*6/8 Update: Our Intentions Were Good, But The Treats Were Better: One Month in Disney (4/21-5/21)

Free treats in WDW are ALWAYS welcome  Glad you enjoyed your first Uncrustable! My son used to eat them when he was little as well and I would sneak them in every now and then.

Sorry the food in Mexico wasn't great, I live in South Texas so rarely go for Mexican while on vacation b/c we eat so much of it at home. I think the last time I tried something in the Mexico pavilion I was also disappointed!

I love seeing all the pics you have shared of the topiaries :goodvibes
I have never been to Epcot during F&G so would love to see them in person one day. Also, good to know that so many rides offer single rider as I am hoping to not spend the $$ on individual LL's!

That’s funny about the Uncrustables. My kids also used to have them and I have never tried one. So great that you got to see baby martins!
I ❤️ Guardians 45 min is not a long wait at all!
I’m not a big dole whip fan. I mean I like them but don’t really go out of my way for one. The topiaries are so fantastic! Um…. did I know there was a single rider for Remy!!!?? 🤦🏻‍♀️
Never been to Shiki- Sai looking forward to hearing about it.

4/23 Spending the Day in Our Favorite Park

Even though we thought it might be busy during Easter week, we just had to start our day at Epcot, our favorite park. We couldn’t wait to see all the flowers and topiaries. Not only is Epcot our favorite park, the Flower & Garden Festival is our favorite festival (although we have yet to experience Food & Wine or Festival of the Arts).

Being off-site guests, we weren’t eligible for early entry so we arrived about 8:40. Off-site guests were allowed in and held to the left of Spaceship Earth. As we made our way there, we stopped to admire the new Moana 2 topiary at the entrance.

AD_4nXfDEx_YctGwAsV-V0Jjf3xM5KUEAR6t2piXbtWwx__elCQZmQ_7m_6WJweP1-OCRTBOZZqLXH7u1fx24kqs14LvZ6my6UPdUV0VCJlTx2EypnavvdKHxwzFxF1KxXq0qF-slaw7mA

Since we were not planning on joining the mad rush to Guardians of the Galaxy, we decided to wait next to the line for Spaceship Earth. Cast Members dropped the rope at 8:55 and we headed under Spaceship Earth and straight for the Land pavilion.

I arrived at Soarin’ at 9:03 with a posted wait of 10 minutes. I was on the ride in under 8 minutes. We then rode Living with the Land and Journey into Imagination with Figment with no lines. We took a few photos of the beautiful topiaries and flowers as we headed to the World Showcase.

The Lion King topiary is always a favorite.

I loved this new garden based on the emotions of Inside Out 2. Each emotion had plants and flowers suited to their personality.

This is so gorgeous! I told DH I think he should put a pond in our yard and attempt this.

We also witnessed the return of the Phineas and Ferb topiaries. We are actually not familiar with these characters, as our sons had outgrown cartoons by the time the show aired but people seemed pretty excited to see the topiaries.

AD_4nXehLC_ceoRRxAzZ5zvNl7ZKGV8opiW3LH4OVI3sQSTeswio3ldPauA_89gziJbHivbaFCGG3KryBRve62nXLvp7UQqDULTFuQ3zppatUYszNIjB-BaJuMNbd7EIMb-uhvTCyr2a

We just love that everywhere we turned there were gorgeous flower displays and topiaries. We love Encanto!

After admiring some of the displays, we were hoping to ride Frozen so I pulled up the Touringplans Lines app and saw a 26 minute wait. My Disney Experience showed the wait to be 40 minutes. Having found the Lines app to be much more accurate in the past than MDE, we decided to make our way to Norway to ride. As we approached the ride, it looked to us to be much longer than a 26 minute wait but we decided to wait anyhow. Turns out MDE was exactly accurate, we waited 40 minutes. What’s interesting is that throughout our trip this time we found MDE’s wait times to be far more accurate than the Lines app. I have never found that to be the case in the past. I still appreciate the ride suggestions in the Lines app to “ride now”, “ride any time” or “wait to ride” but eventually we just started trusting the MDE wait times as the Lines app always seemed to underpredict. Since we usually only ride Frozen with a Lightning Lane, we actually didn’t mind our 40 minute wait as it allowed us to enjoy the sites in the regular queue. We especially liked seeing Oaken through the sauna window.

