Why do you like the nook color?

I'm a big reader and my DD and DH decided to get me a nook. Very thoughtful. They were really thinking of me and it is sweet, but I just had a conversation with my Dsis about how I like to read books the old fashioned way and have no desire for an e-reader. So here I am with this expensive gift trying to like it and understand it and feeling we could put the money to better use. Please tell me the benefits. I really wanted a netbook so I could organize my photos and itunes. I was trying to get an e-book from the library, but that was unsuccesful.:confused3

Advantages I see:
Reading in dark
Reading in car
thousands of books at my fingertips

disadavantages:
I like to ready paper books
can't read in bathtub
the technology is frustrating me

We bought our DD one for Christmas...will let you know what she thinks if I can ever tear her away from it! She is an English Major at Ohio State and has already downloaded quite a bit of Shakespeare!

I'm a technology geek and I love gadgets. This is the number one reason why I haven't bought one of these. My main place to read is in a bubblebath!

Santa brought me one too :) So far I love it but never would have bought one for myself.

Maybe since they bought it for you they could add your photos for you. I haven't tried that out yet.

The technology seems pretty simple so far. I have downloaded a few books, looked up stuff on the internet and played with the crossword puzzle game. I LOVE that you can download several pages of books to see if you like the book. I will love it to take my reading with me when I am running errands and trips. If the library is close by I would bring in your Nook and see if they can help you. We were having trouble downloading books last night and today. After several hours of frustration we turned it off, back on and it worked fine :)

I don't think it will replace paper books for me. I have a stack I haven't read yet, use paperbackswap.com. library etc. You could still have a few paperbacks to read at times.

Good Luck

I would wait a few months and ask about the Nook Color again; I suspect that the answer might be quite a bit different for some portion of Nook Color owners... especially those that have another Nook or a Kindle. The use of e-ink in the regular Nooks and in the Kindles is not just a matter of economy - it provides a much better reading experience (especially for older eyes).

The Nook Color, I think, will end up a novelty in this space. I think folks buying it may be better off saving up for an iPad. JMHO.

I am thinking about returning it, but don't want to hurt their feelings. I think I would like my own small laptop/netbook or and ipad. I have an HTC EVO. The nook color is bigger, but I don't think it is big enough to justify, if that makes sense. ipad is bigger maybe that is really what I should be leaning toward.

I have read here that people put their Nooks and Kindles in a plastic bag and seal them up to read in the tub. :)

I have a regular b/w book. I love it. No it's definitely not the same as holding a real book, but it's not horrible. And yes, I use mine in the tub. I put it in a ziploc.

My mom wanted one for xmas and I specifically didn't get her the color so she could take it to the park and the beach.

I want the color specifically because it is backlit and I can read in bed without a nightlight or other light on-DH likes that idea too. I have also heard about people putting it in a plastic bag for the bathtub/pool, etc. I also like NOT holding a book. Since I started reading on my phone I have found not having to hold a book open is SOOO much easier. I also like that I can read a book on the Nook but also have access to it on my phone so if I always have a book at my fingertips.

I haven't gotten my Nook yet because I hear the colors are coming down in price soon.

I read my Kindle in the bath. For a while I would seal it in a ziplock bag, and then I got too lazy... I all my years of enjoying baths and reading while doing it, I have dropped on book in the water and I was 8 at the time. So I figure the chances are pretty slim. Also, it's not like your swimming in there, and just sitting and reading causes no splashes to worry about.

Unless you have a whirlpool tub that has the bubble feature. Then it splashes around quite a bit. :)

you can buy a special case so you can use it in the bath..

I ended up taking bicker's advice and told my DH I would like to return it and put it towards my birthday gift and get an IPad. He said why wait so I'm posting from my IPad and am super happy!

My DH bought me the original Nook for Christmas and I was thinking of upgrading to a Nook Color but from what I'm reading online, it's not worth $100 more for what I would use it for. What do you think? I would be using it for reading books at home, while waiting for appts and mainly for the summer reading out in the yard. The Nook is good enough for that, right?

I think you should know, as a bath lover, I am quite envious of anyone with this "problem." :upsidedow I dream of having a glorious, large soaker tub with jets one day!

LOVE LOVE LOVE the Color Nook- I got mydaughter one for Christmas and my brother got me the Kindle- I am returning the Kindle and upgrading it to the color nook. Barnes and Nobles are going to release a whole app store in the coming months and you can download apps etc just like an itouch. I like the color nook because you will be able to do so much more with it than just read.

Thank you for this tip! I don't take a lot of baths, but I always have a book when I do. great idea!

Also, it depends on your need. I'm glad you got what you wanted with the iPad. Personally I have a MacBook and an iPhone and more iPods than I want to admit to. I frankly didn't want to pay for an iPad, but the nook color filled a gap. I'm excited to travel and not worry about the weight of all my book and magazines and that I can load movies onto it. I think the iPad is great, but the nook fit my 'needs'

Also, like a previous poster, I wouldn't have bought one for myself, but received it for Christmas. I don't know that I'll ever let go of holding a real book, but this sure is handy. I was in a B&N last night and since you can read any eBook for an hour, I got half way through a book, I wounld't normally have paid for. One more trip and I'll finish it. :D

I have both the Nook and the NookColor. I love the Color. I had the choice of an iPad or a Color. IMO, the iPad is completely overpriced for what it does and with the promise of the Android apps coming, I think it may actually be major competition for the iPad. Again, IMO.

I do still love the original Nook for outdoor reading. :thumbsup2

:thumbsup2 It is a problem I never thought I'd have, lol. Jets are great but those bubbles are even more wonderful! It does splash the water around a lot when you soak and read at the same time though. A definite good splurge & will probably be a selling point for someone when we sell this house!

kenics, you are welcome. I read that tip here and thought it was worth noting. Glad to pass it along.
