Wine and Dine 2015

Had a nice 6 mile run this morning with our 3.5/1 intervals. Best time yet with an average pace of 10:41. Woohoo! Our Galloway running group will be starting up soon and my DH and I will be leading a pace group again. I spoke with our group leader yesterday and she said we are going to mix some things up with intervals. Apparently Galloway is suggesting some changes to his normal interval suggestions. She said they involve shorter running and rest intervals. We ran last year doing 1.5/:30 and we did speed up a lot doing that. She was saying the other leaders she spoke to said all of them who had tried these shorter intervals had been able to improve their pace. So, we shall see what she ends up telling us about intervals this year. Since I know there are a lot of us who run intervals on here, I'll update you some on what she shares.

I would be very interested to see what intervals they suggest! Thanks!

Gisele, Congrats on the best time...10:41 is awesome! I just started running about a month and a half ago using run/walk intervals (honestly, after reading and being inspired by some other disers' trip reports including yours) and have just worked up to 1:1 intervals doing 3 miles a run. How long did it take you and Chris to work up to higher mileage and larger run/walk intervals?

Flying coast to coast, LAX to MCO, whats the general rule for booking flights ? I never flew before. Should I be booking now? Am I ok to wait a few more months? I would prefer non stop as well. Thanks in advance

You can use fare tracking sites like Kayak to show you the latest trend in airfare for a particular route. They will also let you sign up for email alerts so you don't have to check their site every day.

I had done some running before we started Galloway, so we were able to start out at a 2.5/1 pretty quickly. But, after a serious illness and several months off running, I had to build back up again. I'm a spreadsheet kinda girl, so I made myself a schedule on excel and just set up incremental increases in my intervals. So, I would run 1:1 for two-three weeks and then if I felt pretty comfortable doing that, I would push it up 30 seconds on the run. So, then 1.5:1 for another two-three weeks and so on. I tried to be easy on myself when I would first increase the run interval, so if I found I could only do that for the first mile of a three mile run, then that was okay and I'd drop back to 1:1 to finish the mileage. Then the next time I ran I'd try to go a bit further. Having a plan and a schedule to increase was really key for me because I'm a list maker/task completer person, so being able to check off that progress each time was a big motivator to get me to improve.

For distance, we followed some of Galloway's training plans when basically on the long run every 3 weeks or so, we'd just incrementally increase over the last long run. So, for example if long runs are on Saturday, we'd run this mileage on those Saturdays 4,4,5,4,4,7,4,4,9... using 4 as the base long run. That's pretty low mileage for training, but if the goal is to complete a half, it worked for us.

Good luck and just stay consistent and be sure you don't push too hard or too fast and end up injured. You'll be running faster and further before you know it!!

That is sooooo helpful Gisele! Thanks so much, now I have some direction. I don't do spreadsheets necessarily but I do like to have a plan...so I guess I kinda do spreadsheets in my head.

I just have to say that the TRs you have posted (as well as Ariel, DisYoda, Ann, Keels and others) have been so inspirational to me. I thought to be a runner you had to just run, non-stop. Now that I have read how many of you do your own thing and what works best for you, I feel like I can do this too! Thanks so much all of you!

I'm glad the TRs got you motivated. I know I love to read the running TRs as well. They definitely are inspiring. You absolutely can do this!!

I'm happy you enjoyed my TRs as well :) You can do this! Just make a plan even if its in your head and stick to it, at least that is what works for me.

I'm continuing to enjoy my running break - I will start back up with Couch to 5K in May, even being as slow as a snail.

My husband has changed the way he is training. He is now following this 80/20 method of runs where 80% of his runs are at 80% effort both physically, mentally & perceived effort (although he's still running 6 to 7.5 miles every 2 days) and then 20% will be at max speed. I've been encouraging him to try to do speedwork instead on an actual track. He's doing another 10K for an even better PoT on Memorial Day. I'll probably sign up for the 5K that is going on at the same time as we'll probably finish our events in the same amount of time at that point.

I'm sorry to hear you may not be able to run your June half. :(

Thanks. Even if I can run it, I'll probably have to treat it more like a training run than a race. I was right on course with my training, and then developed this...issue...with my foot. Still don't know what it is, but taking a week off didn't fix it, so now I'm in the "take 2-4 weeks off" phase. I can walk just fine, though. That was supposed to be my proof of time for W&D, but now I may need to scramble for a 10K to do before the cutoff date.

I guess it's good to get the injury out of the way now when there's still plenty of time before W&D.

That's a great way of looking at it. Luckily you can walk just fine! Hopefully you can find a 10K that will work for you once you heal.

Check Kayak to see what's available. Then, if the prices are still pretty high (they are for NY to MCO right now) you can plug your preferred flights into Yapta and monitor the prices that way. They will e-mail you an alert any time there is a price change (I believe they also have an app if that is your preference). I think about 3 months out is usually the "sweet spot" for domestic flights, but if you're particular about nonstop/time of arrival/airline you may want to book earlier.

Dreams do come true! This morning I was able to register my DH and I through a travel agent that I had been on a waitlist with. All booked for the Caribbean Beach Resort for Friday-Monday (not my favorite resort, but I will take what I can get)! Could not be any more excited. This will be our second Wine & Dine Half Marathon. :yay:

I wish I was doing as well with training as the rest of you. I was getting in a few miles but haven't been able to get out lately. I just have no desire to run in the heat and my allergies are killing me. EEEK. I need to stop making excuses and just get out.
