Why do so many people spell LOSE as LOOSE?

I can't believe no one has mentioned this one yet:

Your welcome

It's supposed to be You're welcome

That one always drives me nuts.

This is the one that is always on my mind. I have a coworker who does the "your welcome" constantly. I have to delete those emails immediately because they irk me.

I work for a window and door company, and one of the things we need to do with orders is to check the "mark unit," usually the part of the house where the unit will be installed. We have several clients that insist that it's the "dinning" room and not the "dining" room.

I understand that people make mistakes. Heck, I'm a terrible typist (especially with my fake nails!), but I try to go back and proofread my posts before sending. Yes, sometimes I miss an error, especially if I'm emotional about my subject.

I do the same thing. I proofread several times before posting to correct any spelling errors or missing words. I've been doing that since I went to business school in 1994.

I don't know--as soon as you add an "s" to the "oo" it immediately changes the sound: think about caboose--we don't say "cabooze" or noose, etc. how come we don't confuse those words? I think people just REALLY don't know the correct way to spell lose.

The English language (from what I heard) is the hardest language to learn because of all the exceptions to the rules.

You all have hit the major ones that bug me. Another one is using "I seen" in a sentence - spoken or written.

I used to do that when I was younger. I finally got it straight when I was told the word "seen" is not to be used unless the word "have" is before it.

Yesterday, I replied to an email from a co-worker. I read it over several times and never caught my mistake until after it was sent (figures). Instead of typing the word "hear" I typed "here" :headache:

Another set I get confused with (only recently that is) is Affect and Effect. Always got it right in the past, but for some reason, I get them confused now :confused3 .

Sometimes the word is misspelled on purpose. There have been times on the DIS that I have spelled "Gonna" instead of "Going to" because that is the way I say it (NY accent).

Oh, before I forget, here is one that I think will give you a chuckle. One of my teachers in business school gave us this example as to why we should not rely soley on spell check and have someone else proof read your document. She was typing up a letter and spell checked it several times. She printed out a draft copy and asked one of the other teachers to proof read it to make sure she didn't miss anything. Well she did and luckily it was caught. The word that she misspelled was "Assets". She left off the "t" :scared1: :rotfl: .

cybr - affect is a verb, effect is a noun. That's how I remember the difference. The lake effect snow predicted for tomorrow will affect the morning commute.

And I rarely respond to spelling and grammar threads anymore, because I make a typo almost every time.

I have a coworker that does it too and it drives me nuts! I always want respond, "my welcome?"

We all use AIM in the office. This same girl has an away message when she goes to lunch that a portion of it says, "I maybe here" and it's like nails on a chalkboard reading it!
