Why do people......

dislike dressing up. I visit this board at least 4 times a week and I am amazed by the constant threads on how to dress for evening meals. Is it really that hard to read the Disney brouchures and follow the suggestions on how to dress?
Do I need a suit, sport coat, tie etc... is always brought up. I have worn suits, a formal dress military uniform (as have others) and I find that it lends to a nicer atmosphere for all involved. Quit whining and dress up. You might actually like it.

You're going to have some who agree with you, and some (like me) who don't. :teeth:

DH and I have done the Eastern and Western 7-night Magic cruises and both times we "dressed up" for formal night, and our dinner at Palo.

This time, a 4-night Wonder cruise with my parents, we opted to leave the formal clothes at home. DH wore khaki pants and polo shirts (a button down tropical shirt when we were at Parrot Cay) and I wore black slacks and dressy blouses. We were quite comfortable and we noticed most people dressed the same.

We saw a few in shorts/jeans and t-shirts and although I do think that is a bit "too" casual it certainly didn't spoil my dinner. We also saw a few, and I stress the word FEW, men in suits/ties and women in gowns.

I believe "to each their own" and "live and let live." If someone wants to dress to the hilt for dinner, fine...and if another doesn't want to...that's fine too. I am on the cruise to enjoy myself and I'm not going to stress out over what others are wearing. :)

Take a deep breath.....

Not everyone does not enjoy dressings up

Those that do have their own reasons,

I kind of like it myself. But everyone is different.

Personally, I really enjoy dressing up. It's not even about following the rules because I've dressed up on the 4-day cruises which don't even have formal or semi-formal nights. I just think it's fun.

I'm also the type of person who could care less what other people are wearing. Besides, just because someone's wearing jeans, it doesn't exactly mean that they're 'rebelling' against the so-called rules of attire in the dining rooms. Who knows, maybe their luggage was lost or maybe they just couldn't afford anything dressier? People just should not judge other people by simply looking at what they're wearing. There could be a huge host of reasons why they aren't dressed up. We just shouldn't judge anyone.

If you have to bring 4 other kids (who are all under 10) with you,

When you think of what comes with the suit you have to bring (dress shoes),

When you have some more places to go after the cruise,

you may NOT want to dress up too.

We dress up when we go for fine dining; but when going on the cruise, I would rather save the space to bring my kids more sand toys...

Personally, I love to dress for dinner. I would guess that it is not so much the dressing up, but packing extras that are only worn for a little while. I'm a woman, so naturally there will be extra clothes and shoes, probably more that I need.

As for dh and ds, they will be taking sports jackets, appropriate pants, shoes, shirts and ties. Neither one care to dress up, but they will for the formal and semi-formal. For the less formal nights, khaki's and polos.

Also with ds-13, he is growing rapidly and to purchase dress shoes and a jacket that will he will outgrow within days (LOL),
seems kind of wasteful. Please don't tell me to rent a tux, knowing my ds, I would pay the money to rent and then he wouldn't come to dinner. You know how teens can be, sweet as pie one minute and than a barrel of raging hormones the next!

So even though we aren't renting tuxes, they will look nice.

I actually have them talked into matching shirts for the first day of the cruise for our embarkment picture. I'm sure we won't be alone!!

And CRSNDSNY is right about not knowing the situation connected to why someone isn't dressed up. On our 3-night, dh had to wear khaki shorts and a polo to Tritons. I thought I had forgotten dress pants for him. But in my rush and feeling horribly sea sick while I was unpacking, I thought the pants (which were khaki) were a pair of shorts. Spending $80-$100 on a pair of dress pants from the stores on board seemed a little outrageous. He didn't do it on purpose. Of course, I didn't find them until I was packing.

Amen. I don't care what others are wearing. I still don't understand how if the next table is in torn tank tops and cut off jeans, ruin my dinner. I'm there with my family. That's what's important.

Rob1159- I am with you. If you are not the sport coat wearing type, order room service for dinner on those dressier nights! I won't let someone who is obviously underdressed for a formal or semi formal night ruin my night....but you can be sure I will be thinking "can he not read?" or "is he that disrespectful to not bother putting on even a tie?" I do think it is a respect issue when you disregard the recommended dress.

I am not looking foward to hauling my DH's suit with us thru our stay at WDW, but I know when I look at him decked out on formal night, I'll be thinking "now there's a man who looks darn nice...wait, he's with me!"::yes:: (He had better be thinking the same about me, though!)

Personally, I wish I had nothing else to worry about then what other people were wearing. I LOVE to get dressed up also but not while I am on a cruise with my kids. This is a Disney cruise...not the QE2! With the world we life in today it never ceases to amaze me the things people focus on.

For many people, their daily "outfit" is dressy - so when they do go on vacation, they want to "let their hair down" and dress down.

Yes, there are formal nights on the DCL, but if a man or woman chooses to not wear a formal outfit, they paid their fare same as I did and can sit at my table anytime they like!

With that said, I do not want to look at more SKIN than is appropriate, especially some that should be seen only at the beach/pool! But that's me - maybe someone else wouldn't mind seeing it!!!!

And does it really, REALLY make a big difference to me and my happiness if a couple doesn't dress up on formal night?! No.

Rob1559 opined.....
Quit whining and dress up. You might actually like it.

