WISH'ers walking, running and "other"ing in 2012--General Discussion thread

Welcome Eva!:cheer2:
I am also trying to figure out whether I should do the 1/2 or the princess 1/2 next year. Already addicted and have only just begun.
sjlupin- I feel your pain! I've been running a year- almost every day 6-10 miles. Felt pretty wore out and kept getting injured. So I just took a step back, starting at square 1. Trying to do it right this time...I feel much better and am much more excited about running.

Thanks for the warm welcome. I will have to keep in mind all the advice I have been getting from this board. The number 1 thing seems to be careful not to push it. That is good advice for me. I have a tendency to over do things.

Diane - I've still been hitting the roads mostly at night but the snow has definitely slowed me down.

Maura - I think we've all had those runs that just felt terrible from the get go and never got better. They do make you appreciate the good ones though (or so I tell myself while I'm experiencing them).

Joan - That is cool about being in the program, I must have missed that last year.

Eva - Welcome. If you like running on the treadmill I think you'll love running outside. It really is so much more fun. When I signed up for my first 5K I kept hitting the treadmill until I was up to the 3.1 miles. I never really liked it but told myself I would do a 5K. I decided to do one 3 mile run outside before the race just to see what it was like and I was so surprised how much better it felt. Good luck.

I just got done with 5.5 outside. As much as I can't wait for spring it was a perfect winter night for running. It was 14 with wind chill, a brights sky, snow on the ground but the roads were clear, and not traffic.

Those of you doing the princess, I hope you all feel prepared now that you are in the home stretch.

Nice to hear I'm not alone! :goodvibes I started week 4 of C25K last night and it went pretty well!! :thumbsup2

Hi all

Eva - Welcome, everyone free to join in.

Lily - Shoveling Ice and snow has been my "cross training" this winter.

Frank - We were actually close to 32 on Monday here an hour south. I went out for a short run even though I wasn't originally planning on it.

Sug - Remember to try and get some rest days in there.

sjlupin - I half to fight the tendency to do all of my workouts fast. I try and keep most of my training at an "easy " pace, and only occationally push things. It doesn't always workout that way though.

AFM - This week and most of this month has been messed up and not according to plan.

Sunday - Did 4.8 miles around a local college. They had plowed real well and being the weekend it wasn't overly busy. The college is also build on a hill so I got some hill work in.

Monday - I don't normally do 2 days in a row but real cold weather was comming. I got a late start so only did a couple of miles. I decided to try a "Magic Mile" Galloway recommends to access your improvement. My first one a couple of week ago was 12:00. Mondays was 11:40. I didn't do a set walk/run interval but had set my Garmins virtual partner for an 11:45 Mile and ran ahead then walked until he caught up. I wasn't on a track so it wasn't level or completely clean. I can probably shave a few more seconds off it.

Thursday - Went to work early and hit the treadmill again. Did a slight variation on the extended running I did last week. After warmup I did 1 mile at 13:00 pace took a 2:30 walk break then did .5 miles at a 12:00 pace before before cooling down and heading to the showers for work. Made for a pretty good half hour workout. Completed 2.25 miles in 32 minutes.

The weather is supposed to improve here this next week, so hopefully I can get a more normal week in next week. It's been almost a month since I did my 7 mile lsd. I've done a couple of 6 miles since then. I have 6 more weeks of training before my half marathon on April 3rd.

We are supposed to get up into the 30's this week and maybe even 40 by Wednesday. Here's hoping they are right. I'm looking forward to a run when the wind chill is at least 2 digits.

I just looked at the extended forcast and their calling for 50's next weekend. But a chance of rain. If it comes the right time, that could go a long way towards melting the snow around here. I could even run in shorts and not be on a treadmill.

Hi everyone! Sorry I've been missing for so long. I'm always busy at work these days and now I have a permanent blogging gig (unpaid). I'm the fitness blogger over at the Disney Driven Life.

I can't believe that I leave in 9 days for my Princess trip. DBF ended up having a conference at YC from 2/21-2/23 so I was able to extend the trip and I'll be there for 10 days!!! Yay!

I'm not sure where to ask this or if I should, but I'm looking for those who have some runs under their belt and have dealt with sickness 2 weeks before the race.

