Wine and Dine 2015

Thank you everyone for all the advice. But now it doesn't matter. I've hurt my Achilles and can barely walk. :( :(
I've iced and now I have the heating pad on it while the ice pack is back in the freezer. I'm so upset! I've been crying all evening, not from pain, but from disappointment. My family doesn't understand why I'm so upset. Let it heal and run a different race, etc. But I was so excited, I'd trained and could run the distance at a good time. And now I will have to start all over again. :(

Sorry to be such a downer, but hopefully you guys will "get" my frustration.

Injuries are frustrating. I've been through knee injuries, ankle injuries, and plantar fasciitis. As others have said, you'll be surprised at how little you'll really lose while you're healing up. You won't be starting all over again, though be sure to ease back into your training so as not to re-injure yourself. Missing a race sucks, just try to stay positive and know that you'll be back soon.

Hey! I definitely pushed my Achilles too hard too fast this past January/February preparing for my first full (which didn't happen) It was so frustrating but the best thing is to stay off of it until you're truly healed or it just comes back. It was definitely a more frustrating recovery than shin splints. HOWEVER a few things I noticed...heat is worse, ice a lot. I wear compression socks a lot even not running. Also started taking glucosamine chondroiton msm it really made a difference. I constantly had my feet up at home and never wore anything but sneakers or my supportive flip flops..no flats or dress shoes. When I started training again after 3 weeks of not even talking walks- just walked the first week. Then I lowered my run interval significantly. I normally train at a 6/7 min on one minute off. I started back at about 2 minutes of running and 4 minutes of walking. Don't be discouraged by that though as the curve is sharp and I am back to being able to run 4 min on 1 min off for 12 miles already. Another thing I noticed after the Achilles swelling pain disaster was that I HAD to get enough sleep both before and after my runs or it would start to get worse again. I don't think I'll be quite myself for Tinkerbell (PDC) but I think by June / early July I will get back to where I was - which means .... in short...there's still tons of time and hope for wine and dine :)

I'm so sorry to hear this!!!

Rest and ice -- no heat!! -- also, take a aspirin/etc. for pain, and then use compression when you aren't icing - like an Ace Bandage. Also, KT tape is the best if you have some.

I've had Achilles surgery, and I've banged it hard - so hard I cried - to the point where I thought I needed surgery. That place is such a tender point ... keep icing and see how you feel.

The frustration? Totally get it. All of this sucks and I'm so sad for you. :(

Aww...sorry to hear that. I'm looking at not being able to run the June half that I registered for, so I completely understand the disappointment. For me, that and not being able to exercise are worse than the pain of the injury itself. Good luck with your recovery.

My parents are in town visiting from across the country so last night I brought up my dad coming to be "live in Grandpa" while we go to Wine and Dine. He said he'd love to so now we/he just need to get my mom on board. They always come for Thanksgiving so it would mean staying with us for a month. He'll enjoy it, but my mom doesn't like when he's gone that long. So hopefully the seed is planted and it will all work out for DH and I to have our first kid free getaway since we got married!

Thank you for that! You have given me a light at the end of this tunnel I am starting down. @orangejeepgirl has been DMing with me and giving me awesome advice, very similar to yours, so I am hoping to be recovered soon! I will try the glucosamine! :)

Thank you EVERYONE for your kind words! I started to quote you all but it was so long! You guys are the best! I am at a much better place in my head today, still disappointed but I will get past this and pick up where I left off, only much more carefully and definitely not running on the slope in front of my house ever again!

Finally got to run outside today after months of cold, snowy weather. I started out doing good. First mile I did 11:26mm after that I started with the cold weather induced asthma. I was able to do 2 miles in 24:52. I really wanted to get three miles in, but that wasn't happening. lol Anyone else get cold weather induced asthma? Last November I ran in the 40's and it didn't come on. I had been running for two months before that though. Today was near 60, but very windy. When I ran in the 40's, I did wear a scarf to cover my mouth and nose so I'm sure that helped. I really hate the scarf though, I get too warm.