After riding Frozen, we decided to get an early lunch and headed to La Cantina. We opted to share the Arroz Bowl with Grilled Chicken: Rice bowl topped with grilled chicken, corn, spicy tomato salsa, pickled onions, queso fresco and cilantro

AD_4nXeqQ_H6CySqIc2Kvth7Q-ZlpTJfzgxoQ4HkIzkE2gH7EbegZUpAtYbVrU4kaV3hHpF-Ipmlo1qMp4tErhFp9s1cMjqo3SdYeCOR2iqMZciQPnKSqCJ07wEtEsnQcwNgi3kukEQ7Lw

I liked the added flavor from the spicy tomato salsa, pickled red onion and cilantro but overall this dish was just okay. We thought it was good for quick service park food, but nothing we would make a point to get again.

We also shared an order of guacamole and chips.

AD_4nXesTYuJZfKnA024ohFV7Y84q4XFpc67mtBt4SU3AMad7TvilWM-FpvnlTpPGGMljdna5dYAy0ndlNQcpPJ5aI1ks3RTzFl97PESf35YN5TMkU3ik-73-K7atEDfoPzfIdNJwZqZSQ

This was not great. It really needed more flavor. It was basically mashed avocado with diced tomato on top. The chips also were not particularly fresh. Overall, we gave our lunch at La Cantina a C. It was fine but not memorable.

Feeling a little unsatisfied, we headed back to Norway to get dessert from the Kringla Bakeri. Since we’ve eaten the school bread many times and loved it, we decided to try something new. Our plan was to share a Troll Horn.

AD_4nXdAOdCT2PA8YbTaHKmD4xpLRS8w0qvymZVd4pbvfrjKQ2sAFXYy_Z--NPrfW-JIiYyp3FCQ1RBxdGW5URi3YJOJQg7BdmZXWfEO4KcvnsJteJ1fBHNIXY9Tjk53qp5qWh6nnSDavg

We enjoyed this a lot. The outside pastry was fresh and crisp and the chocolate filling was very tasty. It was exactly as we expected. We gave it a B+.

Since the size of the troll horn seemed a little small for a shared dessert, we made an impulse buy of another treat we have never tried from the Kringla Bakeri, the Triple Chocolate Chip Cookie.

AD_4nXdWSNLKMY0yT-EEz5Flc6A-Cf2uixqmEo9uqCKkBGIE4chjlYoRHXbZXs37JT1XJ_PUGicghqEOM6QvodM40VXDToi2iynv8_r7OPxF67xbtI_hvsnKTIl2sE9LI_0_HXhNfTFP5Q

Oh my goodness! This cookie is fantastic! My DH took the first bite and looked at me with huge eyes. He said, “I won’t say anything until you taste it.” I didn’t know what to think and then I bit into it! Wow, there is so much flavor in this chocolate chip cookie! It has a slight hint of cinnamon and tons of chocolate chips. It is crispy on the outside and softer on the inside. We gave this an A+ and it rocketed to the number 1 spot on our dessert list. Did it stay there? You’ll have to wait and see. This was one impulse buy we do not regret! We love the schoolbread but I don’t think we’ll ever be able to go to Kringla and not get the cookie (too).

After dessert we returned to Mexico and rode the Gran Fiesta Tour with the Three Caballeros ride which had recently re-opened after some upgrades. I thought the attraction was definitely improved with better sound, video quality, and lighting. I don’t know if I just didn’t notice them before but I thought I saw one or two new animatronics too.

Up next..a free treat at Epcot and an interesting educational offering.

I couldn’t figure out how to reply without your whole section showing, I wanted to grab the chocolate chip cookie picture. We’re going to have to try that next trip. We’ve never tried the chocolate chip cookie from Norway either. Our last few trips, Scott (my husband) has been loving the Mickey Mouse shaped chocolate chip cookies with chocolate dipped ears, but since Chocolate Chip is his favorite cookie, I’ll have to show him this one.

