will I be able to change 7 night stay to a 4-5 night stay?

We are planning a trip for Nov 2013. Not sure if we are doing a full week or not. If airfare winds up being too much, we will drive down which means we'll have a shorter stay.

What I was thinking about doing was booking for the longer stay and then keep checking on airfare. If I'm not able to get a good price, then I would sadly modify the reservation before the final payment is due.

Is that possible?

Yes, it is possible to modify a reservation and take nights away if you have to. In fact, it's better to book the maximum number of nights you think you would need and shorten it than to try and add nights later on, as sometimes those extra nights are not available to add (especially if you are booked with a discount).
