Why no SSR love?

Will DVC give a friend of mine a "special" rate for a 4 day stay in June @ SSR if they agree to attend a DVC presentation?

I am thinking if the rooms are empty anyhow?

Last year I guess they would give you a FREE week if you bought.

OH MY GOSH - Thank you SaratogaShan.

Ok this is just a huge peeve of mine anyway. I swear I must have issues because I totally don't get the argument of not wanting a spread out resort because I might have to walk an additional 500 yards to get to my room when we walk in the parks all day. Drives me nuts!

Oh Cobbler, we got to get together someday for a drink! :drinking1 This is my pet peeve also! I remember our first stay at SSR, in CP, and all I read for months how far of a walk it was to AP/High Rock. Uh, I was shocked to discover only a 5 min brisk walk. You really would have thought it required a tram the way people moaned and groaned about it.

Bring BWV into the picture, and it is downright funny how people complain about the long hallways. I mean come on, it's a hallway! How many miles do you walk in the park? (and Yes, I have walked the hallways!) I mean, people actually won't stay at a resort because of a long hallway!!? :smokin:

btw, my spandex will be purple! ;) (get it Cobbler and DisFlan?? heehee)

I suppose this depends on where you're going to and from. I've made the trek from the SSR area to DTD many times in the past, from both the far (ugh!) and close ends. IMO, the walk from Epcot to BWV is much nicer. ;)

DisFlan
I agree with DisFlan -- it's not the walking, it's where your feet can take you. DH and I enjoy walking. I think it's great that they made it possible to walk from SSR to DTD because a lot of people enjoy DTD but unfortunately we're not DTD fans. We spend just a few hours there each trip and rarely eat at any of the restaurants there. We prefer the restaurants at Epcot (we're vegetarians and we prefer the vegetarian options at Epcot to those at DTD). For us, being able to pop in to Epcot for a meal or a Flower Power concert or to see Illuminations is part of the fun of being at WDW. I keep reading that there are changes coming to DTD so I'm keeping an open mind!

The long hallway at BWV gets me feeling a bit claustrophobic because of no windows, no air, etc. I guess that's what I don't like about the hotel like resorts and what I like about SSR and OKW.

I agree 100% with you on the whole claustrophobic thing! I really love the outside walkways, and having a breath of fresh air and dose of sunshine. I was mainly talking about those that gripe about the walk itself, JMHO, of course!!

Yes, OKW and SSR are the best set up there is! :thumbsup2

Well my guide DID come in.

I bought at HH.

Now I can stay there with no worries.

I always felt so ?? unclean taking away HH owners rooms with my BCV pts.

(btw 87 dollars a point and you get 05 pts, and no taxes or dues for 05)

So about this SSR question, does anyone have an answer?

What can we do?

Hey, I thought you owned at BWV!!!!! What gives???

I did a add on of 65 HH pts, this past week. 65 =13 x5=studio on Sun-Thur.

I'll book that, and then at 7 mths attempt to get into a one bedroom, with off site pts i have.

Stayed there alot in the past, but getting in is getting harder to do as time goes on. Wanted/Needed the 11 mth window.

I wonder if the rumor is true that the heat in the SAB pool was turned down, to help defray the losses WDW is suffering with SSR?

We own at BWV, and have never stayed there. (going for 1st time this June).

We bought at BWV because we thought we would always be going there.

Well once we learned we couldn't use strorm along bay unless we stayed at the BCV, we always stayed there.

Anyhow...... about 5 years ago we stayed at HH, one night as a stop over point.

Fell in love with the place and have stayed there 8 times since. Best resort ever, FOR US.

Best location on the island. The evenings in shelter cove are wonderful. Walking along the boardwalk area, fireworks, Shannon Tanner, live bands, what a setting....

Want the ocean=no problem, 5 min tops, by a shuttle bus that is a push of a button away.

We will be buying enough pts at HH (via resale) to spend 2 mths a year there once we are retired.

Thanks for bringing this to our attention. Just had to copy and paste it for all to see. Wonder if he'll sell his BWV points I;m sure all us SSR owners will line up to buy them. Of course his ignorance is showing since 2 mths worth of points would probably cost more than a private beach house up the coast a little. :rotfl2:

They were offering a 100 point bonus last year for buying in, but that was only after you purchased. Don't think there is anything offered for just looking. When we bought we were staying at AK and they applied the cost of our room to the DVC purchase. Don't know if they still do that. Six nights at AK was around $1500. used that for extra points.

I certainly do NOT think of SSR owners as second rate. But as boatboatboat says, some of us have concerns about SSR's size, and the large number of owners impacting availability at other resorts. It'll be hard for, say, a BCV or WL owner to get a ressie at their own resort after the 7 mo. mark if even a fraction of SSR's owners decide they want to stay there instead of their home resort.

