Wisdom tooth removal pain! Help!

have you ever heard of oil pulling?

If you haven’t, it is when you put oil (I use coconut oil) in you mouth and switch it around for about 20 minutes then spit it out in the garbage. You can look up the science behind it on line but I swear by it.

When I had my wisdom teeth pulled a few years ago, the dentist said not to put too much pressure in my mouth like sucking through a straw so I just let the oil sit in my mouth and kind of tilted my head to get the oil on the back of my gums where the teeth were removed.

The coconut oil is very soothing and has antibacterial properties that might give you a little relief until you can get a hold of your dentist.

Unless the extraction site is visibly open, assume infection, not dry socket. I recently had a horrible outcome from an extraction - even though the extraction site healed perfectly well, an infection formed (and eventually abscessed) on the bottom of my jawbone. It didn't take very long either - about 10 days from the time I knew something was wrong to the point where I was needing ultrasound, then a CT scan, then IV antibiotics and nerve pain meds. If your dentist takes a quick look and tells you everything is fine, push for an x-ray of the entire area and antibiotics. I'm so sorry - I can still vividly recall the extreme pain and I hate this is happening to you. :flower3:

Thank you! That sounds scary. I am on antibiotics currently. Yes, it’s definitely not fun. Do they know why yours got infected or sometimes they just do?

My extraction was due to a failed root canal and it's possible it had been low-grade infected for a while. I probably should have had a course of antibiotics automatically after the extraction. Why the abscess settled under my jaw instead of at the socket? I didn't ask and they didn't theorize. It was actually a doctor that finally helped me - not my dentist. Again, it's kind of a long story and I only even mention it because if it is an infection, wasting time trying alternate ideas for relief can have difficult consequences. Nothing but antibiotics will help and the pain can be awful, as our friend @BlueStarryHat can confirm. Take care of yourself - fast!

Hi all,

So the oral surgeon said it’s not infected and it’s not dry socket. He said the wisdom tooth was deep and it is still healing. He told me to use salt water and he prescribed me a steroid to help with inflammation and pain.
Glad there was nothing seriously wrong and hope you are getting some pain relief. Tooth pain is the worst. Hang in there!

Prayers by now you are feeling a ton better, Once Upon a Time and have a relaxing weekend. Wishing all of you kind Dis friends the same, of course, too. Sweet dreams, too to all :)

I apologize for being (way too) late to this conversation... but maybe this advice may still help, or help someone else... in terms of tooth/dental pain, there is a natural remedy in Clove Oil. Just dab some on your finger and rub it into the gum areas near the pain. It's natural, it's safe, there is no dosage (or overdose) concerns to worry about.
I stumbled on this year's ago early in my public health experience from an overseas patient. Long story short I tried to order 1 vial but they came in a case. Therefore I had on many extra bottles hand, and sometimes suggested to other customers as an option. Time after time these individuals returned to express how effective this was! Even when some of them absolutely hated the flavor, they still sang praises of its effectiveness, even better than orajel (benzocaine) and that it has helped even when OTC pain meds like tylenol, ibuprofen, aspirin, and naproxen dont do much. Even in the past month I've had 2 people try this and return to state how much they appreciated this and how effective they found it.
Also a plus, it is cheap. We sell a small bottle of it for about $1.25. We have to special order it in as it is not routinely stocked by a store, but usually can have in stock the next day if we run out. Hopefully this info may be helpful...
