And I won't look back
I can go the distance
And I'll stay on track
No I won't accept defeat
It's an uphill slope
But I won't lose hope
Till I go the distance
And my journey is complete
But to look beyond the glory is the hardest part
For a hero's strength is measured by his heart.

For motivational Monday I thought we would talk a bit about motivating ourselves to get our workouts in even though it is still dark, and cold, and we just don't want to! (With a little help from my friends at sparkpeople.com of course)

They took a survey of their members and asked how they would answer this question.

"When I don't feel like working out, I ___."

Here are some of their answers:

Do it anyway.
Tell myself to go for 15 minutes. If I still feel bad or unmotivated, I can quit. I have yet to quit.
Look on Pinterest for motivation! (Check out Pinterest's Fitness section and follow SparkPeople's Pinterest boards.)
Ask a friend along to the workout it helps us both with accountability.
Do a heavy house cleaning (vacuuming, moving furniture, scrubbing) so I have a reason to work out.
Watch a Crossfit video on YouTube. It always inspires me. Then I get it done.
Take a 10-minute brisk walk.
Take the dog for a long walk.

Here is a link to the whole article from sparkpeople.com with more ideas if you are interested

QOTD Monday, February 10, 2014: How do you answer this question? "When I don't feel like working out, I ___."

BBL with replies and my own answer.

Ha! I am not that high on being motivated right now!! I really did not want to go for a run on Friday, but then decided that at least I should do 15 minutes. Well, now I wont be running for some time... Grmpf!

But on the other hand I am feeling much better today - after the initial shock and pain the wound appears to be healing ok. The doctor looked at it today and was not shocked by it and so far the bursa is not acting up either. So hopefully I will be moving more again soon. But since I am feeling better I decided that I need to figure out a few things that I can do without using the knee. I think I need to do a few back exercises, all this sitting withe the leg up really is starting to annoy my back. So I guess my idea about how to get motivated: Try to be creative to find something that fits within your limitations!

Morning all! Sorry I didn't get a chance to pop on yesterday. My "little" head cold was making me feel icky, so I gave myself the day off from nearly EVERYTHING! I sat on my butt and scrolled on the computer and watched dumb TV shows.... all day! I didn't even make a real meal! The men got leftovers for lunch and dinner was at robotics. Still slept okay last night, despite being a lazy a** yesterday and despite the congestion. Begged off of work today, but will probably work T-Th. Friday I go pick up DD at school for a long weekend at home! :thumbsup2

Feeling better today, so I guess I need to be super productive, to make up for yesterday! TTYL..................P

Morning, all!

Woke up sick today :( I guess my body just can't adjust to the ever changing weather in my apartment. I decided to sleep in instead of doing my workout, and I'm glad I did because I feel MUCH better. This way, when I get home from work, I can workout, rather than trying to plow through it this morning with little results.

Yesterday was my niece's birthday party. It was difficult to eat there, as my niece is 13, and all she wants to eat is pasta or macaroni and cheese... so all my sister made to eat was pasta and macaroni and cheese LOL h, and breadsticks from Olive Garden :rotfl:

Great for my niece, but kinda upsetting for the rest of us. Nevertheless, my sister is on Weight Watchers now, and she knew I was too, so she wrote down the points for everything for me so I could stay on track - she also made a large salad for those who wanted it, so I filled up that, too. I thoroughly enjoyed my breadstick from Olive Garden, knowing that it was 4 points, because I had limited my portions of other things!

People were so interested in the points thing, that we actually inspired my cousin and his girlfriend to start on Weight Watchers, too! Though, I think that might be because there could be a wedding in their future and they want to look good for that... Part of me hopes that is the case, but after him, I'm the last remaining member of the family who isn't gotten married (who's over the age of 21), so allll the pressure will be back on me. :scared1:

Today is Clean Out your Computer day! Time to delete all those files from long ago! Or, you know, back them up!

Tomorrow is Don't Cry over Spilled Milk Day! Perfect for WISH, its a day to accept that we can't control everything, and to keep on keepin' on even if everything hits the fan! It is also Make a new friend day!

My favorite apps are My Fitness Pal, Run Keeper, Jeff Galloway 5k, an interval timer, my podcasts, and music. I am going too look for a meditation app tonight, too :thumbsup2

Jeff Galloway has an app?! Totally using that when I start running again! The last time I did it, my friends thought I was crazy for trying to do a 5k with walking breaks, but to this day, I've never had a injury from running, and several of them have! So there! =P

How did you like the opening ceremonies? We thought it was very well done. Although, DH thinks the USA sweaters look like ugly Christmas sweater...and I agree!

