The reason I do not like recling seats are if I, or anyone else in my row, have to use the restroom it is much more difficult to get past people if someone in front of them has their seat reclined. You are invading their space enough by trying to get to the aisle, it is really bad when you have to lean over to get past the reclined seat.

Well, if someone sits next to me it makes my flight more uncomfortable than if the seat next to me were empty. Therefore, your actions of sitting in the seat next to me are rude and you should leave the plane if there is nowhere else to go on the plane.

But maybe the flight would have been horrible for the gentleman if he didn't recline. So who's comfort has priority? I would say the person using the seat in a manner it was intended to be used, which would be the man in front of you.

And obviously he felt the need to have a reclined seat was more important that having a kick-free flight. I did all I could on my end.

Not the same thing...if the person puts up their armrest then they are personally touching you....if they recline the seat in front of you, their seat is closer to you, they aren't physically touching you.

I was going to say the same thing. I don't want to be touching someone that I don't personally know. When I fly with my family we will usually put the armrest up.

The seats recline---why in the world wouldn't you recline your seat if they are MADE to recline?? I dont care if the person in front of me reclines their seat, I recline mine and go to sleep.

AND I keep it reclined during snacks because I'm hopefully still asleep. I just tell who I'm traveling with "don't wake me up, but get me a snack."

Then you wont mind knees banging the back of the chair or your chair getting banged repeatedly as people get up and try to squeeze past to get to the restroom.

How many times you gotta pee on a trip? If there's little room, you say "excuse me" and apologize to the person in front of you if you're bumping into the seat.

I hate when the person in front of me reclines...and yes, I always have THAT person in front of me too!!!

You always have "THAT" person in front of you, because the seats are made to recline and many people choose to use the option, as they have the right to do.

However, I do not think it is rude of a passenger to do so EXCEPT between the meal/snack/drink is served and when the carts come back around to pick it up. At that point you know everyone has their tables down. I have occasionally heard an annoucement made at that time to put seats up.

Still sleeping here. That's what I do on a plane. I don't recall ever hearing an announcement to put seats up during snack. (Maybe because I'm sleeping? )

If reclining bothers you so much, choose a seat behind the few seats which have no recline, or pay to fly a carrier which has extra leg room, or don't fly a regional jet aircraft, or fly a carrier with clamshell seats, or pay for a seat in C or F. I choose to do so when I am flying on my own money, even though it may cost me many hundreds of dollars more.

These threads as bicker noted are a passive aggressive way to try and insult people for being 'rude' or 'impolite', when they are doing nothing wrong at all.

The seats are designed to be reclined and doing so is not out of line. The seats are not designed to be kicked, and doig so is out of line.

On the planes where the seats come back enough to make you uncomfortable, it is usually possible to jam your knee against it to keep it from coming back. That is what I do.

This is the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard, although it's not new to me. I've heard it a lot, especially on frequent flyer boards.

The seats are designed to recline so people can be more comfortable. The airlines allow you to recline.

When you book a flight, you know that the plane has reclining seats and that passengers are completely within their rights to recline them.

If your legs are too long to be comfortable, or you just have to be able to use your laptop, then consider booking a flight on an airline that has roomier seats or book first class.

Your desire to have room to work on your laptop does not give you the right to try to force the person in front of you to be uncomfortable. It's absolutely absurd.

yes, i am sure that all of us that travel for business will get their company to pay for 1st class fares.

To recline your seat a little is fine, but reclining it the WHOLE WAY, unless you are in business or first-class is totally rude. Yes, the seats were built to recline, but most of the planes used today are 20-25 years old and they used to have fewer seats then and much, much more leg room. (Ask anyone who's been flying for 25-30 years, like me, about the differences in air travel then.) The airline industry started trying to squeeze as many seats in as possible to make more money, at the passenger's travel comfort expense. On my last flight, the guy in front of me reclined the whole way for the entire flight making it impossible for me to use my tray table to work. If he had only reclined 1/2 of the way or even a 3/4 of the way, I would have had no problem. He never even bothered to look behind to see if I had any leg space at all - which I didn't - making my entire flight miserable.

Then complain to the airlines.

Well...color me totally rude then because if I'm on a plane my seat is totally reclined. I think it's totally rude for people to think that it's totally rude to recline a reclining seat!!

I have a bad back. If I sit in the fully upright position for a flight I will be uncomfortable and have a sore back for a day or so. Thank goodness my seat comes with a reclining option so I can be more comfortable.

I find that 90% of the time if I tell the person next to me "excuse me, I need to use the restroom" they get up and move in to the aisle to let me through. I do the same for others. Occasionally someone just starts to squeeze apst without saying anything and giving me the chance to move, which I think is rude (it is okay if the person next to you is asleep and you believe you can get by withotu waking them, but not when they are awake).

Do people tend to not move for you if you ask very often?

First Class is not immune to the reclining seat problem either. I know on USAirways if the person in front of me is fully reclined I have to practically do a limbo to get out to use the restroom. I think it's even harder because the seatbacks are larger.

Actually, I'm platinum elite on Continental and fly first class more often than not. Or in the exit row. I was really just making a point. I can't even remember the last time I flew in regular coach. But when I did, I remember how rude people were just throwing their seats back with no regard to people - and their laptops - behind them. But turning what you said above around... those tray tables are there for a reason too - so people can use them.

If I ever recline - only on longer flights - I recline SLOWLY and usually only a small amount. It's just consideration for your fellow passengers.

I'm Chairman's preferred on U.S Airways and never had a problem with tray tables and reclined seats. I am unable to open my laptop fully on a tray table when the seat is reclined but the tray tables were not designed for laptops. They were designed for food service.

Those passengers are in the last row of the plane. Anyone who flies frequently knows never to sit there as those seats do not recline and in most cases have less leg room so it's apples and oranges.

Well they certainly weren't intended for laptops b/c I'm pretty sure tray tables have been around a lot longer than laptops have.

Given that the basic design (which has hardly changed at all in my lifetime) came about long before laptops existed I do not think a valid argument can be made for them being designed for laptop use