Thank you for all the work you put into the report; it’s Iike being there with you

Free treats in WDW are ALWAYS welcome  Glad you enjoyed your first Uncrustable! My son used to eat them when he was little as well and I would sneak them in every now and then.
Now we wish we had! We didn't know what we were missing!
Sorry the food in Mexico wasn't great, I live in South Texas so rarely go for Mexican while on vacation b/c we eat so much of it at home. I think the last time I tried something in the Mexico pavilion I was also disappointed!
The closest to authentic Mexican we've had was in Albuquerque. So good! We've never been to Texas though.
I love seeing all the pics you have shared of the topiaries :goodvibes
I have never been to Epcot during F&G so would love to see them in person one day. Also, good to know that so many rides offer single rider as I am hoping to not spend the $$ on individual LL's!
Epcot is just so beautiful lduring F&G, you should check it out sometime! We definitely saved money on LLs by using single rider.
That’s funny about the Uncrustables. My kids also used to have them and I have never tried one.
That is funny! Guess we're not alone.
So great that you got to see baby martins!
It was really cool.
I ❤️ Guardians 45 min is not a long wait at all!
Guardians is my favorite attraction of all time, including those at Hershey Park, Universal, Cedar Point, Six Flags, Kings Dominion, and Busch Gardens. So unique and fun!
I’m not a big dole whip fan. I mean I like them but don’t really go out of my way for one.
That's how we feel too. They're good but not a "must get every trip".
The topiaries are so fantastic! Um…. did I know there was a single rider for Remy!!!?? 🤦🏻‍♀️
It is a recent development!
Never been to Shiki- Sai looking forward to hearing about it.
Coming up hopefully tomorrow night! We're headed to Roger Williams Zoo tomorrow morning.
DH loved the Mickey one too when he tried it on our previous trip. Unfortunately they can be stale though sometimes. If you're husband is a chocolate chip fan he absolutely must try this cookie!
Thank you for all the work you put into the report; it’s Iike being there with you
Thank you so much! ❤️ Writing about it helps me to enjoy it all over again!

Well I will be checking out that single rider line in July!
We used to have a RWP zoo membership when the boys were little!
We had a wonderful day today at the zoo and then walked the Fall River waterfront, a great day! Trip update coming up next...

4/23 Trying Shiki-Sai for the First Time

As we prepared for this trip, I researched all the menus trying to find restaurants with some healthy options. We watched more than one glowing review of Shiki-Sai on YouTube and thought there were a few healthier options we could try so I booked this as our first ADR of the trip.

We checked in for our ADR a few minutes early at the hostess desk. Unfortunately the hostess couldn’t find our reservation. The problem was that our last name can also be a first name so it really confused her when I gave my name. It took a bit of explaining but she finally found our reservation and we were seated quite quickly after that.

My first observation was how small the dining area was. It felt like we were sitting in a lounge. It was really pretty though and we were given a window seat with a great view.

DH and I don’t eat sushi but found several items on the menu that we wanted to try. We were under the impression that an izakaya restaurant is similar to a tapas style restaurant where we could order a few things then a few more, etc. We placed our order for the two items I had planned to order initially, the eggplant with miso sauce and kushi assorted. Our server also highly recommended the Beef Udon so we added that to our initial order as well.

Here is the Eggplant dish:
AD_4nXdTLaa7OFrpAxk9YjfzWyQaEGJ2tjI-Yvksp_xoaXgsCNvngoyUUoNbVHko-xJ2Mlu9x6nZl9sDnO-GUX7aAgh3m9LHfED5cuah4hsqUGgB4FcPPBwf0dqC7rbRhKoqKYNv71Uk5A

These were pretty small but had a lot of flavor from the miso sauce. We enjoyed them and were off to a good start. DH was struggling with his chopsticks so you can see a “how to use chopsticks” tutorial on his phone, haha! Eventually he gave up and used his fork.

Kushi Assorted: Six of our signature skewers featuring two each of beef, chicken, and shrimp
AD_4nXf3TRuP6rgLGvk2igG-yGHz5fT4PDQeSTVY0--Idk1VovA9IEmvagGcMpwmGcveTSB2SITbnVt1dl21W1YUo-LiGRQPEJjFTPoaytpMS75ISAFaWtXqPkPVY8o5qTJmNzmIy1m4Kg

Sadly, these looked way better than they tasted. The shrimp was very fishy, the chicken was dried out, and the beef was super chewy. It wasn’t enjoyable eating them.

