WISH Away the Pounds June Challenge -- Starting a Successful Summer!

I use MyFitnessPal. I know a lot of people here also use it - if anyone else needs another MFP friend, I am eclemens428 over there. There are a lot of DIS ladies on MFP and we all support each other, especially when recording exercise!

Summery wishes for a great day for everyone!

My sister LOVES MyFitnessPal. I have never been able to get into it. I use NOOM and I love it. I have had great success with both though. I think it is just the practice of logging it. You can physically see what you are doing and it makes you feel good versus just doing things and not having any idea at all about where you are or where you want to be.

I know I have only been on this challange since Sunday but I am still so motiviated! (ps excuse my spelling, I am terrible at it and I can't get this spell checker to work!)
I started tracking my steps yesterday and I did almost 5000! I am still at a loss at how people can do 10000 regularly a day but I am shooting for it! I am also looking for reasons to move, I planted some flowers, parked further away from the store, took the stairs etc... I am still having soda withdrawals though lol Day 4 and I am still fighting them off! I have been tempeted but I have not broken!!

Seems like we have plenty of people signing up!! I hope to get around to update the first page tonight with all the participants. So far I got quite a few PMs!! Great to see some new people joining!

For all the newbies: I can only encourage you to take part in the discussion now and then. Reply to a question of the day, just add a comment, come here to vent about things or let us know if you had a good moment! This thread thrives on lots of chat! Personally, I found that taking an active part always gives some positive energy and new motivation!

QOTD for Monday:

What is your favourite summer fruit and summer vegetable? If you have a recipe to go with your answer we would all love to read it!

Thanks for hostessing this month, Magdalene! :flower3:

My favorite summer fruit is a nice sweet nectarine! :goodvibes They aren't around very long but they are wonderful while they are here. I'm a big berry fan, too.

My favorite summer vegetable is corn -- okay, I know it is a starchy vegetable. ;) DH and his family are quite particular about their corn being from the midwest. When they say start the water boiling and then pick the corn they aren't kidding. :rotfl:

I also really love being able to use basil and chives from the garden for cooking this time of year. :cool2:

I love love love avocados. I usually just eat them with salt. Salt is my weakness and I eat way too much of it. Planning on trying a recipe that I found for baked avocado with a breadcrumb crust.

My favorite veggie is peas but it's usually boiled in butter which isn't too healthy. I'm not much on snacking on veggies but I brought baby carrots to work today with a little bit of dressing so we will see how that goes.

You may want to check Pinterest for some avocado recipes. Lots of folks here find lots of good recipes there. :goodvibes

I'm a blueberry fan - I used to pick them off the bushes at my grandparents house, and I can easily eat pints of them - my favorite way is with a little bit of whipped cream - simple and yummy.

And I agree with the tomato!!! I'm a born and bred Jersey girl, and there is nothing like picking up a bunch off the side of the road at a farmers stand - so good with salt and pepper - I can eat them like apples!

Lots of berry and tomato fans here so you are in good company! ::yes::

Lunch today you ask???? Taco salad (leftovers from yesterday) and an apple. Breakfast was an eggwhite and veggie sandwich on a low carb pita [did some package reading today and discovered that a Joseph's flaxseed pita is half the carbs of a Joseph's flax seed "sandwich thin" style roll (4 gr vs 8 gr)]. It is also less calories, so since I enjoy them both equally, I'll be sticking with the pitas most of the time now. Every calorie and carb counts, right??::yes::

Sounds like you are all set for the week, Pamela! :cool1: Isn't it annoying when you find something you were eating wasn't as healthy as you thought? :sad2: It is a good reminder to keep reading those labels as they are always "new and improving" things and it may or may not be an improvement for you.

