Why do some people use their speakerphone in public?

Because my son dropped his Iphone and it now only works on speakerphone. I refuse to buy him yet another phone :)

There was someone who did that on the over night train to florida. Augh. it was annoying and I didn't get any sleep.

I think it would be awful to the people around me if they only heard my side, so I use speaker to ensure they can hear both sides!!!

Totally kidding -- I have no idea why people would do this . . .

Because they are crazy!

My MIL does this and she is the nuttiest person I know.

For those who's phones only work on speaker, do they work with a headset? I would think that would be preferable. I hate talking on the phone when I'm on the train to or from work. My family knows it, so they don't call for long, when I HAVE to be on the phone on the train, I use the headset so I can hear, and hold the microphone from the headset right next to my mouth so people can hear me without having to shout.

My friend and I were walking through Macy's in Ft. Lauderdale and there was this guy talking to his male friend about what a good time he had at the bar the night before. He proceeded, very loudly, to give the other person his cell phone number. Well, my friend CALLED the number and pretended to be a "date" from a previous night. Kept this guy going for about 10 minutes and finally said "No man, you don't know me, but you really shouldn't shout out your phone number in the middle Macy's." Then hung up.

I was having a very hard time holding in my laughter.

An acquaintance (friend of friend situation) said she overheard someone discussing personal financial information on the train and when she got off the train she gave him a note with his SS#.

I can't always hear my phone. Sometimes even on speaker I need to hold it right up to my ear.

Have you tried a headset? Mine is pretty loud. No one would have to be subjected to your conversation that way.

Because they're inconsiderate...
Whenever I hear someone using their cell phone in a public bathroom, I make sure to flush the toilet several times and turn on the hand dryer if there is one.
Ha! I just did this yesterday to the woman talking on her phone in the bathroom. LOL

No idea - there's a woman in our office who does it from her cubicle all the time. :p :p Fortunately, she's part-time, so she's only in a couple days a week, but it's pretty rude to subject a whole section of office space to both sides of your conversation.

I have a few managers of other departments whose offices are behind me and are always on speakerphone calls and don't close their doors. I am on the phone a lot for what I do and it is very hard to hear and concentrate. Unfortunately most of the people also in cubes around me talk loud while on the phone or shout across the room to each other. I try very hard to talk low when making calls or go to someone's desk to not disturb anyone and don't get how people can be so inconsiderate.

I think people like that think they are in a "cone of silence" ala Get Smart tv.show, movie.

We can hear you!