Totally agree about the USA sweaters! Honestly, this year, all the country costumes reminded me of Epcot - everything seemed very old fashioned haha The ceremonies were strange to me. Apparently Russia spent as much money as ALL of the winter games in the past COMBINED - and I was slightly disappointed with what they came up with.

Maybe it is that I used to work in technical theater. When that fifth snowflake didn't open up, I was nearly having heart palpitations haha Someone's getting fired!
t caved today and it was sooooo yummy. Now I need to regroup so I don't continue on the splurges!

I'm a little late to the party, but I'd like to join in if that's ok.

:welcome: Glad to have you! What's the one-one-one diet?

Glad you've been inspired to step outside your comfort zone. I bet you'll be pleasantly surprised at how nice those folks are. Let us know how it went!

Thanks! They were nice! It's very hard to meet people my age because everyone else is meeting people at bars and through friends and such, and since I don't really know anyone in NY anymore, and bars aren't really my scene, its tricky.

But, I had a good time! I was happy I went! I told myself that I'm going to go to at least one meet up a week, just to get in the habit of meeting new people and not being embarrassed or afraid!

Can't believe I lost 7 pounds this week. I'm so proud of me.

WAY TO GO!!!! :woohoo: 7 pounds is a big loss, even for the beginning! And good luck to you and your husband with chemo. Baking can be really good to relieve stress - but maybe bake a healthy bunch, so that you can indulge, too?

QOTD Monday, February 10, 2014: How do you answer this question? "When I don't feel like working out, I ___."

What a great question for me today! Usually, the answer is that I remember how nice it is just to come home, and not have to worry about working out or doing much of anything. But, I usually do the 10 minute method. I'll do it for 10 minutes and if I'm still feeling awful, I'll stop, and do the rest another time. More often than not, I stop watching the clock long before 10 minutes and before I know it, my workout is done haha

Today, I knew I wasn't going to last the 10 minutes, so I went back to bed, and set reminders for myself to workout when I got home.

My "little" head cold was making me feel icky, so I gave myself the day off from nearly EVERYTHING!

Sorry you aren't feeling well! Seems to be that time of the year! Glad you are better - but also glad that you got a day off from all the things you normally do! We all need a refresher every now and then! :)

We are updated! Congrats to all our losers and out maintainer, and for those of use struggling a bit, we can do this :thumbsup2 Everyone is doing a great job!

Thanks for hostessing and keeping track of all of us! :flower3:

Can't believe I lost 7 pounds this week. I'm so proud of me. Just hope I can stick it out. I always see relatively big numbers in the beginning since I have so much to lose (goal is to lose 97 pounds total and I am 20 into it for this round), but I betcha once I get down to the last 30 or so it'll be agony for each ounce I kick to the curb.

:woohoo: Awesome, awesome loss this week, Kachina! One pound at a time -- you can do it! :thumbsup2

QOTD Monday, February 10, 2014: How do you answer this question? "When I don't feel like working out, I ___."

I do it anyway -- that is the nice thing about keeping a race on the calendar. :goodvibes

So I guess my idea about how to get motivated: Try to be creative to find something that fits within your limitations!

Glad that you are feeling better, Magdalene. Sorry that your activity is going to be curtailed for a bit. :flower3: The important thing now is to heal.

pixiedust: for a speedy recovery for you, Pamela!

Woke up sick today :( I guess my body just can't adjust to the ever changing weather in my apartment. I decided to sleep in instead of doing my workout, and I'm glad I did because I feel MUCH better. This way, when I get home from work, I can workout, rather than trying to plow through it this morning with little results.

pixiedust: for a speedy recovery for you, too, WOFTD!

Apparently I should have posted this article about self care for sick days today.

http://www.sparkpeople.com/resource/nutrition_articles.asp?id=736

This is the time to rest and take care of yourselves -- that is part of a healthy lifestyle, too. :hippie:

 hello everyone!! can I pop in and try to catch up a little :teeth:

I just returned home last night from my week in FL, 2 days at WDW (AK and DHS) and then 3 nights visiting my folks in their condo for the winter. and I say 'visitiing' b/c the weather in Tampa was not friendly at all...55 and rainy. much better than weather back home, but disappointing for the 2 days I had there.

i need to take a couple days to recover from the trip..then jump back on the wagon and get serious to lose! i feel like I've regained some weight over the past week and do not look forward to stepping on the scale

WDW was much more crowded than i anticipated for the first week of Feb -- LOTS of travel groups. the wait times were tolerable but getting from here to there felt like near peak crowds!