Newbie here for my first WISH Away challenge :)

We leave for WDW in 12 weeks so I just want to get more active. My goals for this month are to hit my 10,000 steps everyday on my FitBit...week days are fine because I can take a couple laps around the building on my breaks and lunch but I have a hard time getting even halfway there on weekends. And I have absolutely NO excuse for that! I am also doing a 6 month DietBet and today I just won my first 4 week DB. Looking forward to some spending money for our DCL cruise in January after my DietBet10 ends in November!

In the summer I love watermelon and tomatoes! My step-dad has an amazing garden so he keeps me stocked but due to the nasty winter we had, he is very late getting things going. He is only planting 150 tomato plants instead of his usual 250 :D

Wowza that is a lot of tomatoes! :lmao: :welcome:

I am new to the W.I.S.H. challanges but I am trying to get in better shape not only for my Disney trip in September (woohoo!!:cheer2:) but also just in general. I am doing an ab challange with a few friends of mine this month, I am on day 3 of no soda (wayyyyyy harder then I thought it would be but I am taking it day by day!) and I am just trying to be more active. I have a few really fun things planned for the summer that also involve being active which will be great. I have started wearing a pedomiter to track my steps to see where I have to go and to track myself getting there! I am excited! I have a low goal of 10 pounds lost this month just to get started this month and I am sure that once I succeed I will give myself a more difficult goals in the future to finally get to my goal weight, which sadly is very, very far away.

Just trying to take it one day at a time!!
~Shelly
:flower3:

:welcome: I'm doing an ab challenge this month, too, and let me just say I am happy tomorrow is a rest day. ;)

BRB as the smilie police are after me. ;)

I think that my favorite summer fruit has to be strawberries. My favorite summer vegetable is tomato.

Another berry and tomato fan! :cool2:

Oh my just one.. ok Watermelon is my fave (strawberries are a very close second) however my type 2 diabetes doesn't really allow for fruit.. :(:(

My fave summer veggie -- cukes right off the vine with salt! :thumbsup2
Zucchini is a close second - scoop out the seeds and maybe a bit of the inside flesh and saute that up with a bit of garlic, red pepper flakes and some cooked ground sauage - like Jimmy Dean's mild - stuff it back into the hollowed out Zucchini and top with 1T of spaghetti sauce and some shredded cheese (any kind works but I like mozzarella or parm the best) and bake for 20 - 30 mins till tender.. MMMMM I could eat this every night! :yay::yay:

That's sounds yummy and very healthy too! ::yes::

Berries, berries, berries! I pile a few different kinds in a bowl with a little Stevia sprinkled on top - it tastes so wonderful! It feels like a much bigger treat than it is.

For veggies, I love corn on the cob and fresh shelled peas. My mom used to grow peas when I was a kid, and my sister and I had to shell them. We'd end up eating half of what we shelled! :)

XO
Liz

Sounds delish and I'm sure you burned a few calories shelling those peas! ;)

My goal for the month... to keep the momentum of weight-loss success I've had for the past couple weeks.

After steadily gaining from August to May and achieving a new all-time high weight for myself, I recently discovered Plexus products and they have REALLY gotten me back on track. I also signed up as a Plexus Ambassador so, it's also rather motivating to know that I stand the chance of making more money based on how well I succeed in improving my own health. (**I will not be peddling products or recruiting ambassadors here on the DIS but, if you're interested in more info, please PM me or click the link in my signature.)

As far as making best use of the summer, I am LOVING the outdoor projects that I've thrown myself into the past couple weekends. I can't wait to get back out there. Well, as soon as this stinkin' sunburn heals, anyway. Boy, was I stupid this past Saturday... wearing a tank for the first time this season and not using sunblock on my back and shoulders. ouch. ouch. ouch.

You have been on a roll, Connie! :cool2: Sorry about the sunburn.

In for June as well! Excited to be really tracking what I am doing for the next month as I have seen some good progress in the last 2 weeks.

My goal for June is to keep track if my weight each week even if I get off plan and hold myself accountable. It is also to actually meet my goal for the month for the first time.

