Hi all,

Last week I had an impacted wisdom tooth removed. I have stitches. Since I had it removed I’ve had pain on and off ranging from mild to somewhat severe. I’ve been taking Motrin and the antibiotics I was provided. I’ve been using ice and heat as well as salt water. It’s strange as the pain sometimes isn’t even where the tooth was removed (bottom left). It’s sometimes in my upper and lower jaw if that makes sense. Any advice is greatly appreciated as well as your experiences.

Thank you!

A former student of mine had hers removed recently. She had a bone shard left in there and had terrible pain for a couple months. She’s finally better now. I’d call the dentist on Monday.

I would put in a call to the dentist for advice. Sorry, I don’t have more than that, I’ve never had wisdom teeth out. How much and how often are you taking the motrin? You can also supplement with tylenol, using both as directed.

I know there is something called a dry socket to watch out for.

Thank you. I have been taking it since he removed the tooth last week. I have heard of dry socket and was a little concerned. I’ll definitely call tomorrow.

I see that you have already committed to calling the dentist tomorrow, but if you are having a lot pain I would call today. You shouldn't be having pain a week later. Is it a lower tooth? Dry sockets are more common in the lower teeth. It is very painful but not serious, the dentist can put in some medication that will ease the pain instantly. An infection is unlikely since you are taking an antibiotic. Sometimes a small sliver of bone will slough off in the days following an extraction as a PP mentioned but that is an easy fix as well.

Thank you. I believe he’s not in the office today, that’s why I said tomorrow. And yes, it’s a lower tooth.

Many (most?) health care providers have either an answering service or an emergency number you can call. It might be worth calling the dentist and seeing what the recording says.
This. Your dentist should see you if you are having pain. I am a retired dental assistant and we saw patients any time of day or night if they were having pain.

pain could be a sign of infection, I know you said you'd call so there's probably not much else you can do for today except go to an urgent care if the pain gets too severe.

Yes, as others mentioned, call today! Our daughter had dry sockets; we needed to call the dentist on the Sunday of Thanksgiving weekend! No issues at all from their perspective. (If I recall, saw several patients in that afternoon.)

Thank you all. I called and the recording said if you are having an emergency go to the nearest hospital, which thankfully I don’t feel like I need.

I have a feeling that might be what I have as well.

When nerves are inflamed I don't think it is that uncommon to feel pain in a different location than expected.

I have had that happen to me when dealing with tooth issues.

Tooth pain is the worst, I hope you get relief.

I am sorry you're going through this. I recently had terrible tooth pain, and it is the worst. I can't help with advice, my pain was cleared up with antibiotics, but I'm sending good healing vibes your way. I'm glad you're going to get in touch with the dentist soon, and I wish you could have gotten someone to talk to today.
