Why do so many people spell LOSE as LOOSE?

I am not the world's greatest speller, and Lord knows, and most everyone else does too, I have LOTS of typos.

This really bugs me, because it is not one person, it is many people. When they mean lose, they type it as loose. :confused3 Can't they read back and see that the sentence with the word loose makes no sense? I have come to the conclusion that TOO MANY people really believe the word lose has two o's.

DIS spelling lesson of the day:

"My child has a LOOSE tooth, I think he will LOSE it in a couple of days."

I think it is one of those words that is easy to type wrong by mistake even if you know the difference. I hope I haven't mixed them up, because I know the difference, but I can remember at times having to think about it for a minute.
I don't know why that would be, but I can see how if you are typing fast you could do it.

Also a pet peeve of mine. While it could be a typing error, I believe it is more likely that people truly don't realize loose isn't the correct spelling. I think it's because the oo sound is usually correct, as in moo. The ose should sound like a long o as in hose which is the common rule in english. Anyway, that's my two cents.

How about this one: "If they're over there, would you tell them that their car lights are on?"

For me if I do it, it's a typo and I don't always catch it. Things like they're, there and their as well as it's & its bug me more than loose & lose. However if they spell it wrong each and every time then yep, it bugs the heck out of me (and I'm a horrible speller too!!!)

I have to confess, I hate spelling, grammar, typing errors! To me, they are major distraction from whatever message they are trying to convey. I have put down books that I was reading after finding a mistake.

I understand that people make mistakes. Heck, I'm a terrible typist (especially with my fake nails!), but I try to go back and proofread my posts before sending. Yes, sometimes I miss an error, especially if I'm emotional about my subject.

I really believe that, as wonderful as the internet is at fostering communication, a great disservice has been done against the language we use. Too many mistakes have become acceptable, like the examples already stated: lose vs. loose, their vs. they're, your vs. you're, to vs. too. If you try to point out someone's error, you are considered to be snarky or confrontational.

1. they just don't know
2. they just don't care
3. spell check doesn't catch it
4. they want to make you insane

I confess that I never ever check for errors. If there is spell check here I don't know how to use it. I just type away, and then go back and read what I've written, and see some really weird error.

Of course that's the part that people quote 10 times and you have to keep seeing even if you fix it!! :rotfl:

Another commonly mispelled word, especially on the DIS is Souvenirs. I have seen it as souvieneers, souvaneers, souvinears. I could go on all day.

I have to confess, I hate spellinng, grammar, typing errors!

I'm sorry, I just had to... :lmao:

My biggest peeve are extraneous apostrophes. I hate seeing signs for "Apple's 25 cents" or similar. Oh, and when people spell "grammar" as "grammer," especially if they proclaim to be a real stickler about it. Ugh!!! :sad2:

OMG I can't believe I did that! Thank you! I'm so embarrassed. :headache: :rotfl2: Fixed it!

I hae to admit that my biggest weakness are apostrophes. Just never quite mastered them. :confused3

I love you, Marie.

My thing is when people beg for ADVISE instead of ADVICE.

"If you need advice, I'd advise you to call a specialist."

Teachers I love you, but I beg you to use spell check! When a teacher posts with a bunch of errors it always makes me really cringe!!! :scared:

Maybe that's not fair, but there you have it! :)