As for fruits and veggies, I love them all! But hands down favorite fruit are cherries! Veggies are anything I can put in a salad, especially tomatoes. I love caprese salad especially.

Good luck to all this month and thank you to our awesome coaches and hostess!

Kudos to you on your good progress. A caprese salad is very delish! :cool2:

Hello. New here. I'm hoping to lose at least another 30 lb before our wdw trip mid - December. I have lost 15 since 4/1. I have a lot of physical issues that make exercise (and many days even cooking) extra tough, but I have good motivation now, with the trip coming up. Anyway, I will read back on your posts in the morning, just wanted to say hi. :)

:welcome: This is a great place for accountability and support!

We are growing our own greens this spring and will probably be ready for a big harvest tomorrow, so I anticipate FRESH SALAD with our dinner tomorrow! I haven't had much success with my gardening in the past few years (since we moved our garden location), so it is exciting to see so many lovely organic greens thriving here!

Homegrown salad -- yum! :cool2: We haven't had much gardening success since we moved about 300 feet higher than we were before. Apparently that was enough to make a difference. :confused3

I know I have only been on this challange since Sunday but I am still so motiviated! (ps excuse my spelling, I am terrible at it and I can't get this spell checker to work!)

Congratulations on your strong start! It's perfectly fine to take things in baby steps so you don't get overwhelmed and frustrated. You can do it!

I'm having a good week so far myself -- I just hope that the trend continues. Nothing like a new month to give us all some new motivation! ::yes::

I also really love being able to use basil and chives from the garden for cooking this time of year. :cool2:

I love my chives because they come back year after year! And surprisingly, I had PARSLEY come back from last year!

How goes the ab challenge? What is the toughest part?

I'm having a good week so far myself -- I just hope that the trend continues. Nothing like a new month to give us all some new motivation! ::yes::

WOOHOO on having a good start to the month!!

*********************

Morning went by very quickly!! Now I actually have a full hour for lunch, so plenty of time to prep for my WW meeting tonight, thank goodness!!

TTYL..........................P

I was going to have a resting day bc my back feels like it is going out. Well, at 11:25, my friend texted me to tell me she was there, and what booth she was in. Where, you ask? Oh, at the restaurant I was supposed to meet her in for lunch. It was 15 minutes away, and I got there by 11:50, including parking and walking in. Even remembered stuff for errands I had on the way home. I did a pretty good job choosing what to eat, but the portion was not good, so I started getting hungry after the first errand! Posting here to be accountable bc I am hungry and going to the grocery store, lol. Wish me luck!

Well, I made it. Posting that really did make a difference. I am super hungry now so I am going to go unload and then have an apple with almond butter. Go me! Btw, there was quite a bit more time in between those posts than it shows. It randomly posted the double post, so I just edited it to this one, lol

Kind of skimming along. :)

Still haven't set a goal for the month, but I am doing ok with the dairy free (gf). But not so much with the coke...But I am ok with that, because dealing with the gf/df is a bigger deal at the moment. :)

Does everyone know the trick for ripening peaches/nectarines? (Did someone else already post this?)

Put them in a brown paper lunch bag (make sure they are completely dry) and set on the counter in an out of the way place. Check every day. They usually ripen up in a day or so. You can then stick them in the fridge if you don't have time to eat right away. The brown paper bag aids in ripening and the fridge retards ripening. :)

It doesn't really help bad peaches (the hard as rock almost green ones) taste better, but it does help with the ones that are just not quite there yet.

Hi everyone! Sorry for failing to post a question of the day yesterday. But I was busy at work in the morning and then later on I had an enormous headache, went back home early and just lounged around in bed.

I am having trouble getting back into good habits. I start out good every morning with a healthy breakfast, but then at lunch or in the afternoon it gets bad. At least I did not have any sugar/candy just yet. I seem to have indulged too much in sweet things during my vacation that now I am really craving them. Hopefully today I will be finally able to break that habit!