I have worn a suit and tie, or uniform with tie for nearly every working day the past 30 + years.
Because "I" don't enjoy dressing up is not whining. I do it but, please don't presume to know why everyone doesn't wear suits or a tux.
To drive down with 6 of us in a mini van or to fly down, having another week of holidays on top of the cruise and very limited space for everyone it sure does make it that more difficult to get a suit, dress shoes, dress and all that goes with it for a short period.
What anyone else wears is none of my concern, nor is what I wear anyone else's.
Hopefully one day we can all agree on this. :p
Swimsuits and jeans I agree aren't appropriate but "if" someone is wearing that I'm sure not going to get my knickers in a twist about it. I'm on the cruise for a stress free time. Not to add to it :)

Cheers,
Grumbo

btw Rae read that Disney are going to have Shrimp cards, similar to the soda card/mugs to stop the over consumption of shrimps on certain cruises. ;)

Grumbo: I think they may have already stopped the overconsumption of shrimp at the embarkation lunch....

they put spices on it!!! Ick!!!

On our two Magic cruises the shrimp were plain boiled peel 'n eat then chilled, just as they're 'sposed to be....BUT....on our Wonder cruise this week they were spicy!!! YUCK!!! I only ate two and gave the rest to my DH. I was VERY disappointed in them!!! :(

Interesting....they weren't that way on the Wonder last month. Mom ate plenty of them at PC embark. buffet and at BBB during lunch. :(

I can see why people don't dress up....lots of people say you pack too much for a cruise.

With little kids who don't handle their own luggage, airlines charging for bags over the limit, changes of shoes to go from Castaway Cay to formal night to a hike on St. Thomas. A shirt for tropical night, a semi formal for both Palo and semi formal night, plus a formal...

I'm not sure that its any more disrespectful to wear shorts than it is to give people dirty looks for wearing shorts.

If you want to wear a formal and be surrounded by people wearing formals, buy a ticket to a black or white tie charity ball.

(Even Sharon Stone wore a Gap t-shirt to the Oscars - perhaps tacky, but they've never asked me to present).

Well, I'm pretty new to the DCL board, and I have always steered clear of controversial posts, regardless of which board I am on, but I did want to throw in my two cents on this one.

If I were to be invited to a black tie party by a friend or coworker, would it be rude of me to say, "It's a party. I want to be comfortable and let my hair down. I'm going to wear jeans and a nice blouse." I think it would be. I would be ignoring the request of my host. If this same host had said "Black Tie optional" then I feel I would be free to forego the formal attire, but if I choose to attend this party, I am in essence, choosing to follow the "theme" or intent of the party.

I believe the same goes for a formal dinner on a cruise. Whoever plans these dinner themes must obviously intend for people to dress formally, or they would have begun to leave off the "formal" description for this particular dinner. I think for someone to know ahead of time that a dinner is intended by the host to be formal and think that it doesn't apply to them and they will do things the way THEY want to is indicative of today's society (I know I'm going to take some heat for that one) .

I am a stay-at-home mom (okay, I'm not actually home that much) who has never (other than my prom) gotten a chance to dress in a formal gown. I will probably never get invited to any parties around here to wear one and I certainly can't afford to buy tickets to political fundraisers or other black-tie affairs. This cruise that I am hoping and saving to be able to go on in October 2005 will be my chanceto attend a formal event. I am looking forward to dressing up, but if the majority of people in the room are dressed casually, I will feel REALLY conspicuous and overdressed, even though I will have followed through with the requested dress for dinner.

Would I ever be rude and snub someone who didn't dress in a formal fashion? Of course not! I would look forward to the opportunity to get to know someone new. But I would feel a little silly and out of place sitting there in an evening gown while surrounded by people in polo shirts and other "vacation" attire.
I know that things happen..people forget this or luggage gets lost, but I think that's the rare incident. I think most people just have the idea..."I'm on vacation. I'm going to dress any way that I want to" regardless of the intent of the people who planned the dinner.

I expect to get thoroughly flamed for this post, but please be as kind as possible :p

Ialso want to say that I am looking forward to spending the next 17 months here on the cruise boards. I have already learned so much.

I love to dress up for dinner on the cruise - and not just on formal and semi-formal nights. It's just part of the fun for myself and for my husband and DD 9. I can honestly say I'm just too darn self-centered to notice what anyone else in the dining room is wearing. Unless you're at my table I really don't notice. On our first cruise our tablemates didn't dress to the hilt on formal night. The wife wore a gown but the husband was in slacks and I honestly haven't thought of it much until just now, typing this post. I guess I like to wear the gowns, furs, etc because I'm just a kid at heart and still like the play "dress up". We go to many functions where that kind of dress is expected so I have gowns to bring on the ship. But.....think about it. The cruiseline does ask that you dress formally. In writing, in the brochure. And you know that before you purchase the trip. If you can't respect their wishes and get out of your jeans, perhaps you'd prefer another kind of vacation. Khaki pants and hawaiin shirts are fine for men in the dining room and ladies don't need floor length gowns. But a man and woman in torn jeans or denim shorts are just plain disrepectful. And I don't buy for one minute that they don't have the money for anything better. They're on the Disney cruise for heaven's sake and that's pretty darn expensive.

You mus not be carrying all those suitcases with dress up clothes including the suitcase with just shoes in it.
Next time casual only!!!:p :p :p :p :p

I like your thinking, Johnny!!! My Mother is a clotheshorse - took 4 suitcases this past cruise for a 7 nighter - and she still thought she needed more clothes!!

I managed with 2 suitcases between me and my 8 year old, and that included one formal for me and his suit.

GUMBO - If they decide to "card" me for the shrimp, I will sit down by the elevator with a sign that says, "I'll stop singing for your shrimp ration." THAT will work!!!

Hugs!
