Wine and Dine 2015

So the weather for my 10K on Saturday is 44 at race start and around 49 by the time I am done. Brrr! I get hot when I run, but I don't ever run when it's that cold. Being a very new runner, I have 2 choices for a top to wear - a short sleeve shirt or, what I had planned on wearing, a tank. Both with shorts as the only running pants I have fall down when I run, lol. No funds to buy something new beforehand, at least not till Friday night, but I was sticking to the plan of not trying something new on race day. I have a Danskin lightweight jacket I could wear, but it is 33% cotton and it doesn't breathe. I hate not knowing what I am doing!

I actually think that's perfect running temp. I love it in the 40s - low 50s. Just the standing around at the beginning is the only downside. Anyway, I think like someone above said, you could layer your two tech shirts and maybe that would be enough warmth for you. I ran last weekend and there was some light rain, so I started out with a lightweight rain jacket that I tied around my waist at about mile 8 or so. It wasn't great, but honestly didn't cause me much trouble and didn't slow me down any.

Two weeks ago today, I had back surgery, discectomy L4L5. And today I walked 2.03 miles in 40:20. This is a huge achievement!!!

WOW! Congrats on returning to walking so quickly. Great job.

I usually just wear a long sleeve tech shirt with shorts but I'm a bigger runner so tend to get warm enough after a mile or so. Caps and gloves are nice at the beginning but tend to get too hot for me. My fingers tend to stay cold the longest, the cheap cotton gloves you can buy at hardware stores are OK and can be thrown away if you get too hot.

Yeah, I am looking forward to getting some long sleeve tech shirts. Hopefully there will be sales on them since it is going into warm weather. I am wearing a headband (to keep my crazy bangs back) under a moisture wicking hat (like in my avatar pic), so I think my head will be okay. I have some old, cheap gloves I may wear and toss, thanks for that idea. Maybe if my hands are warm I will feel warmer.

If the tank is moisture-wicking I almost wonder if you could just wear a normal long sleeve shirt over it and that would be enough. Or, layer the tank and tshirt. Or, wear the jacket you have and be ok with taking it off partway and tying it around your waist.

I was thinking of wearing the jacket and tying it around my waist. Maybe I will try that on my treadmill run today and see if it annoys me. :) My tank is moisture wicking.. I just got it for this race, then the weather turned cold. It is a loose tank to wear over a sports bra. I have a couple of tight tanks with the bra built in but they tend to make me really hat and I rarely wear them. Thanks for the ideas. Sorry I seem to have so many trivial questions all the time! I really am a total newb (as my son would say!) to running!

I ran with a jacket around my waist for my first 10K and I was miserable. In retrospect, I should've just thrown it away - it was one of those cheapie $15 Danskin Active zip-up jackets from WalMart. The temps were roughly what you were expecting - I wore a sports tank, a long-sleeved tech shirt (again, another Danskin WalMart cheapie that I ended up tossing when I changed tops at the finish line).

I wish I had known you needed long-sleeve stuff! I have a whole drawer full that I will probably never wear again - I could've sent you something. :(

That said, the long-sleeve v-neck Danskin blend shirts are nice for the price point. And, at least when I got hot, I could push the sleeves up.

WAY TO GO!! That's awesome!!

Finally got to run outside today after months of cold, snowy weather. I started out doing good. First mile I did 11:26mm after that I started with the cold weather induced asthma. I was able to do 2 miles in 24:52. I really wanted to get three miles in, but that wasn't happening. lol Anyone else get cold weather induced asthma? Last November I ran in the 40's and it didn't come on. I had been running for two months before that though. Today was near 60, but very windy. When I ran in the 40's, I did wear a scarf to cover my mouth and nose so I'm sure that helped. I really hate the scarf though, I get too warm.

I also think I need to work on my breathing. After running on the treadmill for months, I think I got lazy with it. Any advice would be appreciated. :listen:

I am not a runner, but I do get cold-induced asthma attacks when it is below 15-20 (along with allergy-induced, humidity-induced, and exercise-induced, LOL). It only takes about 2 minutes of being out in the cold, though and it doesn't matter if I'm walking, shoveling, or standing still--less than that if it is really cold. I haven't found anything that helps other than pre-treating.

That's what I am afraid of! It is my first 10K, my first race ever, actually, and I don't want something silly like a jacket tied around my waist to mess up my run. And my jacket is one of those $15 Danskin Active cheapie jackets, lol, but it is my only one and can't afford to toss it. I may just go with my original plan and make my hubby stand near the start and give it to him before we start. This isn't a huge race (maybe 300-400 people?), so that shouldn't be too difficult.

