I did it! I finished the 5K on Saturday and my very first Half today! I wasn't setting any speed records by any means, but my goals for walking the Half were simple. Finish upright, smiling, as close to 16 mpm as possible, and still walking under my own power. I did all of those things. *laugh* And I managed my best 5K walking time yet (even though I wasn't pushing since I was nervous about the half today).

I'm very pleased with myself right now. If only I could walk without hobbling. I'm SOOOO glad I took tomorrow off from work! :rotfl:

Congrats on your 1st 1/2!! Glad to hear that both races went well!!

ok.. so I need some doctor advice.. I have been having some pain in my right hip/leg area... it doesn't feel like it the bone.. but maybe muscle.. It tolerable but its pretty tender. It started up last weekend on my long run.. went away after about a day.. I felt it during my shorter ones this week, but not so much.. and then again today after I ran 5 miles it started to hurt again.. Its still sore now, but its hard for me to tell if its my hip.. or just the muscle around it.. of course Dr. Google isn't helping because I could have a number of ailments according to that!
I guess I am just wondering if I should go see someone about it now or wait and see if it gets better.. and who the heck would I go see?
Thanks guys!

Can't help you on the doctor front, but I do know some stretches. If you stand about a foot away from a wall, brace yourself with one arm and lean your hips in towards the wall and then switch. It's kinda like making a "C" with your body if that makes any sense. The other one is if you get into a low lunge type position, lean your upper body back slightly and turn to the opposite side of the leg is forward. So if your left leg is forward, you lean back and twist your upper body towards the right. Hope that helps!!

I ran a 5k Saturday (first race after returning home from the Wine & Dine half) still waiting for my time to be posted, but I think its a minute better than my usual time (which is still slow :rotfl:) and Ill take it :thumbsup2

Great job on the 5K!!

Took it easy last week. Not much running, but getting back into it again this week. Hopefully I'll get in 4 or 5 days of running. 11 weeks til the WDW Marathon!!:mickeyjum:mickeyjum

Kim: Did you have to bring up how long we have left? I am stressing. Okay, not really, but man that seems close. It's okay to take some weeks slow. It's part of the process.

Shannon: A PR is wonderful! Great job! :thumbsup2
I've had to quit going to zumba 2 times a week and move to just once a week, and that is bad enough. I don't know how I lived without it for so long.

Disneybound: I'm definitely not a doctor, but have been going through my own achy training issues. Is it the front, back or side of the leg? I have been having a lot of hamstring glute issues, and am just icing and ibuprofening. I'm doing much better. But, I don't know if you should just rest or not. Sorry that you're hurting.:sad1:

Meredith: Congratulations on your first half! :cheer2: Mine was in April and I felt such a sense of accomplishment! Great job.

Matt: That is a wonderful race. Good luck with the bridge! How exciting!!!!

I am feeling so good after finishing my 18 miles on Saturday. I had a ton of treadmill problems and did 8 miles on the TM and then the other 10 on the trail. I got to the trail as fast as I could, so I think it should stilll count as a LR, right? I have a nice, easy week this week with a LR of 6, so I'm happy about that. Then, 20 next Saturday. Yuck! My muscle problem is feeling so much better. Lots of icing and no pain after the 18 miles! :thumbsup2

What do you all wear when it's cold outside? I run 2 days per week in the afternoon but Saturday mornings I run early. Last Saturday it was 30 degrees, too cold for me in my shorts.

When it gets cold here, I wear my running tights(pants). For the top part, if its really cold, I wear a shirt and a running pullover or jacket. If it's cold, but I know I'll get warmer, I'll go out in a short sleeve shirt and my running sleeves. That way when I get warmer, I can take off the sleeves or pull them down just around my forearms. I also have a pair of thin running gloves. I always run w/ my hat on, but when I'm in Boston in the winter, I'll go out with this headband thing that fits over my hat and protects my ears too.

I learned over this last winter that I need to start out being really cold, or I'll burn up. So, I wear running tights, but if it's above freezing, I'll wear capris. Then, I layer the top. And, I will wear gloves if it's really cold, but, again, it has to be below freezing. I have all those cute headbands, but end up wearing my hubbys knit stocking cap on those really cold days. And, I carry an old fashioned handkerchief. The tissues just dissolve, and my nose runs like crazy when it's cold.

Yay for you girl! I know I am a few days late but I have just got around to playing catch up on here after my disney vacation and getting back in the groove here at home!