And this inspired me for the following question of the day:

What do you think is your worst unhealthy habit and have you taken any steps to change that yet?

To be honest, I think my worst habit is to eat too quickly and often mindlessly. I have been trying to improve that and since my boyfriend is a very slow eater, tried to work on it during our vacation together quite a bit. But then I was busy chatting and quickly I feel back into old patterns. But I just keep training! Try to put down my cuttlery between bites (I always tend to put the next bite on to my fork while I am still chewing and I try to not do that anymore, but old habits die hard!!).

Well done!!! :thumbsup2

QotD : worst habit is feeling like I need to eat like my family who doesn't have diabetes - I try to make meals that can include things for me like chicken tenders for the guys and then grilled/baked/sauteed unbreaded chicken for me.. it works for the most part if I am diligent .. Hope everyone has a great Wednesday.. I'll be back at Lunch if I get time today :thumbsup2

I love my chives because they come back year after year! And surprisingly, I had PARSLEY come back from last year!

Wow that is amazing that the parsley came back! :cool2: Our chives are in a pot and about 15 years old.

The hardest thing about the ab challenge is the plank but it is all hard really. That's why I'm so happy today is a rest day! ;)

Good job having a healthy snack to fend off the hunger! :thumbsup2

Thanks for the ripening tip, Rose! I knew you could do that with bananas but I had not heard of it for other fruit. :cool2:

That is a lot having another food group out of the eating plan so hang in there -- you can only do what you can do. :flower3:

For me it is strawberries or watermelon, and avocado or brussel sprouts.

Another berry lover! :thumbsup2

Well done!!! :thumbsup2

No worries on the QOTD, Magdalene! :flower3: That is the nice thing about the summer challenges -- they are a bit more laid back. :beach:

There is a WW routine about putting your fork down and taking a sip of water between bites -- have you tried that? It is hard to break habits that we've had for a long time but I know you can do it! :thumbsup2 One of my WW has a little saying about mindless eating "don't put food in your mouth when there is already food there."

My worst unhealthy habit is wanting to eat too much between when I get home and when I have dinner. It is a long standing habit from when my folks would have happy hour and snacks and then dinner. My solution is to not eat after 5 p.m. so I have dinner early instead of snacking and then having dinner. It seems to be working so far. :goodvibes

Happy National Running Day to those of you who are runners! :yay:

I have tried that trick with the peaches and it really does work. But you are right, lousy peaches are going to be lousy no matter what... but if they just need a bit of ripening, the bag trick works great!

Glad you are cutting yourself some slack with the Coke. Trying to change TOO MANY things at once is hard!! Baby steps!!

Hi everyone! Sorry for failing to post a question of the day yesterday. But I was busy at work in the morning and then later on I had an enormous headache, went back home early and just lounged around in bed.

NBD! We were just fine! Hope your head is better today.

I am having trouble getting back into good habits. I start out good every morning with a healthy breakfast, but then at lunch or in the afternoon it gets bad. At least I did not have any sugar/candy just yet. I seem to have indulged too much in sweet things during my vacation that now I am really craving them. Those darn carbs! They call to me so loudly after I have been overindulging!

And this inspired me for the following question of the day:

What do you think is your worst unhealthy habit and have you taken any steps to change that yet?

My worst habit.... evening snacking! I SWEAR I sometimes eat more calories in my evening snack than I do in my dinner! I try to let the cut off be 8:30, but sometimes I am snacking at 10pm! Even if I am staying within my daily PPV Target, I still should not be eating that much that late!! It is something I think I will probably struggle with forever, but I definitely keep trying!

To be honest, I think my worst habit is to eat too quickly and often mindlessly. I have been trying to improve that and since my boyfriend is a very slow eater, tried to work on it during our vacation together quite a bit. Try to put down my cuttlery between bites (I always tend to put the next bite on to my fork while I am still chewing and I try to not do that anymore, but old habits die hard!!).

Just keep working on it!! It will become a GOOD HABIT eventually!!