That is so sweet of you to even think you could have sent me something! Thank you!

Money is just tight right now, and after paying for W&D registration, then this race registration, buying the few tops I have, etc. I hate to ask to buy more stuff for myself. Luckily my birthday is coming up on the 19th and I asked for money to get some better running shoes from a running store when I go visit my daughter in Colorado Springs this month. And I will probably hit up a few Goodwill stores to find some stuff for everyday training.

Thanks for all your helpful advice all the time! Sorry to be so full of questions! :)

I think that's definitely a good plan - especially since it's a smaller race, you should have no problem handing it off to him at the start! Also, you won't need to be at the start line as early as bigger races either, so keep that in mind! I think for our half marathon (800 people doing the 5K and Half total), we parked and walked up about 15 minutes before race start. Less time to get nervous that way!

Good luck on your first race and yay for being April birthday buddies! My birthday is on the 11th!

Yay April birthdays! I actually have to get there early as the parking sucks (so I was told). But I can get my stuff and wait in the car, lol!

That's awesome! My dh had this same exact surgery in November. He's like a totally different person. (Except for when he puts on his work gear. Grrr...) But he had been in chronic pain for so long, that he just snapped at everything. This surgery has given me back the fun loving guy I missed!

I got to set up my fundraising page today for Pitching In For Kids! I'm actually really excited to be helping them. They seem like such an awesome organization. Anyway, if anyone is interested, here's my site. (Even if you're not going to donate, check it out. It's kind of funny lol.) Laura's Fundraising Page

44-49 degrees really isn't that bad , though if you are not used to it it may feel cold, but once you start running you will be surprised how much you actually warm up, I would recommend layering the tank and t and take your jacket and pants with you to start, yank those off about 5 mins before the start and hand them off to your hubby and I honestly think you will be fine, I ran my first half at night in 50ish degrees in just shorts and tshirt and I was hot by the end. as long as you don't think about it your body should be fine, think warm happy thoughts and you probably wont even notice, maybe have hubby bring a blanket or large towel with him to meet you at the finish that's when you will feel it ...once you stop

Another option for your arms is to get some knee socks and cut off the toes, then use them as arm warmers. Buy the socks at the $ Store or goodwill and toss them during the run if you warm up or they just start to bug you. You can google instructions for turning socks into arm warmers for running.
Best of luck and enjoy the race. -- Suzanne

I really wish I'd taken the cross-training more seriously (I kinda slacked off on that or would ride my bike to the pub or a friends house and write that off as Cross Training).

I'm ultimately following a plan I smashed together that goes Disneyland Half - Wine & Dine - WDW Full (they all pretty much line up well), and am doing weights and cross-training at the gym three days a week as well (Sunday is my only 'off' day). I can already tell a difference in my stamina! I think my ultimate goal is to ditch the intervals (I just don't really like them) and focus on trying to run through as much as I can and take walk breaks when I need to.

First, I live the idea of riding a bike to the pub for cross training. That's my kind if exercise!

I seriously need to get in the cross training! I've been saying it forever and it's time to buckle down and get to business. I think it will help my stamina and speed.

I wore a short sleeve shirt to run the Enchabted 10K and was so glad I did! I was lucky I had a Mylar blanket from the day before and that held me over till we got moving. I also wore mittens.

Thank you everyone for all the advice. But now it doesn't matter. I've hurt my Achilles and can barely walk. :( :(
I've iced and now I have the heating pad on it while the ice pack is back in the freezer. I'm so upset! I've been crying all evening, not from pain, but from disappointment. My family doesn't understand why I'm so upset. Let it heal and run a different race, etc. But I was so excited, I'd trained and could run the distance at a good time. And now I will have to start all over again. :(

Sorry to be such a downer, but hopefully you guys will "get" my frustration.

Ohhh noo.. What did you do to it?? Did you go to the doctor?? I'm an athletic trainer (I work in Sports Medicine.. not just a "personal trainer") so I may be able to offer you some advice if you haven't seen a doctor and want to DM me.

I'm so sorry @Dis5150 . Hopefully you can rebound from this quickly and continue on your running journey where this will turn into a small bump in your rearview mirror. But for now I know it hurts. *hugs*

So sorry @Dis5150. You are not starting over, you are continuing. Injury will heal and you will be strong and suffered through an experience, but experience none the less. Sad and disappointed for you, you have every reason to be crushed. Follow the injury recoup plan.

so sorry to hear that, hears hoping youll be back on your feet soon, even if its not for this race. and you def. will not have to start over, once a body becomes used to running you wont lose as much as you think. As soon as you heal up you should be able to pick up relatively close to where you left off. don't let this break you...you will come back better and stronger!!