I have been sick all weekend long so breathing has been very hard. I did shovel snow for 30 min on Saturday - thought I was going to pass out. I will probably take it easy today and not do too much. Tomorrow I have an appointment with a trainer so hopefully I will be a little better.

QOTD: Once I start moving then I physc myself into doing more. I am wierd but if the treadmill has like 1.60 miles listed then I push for an even 2 miles as I hate uneven numbers. :lmao: Or if I am outside walking I will tell myself just one more street, then I finish that street and be like ok one more, then before I realize it I have almost completed a route and I just push myself to finish it. The last trick is if a good song comes on I will keep going so I can hear the full song.

I hope everyone that is feeling under the weather gets better soon.

:welcome: Glad to have you! What's the one-one-one diet?

The idea of the 1-1-1 diet is you eat 1 protein, 1 carb, and 1 fat at each meal and snack. Meals are standard serving size and snacks are half servings. You eat 3 meals and 2 snacks each day. No counting involved! You don't have to focus on calories or calculate points, just make healthy decisions most of the time. Nothing is off limits. If I want a cookie, I can have it, but that's my carb for that meal or snack. You just have to choose what you want-the dinner rolls, the noodles, the mashed potatoes, the cocktail, the fruit, it's up to you to decide, but you can only choose 1. I don't feel deprived because I know I'm going to be eating again in a few hours and I can choose something else next time! Non-starchy veggies are free. So easy, I love it! I can't possibly over eat or eat too many carbs, but I don't feel too restricted either.

QOTD Saturday, February 8th and Sunday, February 9th, 2014: What is your favorite way to reduce stress? Or if you are still working on that is there one of these ideas that you would like to try?
Well the Dr. Wayne Dyer thing really helps me with people related stress--look in the mirror every day and say I'm not going to allow anyone to upset me today. It works pretty good. Plus I'm still on the prozac so that mellows me out quite a bit. I really need to get off it but at this point I feel it's doing me more good than harm so...

When I don't feel like working out I relax, take time to do stuff I don't do because I'm always working out and working.
I know not the answer they want but honestly I work out all the time. I don't ever not want to work out, I love it.
Am up a little so far this week but the pool's been closed so no working out. Just did one long walk Thursday when I called in to work and that was great but the rest of the time has been too icy to walk or I've been at work, get home for dinner then tv's been new so no walks.
Am gonna go work out today though! I chipped my windshield scraping it Saturday so I have to go get a new one tomorrow. Honestly I have so much strength I'm just not used to having--I have to keep this in mind before I break other stuff lol. The truck was covered in a thick layer of ice and I had the defrost running while I scraped the sides and the back when I got to the front I didn't realize how much the thing had already defrosted I think and just went at it. I still love snow!
Some pics of the tanks I found Thursday on my walk:

QOTD Monday, February 10, 2014: How do you answer this question? "When I don't feel like working out, I ___." BBL with replies and my own answer.

Not wanting to work out hasn't been too bad of a problem recently. Except for when the weather has been bad (but hey can you really blame a girl for not wanting to go out when its negative something out and the ground is frozen over with snow because no one plows our complex?). But the fact I'm going for my best time in a 10k in quiet a while and my Zombies Run! app have been a huge motivator to get my butt out the door in cold weather.

Started liquids today. This is going to be a bit more of a challenge than I thought. Not because of cravings for solid food (I tried to get everything out of my system before today and apparently still missed a couple of things), which I am having a bit of. But because of hunger levels. I am getting hungry about every two hours even with me drinking then. And I am not talking little hungry, I am talking stomach growling really hungry hunger. Its not like the protein drinks are lacking in protein, they have 30 grams. Just hoping this becomes less of a problem the further in I get and the closer to surgery date I get. Thankfully allowed a single protein bar a day so I'm hoping that might help some. Might start drinking more water also to see if more water helps with the problem.

I kind of wish the surgery was sooner than two weeks right now. Because being on all liquids will be less of a problem when I have a smaller stomach.

