Off to yoga tonight. I just finished my first stint as a volunteer tax preparer today (last week I just did pre-screening. Today I actaully did the returns! :scared1: )

Maura

Just got back from a trip to Austin, Texas. How nice it is to be able to run outside! Tomorrow I leave for our trip to Disneyworld to do the ESPN 5k.
Im nervous about being able to pace myself as Im used to running on a treadmill. I bought a Garmin but cant see to get it calibrated. Maybe you cannot do that on a treadmill?

Hi all

SUG78 - What Garmin did you get? I have the 305 and without a footpod it doesn't give distance on a treadmill.

Maura - Did you get the 20 miler in yet?

Jackie -Sounds like your daughter did well in her half.

Diane - Good job on the workout. I need to work up to my final pace slowly as well.

AFM- Wednesday my running was broken into 2 pieces. In the morning I did 3.5 miles walking 1:15/Running 1:30. In the evening I did 1.5 miles all running. That ties my longest run without a walk break. The first time was on a treadmill. This one was outside and along a slight grade. About 60' uphill the first 1/2 mile then downhill, then half way up and back down.

Friday Crosstraining aka shoveling the white stuff that starts with an S. We got a quick 4 inches and then the plow shoved another 6 inches to the end of the driveway.

Today - I think I'm fighting something but it all in the head so went out for 3.75 miles. Run 1:30/Walk 1:15. I was going to do a long run today I think I'm going to postpone it to Wednesday. The forecast is for 47 and sunny. Monday is supposed to be 55 but raining so will try to squeeze a workout in between showers.

johde- I also have the 305. I have the foot pod on my shoe. The garmin is showing I am running a lot faster than what my treadmill says like a 9 min mile versus a 10 min.mile. I don't know what to do...

Jeremy Won't rain be a nice change of pace from the recent white stuff? Hope your LR goes well, and congrats on your longest all-run run!

Well, of course it snowed more yesterday, and so this a.m. I went in search of snow-free streets in order to bang out another 20-miler. First 5 miles were on sreets that had a weird compacted slush mix. Thank goodness the temp is moderate (30) and so it didn't freeze and wasn't too slippery. After that, I crossed into the wealthier towns who actually salt their roads and so the remaining 15 miels were on roads that were just wet.

All in all, not too bad a run. I gave myself permission to go slow today to deal with the weather, but apparently my body didn't get the memo. Did my 20 slightly faster than training pace and am happy to be done. My watch beeped to finish at my on-road Hidden Mickey spot (too funny and random)

Had a yummy lunch of stuff purchased from the Polish Market--Hunter sausage, Krakowska, pierogi w/ kraut and mushrooms. Oh yeah!

Now off to other things.

Maura

Hi Everyone,

I don't get a chance to post much, but thought I'd pop in to say hi. Maura, it sounds like you are doing very well with your training. Very impressive especially this winter. I'll have to be sure to say hi at the Expo, because I'm sure I'll never catch up to you on the course.

My training for Boston has not been what I would have liked. Between the weather and starting a new job I just haven't been able to train a lot. I'm trying to push myself as much as I can to catch up, but don't want to get myself injured. I just plan to lower my expectation for finishing well and try to enjoy the race.

Hope all the Princess runners had a good race today.

Cindy

Sug78 - I don't have a foot pod, but you might want to try calibrating it outside first. If I remember, you can calibrate it either on a track or using the GPS.

Maura - I'm hoping the rain will get rid of the snow again for my 9-10 miler. Congratulations on getting the 20 miler done.

I got out and did 4.6 Miles today, walk .25 mi/run 2:00. The weather was up near 50 outside. I'm not planning on getting out tommorow so my total times for February was 50mi. Not were I was hoping to be at this point in training. The good thing is my speed is improving. My average pace for the month is a 14:17 mi, and that includes warmup and cooldown walking. Hopefully March will be a better month. An April 3rd half marathon sounded so good around Thanksgiving. Now I wonder if a later one would have been better.

Back from the Princess Half (aka weekend from Hell)..many obstacles that would take a book to tell. Bottom line my daughters and I finished...not together...but we all finished.

My DDs and I are very good at finding humor is some of the worst events.

Weather was warm...it was nice before the sun came up then humid and for those that finished late it must have been hot.

Hey Joan and Jackie: How are you 2 doing?

Hi CindyLou! Congrats on the new job and some :cheer2: with the Boston training! Hope its going smoother this week(end).

Hey hey Jeremy! How's the training going?

Hi Sug78! Hope your having tons of fun at the ESPN weekend and race :cheer2:

Maura? Did you run this morning or are you going out on Sunday? I opted for rain over possible slippery trails.

Last week my gym workouts went well, tiring and long but well. I have been adding in the leg machines again so my workouts are getting longer. But hey they seem to be working :thumbsup2 Tuesday's run was on the dreadmill so was only 2 miles but good. Friday I tried something new. Strength & Tone class. Wow! Whoa! I think she was trying to kill me with the downward dog into plane :lmao: But I shall carry forth and continue since its suppose to be good for me and running (someone remind me of that during next week's class!)

This weekend's weather was Saturday and high 30s and rain or Sunday and a morning start in the high 20's and snow and I'm betting slippery since there were so many puddles today. I opted for the rain. 6 miles doing the 4 min run and 1 min walk. Finished with a 12:30 avg.
