Why do all Florida Homes have Screened In Pools?

At least that's what I noticed in the Orlando area driving from the airport to WDW and when we drove to the Space Coast. I've asked a couple of people while down in WDW and either they didn't know, to keep the mosquitos and bugs out and the one that the towncar drive told me that she seemed very very sure of herself was that the UV Rays were much stronger in Florida due to the proximity to the equator and the higher incidence of skin cancer was the cause for having your pool screened in. One thing I noticed was that quite a few people that have homes with pools had no fence and maybe that was why but then I have seen others that have fences completely around there yards and still have the screens. So.... there must be a real reason for it and I was hoping that one of you Florida residents could answer this burning question for me. :sunny:

We had relatives there. They were trying to keep out gators!

I'd go with the MOSQUITOS!!! (and all the other stuff too!))

the one year we couldn't even leave from our front door it was COVERED! in Mosquitos! yeck!

No gators in my neighborhood--they stay down the road a couple miles and a hundred feet lower in elevation. But we have snakes and bugs and whatever.

I don't have a pool, but our lanai is screened, and it keeps the bugs away. Last night around 8:00 I was sitting on the lanai using my laptop (I LOVE WiFi!) enjoying the warm summer night air. No way I could have done that without the screen, I would ahve been eaten alive!

We live no where near gators. Ours is screened for the above mentioned bugs and debris. We pay our pool service less money because we have a screened patio. I wanted to take our screen off, so the water will warm quicker, but it's not worth the mosquito bites!

It's mainly to keep the bugs, lizards and leaves out. It is not a great deterrent for gators because when they are hot and their water source is dried up, they make their way into the neighborhood pools. At least once a year we see a photo in the newspaper of one lying at the bottom of someone's pool, having broken through the screen.

Aside from the above mentioned reasons, it also keeps the water cooler. Not so great in the winter and early spring, but helpful come August, when the water would be too warm to be refreshing.

The folks I know around here that have one are more concerned with leaves and bugs. I don't have a pool, but keeping debris out of my fountain is a major task. (but worth it)

We rented a poolhouse in Orlando last month. My son was floating on his back in the pool and was just AMAZED at how many mosquitos DIED on the top of the screen! As for the snakes, we had on on our first day who was trying to find a way out!! :earseek: Needless to say we helped him find his way out! The management company told me it's a DAILY call! :teeth:

The screened in area around pool is called a "lanai" and they are to keep the leaves out of the pool - that really helps with pool maintenance. Also they keep out assorted bugs like mosquitos, etc., and critters like gators, snakes, iguanas. A lot of homes do not have fences due to strict homeowner rules that do not allow fences in the neighborhood but the screened lanais stop kids from just wandering in the backyard and falling in pool.

All of the above!

You'd actually be surprised how the screen actually works to provide a little shade and cut down on the pool water getting so hot. And being able to swim at night is a great thing - without being bothered by bugs.

I sure wish we had them here in Texas!

We asked our pool guy, and he said that it is much more expensive here because no one does it around here, so all the parts and labor would cost more.....I would really like one though!

Howdy, neighbor! :wave2: I'm in Clear Lake!!! That answers my question about why we don't see them in Texas - we have the bugs, mosquitos, lizards and the occasional snake, too...hmm, maybe we can start a trend! :)

Hi! Back at ya'! :wave2: You are just on the other side of I-45 from me!

Yes! I think that would be wonderful idea! If someone would just start a business, I think they would make good money around here. It would really cut down on the pool's up-keep. And, I'm all for that!! :sunny:

Yup, the screens keep all those things out, and pets in. Our cats love our lanai and gives us peace of mind they will not get out and tangle with other critters.

We do have gators up here, but they mostly stay in and around the ponds. I can't understand why people pay more to have gators and water moccasins in their back yards. We've seen a pretty big gator sunning itself between a pond and someone's lanai.

Some people have about knee-high solid panels installed around the bottom of the screening. That should keep the gators from breaking through the screen.

The screens are great (very few bugs/leaves/etc)...also I know where i live by law you have to have a fence around the pool and the screen is a great way to do that without killing the view...Also I once had a pool in florida without the screen, its a lot harder to control the PH of the pool, the dumb thing kept turning green....
