So we are a little late in getting a Wii but I think this year we are finally ready to get one...can anybody give me some idea what I need to purchase in addition to what comes standard with it.

We are a family of 4 and I was hoping to get the Wii along with Super Mario bros. I think that all 4 of us can play that together...so would I need to purchase the Wii along with 3 extra controllers? Is there anything else that is a must have in order to play?? Ie: Batteries, chargers, cables, controllers, etc?

Finally...is $199 the average price...any chance of that getting lower before Christmas? TIA:goodvibes

Yes, you can definitely get it at a better price than $199. Keep checking dealsofamerica.com. I see it there once in a while for $149 brand new + Wii Sports Resort which is a $49 game. I believe it is usually dell that sells it for that price so you can always check dell.com too.

I forgot what the standard Wii comes with as far as controllers, but I would say to get a controller & a nunchuck for 4 people.

We use batteries and don't go through them too fast. I know some people will say to get the chargeable ones.

Mario Kart is a great game and we bought the wheels for that game. You can play without the wheels, but I think it is easier with the wheel.

Have fun & happy shopping!

We are a family of 5 and are quite happy with 2 remote/numchucks. I can't imagine 4 playing at once in my averege sized living room. I think we would fall over each other or kids would complain about not being right in front of the 32" TV.

We usually play winner. Honestly, after the newness wore off we only want to play 1-2 at a time... not everyone wants to play at the same time.

The Wii will come with 1 remote/numchuck. If it is the "new wii" you'll want the "new motion remotes"

So you are talking $39 for motion remote + 19 for numchuck. Yeah... $60 just for the second player. Or a whopping $180 for 3 more players. And we're not even discussing the Mario wheel :rotfl2:

Will you really play 4 at a time very often? Is it worth $180 to you? While my family might have loved 4 player for a whopping 2 weeks, they now prefer playing against one other or alone. I'd hate to have all that $$ go to waste.

Also, Costco sells for a little less than retail. In Brick & Mortar stores you are going to be hard pressed to find less than $199 MSRP although what wou will find are perks... free store gift card, free game, etc...

Target has the Wii this week for $187 with the sport resort or something like that. I saw that it might be even cheaper on Black Friday!

I finally gave in and bought my DD a Wii for Christmas. Amazon had it for $174...free shipping...and no tax. Picked up 2 games plus another Wii motion plus controller at TRU this past week with the B2G1 free deal. Amazon had the Wii Mario Kart for $32.99 today....might check and see if it is still on sale as this is a great price. You can buy extra wheels at Amazon also for $9.99 (nerf or official Wii) plus the nunchuck is $16.79 (black).

Stupid question...what is the difference between the numchuck and the controller? Do you need both of those to play most games? Or do some games use the numchuck and some games use the controller?

I am specifically thinking of the Mario Bros. game...that is our favorite game to play and would love to be able to play 4 of us at a time. But $180 for 3 extra controllers and 3 extra numchucks is quite costly.

Does the system come with all of the controls that I would need to hook it to my T.V.? We have a pretty standard Vizo 40 inch flat screen.

We too don't have room to all stand up and play at the same time but I insist on everyone keeping the straps on their wrist. So, even something like bowling makes it nice for everyone to have their own remote because it's a hassle to unstrap it and trade after each turn. After the 1st hour of trading remotes, we ran out to best buy and got 2 more :)

We don't play it as much with all 4 of us but it's nice when the girls have a friend or 2 over to have the extra. We only have 2 numchucks and that hasn't ever been a problem.

Have fun!

We really like the sports games that came with ours but I'll tell you what we use the Wii most for is watching Netflix programming with the disc you can order from them. You'd have to have a Netflix account and wireless internet but we love the "on demand" setup. You can browse their selection and watch instantly. Our toddlers are really too young to enjoy the Wii games but get a lot benefit of the children's programming, including Disney (!) that Netflix offers.

We have 4 controllers and 2 nunchucks. A lot of games that use the nunchuck are just 2 player games. We love to play 4 people games. Especially Mario Kart. (and the nerf wheels are really nice to have, not needed but much nicer) When we have family game night this is always brought out. But the majority of the time it is just 1 or 2 players.

Somewhere this week has a wii for $199 with a $25.00 gift card. So I would look for one somewhere in the $175 range.