I also think I need to work on my breathing. After running on the treadmill for months, I think I got lazy with it. Any advice would be appreciated. :listen:
I have exercise-induced asthma and cold definitely makes it worse. #1 thing that allows me to run is using an albuterol inhaler before I run. Have you talked to your doc about it? It's a very easy fix! I also highly recommend trying rhythmic breathing: breathe in for an odd number of steps, out for an even number of steps (or in for an even number, out for an odd - your pick). How many steps will depend on your speed, so just try some variations and see what works. It helps regulate your breathing and keep you mindful of it, and studies have found that we exert more force on the leg landing on our exhales, so by using even and odd ins and out, you land on a different leg with each exhale, balancing the extra force across both legs.

Very glad to hear it! Achilles injuries aren't to be taken likely (says she who followed none of the doc's advice as a teen and will now live with a cranky Achilles for life.) Take good care and live to race another day!

Yes, I stopped using heat last night when @orangejeepgirl told me to, lol. I'm on ice, trying to do 15 minutes every hour while I am at work. Taking ibuprofen for pain, but it only hurts when I walk on it so not too bad right now. And I got some KT tape and it helps! I have an ace ankle bandage I put on when I take it off the ice for the other 45 minutes of each hour (seriously they expect me to work at work?? :) ) Thanks for the sympathy, I needed that too, lol.

!
I love this. I've used a similar 'trick' to balance force while climbing on the bike, and switch side breathing to balance strokes in the pool. I'm not sure I can run and count at the same time (chew gum and walk?) In other news today man was hit by bus; left cryptic message in blood, "Counting Steps, damn you PrincessV..." I have to change my playlist to waltzes?

I'll add another trick. Diaphragmatic breathing or belly breathing is another way to relax breathing. It can help with a side-stitch too.

I am going to add one thing - better now than right before Wine & Dine!! Now you have 6 months to rest it and train and you know you have a sensitive area to watch out for and work on. So in the long run, this could be a good thing!

Yes you are right. And I told my husband this morning, I am glad I did this yesterday instead of during my race Saturday. I would have probably pushed through the pain and ended up hurting it worse than I did, with a longer recovery time. :)

:rotfl2: I'm not gonna lie - I'm a former dancer so getting off an 8-count rhythm just about kills me!

Thanks for the tip. I'll give it a try next time I'm out running. I ran another two miles outside today and concentrated more on my breathing. Yesterday I was breathing in and out of my mouth. Today I tried breathing in through the nose and out the mouth. I didn't have any symptoms of the asthma. It was slightly colder today, but not windy and humid (got rained on a little lol). I'm trying to figure out what is triggering the asthma. I haven't brought it up to my doctor yet. I just started running last September and only had the cold weather asthma happen once. After that, I would either run or the treadmill if it was cold or wear a scarf. I didn't think 60 degree weather would trigger it so I didn't use a scarf yesterday. If it becomes an issue, I'll bring it up to the doctor.

Sorry your going through that. It can be really frustrating. I twisted my ankle early last summer playing catch with my son and it really slowed down my training for a 10 miler. I was feeling ready to go about 3 months before the race and that knocked me down a bit,but took my time resting it up and getting back at it and made it through. Good luck!!

Much better running this past week. Got in my first longer run of 8.5 miles. Ran 5k distance Tuesday and did some Fartleks this morning. Signed up for my first 5k of the year a week from Sunday. Very excited, the run is in Ann Arbor on U of M campus and finishes on the field of Michigan Stadium (The Big House)! Can't think of a better 5k to run here being a huge Wolverine fan! Now to find a good 10k to run for POT.

That stinks. :( I'll just say good posts to all the advice you've gotten. I've gone through a few different injuries and while really frustrating, you do get back quicker than you think you will. Just be sure you really give yourself time to heal. It's easy to get overly anxious to start exercising again as you heal, but getting back to it too quickly can just cause an even longer delay if you aggravate the injury again. I speak from experience on this. Anyway, just do what everyone here as suggested and you'll be back at it in no time.
