Hello Everyone! Going to be back at the fort in April. Wife wanted the preferred site this trip. We will be bringing the van this time with a 14x14 cabin tent. (wife's idea) Is there going to be enough pad for this size tent and running support lines? Don't want any surprises.
Thanks!:drinking:

on the preferred it will be big enough, but there is no sand or very little at the back of the sites. So you won't be able to stake down your tent like one normally would do. The pad is concrete so your tent floor will be very hard, hope you are bringing cots to sleep on.

Thank You! That was what I was figuring. I will make the needed changes for my equipment.

Let me clarify what Chris said. On the PREMIUM sites, you will need to find an alternative to anchor it. Preferred, Full and Partial sites all have the coquina tent pads.

Burner,

I stayed in Loop 200 (site 218) back in January which is a Preferred site. Here is a picture of the back with my popup and the EZup on the tent pad.

The EZ Up is 9x9 straight legged and I had set it in the exact front corner of the tent pad. I butted up to the trailer which was about 6.5 ft wide. Note to the rear where the folding chair is there is still 5-6 feet or so behind the EZ Up leg.

Point is if my site was representative of other Preferreds, you should fit it just barely. The bbq grill post is in one corner and there's no guarantee I was in a representative site. Just note the size of the tent on your reservation (call and have it added as a note) and the assigning CM will try to fit you on an available site. Have fun!

PS - I have two canvas wall tents and folding cots from Cabellas that I am DYING to try out at the Fort sometime (as long as it's not July). :beach:

Super guys, Thanks! You just saved me 500lbs of sandbags in the van and $300 in icey hot! I thought that might be the case but wanted
to get some feedback just to make sure.
I have been known to be wrong before.
Love the Aliner! Saw one at Camping World I really liked but,
my financial adviser escorted me off the lot.
Going last week in April and will try to post lots of pics for everyone!
Thanks again!

P.S. I know what you mean about the canvas wall tents. I helped a scout camp remove some tents during a renovation and
in return got a super nice LARGE canvas to take home. it took three of us to get it out of the truck. Haven't been
able to use it because I can't find anywhere the sites are big enough. Trip to Cherokee Natl. Forest in the fall, maybe can get off
the designated site areas and use it then.

Hey mine are old Scout Camp tents too - that's neat. Bought them surplus from Philmont Scout Ranch - one is 7x9 (a camper tent) and one is 10x12 (a staff tent). Here is the 7x9. The 10x12 is the same just, well, bigger. Yours sounds REALLY big.

Mine is a lot older than yours, with 8' poles standing on either end and lots of 2" rope. I have to use
the Jeep and a come-along attached to a sturdy tree to even think of raising it. Think M*A*S*H.
The sides and ends roll up to the top of the walls for ventilation.

You guys had fancy boy scout tents. This is what we used at summer camp. And I don't remember the tent at Philmont base camp being that nice either. 7-17-77a!

Never was in the scouts, got mine from a girl scout camp when my daughter was scouting.
At least yours didn't have a big girl scout logo on either end.
You know, that kinda looks like accommodations from a chain gang camp.
'77 musta been a good year for you.

That was our crew number at Philmont. It is burned into my memory because every camp or ranger station we went into we SCREAMED it as we arrived. "717-77a" It was in fact the day we hit the trail. The "a" was because there were other crews starting that day, but we never ran into them on trail.

And it was a good year. I had my 16th birthday at Philmont during that trip.

Ah, I see. Well, glad to know you had a good time even in those "meager" accommodations.:duck:I know what you mean by burned in
your memory. My first flight number in the Air Force was 3743. That number was everywhere, written, repeated, sung, and how I felt
at the end of each day, was tattooed on my soul somewhere.
Thanks again for the assistance and some laughs!

While we're on the subject, here is my 10x12 - this is the one I want to take to the Fort.

Seriously burny, a tent that size probably needs roped/guyed support all the around 360 degree. The problem I foresee on Preferred is what to do when you come around on the concrete drive side? Unless you have a rugby team to help you put it up you might want to opt for a plan B.

Jim, that's a classic summer camp tent picture. I worked 3 summers as a kid at my local BSA Camp for 3 summers on staff and had a tent like that only a little bigger (and a creeky old metal spring bed). Favorite memory was one morning laying in bed before wakeup with the flaps open like you show and a skunk walked through between the beds like he owned the place. You could hear his toenails on the wooden pallet floor and the tip top of his tail up in the air at my eye level as we moseyed through.

Then of course there was the rain, mosquitos, snakes, humidity, rashes, blisters, sunburn, and laughter. I remember laughing a lot back in those days.

Ed,
Oh, no, no...you misunderstand. NOT taking canvas tent, it's like 14x16. Wife bought 14x14 instant tent that arrives tomorrow. All nylon with about 300lbs difference. As mentioned above,
big canvas tent going in the fall. Along with my daughters boyfriend (6'8") and could be a lineman for your Tide, and two of his friends. They are too tall to sleep in the camper. Why I take giant 1 room tent.
Yes, I needed the jeep, come along and about half a mile of 2" rope to get her up and tie her down. I had to cut 18" wooden stakes from 1x2 to hold it.
I'm getting too old to wrangle the big canvas by myself. That would have made a funny trip report though!:rotfl:
That's a perfect tent to take to the Fort! The canvas looks sturdy enuff to withstand most Florida winds. Let us know when you take it, it looks like it could use a few more stories!

Thanks for your concern and advice!

1) Looks a tad like my little "Pup" unit in Southeast Asia.
2) Still got mighty wet!
3) Kept off the dew, but not that good for monsoons or shrapnel.

My DW was just reading these posts and started laughing. I asked her what she was laughing about. (Not sure why I did that). She said that all men must have one of those. I thought she was talking about the Aliner. I then asked her "one of what?" (Again, I'm not sure why I did that) She then with a grin stated "A financial adviser". I guess I have one also.

Yup! I don't know where I would be without one. Mine seems to be a combination of mind reader and magician.
Can't beat her though! My best friend, my life, my joy, my wife.