QotD : worst habit is feeling like I need to eat like my family who doesn't have diabetes - I try to make meals that can include things for me like chicken tenders for the guys and then grilled/baked/sauteed unbreaded chicken for me.. it works for the most part if I am diligent .. Plus we snack at night - I sometimes fall off the wagon and eat a few bites of what everyone else is having - last night it was Coffee Oreo Ice Cream :scared1: ..

First of all, that ice cream sounds  !! Second.... I am constantly having to "modify" my meals for SOMEONE in the family. I often make a main dish that we all can eat, but modify/add/subtract a side dish for each of us. For example, I will change a recipe from chicken to lean pork loin so that we all can eat it. Then I might bread the portion for DS with regular crumbs and leave DH's unbreaded .... then top DS's and DH's portions with regular cheese and top my portion with lowfat cheese (which I have measured, of course ;) ). And then I might give DS a baked potato and steamed broccoli for a side, give DH and myself steamed broccoli, plus also add roasted carrots for myself (since my main portion is usually smaller than DH's).

It sounds like a lot of work, but it has become a fairly easy routine most night. But of course, I am ALWAYS searching for recipes that we can ALL eat, even if I have to modify the recipe somewhat!

It sounds like you have similar struggles and I just want to encourage you and tell you that it IS worth it and that it can work out!!Keep trying!

Hope everyone has a great Wednesday.. I'll be back at Lunch if I get time today :thumbsup2

Wow that is amazing that the parsley came back! :cool2: Our chives are in a pot and about 15 years old.

Our chives are in the flower beds and every year they appear somewhere new!

The hardest thing about the ab challenge is the plank but it is all hard really. That's why I'm so happy today is a rest day! ;)

I should get back to a plank a day.... soon!

There is a WW routine about putting your fork down and taking a sip of water between bites -- have you tried that? Happy National Running Day right back to you!!!:wave2:

************

Happy Wednesday all! At work today with just another minute to spare! Working as a one-on-one today with two kiddos (a.m. and then p.m.) and then home to start organizing the stuff for this weekend's robotics yard sale. Not many donations yet... fingers crossed that folks bring stuff at the end of the week!

DD is doing her first commute to Boston this afternoon for a belated orientation at the aquarium. It is a different bus stop than she will probably be using once she has a regular schedule, but at least it is only a 9 minute drive from campus (to this particular bus station)! I know it will be fine and she will do great, but of course, I'm having a "worried mom" moment over it.... especially since she has to catch the last bus back after the meeting and if she is late....:confused3 So hard to let go (again)!! But she sounds CONFIDENT and EXCITED so I can't ask for more than that!!

Off to grab my afternoon student!.........P

hello!! I'm here, I'm late, but I'm here. these summer days are flying by.....

I'm still trying to catch up to myself after my trip last month, traveling really puts me behind but I'm going keep going on trips that's for sure!! so I'm sitting here with my piles of mail and papers and thinking...I need to get on my June challenge sign up! unfortunately I'm up from May, and so my June goal was my May not fulfilled goal...but if I can get to July 4th and enter in this new decade which is my goal I will be sooooo thrilled!!!

my summer goal is to continue losing, and save the summer treat-cheats for real reasons, not just let's sit on the deck cop-out reasons. and modify my summer treats to be less caloric as much as possible with small small small itty bitty portions. I've got 25 lbs to lose and I really want it gone!

new summer treat that my daughter and I are really into --- flavoring our water with frush fruits and herbs. Pinterest is a great place for recipes. today we are having grapefruit, lemon, lime and mint...it's soooo good! I also love fresh summer fruits like melon and peaches, and summer veggies like zuchinni and squash on the grill.

I'm back on the workout wagon, I'm struggling with the MFP wagon, and back on my fitbit goal of 7k steps a day.

thanks Magdalene for hosting!! and :welcome: to our newcomers!!