What's going to be really fun is tomorrow when I go for my first run on liquids. I might end up eating my protein bar before that run just so I have a bit more sustenance because I am probably going to burn through everything that's in my stomach pretty quickly on that 4 miler.

Hello eveyone, Happy Tuesday.. Thanks Lisa for coaching last week! My name is Michelle and I'll be coaching thru Saturday..

I've been fighting a headcold/flu type thing since friday and stayed out of work till today.. I feel unprepared for coaching but I do have a question today!

when you are sick how do you stay on track - or do you just eat whatever and get back at it when you are feeling better?? I'll be back at my lunchtime to chat ..

Your question is very timely for me!

I do tend to gravitate towards comfort foods when I am sick - or right now when I am injured. At the same time I know it is not good. I try to pick treats that are less unhealthy than others. But I often feel that when my body is fighting something, I have huge problems to bring up the self discipline to eat responsibly.

Unfortunately, eating healthy is not something that comes to me naturally. Today I stepped on the scale and it moved upwards again. I am so ashamed at the number I am seeing and I know that the only one to blame is myself...

I go at least a mile. :) Sometimes that's all I have in me, but that's ok. I am at 1year, 1month and 10 days of going at least one mile.

Thanks for coaching Lisa!

I keep moving and go at least a mile. :) haha. I have been lucky in that I haven't been too sick other than very minor stuff in a while. But I am a comfort eater when I don't feel well (hence last night's dinner since I still have a gluten stomach). I did walk through a couple of injuries last year that I probably shouldn't have, but it all worked out in the end.

****
I can barely see the wagon in the distance, but I know it is still there. :goodvibes Hope everyone is doing well. Really, really looking forward to our trip to warmer temps in a couple of weeks.:goodvibes

Molli--we made 7 trips last year to wdw (a lot of long weekends, which is how I got through menopause by the way:thumbsup2) and other than marathon weekend and when we went before Memorial Day, I don't think there was a slow time. It has been feeling more and more crowded to me every time. Which I guess is good for WDW. Mike and I were talking about this last night. For frequent travelers it's the extras that make the trip (like Push the trashcan who had his last day over the weekend) and it seems like more and more of the extras are disappearing. Anyhow, sorry the weather was not better. Hope you are feeling back on track soon!

Magdalene--sorry about the injury! I get the shame thing, but it is such a destructive emotion. Hang in there! You can do this and you have done it before! Baby steps. Be kind to yourself. Sending you a hug!

Pamela--thanks for offering to boycott Dannon. I definitely am done with them. I did some more reading and they are adding gf symbols to things that are gf, BUT the frustration with the whole thing is that unless you google every single company to know what their policy is (and then manage to remember said policy), you don't know how to tell going into a store if something is safe. On their website they list what isn't gf so honestly, how hard would that be to put on a label, especially one with ambiguous ingredients. Anyhow, rookie mistake on my part. Someday I will learn!:)

Have a great day!

Morning all! Sorry I didn't get on here again yesterday..... feeling a bit sluggish and a bit down (about my weight) to be very honest here. I know what NEEDS to be done.... I need to get my butt MOVING! It isn't a food thing for me... it is a lack of exercise. I have to do my monthly weigh-in for work today (I missed January and got a "slap on the wrist" email yesterday) and I KNOW, for the first time, I will be above my goal and will end up being "watched" and that totally bums me out. Not because the job is so wonderful and not because I make so much money :rolleyes2 but because it feels like a personal failure.

Also, every time I've weighed in for work, it has been an early morning/pre-breakfast weigh-in in shorts, etc. I really couldn't be bothered to drag myself out early this morning to drive 30+ minutes each way for a weigh-in that would be over my limit anyhow, so I'm going to weigh-in at my own meeting tonight..... so instead of being up 3 pounds over my limit, it will probably look more like 10! That won't panic me terribly, as I know why (later in the day, fully dressed, etc), but I'm sure it will look bad to my boss. :(

And so what do I do about it? Do I hop on the TM first thing and try to burn off every extra calorie possible? NOPE.... I sit my sorry a** here on the computer, eat my (on plan) breakfast and have a pity party. A big sarcastic WTG and bravo to me for being a weinie.

Wow.... how whiny am I this morning!? Sorry about that.... just needed to vent. Now back to your regularly scheduled programming!

Off to do laundry and make beds.............P

thanks I did rest for part of the weekend but then I didn't rest enough so I had to call out of work yesterday but oh well it's ok they don't mind..