Lastly, we split the Beef Udon dish.
AD_4nXc4t6jX6tTgZAhdaDuuxrqFM09MbM9tmQF0AyS-CwS_23ht4qTh2htqlUIggbx_SCKMme2vgRxsMeL1NMz_xoiGh_t2Rs0E1tBCRpRuQR40gEEXsx1qerC64YKKqp-Ga5QSMXhBkQ

We didn’t care for this at all. It really lacked flavor and had a slimy texture. It was a huge miss for us. We felt like it wasn’t any better than food court food.

Our service also wasn’t great. We didn’t really see the server again after we placed our order. Once we finished our three items, she came over with the bill. She never asked if we wanted anything else. Originally we had planned on trying a couple more items but considering that we only liked the eggplant, we decided it was just as well, paid the bill and left.

If you are surprised by this review, I have to say I was shocked at how bad it was. I anticipated loving it and in fact had already booked another ADR for when our sons joined us in May. DS-28 is a huge fan of sushi and I thought he would love the restaurant. As soon as we left, the first thing I did was cancel our future ADR for the portion of our trip with our sons.

The eggplant and view saved it from getting a “D” on our list. We gave it a C and it came in dead last on our dinner ranking, did anything else score worse? You’ll have to keep reading…

Feeling very unsatisfied by our highly anticipated meal, we decided we needed a sweet treat to compensate. We headed to Regal Eagle to try a new to us treat: the ‘Smore Brownie

AD_4nXdNEC6ceVfZ_yKm6NkfDDYWNw-Ul5EdqHfnjbbrGGDv4Y5XqRD-8zGmaZ0vAbQtrQXP9gNTq_MpLKk_vT-XKb7FckS6JfMauPTLaPLrZmNCAcO4YbqY57hzBA8TELRXX37uG6u10Q

This was very good, thankfully! It had a nice thick graham cracker crust and a tasty marshmallow topping that elevated a pretty standard brownie. We gave it a B.

It wasn’t a huge dessert, so we opted to try a second treat! We stopped by the Jardin de Fiestas booth and purchased the Choco-Flan: Layered traditional Mexican Flan and Chocolate Cake with Toasted Walnuts.

AD_4nXfiAnC5puof7-kojddf0o8xYibWqFL2bdi7oAQRADU0qelD-T8IBwfdISSOtDuoqUnWkB2RLMCkYNAoE-DoumWuLLS-zZIcDI_v8d7TIGWjZ3FHsvfIBLWj2VmPW94pa9oZSoyU_Q

This was also very good. The chocolate cake was very moist and the walnuts on the top provided a great contrast to the texture of the flan, which had a delicious flavor. We gave this a B+. It was wonderful to end the night on a positive note!

Edit to add: total steps: 22033

Up next..spending the day at Cocoa Beach.

Oh shoot! I was hoping you liked this place. Andi and I have it on our list for our late summer trip! We might have to do the sushi place in the Swan, instead I have heard really good reviews for that one. Andi and I really liked Tokyo Dining the former place before Shikki-Sai
The desserts look yummy!

It may have been an off night and we didn't try the sushi but I have heard wonderful things about the sushi at Kimonos. I was hoping my DS-28 found time to get sushi at Kimonos but we ran out of time. We never tried Tokyo Dining. If you and Andi decide to try either one, I'll be interested to hear your review.

4/24 Cocoa Beach Day
We awoke early and drove out to Cocoa Beach. We wanted to ensure a parking spot in the Lori Wilson parking lot. As we arrived there were plenty of spots so we parked and brought our stuff down to the beach. DH had bought me a new beach umbrella for my birthday and I had bought us new beach chairs for Christmas. We were so excited to try out our new stuff!

We both read our books and took quick dips in the water. The beach wasn’t too crowded and there was plenty of sunshine. It was a beautiful and relaxing day. In the afternoon we packed up and then took a long walk down the beach to make sure we got our steps in for the day.

After our walk we drove to the Cocoa Beach Fish Camp for dinner. We ate here last year and really enjoyed it so we decided to try it again. It was half-price wing night so we placed an order for wings with cajun chipotle BBQ.