This has nothing to do with how classy SSR or its owners are. It's a very nice resort.

DisFlan

There currently is an 11 month window for our home resort. Why should BCV or WL owners expect to still have a priority after 7 months? It has always been a selling point for DVC members to be able to stay at any new resort that gets built by DVC. I have never heard of any exclusivity offered by Disney other than the 11 month window. My guide repeatedly told us that it's important to plan ahead for that reason. I own at two different DVC resorts and I have no problem with any owners of any other DVC resort using their points at them. That's what my 11 month window is for- making sure I get first crack at those resorts. If I have to stay elsewhere because of a last minute trip, that comes with the territory. In fact that exact thing happened last summer and we were forced to stay at SSR because OKW was not available. We ended up loving SSR that we bought our first add-on. We never even considered adding on at BWV, WLV, BCV, HH, or VB.

I'm a little lost. What's the difference between the number of owners at one large resort, or several small ones?

Speaking for MY SELF, my concern is that there will be a $hit pile of SSR contracts sold(it's a large off site resort). IMO the people who buy at a resort such as SSR are MUCH more likely to try and book rooms into the BCV's and the BWV's simpy due to location. When BCV was built, it in some ways took some of the preasure off of the BWV's. SSR is IMO going to put more strain on availabilty.

I may be wrong, but i doubt if you see many BWV or BCV owners trying to book stays at SSR, I simply don't think that will happen. But IMO and IMO only you will see MANY SSR owners booking into BWV and BCV's.

Did SSR get moved offsite? I thought it was adjacent to DTD. We walked to DTD from SSR many times over the 16 nights we were there last July. Having Ghiradelli and DQ so close by was great, especially for my teens. How could they possibly pick up an entire resort and move it offsite?

I knew you'd come after me, Dave! No, seriously, I do think there are some people who lay on the "Resort Pride" thing a bit thick. It's one thing to constructively criticize a place, but some people just seem to go out of their way to remind others how lucky they themselves are to own at BCV or WLV or wherever. I think that's the sort of thing the OP is referring to. When you've just spent X-thousands of dollars on a place, you don't necessarily want to hear others say things like "getting stuck staying at SSR."

Should we care what others think? Of course not. Does it take a little of the fun out of things? Unfortunately, yes.

I got stuck staying at SSR last summer. I hated it so much, I decided to do my first ever add-on there! :confused3 Seriously, we've owned at OKW since it was called "Disney Vacation Club" and there was not even an inkling of a BCV or a WLV. We have stayed at every DVC resort more than once, but we bypassed add-ons at all those other resorts because SSR is the only one besides OKW that ever appealed to us as owners. The other resorts are nice, just not what we want to stay at for the next 46 years. We are not from the real Saratoga Springs so the themeing to us is fine. Being adjacent to DTD is a definite plus. We vacation for two weeks at a time so we like having a home, not living in a hotel. We enjoy our resort time as much as our park time. The other DVC resorts feel like a hotel to us. OKW is our neighborhood and SSR is a beautiful village.

SSR is a great resort anyway you look at it.

When I first bought into BCV in 2002, that resort was bashed constantly. I suspect once SSR is sold out and they are selling another resort, people will bash that resort too.

To me ALL of the DVC resorts are great. :thumbsup2

no one flys to orlando to spend time just at dd. ok, maybe a few........

many people do fly to orlando to visit the 4 parks.

yes SSR is off site......

to me "on site" means i can walk or ride a boat or monorail to one of the parks. the parks afterall are why I came to orlando.

You can ride a bus from tampa to the parks if you desire.

dd is nice, there are some good bars, and I hear Earls is good.....but I certainly wouldn't plan a week long 5k vacation around dd, nor would most people.

So if you stay at BWV or BCV, you never go to AK or MK, right? You're at an offsite resort for those two parks. Man, you're going to miss out on a lot of fun.

So boats, walking and monorail are not means of transportation to get to a park, but buses and cars are. Hmmmm.

Sorry but the off site thing just cracks me up. That means all the values are off site. All the moderates are off site, AKL is off site, SSR and OKW are offsite.

Plus all the resorts are off site to one park or another. Everything is offsite to AK. All but 5 are off site to MK and all but 3 are off site to Epcot and MGM. (This of course does not include Swan and Dolphin as they aren't owned by Disney and I don't count them).

Now that definition is just plain wrong. "Off site" means it's not on Disney property. It has always meant that. It has nothing to do with the mode of transportation or the proximity to a theme park. SSR is on Disney property, hence it is an onsite resort.
