Wine and Dine 2015

Someone else mentioned sweet potatoes for fuel... My question is... How do you carry a potato on a run??!?

Ha! Weird I know, but I love raw potatoes. As a kid I would snap up chunks while my grandma was chopping them for mashed potatoes. Maybe I should just carry a baggie with me! I bet mousekeeping wouldnt find potato shavings in my BC bathroom garbage to be strange at all.

I don't know, I would probably parboil them, salt and chop up and put in a ziplock bag. I've never done it, seems too dry for me to eat while running actually, maybe if I was a ultra runner I would eat them.

Potatoes are tough to carry during road races, but they're everywhere during trail runs and ultras. I live on them for all of my really long distance races.

They also sell soft silicone flasks that you can fill up with homemade fuel or just put all your gels in if you don't want to carry more than one packet and you're eating the same flavors the whole race. I looked into that earlier this year. This is one kind: http://hydrapak.com/technology/soft-flask-350-500-750/ You could probably fill them up with mashed potatoes instead of gel if you wanted to. :)

Absolutely. As Coach Charles use to say... "We are all an experiment of one." Find what works for you and stick with it. :)

I miss Charles.

People who run all day long need something else. One can eat only so many putty-bars in a lifetime. During most of my long runs I'll stick with Gatorade mixed to package instructions. During the race I'll drink the race supplied Powerade.

Interesting ... Our bodies will actually process them?! I thought your digestive system slowed down, or stopped digesting while running - it would process the sugar based things but nothing more substantial... but if trail and ultra runners are using them, that must not be accurate...

..I've been meaning to ask you-When you run 50 miles, do you run the whole time?

Thrive - The Vegan Nutrition Guide to Optimal Performance in Sports and Life by Brendan Brazier has a bunch of homemade recipes/alternatives to bars. The appendix in this book is fantastic for finding natural sources of vitamins and minerals. (one thing that is missing is a list of the 10 most common nutrient deficiencies of vegetarians, made my own) This isn't a suggestion to become a vegetarian. You're unique, just like everyone else.

Nice one :)

I miss him too. Awhile back I got slightly picked on here over the training plane I wanted to use for Goofy and he reached out to me over PM after it happened...he was very nice. :)

I have read many times in many places over the years that your digestive processes slow down, but apparently they only stop entirely if you allow your stomach to empty entirely. As long as there are solids for your digestive system to work on, it seems to chug along, though less efficiently, due to blood being directed to other places in the body.

It would make sense that simple sugars would be preferable in that scenario as they are more easily digested, but I have also read (and experienced first hand) that we can only consume so many simple sugars over a period of time before nausea becomes a problem. I don't need anything more complicated for a marathon, but I know that I would run into those nausea issues if I had to fuel through a 50 miler with only simple carbs.

His "hay is in the barn" post always made me feel more at ease. Not just for my first runDisney race, but for all of them.

That is the classic Coach Charles post. I use the "hay is in the barn" phrase frequently when talking with our local running group as we approach race day.

ETA: Oh, and, the RELENTLESS pursuit of forward momentum. :-)

Robert, who ran disneyrunning and his wife were killed by a car(truck?) crossing a street about 10 days before my one-and-done Goofy. I really hoped that Disney would make some recognition at the start presentation but nothing came.

I remember when these Disney races were a few thousand people. Local supermarkets donated bundt cakes and Disney couldn't give out 'handled' items. Under the refreshment tables were stacks of loaf-of-bread sized cakes. I requested a bundt cake and got one in its full-loaf glory.

I certainly don't. "Run when we can, walk when we must," is the motto my running spouse and I use whenever we do these crazy races. Depending on the course, even the winners end up having to walk some. The key is to keep moving forward however you can, especially in a race where there is a strict cut-off time.

There's no way I could possibly get through 50+ miles on sugar alone. My stomach would revolt after the first five hours. That's where salted potatoes, PB&J, pizza, orange slices, soup, and all kinds of other real food come in handy. Flat coke works wonders too. Gives you a nice boost of sugar and energy when gels and bloks are hard to stomach.

So am I right in reading that they chose the night of the pre-race taste to also be the first night of the Merry & bright Dessert Party and they have the same check-in location :rolleyes1 That's going to be....fun.

We'll my 10 mile run today was NOT good. My garmin lost location at 8.0 miles so I turned it off. It also was randomly pausing and restarting while I was running. So I did my intervals for 30 more minutes as I had been averaging around 15.00 mm.

I had been lazy about my maintenance runs, only did 1 of 4 in the past two weeks. Then last Saturday I was at WDW and didn't run at all. We did walk about 85-100 miles I over 5 days though and I have been up late every night since we got back Tuesday night. I have felt exhausted but didn't want to skip another run.

I'm hoping my bad run today was just a result of all that and I'll be able to get back on track?

Also during today's run was the first time I thought I was going to throw up, twice. I was eating 1/2 honey stinger waffle every 3 miles but after mile 6 I couldn't stomach the thought of eating any more. I was alternating water and powerade about every 2 miles, MAYBE 3 ounces tops each stop. It was about 60 degrees when I started and 78 when I finished. And all in the shade. So idk what was up with my stomach today.