AD_4nXc5G4BTH7b52nFtyx9FRR9Db0EWhiCiN6p8L8RMelvCf7c1iOFJF34csWf9GM9u6HcDDUxnDNv_kxVJZ8CFedGe1FOvlT-rfiMnNzxmXu5H2yWXLS5S7SgnpoXQyFJtkIdKq4ju

These were just okay. They weren’t crispy enough for our tastes.

We also shared an order of jambalaya: A classic camp cajun dish. With chicken, andouille sausage and blackened shrimp smothered in cajun spice and tossed in rice

AD_4nXfPB21mND5bwBlpspCQFnYNqHN3DnIjEvswIwaZwLW2PouqaH2jzk_SvQtkR5xCHD5vnLUXgw537TnvDlPk9uf8cxf5e0KwpZx7_-8SBTYvXMXPPsxp130vyM0-L1kGQ7BHmUrUhg

We ordered this last year too and it was just as delicious as we remembered it! It is not tomato-based like Sassagoula so it’s a little more dry but the cajun seasoning is excellent. It is definitely spicier than Sassagoula and probably more authentic. The shrimp was perfectly cooked and seasoned. There was lots of sausage and chicken as well. It is the best jambalaya we have tried so far.

For dessert we drove down to Fat Donkey Ice Cream & Fine Desserts.

We each got 2 scoops of ice cream in a dish. I ordered Butterscotch Bomb and Calypso Crunch.

This is such high quality premium ice cream. The flavors are so unique and the ice cream itself is creamy and delicious. We gave Fat Donkey Ice Cream an A.

After our satisfying meal and dessert, we made the drive back to our hotel. We made it back in time to watch the NFL Draft on TV. DS-28 is a huge fan of the draft, studying all the stats and doing mock drafts in anticipation. Draft Night is almost bigger than the Superbowl to him. That night he and DS-26 were having a watch party at DS-28’s apartment so we called them and had a remote viewing party.

At 9:50 that night there was a Falcon rocket launch from Cape Canaveral. One of the reasons we requested the top floor at the Residence Inn is that it is the perfect viewpoint to see rocket launches. It’s so cool to be able to watch from the comfort of our room.

It was a fun end to another great day.

Love the scavenger hunt! I didn’t realize there was one for Spike. F&G is definitely a favorite for us and we didn’t get to go this year. Thank you for bringing us along!

Too bad about Shiki- Sai. Gee bad food and service!!! That’s terrible. I find it extremely odd that there aren’t many ice cream shops around central Florida. There are so many good homemade ones around my house. And it’s Florida….. ice cream weather year round! 🤣
The beach is also my happy place along with Disney of course. DH is not a beach person but will go with me a couple times a year….usually in Florida. We go to New Smyrna beach since that is closer to us in FL. I’ve been to Cocoa beach once with my parents and sister on one family trip. The jambalaya looks delicious maybe we’ll need to take a trip out there soon.
The NFL draft is huge in my house as well. DH has Pats season tickets. Very cool getting to see the launch.
Looking forward to what’s next.

You picked exactly the two ice cream flavors I would have!
You obviously have great taste!

We love the scavenger hunts too. They make us slow down and look around. We did the Olaf one last December and DH found almost all of them before me. This time I was much better at finding Spike than he was.

Oh...tell me where you go near you! We used to like Kathy's in Assonet but it's been gone for years. Our favorite right now is Tom & Jimmy's in Middleboro. DH keeps hinting we should go there soon but we're trying to be good!

DH hasn't been a beach person either but lately has enjoyed them more. Growing up, my parents had a summer house on Sconticut Neck in Fairhaven so I spent my summers at the beach. Can't imagine not being near an ocean. We'll have to check out New Smyrna sometime.

Really hoping Vrabel turns the Pats around this year!
Very cool getting to see the launch.
Looking forward to what’s next.
Thanks!

I think the best ice cream is Somerset Creamery!!!
The Ice Cream Barn is also good but usually packed.
Also Simcock Farms- this one not even a mile from my house and we never go there. 🤣 I don’t think they make their own which if funny bc it’s on a farm so most people think it’s homemade.
You’ll just need to try all 3 and judge for yourself.
