Wisdom Tooth Removal

Just got back from the dentist and she's sending me to a oral surgeon to have a wisdom tooth removed because it has a cavity in it. Anyone had one done lately, how bad is it? I'm a terrible dental patient, I can't even have the X-ray pieces in my mouth with starting to gag. I'm not looking forward to this at all.

I was completely knocked out, so it wasn't bad at all. I was pretty swollen for a few days, but never really in a whole lot of pain. I never even used the pain killers they prescribed.

My son just had all 4 of his removed last week. He was pretty sore for about 5 days. The day of surgery he was sick to his stomach a few times, but that was probably more from the anesthetic than anything else. The doctor sent him home with Tylenol #3 but also said that he should take ibuprofen with it to help with the swelling. Eventually, he quit taking the Tylenol and just took the Motrin.

Ice for the first 24 hours and then moist heat afterwards - it REALLY makes a difference. Also, just in case, make sure you have lots of soft stuff to eat on hand - my big strapping boy thought he would be eating regular food by day 2 and he was still having warm pudding and oatmeal well into day 4.

You're only having 1 done so you should be fine - but I would still have necessary items on hand just in case you fell a little out of it for the first day. Good luck!

Went through it last Tuesday, with IV sedation....totally didn't know when it happened...the procedure itself was a total piece of cake. I followed all the rules about ice, etc. so I had no swelling. BUT now I have a dry socket and it is quite painful. I'm in every single risk group for dry sockets (female, taking oral contraceptives, over 30, lower tooth....)

This seems to be a 'hot' topic lately. ;)

I have a consultation with an oral surgeon on Saturday. My dentist wants 1 wisdom tooth removed before crowning the #2 tooth. Only problem is, #2 tooth BROKE earlier today. Now what do I do? Which comes first? Remove the wisdom tooth, fix the other tooth?!?! UGHHH!

As for the actual removal, you shouldn't have a problem at all. They WILL try to get you to remove more than one tho. "As long as you're under....."

Keep ME posted, please. This IS a 'hot' topic for me right now. :(

Have all four taken out at once and ask to be knocked out. It is the only sain thing to do. I would never had gone back for the other two as the Dr wanted me to do.

I've not had my wisdom teeth for some years, but I went under & got all four out in one go.

I'm the same with the bite wings for the x-rays.....I gag when they try to put them in my mouth too.:(

Yes, have all four taken out at once. That way you never have to do this again.

4 injections in my mouth and a pair of vice grips - out it popped :earseek:

Awake all the time ::yes:: - did it hurt no-way, but then i'm tough pirate:

Dont be too scared about it. Last year i went through the same thing. I was having alot of pain due to a cavity in one of my wisdom teeth that was too big to fill. The doctor suggested me getting them out and sent me to a oral surgeon. I had it down 2 wks before i went to disney. I remember i had it done on a thursday and had taken off that friday from work. The procedure did not hurt as much as i thought it was going to I was home by 10:00 and just took it easy. The doctor gave me viccodin but didnt even feel the pain to have to take it. The next day i was eatign soft foods...i lived on KFC mashed potatoes. Make sure to do the cold packs and the perscription rinse they have you start before sugery..it really helps!!! By Monday i was back in work..the worse part about the whole thing to me was the stitched..i couldnt open my mouth that much and my family had a hard time understanding me. Take it easy and good luck!

I did it this way as well, cheaper, and quicker. It did hurt afterwards though, but the Vicodin killed that.

Went under and had all four taken out. Ice...Ice...and more Ice...it hurt for about a week afterward. But I would go do it again, because my wisdom teeth were always infecting my gums at least twice a month.

Well you can look on the brite side...your tooth is not impacted!
It shouldn't be too bad at all, since it's already surfaced.
Good Luck!
My DS(17) has his out in July, the 4 of them and yes, they are impacted.:(

My DS wil be having his out in July. The bottom ones are sideways! He is having it done on a Friday and hopes to be back to work on Monday. I am buying the bags of frozen peas for his face. People I have talked to who have had it done or their kids have had it done say it isn't too bad with the IV sedation. Good luck to all!
