Why would a cash room be available but not a points room

To be fair, I don't have access so I've never been able to price compare, just going off of what I've heard from others in terms of how much it was saying it would be to swap in their experience.

If you calculated the value, it was about half the value of renting and paying cash.

But, for me, the ease of trading is what was worth it…because I see value in use and if they cover my DVC stays or a DCL cruise, it works!

Personally, I have no desire to get into a rental…which is why I am trading points for my AP…instead of renting them!

Obviously, it’s always more cost effective to rent and then pay…but, my guess is that for owners who do it, they are okay with the value.

Curious to know how the follow scenario would potentially play out, when it comes to cash rooms vs availability.

Assuming you have booked a deluxe studio at ie VGF and all of the same rooms at the DVC member site is also fully booked. However there would be availability in other room types ie 1br and 2br. Online with Disney they are still selling the same deluxe studio for cash.
When you arrive to checkin your room won’t be available for whatever reason. Will Disney then give you their room if it’s still unsold or will they instead upgrade you to a 1br or 2br whatever works best date wise?

My guess is that they would give you whatever room they can that is available.

While the inventory is different for booking purposes, it’s not when it comes to room assignments.

That is why the contract explains that when you stay, you can be in declared or undeclared inventory.

For example, let’s say only 1st and 2nd floor of a building was declared….DVC owners can be put on any floor with cash guests being allowed on the 1st and 2nd floor

Even if X number of studios are available to book on points and Y number to book on cash, I don't think specific rooms are designated as points vs. cash. For instance, if there are 100 studios in a given resort, 98 of them might be available for points and 2 for cash. But nothing says that the rooms numbered 1-98 can be assigned only to DVC and the rooms that are numbered 99 and 100 can be assigned only to cash guests.

So if you book a studio with points, and there's "a" studio available when you check in, you'll be given a studio (indicating that Disney didn't sell the full number of cash studios that they could have sold). I don't think they'll give you a larger villa, if they have a studio available.

That was what I was curious about. I thought either a room would be a room at VGF regardless of how it could be booked, or could be that all Disney's DVC rooms which they obtained are theirs and if not booked with cash they will sit empty as its their points that was used afterall.

Part of the reason that DVD can’t sell 100% of the points is to have leeway for issues.

And while they don’t ever hold back rooms specifically, the fact they own helps to keep that buffer.

Plus, some of the cash rooms come from breakage which is DVC inventory.

Not sure it’s mentioned here but in past I’ve had success calling in and getting them to pull cash room back for me to book with dvc points. Now both times I did this was on short notice where it seemed unlikely they would be able to book the room via cash so maybe that’s why they accommodated. Additionally one time was for my sister when she staid down there during hurricane so it’s completely possible we got lucky with circumstances and they won’t do all time but I always feel can’t hurt to call and ask.

I tried to do this with VDH when we were going to buy direct for a welcome home stay and it was an absolute no. I don't think they'll do it if they weren't willing to do it for a direct purchase, but like you said never hurts to ask! It was also on short notice for Easter Weekend which is a holiday so maybe that's why who knows.

We are resale and we were actually promised a 2 bedroom riviera room for September and a member services agent put a hold for us because our akv hadn't processed and we wanted bcv and it was unavailable for 2 nights we need, yet available for cash guests. I thought it was strange we were offered this since it was closest to bcv and we were resale, but I didn't question it.

Well when the membership was processed and I called to tell them to book the hold, it was a no of course, apparently she "messed up"

Even after the mess up and supervisor involved, they never offered to pull a cash room, but instead they said they marked our waitlist as a "VIP waitlist"

I asked what this meant and they said it meant we would be bumped to the top of the waitlist.

So my point is I never had luck with them pulling rooms yet 😆
