Wild Africa Trek @ AK

I was allowed to take my phone with me. They hooked an attachment thing through the bottom of my case (through the hole for the charger) so I could hook it to my harness.

Thanks to those who posted pics and weighed in on this. Quick question: how strapped in are you as you go over the bridge? And does it sway a lot as one goes across it? I'm really tempted to do it, but am also concerned over the bridge/missing steps. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I've done it, and the bridge is very, very, VERY safe. I know it looks like there's missing steps, but there's actually a mesh under the steps, so even if you put a leg through, you're not going anywhere. Also, you're hooked to a tether above you by a bungee cord, so if by some bizarre chance you manage to fling yourself over the ropes and off the bridge... you're still not going anywhere.

My husband commented that he thought it was a bit overkill, but we had a little old lady with a cane in our group and I think she was grateful for the extra security.

Me, I just wanted to stand in the middle and jump up and down on the bridge, but I couldn't because there were people behind me, waiting to cross. ;)

You are very strapped in. The harness you wear has straps that go between your legs. Before you go out on the ledges or over the bridges, the guides check and tighten your straps. There's a rope off your back with a hook and they hook you to a pole on the ledges and a rope above you on the bridges. The bridge also has a net under it.

Thank you both so much for providing these details! All the info is so very helpful and now I'm just about ready to book the tour (need to book the trip first, but a girl can dream :-)).

Yes!!! We would do it again in a heartbeat! We did the first tour of the morning and we had breakfast foods. They were different from what I would normally eat and a little bit exotic - I ate most of it though and thought it was very good. We loved the guides and they were great with the big baby in our group (that would be me) who has a horrible fear of heights. They had me walk the suspended bridge by myself with my best friend waiting for me at the end and my DH bringing up the rear and were super considerate and kind. We loved this tour and hope to do it again in the future.

Thanks for the photos! Glad to hear I can just take my phone with a strap. :)

Yeah, others have answered, but there is absolutely no way you will ever go anywhere, and the swaying is barely even a thing.

I also did it a couple of years ago in September. Did the first one on offer for the day, (so was in the park before opening) and just loved it. The breakfast meal was quite delicious. Being able to stop and really look at the animals was fantastic.

Look at the pictures of the bridge. There are BIG gaps between the boards. I have short legs for 5'2" and I had to really stretch to make several of the gaps. We had an 8 year old with our group who was utterly fearless and actually jumped between the gaps. If your youngster can handle heights and the BIG gaps (especially over the crocodiles) than it is stupendous tour. But I know some 12 year olds who would freak out on the bridge over the crocodile pool. Of course it is Disney and you are tethered and the bridge has a net underneath, but sometimes that does not calm a panicked mind,

DVC members get 15% off. But if there is a better discount I will be sure to take advantage :)

I'm looking at this for my Sept trip also. Last year they had a $50 discount if you did an afternoon time, trying to balance the discount vs the afternoon heat and thunderstorm possibilities.
I had completely forgotten about this and now am considering it as well. How far ahead does booking for tours open up?
I'm also interested in this, didn't see any answers yet on when does the booking open up? And when/where can you find out about discounts? (Looking at Thanksgiving this year) Also, what times during the day is it offered? :thanks:

But the best part is that the you don't look really see it much in pictures so you look like you're really taking a risk. Makes for some great photos.

My husband and I did the Trek last week. Fun, not scary, nice extra time with animals and informative talks from cast members.

We booked through our travel agent about six weeks out.

Tours ran all day starting at park (maybe before) opening, leaving every 45 minutes.

Our tour was $189. Price varies by season. I think it goes up to $249 in summer. The $50 discount is for taking the tour in the hot afternoon.

I was happy to leave my phone / camera in locked storage. I enjoyed the experience more not taking and posting photos and checking the phone for time and other info. The photos they took were great.

You'll find lots of answers here.

I'm thinking we will do this on our next trip, and working on our plan for our AK day. Does this tour basically cover the same part of AK that KS does? (Would we see all the animals we'd see on KS? I'm asking because if we're going to see everything on the tour, then I wouldn't want to plan to go on KS too or use a FP+ for it) Does it cover anything else? Go anywhere else special / behind the scenes we couldn't see without going on the tour? (Besides the obvious walking over the crocodiles/hippos already mentioned) Just trying to plan the rest of our day and don't want to double up on anything we don't need to (or miss anything by mistakingly thinking we'll see it on the tour). Thanks!

You do the KS, but also there are a couple of spots where the driver pulls over and you get several minutes to take pics/admire the animals for much longer than the 30 seconds the normal KS gets. Plus the meal is served overlooking the savannah so you get to see some animals then as well (they provide binoculars)
