Why Do People Get $100 Bills?

Normally, I only get $100 bills when I win a jackpot at the casino. They are not going to count out a jackpot in smaller bills. It's actually kind of fun to get them. The last time I won, they gave me $2500 in $100 bills. Cool! By the way, I had not problem spending them.

We went to a McDonalds that wouldn't take a $100 bill. Making change wasn't the issue because it was during a busy lunch rush.

We ended up leaving (after waiting in line) and trying another fast food place down the road that took it without hesitation.

Just because it was busy when you went in doesn't mean that if they give the change of a $100 bill to you and 9 other people at rush hour, ($1000 in change) that they won't be short change at 7pm.

These places aren't banks. They keep a reasonable amount of change for a reasonable day, hoping to GET more change throughout the day, not have it go OUT the door with 10-20 people.

A $100 bill is 50 cheeseburgers. So 50 other people can't get a cheeseburger at 7pm because McDonalds doesn't have change and they don't have the exact amount either. I bet those people would "walk out to another fast food place down the road that has change without hesitation."

I really don't get why you people are so shortsighted that you fail to think beyond your own transaction? :confused3

I would never try to break a $100 bill at a small mom 'n pop place early in the morning. Later in the day, I would at least ask if it was possible before I tried to. Bigger stores, restaurants, no problem. But small places many times don't have that much change to give out so early in the shift.

Yes, I always ask first, even at larger stores. A cashier could have just started the late shift, having a new cash drawer and just not have the change.

Although it's rare when I have one, I do like the way it looks in my wallet! :cool2:

I tend to hold on to the money longer if the bill is larger. I know...weird.:3dglasses

I like having hundred dollar bills rather than a bunch of 20's. I always keep 1- 100.00 tucked in the corner of my wallet for an emergancy. The only place that it was ever an issue using one is 7-11 and since I wil only go in that place once a year or so and they take debit cards so I will just use that it really isn't an issue. I just went to the bank to get money for the first half property taxes last week and I asked for 40- 100.00 bills - no way did I want to have to carry around all that money in 20's!! It was much easier for the tax office too when they had to count them out!

I do the same thing as you...I always keep an "emergency hundred" tucked away in my wallet! It's not really just for "emergencies" per se-for example if I find myself at Target and something I have been watching goes on sale, I use it for that. Or if I drop my dd at sports practice I may run to the supermarket, I don't have to stop for cash on the way. But these are times when I'm spending at least $75 so it's okay to use the hundred.
That said, I would never try to buy a cup of coffee and pay with a hundred dollar bill. I wouldn't use it at a yard sale etc.

See now this is why I go to the mom and pop place for my coffee and not Starbucks. Sometimes she can't break my $20 (5 a.m. on a Monday) so she just tells me to pay her tomorrow. Sure enough on Tuesday I ensure that I have change and give her the money the next day. :)

Now I have another excuse not to drink that wicked expensive coffee!!! :goodvibes

I think she wanted me to tell her to take the stuff for free, that I couldn't break the $100. She seemed disappointed that I was able to get the change for her.

::yes:: I think that's exactly what she wanted. I wonder how many times that works for her?

I've had very few places refuse to take $100.

I get $100, because I'm a control freak about money and I keep a certain amount in cash on hand and in my SD Box. Hundreds take up less room. LOL

On vacation I take $100's and then cash them as needed. If I took all my cash in $5's I might have to go up a cup size.:rotfl: That's actually not a bad idea....

(and for those of you going gross. I have a money holder that hooks to a bra strap so you can hide your money under your shirt anchored near the girls, I'm not keeping singles and loose change in there, my name's not Bunny and my work does not involve poles)

now, the businesses who put up the cc signs which say please use cash for transactins under $10, that is illegal - they have to accept your cc no matter the purchase...(well here in FL anyway)

Not illegal, just against the contract with the credit card company. Visa, Mastercard, Discover (Novus) and AMEX all require in their contracts as part of accepting their cards that all transactions, regardless of amount, must be accepted.

If a merchant refuses to accept a card due to the dollar amount of the transaction, a person can report the merchant to the card issuer and usually the merchant will get a warning, and if too many complaints are received, can lose their ability to accept any cards.

Another contract rule that is often forgotten is that when using a card for purchases, as long as the card is signed (cards not signed are technically invalid), the merchant cannot request additional identification of the user, the card and the individuals signature on the receipt or pin pad is the verification required or needed.

I despise $100 bills - but I love the one that is in my purse right now.

Someone obviously gave it to me by mistake. I have no clue where it came from. I've been in multiple cities in the past month. I never get $100 bills nor do I deal with cash for anything over $20.

I was shocked when I found it loose in my purse!!!

I got stuck with three $100 dollar bills last year. I always ask for $20s when cashing a check, but I guess I didn't that day.

The first two weren't hard to part with; I had to use them to pay for school books. The last one was a beast to get rid of. Stores kept refusing them, no matter how large the purchase. I'm assuming the problem was that they were uncomfortable taking a bill that large from a teenager (assuming it was a fake). I, eventually, got rid of it at a Starbucks.

I don't walk around with a lot of cash on me (just don't feel comfortable), so it was also a pain to have that $100 (which was basically worthless) and smaller bills on me that added up to more money than I would ever carry under normal circumstances.

I don't carry them but I do collect them. They take up less space.

I've never had an establishment refuse to take a $100 bill - even in the "one horse town" at the lake..:confused3

If they did, I just wouldn't do business with them..

And I always have hundreds on trips and such - along with traveler's checks; debit cards; etc..