My running progress is still slow. Still doing a jog/walk where I have built up to jog 5min and walking 2min. My pace is still super slow but I'm not giving up yet.
I DO have a question- I do most of my "running" on the treadmill because I often go to work when it is still dark and come home when it dark too. On the occasion I do get to run outside, I use a garmin forerunner 405 to track my distance/pace/speed. On the treadmill my pace averages about a 17mm heck I HAVE to jog when the thing goes more than 3.5 mph. But when I am outside my speed and pace are greatly improved! Does anyone know if treadmills are usually a pretty accurate gage? I should also state I have a pre-calculated route outside so I don't think that I am just doing a shorter distance outside in the same amount of time...

Thanks! I don't want to buy too much stuff at first and then not use it.

I have a 5k in 2 weeks but it doesn't start until 10, hopefully it will not be too cold.

so thats it, just went for a quick 3 mile run this morning. Nothing left btw now and Marine Corps Marathon. Obviously I'm bouncing between nervous and excited/confident. Sometimes I'm ready for this, 7:15 all the way, gonna qualify for boston, to ok 7:20s all the way gonna beat my time from last year to yea gonna be falling apart and wont make it to the finish.

I swear its like an arms race with running. When I first started out 5k's were daunting. It was very nerve racking those first few 5ks. Worrying about the hills, not being able to finish, etc. Then I decided a few months in to go run a half marathon (before even running a 10k - so take that running). That gave me several years of confidence for 5k's and 10k's. Then I started getting back into longer running doing another 2 half marathons before starting up on marathons. Now of course I'm on my 4th marathon, but still scared that I won't be able to finish etc. Really is the only way to get over this marathon finishing fear to go pound out an ultra. And then to do that I'll have to have all the dread while prepping for and running an ultra often enough to make a marathon feel like a simple doable run. Alternatively I could look into an ironman (which i kind of am)

sorry just rambling :)

I had the same problem and It was annoying to say the least,,,,I got the new Droid phone and it has app called Runkeeper...It works on GPS and downloads automatically to your computer...it is awesome and now I know my times are acurate. Garmin would be better but this is FREE>

I use the same app! I am usually in a group for my long runs, and I check it against the garmin folk. FWIW, it's usually a little behind on distance, .1-.2, compared to them.

Someday I will cave and get a Garmin....

GOOD LUCK tomorrow Matt!!!

Good luck Matt! You'll do great! I can't wait to hear all about it!

As for measuring, I really feel like I'm registering slower on the treadmill too. At least, I feel like I'm not getting nearly as far if I spend the same amount of energy inside as I do outside (I have to work harder to do the same distance in the same time inside than I do outside - does that make any sense at all? It does in my head :lmao: ). Maybe that's all mental? I do think the Garmin makes ALL the difference. I actually got an old used 301 given to me for free. I never would have spent the money on it back when I got it because I didn't know if I was going to stick with this. Now that I know I am (and the battery on the 301 I have is starting to lose charge somewhat) I bought a 205 from Amazon when it was the Deal of the Day 2 days ago. Only $98! I should have saved that money, but I was afraid to pass up the deal and then have mine die on me. I've gotten TOO dependent on it! I just love coming back and looking at it all on the computer. I'm such a geek!

Good luck Matt! You'll do a great job, I'm sure. Can't wait to hear about it!

Lots of luck Matt :wizard: I am sure you will do great and I cant wait to hear about it!!

I ran a 5k yesterday - beautiful weather - very nice flat course...and I finished 4 minutes faster than usual!!! I swear there was something wrong with the timing :rotfl: but everyone I ran with did better than usual and their watches clocked us right at 3.1 miles with the same times

My Nike+ has become unreliable and inaccurate...I need to get a garmin watch but I don't know where to begin in picking one out :confused3

Hope everyone is having a great Halloween weekend pirate:

I'm tapering for Marine Corps Marathon in DC. Got my bib number today - 2600 :).
I hope it went well!! let us know!

thanks Kim.. I think it was the Asics... I rested all week... and went out on Sunday and ran 5.5 with my brooks and NOTHING.. nada.. zilch.. no pain what so ever.. so I won't be running in those Asics anymore.. ;) I'll use those as my normal sneaker wearing shoes.

My Nike+ has become unreliable and inaccurate...I need to get a garmin watch but I don't know where to begin in picking one out :confused3

Nike+ had NEVER been accurate for me. I have calibrated that dang thing numerous times and its never right... I used that and my Garmin outside once and my Garmin had me at 5 miles while the Nike+ said I ran 7.5! :lmao: Wish I could take the Nike+!!

now, the NIke+ GPS is great.. if you have a smart phone, that is correct.