Do you need a remote and nunchuck to play Mario Kart? Do you need a nunchuck if you use a remote & wheel?

You don't need a nunchuck for mario kart. You do need a remote for each of the players (and imo it's MUCH easier to play with 4 players than Super Mario Bros is. That game is hard the more players you put into it!)

You don't really need the wheel either. It's personal preference. Dh and I keep ours around and the kids take turns using it, but we never really use it.

As for how many remotes/nunchucks/etc you need... I'm a big fan of having 4 wii remotes. This isn't so much for our family, as the 4 of us rarely play at much but because we regularly have people over who want to play all at once and it makes for more fun. Our living room is pretty small, but we manage :) We only have 2 nunchuks though as well as 2 classic controllers (so you can play the old school nintendo games you can download (for a fee of course))

Games I recommend are Super Mario Bros, Mario Kart, Boomblox, and the wii fit if you really want to splurge. Those have had the longest life in our household :)

Good luck and enjoy!

I just picked up a Wii for $187 (Target) for Christmas. We wanted the black Wii and those seem to be getting harder and harder to find. I figured by Christmas the black will be gone. It was $187 for the console, 2 games, one motion plus controller and a nunchuk. I figure there will be deals on the accessories and games the closer it gets to Christmas but didn't want to miss out on the black console. Has anyone played Guilty Party yet? It seems to get alot of air time on the Disney Channel.

I didn't care much for Game Party - it was OK but not that engaging.

We have 4 controllers and 2 nunchucks. We had only 1 nunchuck initially and quickly picked up another one cheap through our local Kijiji. (Craigslist isnt big in my area).

Our whole system was purchased used - mostly because hubby's good friend is a game system expert and could fix it for us if there were any problems. He modded it for us so we can have whatever games we want.

Sadly, we have had the wii since January and really have not played with it much at all. It is such a bummer - especially since I like it. My kids are 9 and 8 and only play with it occassionally. They only seem to like it when I go and play with them and I just haven't done that in a while.

My fave game is the Olympics though - that one is fun :)

I would personally buy all the accessories used. They're cheap enough that way that if you get a dud or two, it's still worth it vs buying new.

I have 2 guitars and I'm still debating whether to keep it or get rid of it. I keep thinking as my kids grow older they might like it more. But in the meantime, it's taking up space!

Have fun! Overall, I like the wii....but still can't decide if it was worth the money considering ours doesn't get used a whole lot.

We have a Wii, we have 4 remotes, 2 nunchucks and 4 wheels for Mario Kart. you don't need the wheels but we find it much easier with them. I can't remember how many remotes came with our Wii but we made sure we had 4 so we could all play and have our own remotes for every game we wanted to play. We have around 5 that we can do 4 players on and we have an average sized living room, there's plenty of room for everyone to play, standing or sitting. When we play Just Dance we normally have 3 or 4 people playing and we all stand staggered, smaller players in front, that way the remotes can all be read and we all have room. Honestly I can't imagine us having 2 controllers for most of the family games we play. As for nunchucks we rarely use them, DBF has Punch Out and we have a few games with the Wii Fit that need the chucks but that's about it, we rarely need them so we only have 2. All games will tell you what accessories you need to play the game, on the back in the top it shows what is needed. We also bought a lot of those accessories (and games) used at Game Stop so consider that if you're buying a lot goodies to go with your system. :)

Haven't heard anyone mention component cables. If your 40"LCD is an HDTV, the component cables will give you maximum picture quality - though not true HDTV, since the current Wii doesn't support it.

Also does anybody have recommendations on some good games. We are looking to probably get about 4 games. We have 2 DD's...one is 7 and the other 11. Def. looking for games that can be played as a family and ones that do not require the purchase of a lot of extra equipment. TIA:goodvibes

Every family member from 60 down can use it.
Tell that to my DH's 80-year old plus aunt and uncle. They're on the Wii Bowling League at their retirement community!

OP: I would recommend that you also buy the balance board. We bought a Wii last December and the balance board was SOLD OUT for months after Christmas. I missed out on a deal last year from Amazon where they gave you a $50 Amazon giftcard if you bought both at once. I ended up getting a $25 Target giftcard and then I used it to help buy an extra controller and numchuck.
