Pricing a one-way flight for DH to one of several airports. Cincinnati and Louisville both fit our plans perfectly. To fly from Baltimore to Louisville is $245 (not a great fare). This flight makes a connection in Cincinnati. It costs $127 MORE to get off the plane in Cinci. There is definitely something wrong with this picture!
What would happen if DH bought a ticket straight through to Louisville but didn't get back on after it landed in Cinci? Obviously he couldn't check bags but DH can carry his skivvies with him.

It all has to do with routing and competition.

For a one-way flight he technically could get off the plane and not take the connecting flight. If it was a round trip ticket and you did that on the first leg, they would cancel the rest of your flights.

Cincinatti is probably a "hub" for your airline.... usually flights that at some point stop at a hub are cheaper.

Disneymoon - it costs less to get off the plane in Cinci than it does to continue on to Louisville. That's what doesn't make sense to me. I guess it's because the Cinci flight is direct.

I would call the airline and ask what could happen (they don't have to know who you are). I know there is some sort of FAA regulation about getting off before your last stop and I'm not sure if it's that the airline can come back and charge you the higher fare but it's something like that (even if you only have carryons). With the added security, I would check before doing anything that might end up costing you more in the end.

Have you checked Southwest Airlines??

I didn't know what your travel dates were, but to fly from Baltimore to Louisville (you did mean KY?) looks like about $100. There were two airports listed for OH, but Cinn wasn't one of them -- however, they were both about $100 one way/nonstop from Baltimore during July.

Don't know if any of this helps ---- but good luck!

Oops... must have read that backwards! LOL! Perhaps the other is their hub... I just know that when I fly AA in the southern part of the country... even if it's more miles it's cheaper to go through DFW which is one of AA's hubs.

I wondered the same thing, too, recently. A friend warned me that if I tried that, I might not be able to take the return trip. I didn't really get an explanation.

I think it's all about competition, and it rarely seems to make sense.

For example, it is not unusual for me to add a city to a trip and have the price drop. When in one week I fly from Mpls to New Orleans. Then mid-week fly to St. Louis. Then Friday fly St. Louis to Minneapolis, it costs $50 less than a roundtrip Minneapolis to New Orleans.

Well my first thought when I read your thread was: "Well the parachute cost extra money!" :teeth: (Sorry I can't help what kind of mood I am in today!) ;) ;)

Actually I can understand your frustration. Airline pricing drives me crazy. It seems so random at times (make that ALL the time). I was once getting some quotes from Expedia for a Delta flight and while I was looking at prices a screen came up saying that prices were unavailable for a minute because they were being changed! In about 30 seconds the screen came back up with each ticket about $30 more.

I think I'd just stay on the plane forever then.:teeth:

Is that standard procedure? I've never flown before.

It all depends on how busy the route, how fast the ticket sell etc.

I would not advise getting off the plane prior to your scheduled final destination!!! With all the happenings of 9-11 and the added security, it would make for a bad situation when the airline does a head count and notices one missing! Then they will look up names, notice you DH is not there, determine his bags are checked on the plane................I am sure you can figure the rest!! The entire plane would have to be de-planed, all bags taken off and manually checked etc.

It has happened while I worked as a flight attendant in the past and that was way before 9-11!!

Did you try to get a cheaper flight on expedia or orbitz or even priceline????

Good luck

The thing about getting the return flight cancelled rings true. Last Christmas DMIL had some health issues and missed her flight from our hometown to Orlando. She snagged a one way flight the following day(because she already had the return trip paid for from the original travel plans). Fast forward 7 days when it's time to come home and...voila: her return flight is cancelled. The airline explained "...you couldn't be returning because you never left!" The airline was ready to charge her a pretty hefty one way fare back home, when we managed to get it done for the "ticket change" price. I think it was $75...and it was not on the same flight as the rest of the family. This seemed crazy to me, but that's the way it happened.