Well we leave in 2 days for Disney!! yippie!!! and of course my oldest son was puking on Monday and today he has diarrhea! yippie! figures huh??

I hope it passes quick and no one else gets it, I have been spraying lysol all over the place! :rotfl:

Have a great week everyone!

Hope he feels better soon!! Hopefully itll be a quick bug that no one else gets and passes quickly...fingers crossed!! I dont know what it is about disney but I always get sick right before or at the end of our trip :rotfl:

Matt: Well??????

Disneybound: I'm glad your legs are better? My shoes tend to make all the difference. I'm sorry about your son. I hope he gets well quick! We have been sick on a cruise, in Europe, and in WDW. Better to be sick at Disney than at school! :thumbsup2

Shannon: Great job on the 5K! I love when my runs are so good, that at the end, I question that I've gone far enough! :thumbsup2

I have the Garmin 305. I got it on a Deal of the Day sale earlier this year on Amazon. It is awesome!!!!! I don't know how I got along without it before. As for the treadmill, I run faster on it than I do outside, but that makes sense. Are treadmills accurate? They can be, but some aren't. Mine seems to be, but I've had the stupid TM repair guy out here 4 times, so it had better be! ;)

I took about 5 days off from running to try to get my booty to stop hurting. It didn't work. I felt great yesterday morning, but then I ran yesterday and today and, guess what? It hurts again. I guess I just get to be in pain from here on out. I think I'll take at least 2 or 3 weeks off after Goofy. I can't do it now. I've got a 20 miler this Saturday, and am kind of excited about it!

Leigh!! Have fun, and I'll be there Saturday night after my race. Don't need much room, I can sleep in the closet or the tub!!:rotfl::rotfl:

I've taken the past couple of weeks off like you. I was supposed to run Monday morning, but I didn't want to and there was no way that anyone could have dragged me out of bed to do it either. But went to the gym on Tuesday and have 9-10 tomorrow morning. Got the Santa Barbara 1/2 marathon on Saturday, which works out perfectly, b/c I'll be watching the NY race on Sunday. I'm more excited about that than the 1/2. After that, mileage starts picking back up for the WDW race.

Matt gave me a tip about the 20 that I'll pass on to you. Break down the mileage and it'll be a lot easier. And don't forget gu or something like that to keep up your energy. Good luck!!!

And my Giants won!! I am so happy about that, it's like a kid at x-mas time. Couldn't sleep at all on Monday, and have had a huge grin ever since the game, I still can't contain my excitement.

HEYYYYY Everyone. Sorry I've been vanished, work stuff, out in Chicago right now :). So the marathon went ok I guess. didnt get my 3:10 sadly, PR-ed for a half marathon at like 1:33 or so. I spent too much time in a very tightly packed 3:10 pace group (about 10 miles) when I backed off like 10-20 seconds behind the group my life was much happier, but the energy had already been spent. Had to walk a water stop at 24/25. Made it in 3:20. Not bad, now I'm recovering for Disney, and maybe give it another go. But I wont get into a fray like that as it was just a waste of energy constantly ducking and dodging.

Yes, I'm also seriously looking for a Garmin, I found the nike + to be ok as long as the terrain you calibrated it on was the terrain you were running on. It loves totally flat, but really its just counting your steps and hoping for the best.

I'm considering picking up a Garmin around the holidays, so if anyone has any recommendations, 405, 110, older ones etc I'd love to hear reviews and comparisons from people who actually use them.

Oh also I picked up a long sleeve running shirt at a RoadRunnerSports (it was Saucony). Its really comfortable and has a light that clips to the arm, very useful for the shorter days, of course I goto chicago for work and bring the shirt but leave the light. Gonna go see what I can do in the very early AM before I have to be at work.

Oh also another fun thing I got at the expo, was a mizuno breath thermo shirt. If you're at an expo and they have a demo its pretty cool, it gets warmer as it gets wet. Obviously its no where near as pronounced, but I've been rather comfortable in this shirt down to like mid 30's.

I heard that the 5K sold out adn the marathon and half are getting close. I hope everyone got the entries they wanted.

And finally I'm going to be emailing runDisney, I want that bag, it looked really cool, but of course I signed up for next years marathon while we were still at disney.