I do okay, just under a 10 mm and I love to run and do three runs a week...one LR, one speed drill, and one tempo/race pace. My LR this weekend of 12 miles didn't happen and won't. Last Monday 7th, I got really sick every body part hurt or oozed you get the point. By Saturday I was out, flat in the bed and by Sunday I thought death was sure by morning.

This morning my DH hauled my butt to the DR. First she said no half in two weeks, but I got her down to if you feel better ok. but no running for now. She worried I lost 9 lbs. since my physical in Oct, but I told her that was mostly this last week. She wants me to drink 144 oz of water in the next 24 hours and lots of carbs the next week. I'm still waiting the blood results.

I think with my training, and I have done the Princess 2 times already I can do fine by just laying low and maybe sneaking a run in next Sunday maybe 6-8 miles.

My question is has anyone been sick after good training and still run okay and if so how did you bounce back?

TIA

Joan I don't really have any comparable experience to relay, but just wanted to say take it easy and rebuild your strength. I think you'll be fine for the race--may not be a PR, but you obviously have the training under your belt. I think it takes longer than we think to really get all of our strength back after being sick. So your plan to lay low sounds wise. Better to go in as well rested as possible than try to sneak in any last minute training.

Megan Have fun at Princess. I'll have to go check out the blog.

As for me....my long weekend in Florida did wonders for my mental health. I ran a half marathon on Saturday--jut a small local race--and felt good with no ITband issues. Spent another day just soaking up the sun (with a resulting sunburn) and now back to my regularly scheduled training. And we may see 50 on Friday!

I was sick for the week leading up to the WDW full this January and also leading up to a local half last September. It doesn't sound like I was as sick as you but for both I ended up with pretty good races. The Sept half was a PR and while I missed a Boston time in January I ran a respectable time.

I think it will hurt your time a bit but since you have the base in I think you'll be ok as far as not getting swept. Of course if you think you aren't well enough even to do the minimum pace I wouldn't push it and end up worse off in the end.

I was sick leading up to all three races I trained for in 2010, and I was on antibiotics for two of them.

My goal in 2010 was to run a half in under 2 hours, and I knew I could do it in May until I got bronchitis. The doctor told me not to run, but I didn't listen. I had to stop in the middle for a few minutes due asthma, but I still ran it in 2:03.

Take two in September, I got sick two weeks before and it developed into sinusitis. Again, I was told not to run. I was not 100% the day of the half, but I ran it in 1:58. I felt fine after that race and walked around the Columbus Zoo all afternoon.

Both times I decided in advance I would stop running if it got bad, and I tried to prepare myself for that possibility. I don't regret running either half. I hope you feel better for the Princess!

After I replied, I realized I've followed this thread for awhile, but never talked about my goals:

1. I want to run a half in under 1:55. I'm running the Princess, but it will not happen then as I'm doing that for fun with lots of picture stops.

2. To finally run the Pittsburgh Marathon.

3. To work on speed, especially with 5k races.

I love reading about all of your goals- it keeps me motivated!

Thanks for all the replies Maura, Frank and WVUfan

DR called today to see how it was going. Seems I will live. She's pretty sure it was a virus. I need to continue to hydrate, gradually increase my diet (ie gain some weight back...never been told that), rest and get my while blood cell count up. Except for the low blood count all else seems to be working. She had been concerned for my kidneys. According to the test they ran, I am the healthiest sick person :rotfl2:

So for now I'm home, bored and looking forward to going to Disney.

Nice race report Maura I read on another thread. I knew you would regain the spirit.

Megan I look forward to reading those reports. I took a quick look.

WVUFan great goals for the year..much success to you

Joan I have nothing in the form of advise/experience but am relieved to hear you are the healthiest sick person :flower3: Keeping you in my thoughts/prayers that you continue to kick that virus soonest.

WVUFan Welcome! Awesome goals :) Hope you get tons of wonderful pics & memories during the Princess.