P --   I'll say it again we are only human and it's ok to fall down long as you get right back up again.. Please don't beat up on yourself. we are always here to listen! take care . hope your afternoon is better..

Aww, Pamela, I'm so sorry that you are down. That bug must have really done a number on you. :flower3: It's okay to feel sad and discouraged at times -- it happens to all of us. I hope that you can kick that bug to the corner and get to feeling more like yourself very, very soon. Maybe a pjlla plan is in order? You can do it! :cheer2::cheer2::cheer2:

Hello eveyone, Happy Tuesday.. Thanks Lisa for coaching last week! My name is Michelle and I'll be coaching thru Saturday.. I've been fighting a headcold/flu type thing since friday and stayed out of work till today.. I feel unprepared for coaching but I do have a question today! when you are sick how do you stay on track - or do you just eat whatever and get back at it when you are feeling better?? I'll be back at my lunchtime to chat ..
Whether or not I stay on track really depends on whether or not if I have someone with me to help when I'm getting better I tend to eat better. Otherwise it tends to be what is most convenient. If I even feel like eating. Sometimes I don't.

And to lisha071. Yeah I'm allowed to have soups. I just didn't think to have any the first day! The main problem is getting some because after having jaw surgery as a teenager I can only take chicken broth and beeth broth in limited quantities. Not allergic to them. Just got really tired of them when I was recovering from surgery and I was only allowed certain types of food in the hospital.

Thanks for the encouragement! It really helped. So far I had a healthy dinner and while I would love something sweet right now, I think I will just get a large cup of tea and that will keep me occupied!

Hi everyone!

I'm on my own sick day here - is it possible that we're spreading germs via the internet?!?! :crazy2:

Nevertheless, I did get my workout in yesterday, but after my workout this morning, I knew I just needed to sleep. :(

I did have a great trip to the supermarket yesterday - I did not buy nutrigrain bars!!! I still have a few in the apartment just in case, but this morning I did cardio with a banana and a tiny bit of peanut butter, and then cereal with blueberries afterwards! Good thing my supermarket had blueberries in the winter haha

Hopefully it lasts!

Welcome back! Hope your vacation was awesome! The wagon is always here waiting for you! Stepping off for the mouse is always worth it! :)

This is the time to rest and take care of yourselves -- that is part of a healthy lifestyle, too. :hippie:

Thank you so much for this! Despite what I thought it would do, it actually made me work out. I felt like it was going to tell me to stop, but my symptoms were not serious enough to back off. In fact, my cardio yesterday actually made me feel better! Weight lifting this morning... not so much haha

I have been sick all weekend long so breathing has been very hard.

Feel better!

But the fact I'm going for my best time in a 10k in quiet a while and my Zombies Run! app have been a huge motivator to get my butt out the door in cold weather.

Good for you for setting such great goals! And oh man, Zombies Run is the scariest app I've ever used!

I've been fighting a headcold/flu type thing since friday and stayed out of work till today.. I feel unprepared for coaching but I do have a question today!

Hi Michelle! Thanks so much for hosting when you are sick! For me, I usually eat WAY less when I'm sick, as I'm sleeping much more, which makes me less hungry. I also gravitate more towards soups which are actually much healthier for me to eat lol But, exercise usually falls by the wayside. Honestly, though, this time of year, I'm usually sick a LOT. With all this exercise and eating better, I'm amazed at how little I've been sick!

Unfortunately, eating healthy is not something that comes to me naturally. Today I stepped on the scale and it moved upwards again. I am so ashamed at the number I am seeing and I know that the only one to blame is myself...

Don't be ashamed! If you know where things went wrong this week, just take some steps to try and avoid it for next week. You can do this! And honestly, acknowledging that there is something you can do to fix it is incredibly brave! :cheer2:

I can barely see the wagon in the distance, but I know it is still there. :goodvibes Hope everyone is doing well. Really, really looking forward to our trip to warmer temps in a couple of weeks.:goodvibes

We'll always be here whenever you are ready! And I'm sure the warmer temps will be just what you need!

Pamela, I am so sorry that you are down. Yes, it is unlike you, but we can't be perfect all of the time! You are such a strong, amazing woman, who spends every day doing more than I could ever imagine. Taking a day off from being that wonderful is ALLOWED - and ENCOURAGED! Things will get easier when you feel better and you WILL recover. As Lisa said, you are known for your plans and your persistence. SO, we all know how capable you are.

:cheer2:
