Disneybound- totally understand about the training plan! I finally "chose" Galloway but I still am struggling with the motivation to run on the days when I have worked 12 hour shifts... I SO want to run in the morning when I get up but when I get home at night after being on my feet all day all I want to do is go to sleep! I need to know everybody's secret!

:cutie:I ran SLOW, it was hard to get around the crowds that were strictly speed walking with little to no running, and then I stopped to take some pictures with characters. I think if I did it again I would just run and enjoy without trying to carry a camera with me (I had a waist pack but it was such a pain). I loved it...I think i expected a little better from disney...but it was fun and I honestly didnt feel tired at all (I napped right beforehand) and I had been down at WDW going strong all week at the parks prior. I really enjoyed running at night a lot better than early in the morning :goodvibes

I so wish I had been able to run THIS half because I am tecnically not a morning person but I knew I would never be in shape by it- maybe next year! I am glad you did so well!

We are heading off to Disney next Thursday and taking my 11 year old nephew who has never been before! Can't wait:cool1:

I'm finally starting to feel a little better. Unfortunately, my MS has decided to act up a little bit, but doesn't seem to be affecting my lower half right now. Thankfully, I can still walk even if my hands aren't cooperating. :rotfl:

It's gorgeous outside! I did 3 miles at lunch yesterday and today simply because I couldn't afford to skip a 70ish degree day! I wasn't moving very quickly either day, but it was nice to get out. Would you believe I finally got to actually stroll by and look at the houses that I've been dashing past for the last 6 months? :lmao:

I am also super excited because I think I FINALLY figured out the answer to my blister problem! I've tried every kind of sock and foot 'preparation' known to man and still get blisters on the balls of my feet every single time I go over 2 miles. But, when I did my 8 miles on Sunday I wore Injinji socks (with the toes) inside a pair of double-layer Wright socks and I got NO blister. Even without taping and Body Gliding and all the extras. Thinking it was a fluke, I repeated that yesterday and today and I have no blister! I'm SO excited! Granted it's a little bulky wearing two pairs of socks, but they don't feel that bad. Now I just need to buy more of each type of sock. I only have 2 pairs of each...

Oh sending good vibes Meredith!!!

Awesome news about the blisters!!! A friend of mine was fussing about getting blisters last night - but in her case as it turns out, she was wearing cotton socks and shoes she's had for a while that weren't specialty fitted - just grabbed off the wall in Foot Locker or something. *headdesk* I've tried to set her straight.

Glad the race went well!! Doing a night race is on my to-do list.

Sorry about your MS acting up, hope you get better soon. Glad your blister problem has gone away with your new socks!!

As for me, I got 3 in yesterday and 11 this morning. This morning was a good negative split run. Don't know if it was b/c I was going harder or just excited, b/c it was my last "long run" before next weekend. Sunday is a nice easy 7-8 and then next week even less. Tonight I'm going to the Giants/Braves game, super excited for my Giants. :woohoo: Hopefully pitching is just as good and the offense a little better.

As for tomorrow.... :cheer2::cheer2: Geaux Tigers!! I hope you cream the Gators!! :cheer2::cheer2:

Just kidding Leigh! :goodvibes I have a feeling it'll be the other way around. Let's just say I'll be pleasantly surprised if the win, but keep the score close.

Hope everyone has a great weekend!

I hope everyone is having a great weekend! Is it as beautiful where you are as it is here?? Gorgeous!

I got up this morning and did 8 miles and then a half mile cool down. Next weekend I'll do 6 and then it's time for my first Half Marathon. I'm ready for it to just BE here already!

Meredith: Good luck with your half! I have one under my belt as well, and I remember the excitement and nervousness. You'll do great!
Sorry to hear your MS is misbehaving. Are things any better now? Yah to no blisters! I don't think I could be a runner if I got blisters all the time. I've only had one in the last couple of years. Of course, I've lost 2 toenails, so I'm not injury free! ;)

Kim: Good job on your runs! Does running negative splits mean that you get faster with each mile? I hear this all the time and just assumed that's what it meant.

Honeybrook: I wish I was joining you. I am missing WDW so much right now! But, at least I'll be there in January. :) There is nothing like taking a child for the first time!

Shannon: I'm happy to hear you had such a good time. I am nervous about trying to get around everyone also. I don't want to do the picture thing, and I've never run in a big race, so January is probably going to be a big shocker for me!

Disneybound: I had to do some tweaking to get the right formula for myself when I was looking for a training plan. For my half, I felt that I absolutely needed a 12 miler or better. I know everyone says you can get by with 10, and I'm sure most people can, but I needed to know. My philosophy is that I can do absolutely anything for 1 mile, so running 12, I knew I was set. Now, I'm doing Goofy, so I will have to change my philosophy because I will not train up to 38 miles! ;) My longest run in my new training plan is 22, which means I'll have 4.2 extra miles on tired legs. So, you have to figure out what's going to work best for your way of running.

My new training program has me pushing my long runs for 2 weeks and then, a nice easy LR. So, I only had 6 miles today, which was a pleasant break. I have 14 next Saturday, which is the longest I've ever run. I'm nervous about it. My calves are totally messed up right now. I don't know what I've done, but the bottom of my calves hurt so bad, it's hard to walk by the end of the day. The funny thing is that, while running, I don't feel them at all. I've got 2 days of no running, just zumba once, so I'm hoping to get some healing accomplished in that time.

Thanks Tandy! I AM feeling much better today than I did last week. Thankfully, I still have just as many good days as I do bad ones. Probably more good days actually. So, I'm not really complaining. I just have to know my limitations and wait for the good days!

I'm really excited about the no blisters thing. I know it sounds silly, but that was a huge deal for me! Today during my LD, I did my sock trick but still felt like I was ending up with a blister. I was so aggravated! Lo and behold, I get done, sit down, and no blisters! :confused3 I'm excited about that! That makes me feel a heck of a lot better about my 5K and Half in 2 weeks! Hopefully I can do the 5K and still have 'fresh feet' for the Half the next day. :lmao:

I'm still waiting on my first toenail issues. Not looking forward to that.

I really like the feel of a big crowd for the mutual "runner excitement" you feed off of from everyone around you. It was only tough in some spots with getting around everyone, but I had lots of people cheering me on (other runners) and I was doing the same for them, it made the 13.1 miles feel like a lot less :thumbsup2 Good luck wtih the one in January, I am sure you will love it!!

Just wanting to check in. It's been one week since I ran my first 5k-- Mickey's Halloween 5K through the MK. I ABSOLUTELY adored the experience. Running at Disney was everything I had hoped it to be during the hours of training! My time wasn't good (although I wasn't last!), and I'm glad it was a fun run and the sweeper police weren't out in force. My knee was really bothering me and became worse the next days after the race. I went to a sports med dr. and lo and behold-- I have a stress fracture under my left knee. I'm pretty devestated about the whole thing-- started crying when the dr. told me it will take 2 months to heal, etc. I'm on crutches for a minimum of 3 weeks.

I've lost 40 lbs since starting to run 3 months ago and I'm scared to death I'm going to gain a bunch back. But I'm just going to have to put on my big girl panties and deal with it so that won't happen! And I'm really disappointed because I planned to begin training this week for the 2011 Princess Half. Not going to happen I'm afraid! Maybe 2012! In the meantime, I'm going to set my sights for the ESPN Weekend 5K in March 2011. That timing should be doable with allowing plenty of time for healing and slow, steady training. But I really need to have that goal set to keep myself sane...

MEREDITH: You have such an inspirational attitude on your MS! The last thing I should be doing is whining about a 2 mos. stress fracture. I needed that reality check!

Best wishes to everyone in their training and upcoming races! I'll be living vicariously through you guys for a while!!

Mamacrush: I'm SO sorry to hear about your stress fracture. The good news is, you stopped running and went to the doctor. Some people just don't. Could you ride a stationary bike while healing? That might be an option for you. Or, do you have an indoor pool near you where you could swim for exercise? I would hate to see you lose some of your progress and momentum due to this. :)

Oh MamaCrush...I'm SO sorry about your knee! I would literally be in tears too! I know how frustrating it is to be making such good headway and then having to stop and take a break until you can pick it back up again. It just makes you want to scream!

Do you think maybe you could do the Princess 5K? Then you could still be down there with us for the Princess weekend? (I'm being completely selfish here, since I want as many of our group down there as possible ;) ). But, after 2 months of good healing you would still have 2.5 months before the Princess weekend...

Just sayin'

{{HUGS}}

I hope you feel better soon.

Does running negative splits mean that you get faster with each mile? I hear this all the time and just assumed that's what it meant.

Hi Tandy- a negative split just means that the last half is faster than the first half. So if you do a 6 mile run, the last 3 are faster than the first 3.

Congrats on the Halloween 5K! I love the Disney 5ks, they're so much fun!! I'm so sorry about your knee. Hopefully it will heal faster and you can do the Princess 5K or at least train well for ESPN like Meredith suggested! :goodvibes

I am so sorry to hear aboutyour knee, I am so glad you had a great 5k experience though. A 5k is how I was hooked last year and I just did the half marathon at disney.

I had a stress fracture in my foot after I completed a 10k back in March of this year and it was so hard to make myself not go out and just run on it, but because I followed doctors orders I am doing great now and I rebounded quickly with approval from my doc

Hey all, hope everyone's doing well, randomly stalking the chicago marathon finish times today to see how some friends are holding up. Hear its rather warm out there, so if anyone on the team did it I'm all for hearing about it.

Ran about 20 today. Around 7:20's. Beautiful day here in DC.

MamaCrush - good job on the 5k, sorry about the stress fracture. Here's where you get to discover what fun cross training can be. AquaJogging is actually the most popular recovery activity for that type of injury, as you get to go through the same motion as running. As the joint gets better you can use the elliptical or bike as well. When you go back to running, for the first few weeks focus on taking smooth strides, with your feet landing below you not in front of you. It might feel like a very short stride, but it will keep the impact from causing any more damage. Think light on your feet, the softer your feet hit the ground the less stress your knee will absorb. Also land with a slightly bent knee. Whatever you do obviously move into it slowly, as it doesnt take much to make a stress fracture worse, and require surgery or massive amounts of time off. My friend had to give up a whole year.

Thanks everyone for your encouraging words. For the next 3 weeks my dr. doesn't want me to do a thing-- no water work, elliptical-- nada. She'll re-evaluate the situation when I see her again after the 3 weeks are up. I'm trying to be upbeat about the whole thing, and for the most part I am. I just have to vanquish some personal demons to make sure I keep my eating in check during this down time! But I will definitely follow my drs directions to a T-- I really don't want to be down for long!

I ran my longest run so far today, 6 miles in 67 mins. I was so happy, I totally get that runners high and I love it. DH was supposed to go with me but his leg hurt so I braved it alone. I had one long road that was a slow climb uphill but it wasn't that bad. I think I made it such a bigger deal in my head that doing it wasn't as bad as I had thought. It's all a mental game. I'm going to try sign up for a 10k before the half in January, just have to find a local one. After todays run, I feel like a 10k is very doable for me at this point. Hope everyone is doing well!

Oh MamaCrush, I am so sorry to hear about your knee. I would have cried like a baby : ( You did the smart thing and got it taken care of right away. Congrats on the 5K and the great weight loss you've had running. I'm sure you'll be able to keep it off especially because you are so concious (sp?) about it.

Hi everyone! Hope everyone is having a good weekend.

Mamacrush. I am so sorry to hear about your knee. That totally stinks.

Tandy - I agree with you. I think i am going to tweak Hal Higgdons plan to take me to 12 miles instead of 10. I think i will be happy there.

Kim. well gosh darn it!!!! Did you guys luck out there in the end!!!:mad: my gosh my nerves were shot during that game! It was a good game. Only for you will I say congrats. ;)

20 miles?? couldnt imagine it lol

When I had the stress fracture in my foot, I did exercises and jogging in the pool and it was GREAT...I felt like it gave me an excellent workout and helped me transition back to running easily

I finished my last run this morning before my race this weekend. My legs are so tired right now, but I have tomorrow and Saturday off. I pretty much had my nerves somewhat under control this week, but I just printed out my race confirmation to bring w/ me up to the expo, if you can call it that, tonight, and I am now a full blown ball of nervousness. I totally forgot what it was like to be nervous for a race! I've been doing them so often, race day has become almost routine this year, but this one's a full so a little difference there. I get excited for a moment and then my nerves and scaredness (is that a word) take over. Unfortunately, the expo is nothing more than pick up your bib number and bag check. If you want race stuff, they send you over to the Nike Store across the street. I went to one of the Nike Stores a couple of weeks back and picked a a jacket and shirt so I'm good on that front. Weather, well, CA has been absolutely crazy this fall so far. This week it has been hot for October, in the 90s this week, even in San Francisco. But thankfully it's starting to cool down and it should be mid 60s on Sunday. I'm praying for the fog to roll in as well.

So if I can walk and function on Sunday night, I'll come back and write up a race report and try to post pictures of the necklace. If not, I'll do it Monday when I have to hobble back into work.

Leigh- I could not believe that game either. I have no clue how Miles does it, let alone the people in Baton Rouge. Between Miles's coaching plays/misplays the past couple of weeks and the Giants over the weekend, I've had about 10heart attacks. :rotfl:

Matt- have you qualified for Boston? I got an email from them today, not that I could qualify to run but b/c I did the 5k last year, that registration is opening on Monday. My dad has to register on Monday, last year sold out so quickly. I can't wait for that trip, I love Marathon Monday in Boston- not only is it an awesome city, it's hands down the best and most inspirational race I've ever been too!

Anyways, hope everyone has a great weekend and that Nor'easter isn't that bad!! I can already hear the phone calls from my sister tomorrow night!

My dr. won't let me even do any water exercises right now-- but I'm hoping she'll let me start at the beginning of December! I've also heard running in the water will help correct any weird form habits you've developed.