Megan Have fun at the Princess! I did a quick drive by on the blog during lunch today. I'll have to check it out more when phones aren't ringing which takes me back to Joan in a second... back to the blog I had been looking for running blogs especially Disney ;) Great to see someone is writing one. :thumbsup2

Joan this might give you a laugh. Back during the holidays as I was trying to get everything done before my Marathon trip I kept getting loaded with work. At the Christmas Party I arrived at the conference room late. My ever so wonderful co-workers left me a seat.... right next to the boss. I looked at the table made sure they knew I knew what they did and walked up to my boss and held out my hand and introduced myself (never mind that I sit outside his door) "Hi, My name is Joan" :lmao: Every so often he refers to me as Joan now. LOL Not sure why that name popped in my head. I hadn't been on the DIS that day. But hey since your name really IS Joan, you have a pile of work sitting on my desk. Can you clear that off? :lmao:

My training week is going well. Did 8 miles on Sunday. Did the full gym workout on Monday. Spent 30 minutes of quality time (whining) on the Elliptical tonight. Hope everyone else's week and training is going well :flower3:

Hi Joan,

I am more of a walker than runner, but I did the AirForce 1/2 Marathon less than 3 weeks after having gallbladder surgery. Just take it easy and listen to your body. It may not be a PR, but you should have no problem finishing. And if you don't finish, at least you tried. But like I said, I think you'll be fine.

Susan

Hi Everyone

Diane - Good to hear your training is going well. I pretty much did my 8 miler for my April 3rd half today.

Joan - I hope your feeling better. Like everyone else has said, let your self heal, don't try to set a PR and you'll probably be fine.

Maura - Glad you had a good race.

Good luck to everyone running in the Princess.

Monday - 4 Miles 14:25 pace Run .25 miles/walk 2 minutes
Wednesday - 5 Miles 14:08 Pace Run 1:15/ Walk 1:30
Friday - 7.8 Miles 14:32 Pace Run 1:14/Walk 1:30.

Today's was probably a little bit fast. My goal pace is a 13:45. The weather today was almost perfect. 57 Degrees and sunny. Just a little bit of wind at times.

Looking back, I also realized I didn't give everybody my new goals either. I'm currently getting ready for the Ohio River Road Runners half marathon in Xenia, Oh on April 3rd. So won't be going up and seeing Frank in Cleveland this spring. It's my first smaller half marathon. Last year it had 156 marathoners and 577 half marathoners. So a big difference from the 10,000-15,000 in Cleveland and Columbus last year. But at $25 the price was right. My realistic goal time is to break 3:00. If training finishes up well, a 2:50-2:55 might be in the cards. I would love a 2:45 and be able to submit a time for the Disneyland half but I don't think it's in the cards. But I've overestimated my finish times every race so far.

WTG Jeremy! I hope you had some nice weather for your miles today :) It's awefully windy up here in MI today. Poor woodpecker had the darnest time trying to land on the feeder. :( But hey the sun is out so a big YAY!!!! :thumbsup2

Sending speedy thoughts for you race :wizard: You can totally do it!!! :cheer2:

I've had a pretty good workout week. Hit the gym all 3 days I was suppose to. My Thurs turned more hectic than I planned on earlier in the week so that is just a lost day I can't get back but hey if it gets the boss on his way to the airport then we'll all be happier. Joan the man piled our desk again. Stayed layed, went in on my day off and stayed later. I'm half tempted to move my desk while he is gone :lmao: I might have to see if there are empty boxes and hide all my stuff & leave a note next to my door saying "this office has relocated" :lmao: I have 'crime' tape from the halloween bins too LOL

Hope everyone has a great weekend! Those racing have a wonderful time & may the wind be at your back! :cheer2:

Well, got in my 18 miles before the weather hits. It was so nice to be able to run on dry roads--just the occasional patches of ice to hop over. And no frozen water! And no gloves! So all in all it was pretty darn okay. would have been stellar if it wasn't for the fact that I seem to have re-strained an oblique or rib muscle. This time, it defintely bothered me while running. Like having a side stitch the entire time. I think I'll see if I can have DH try to tape it and see if that helps.

Hope everyone is enjoying the weekend.

WVUFan Great goals! I used my post-Disney race winter last 2 years to work on faster 5k and 10k. It made for a nice break from training for long races. Good luck with Pittsburgh marathon. Hopefully it is all at river-level. Otherwise, killer hills!

Jeremy I looked at that Xenia race. I thought it was neat that they advertised post-race showers! And small races are just as fun in my opinion as bigger ones. Plus, not as much dodging and weaving.

Diane Congrats on your recent fine workouts. Hope you got your miles in this morning. It was nice that the weather is holding off til later this afternoon.

Maura