Evening all! Finally home (had to run a quick errand after school) and time to get dinner on the stove! Then time to get busy with the yard sale JUNK!

Not sure if I will pop on again this evening or not, so I'll say g'night for now! Just about 36 more hours until our first weigh-in for June.... are you feeling ready?? ......................P

Boy, I have NOT felt right today. Practically like I was drugged. I even sent dh a semi-coherent text this morning, lol. I did rest a bit earlier, and when I got up I made myself some eggs. I am on a fairly strict diet which is like paleo but even more restrictive. It seems to help not only with weight loss, but also my pain level, so I am trying to stick with it. Every 4th day I get one "normal" meal, so I can still have things. I don't know that I intend to be very strict about it at wdw, but I have months to think about that.

I have eaten on plan today, and have a decent dinner planned for the evening (marinated steak, yellow rice (which I won't eat), and braised cabbage), so I should be ok.

Hello!! I have a lot of health issues and medications that make losing weight a bear at times between side effects and lack of energy etc... We can support each other!! :)

Hey just chiming in to say that you both are in good company ...... me :teeth:

QOTD for Monday:

What is your favourite summer fruit and summer vegetable? If you have a recipe to go with your answer we would all love to read it!

Tomatoes also make for one of my standard dinner recipes: Chop up some tomatoes (about 6 to 7 for one person) into cubes. Gently fry a clove of garlic (chopped or put through a crusher) in one or two teaspoons of olive oil, then add the tomatoes. Let it bubble for a while and then season with salt, black pepper and lots of fresh basil (finely chopped). Serve with wholewheat pasta and if you want one tablespoon of grated parmesan cheese.

My favorite summer fruit is berries. I love fresh picked strawberries and blueberries! I'd say my favorite summer veggie is green peppers. They are so much better tasting picked fresh than from the grocery store!

Thanks for the recipe...I think I'll make this sometime soon.

What do you think is your worst unhealthy habit and have you taken any steps to change that yet?

My worst unhealthy habit is definitely drinking diet soda. I have tried to stop and did for awhile. But, I caved. I have been feeling yucky the last couple days and told DH that I have to stop drinking it and find out if that is what is bothering my tummy.

Okay...I know I've mentioned it before, but today was my last full day of the school year! We go tomorrow from 8:00-11:30 then summer vacation starts! Many of you know that I teach for an alternative ed program for disruptive youth and it can be very trying. I've had some very rough times with very rough kids, but, this year was overall pretty good. I've had my share of problems, but I feel very positive about most of the students I have. I just hope they stay out of trouble this summer and I don't read about them in the police reports!

Has anyone seen the movie Fed Up? It's only in select theaters and nowhere near me :( Anyhow, Katie Couric is a producer (I think) and it talks about sugar in our foods. There's a website and a 10 day sugar free challenge, but I haven't had a chance to get too into it. I am thinking when I get more information, that I will try it here at home. I'm sure my kids will have breakdowns over the lack of "good food" :rotfl: and "starve to death" ;) but I am hoping to try it and see how it goes. If anyone has anything to share about it, please do!

I am off to finish watching a movie that I fell asleep during last night, so have a great night and I'll check in tomorrow.

Drive-by post... I've read a bit on my phone today but never had enough time to reply to anything.

Doing well with eating but missed the gym the past few days because of work meetings that keep running over. Got out and walked the neighborhood in the evenings though. I have met my "Breeze" step goals every day for 30 days now.

Looking forward to taking a half day off tomorrow and Friday. Attending my daughter's end of school party at school tomorrow and then her last day is Friday and they release at noon. The three of us are gonna drive down to Austin and play for the rest of the day.

Y'all have a great evening! :-)

Morning all! This is just a fly-by for now! I'm off to work again and not sure about my computer access. I'll pop on if I can! Otherwise I'll try to be back after school for at least a few minutes! Robotics yard sale is day after tomorrow, so I need to be sorting and pricing tonight!
