Why Casey Anthony?

OK, I had to chuckle. Yes, some people like knitting, and some like murder trials. ;) J/K.

I think that's true, though! I think for some people, the thrill of putting the puzzle together overshadows the fact that a little girl is dead. You lose sight of the reality of the situation sometimes and focus on put the puzzle pieces in the right spot.

Because of the overabundance of information that is available, it turns into a game. People will throw a fit on these boards because of the information people share on Facebook, but here we have a LAW that 911 tapes are public record?! (If I'm understanding that right.)

Not only that, I'm sure there are people being called as witnesses who don't want their names and faces plastered all over the TV. I can't imagine being a witness in a televised trial. I think I would need deep, intense, long-term therapy to deal with that. I'm an intensely private person (who chooses what to share with my friends online). Look at how many lives are affected by this one death.

On the other hand, if it makes you feel any better, I can't knit either :upsidedow

i know some people on here and a lot of the media talk about how "stone faced" she is in court but i wonder how she should look.

if she smiles at someones comment she gets slammed if she cries she gets slammed if she has no expression she gets slammed.

i don't think she can do anything facial without being slammed for it.

i personally don't think her reactions mean a hill of beans since she'll just "preform" for what ever situation needed.

the media will continue to talk about how stone faced she is but rally who cares - she wont change so i think the nancy's and others should just move on from it

Why not Casey Anthony?

Anyone not interested in the story can just tune it out. I've managed to not let it invade my every waking moment. I hear the blurb Kerry Sanders does each morning on The Today Show and that's it.

Little girl goes missing.

Nancy Grace picks up the story.

Cindy Anthony calls police to say Caylee has been missing for 31 days. She also says Casey said the nanny kidnapped Caylee.

Nancy Grace grabs onto story like a hungry pitbull and features it every night for months.

I don't think it was a matter of not caring or not being interested... I think the question is more along the lines of "what about the others?"

This article has some interesting statistics....

http://www.capitolhillblue.com/artman/publish/article_7711.shtml

"For a missing child to attract widespread publicity and improve the odds of being found, it helps if the child is white, wealthy, cute and under 12.

Experts agree that whites account for only half of the nation's missing children. But white children were the subjects of more than two-thirds of the dispatches appearing on the Associated Press' national wire during the last five years and for three-quarters of missing-children coverage on CNN, according to a first-of-its-kind study by Scripps Howard News Service."

:thumbsup2

OK, I had to chuckle. Yes, some people like knitting, and some like murder trials. ;) J/K. But honestly, I've always been interested in legal cases. Three of my favorite classes in college were law classes. I LOVE puzzles, and it's like putting together the pieces of a puzzle, and hopefully, for ME, the solution (verdict) is what I believe it to be. That's how I ended up with a degree and career I hated...loved the "puzzle" nature of accounting, hated the business world. Oh well.

But I do need to learn to knit. :teeth:

Knitting is a puzzle. :goodvibes

By crazy I mean Cindy saying the smell in the car was pizza and thinking Caylee was alive even after they found her body and George spraying protesters with his hose. Just a few examples in the 3 years worth of crazy though I do agree that George is the calmer of the two.

Yah, I remember when she said the smell in the car was pizza. I think she was in denial. She did not want to believe that Caylee was dead, nor that Casey could have killed her. That poor woman. The hell she must have been going through and is still going through.

I still don't think that George and Cindy were crazy. Probably just out of their minds with how to deal with the whole situation.

I don't think it was a matter of not caring or not being interested... I think the question is more along the lines of "what about the others?"

There a staggering number of missing children's stories out there, true. And I would imagine each on has a unique set of circumstances that would make each case intriguing. Why is this case in the spotlight? I don't know. But if it wasn't her, it'd be another one and the same question would be posed.

Also, people like to see the bad guy strung up, and I bet lots of people are waiting to see Casey strung up.

I agree about the Sunshine Law. That is what kept my interest. I have followed the case since Day 31. Everytime there was a "doc dump" I was there reading the thousands of pages of evidence. Watching every jail video and reading depositions. Being able to have cameras in at the hearings helped throughout the years.

Plus the Anthony's seem like the average American family. Most of us could relate in someway to them.

Keeping this related to Disney... they are in Orlando. I drove by their house this week last year and when we went down the road to turn around, George was now out of the house. Did he ever glare at us. All we did was drive by but I suppose they live their lives watching their back at all times. Probably always in defense mode.

Anyone who thinks this is not a big national story because she is (in order of importance) attractive, white, and not poor has spent too much time in Fantasyland. Roll your eyes all you want...

Pretty much this.

You can't blame this on Nancy Grace. Her ratings aren't that good.

:scared1: The "thrill" of putting the puzzle together overshadows the fact that a child was murdered? No "thrills" for me involved. But you can't separate one from the other. I feel the same interest as those prosecutors in getting justice for a little girl murdered, except they're putting together and presenting the case, and I'm watching. The difference is that they're smarter, more educated and have the job and the guts to do it. Sometimes I watch medical mysteries shows for the same reason...I'm fascinated by the putting together of the puzzle pieces and finding the solution. Is that so terrible? That ability and interest in solving puzzles have helped my own family in medical situations.
Do you (or anyone else) really, really believe that if Casey and Caylee were black the case would be getting this kind of coverage?

Because I don't.

And I'm not black, so there's no personal bias in my saying this. My opinion is based on observation of what cases make it to the top, getting night after night coverage.
Yes, I do...with the facts of THIS case, I do. I guess we'll have to agree to disagree.

I haven't watched night after night coverage for the last 3 years, so I don't know how much there is. Every so often, I'd see that there was a new hearing or something, and I'd see it on the news. Haven't watched any hearings otherwise, that I recall. The jury selection and the trial tho? Yes, I find it very interesting, the whole process, including YES, justice for that little girl.

Sold! Seriously, big decision here...knit or crochet? Either way, I'm picturing giving everyone long skinny scarves for Christmas.
Also, people like to see the bad guy strung up, and I bet lots of people are waiting to see Casey strung up.
I think more than seeing her strung up, I want a real believable solid answer to what really happened, altho I don't think that will ever happen. Before what I've seen of this trial, I would have thought I'd want to see her get the death penalty. Surprisingly, to me, I don't. If this case gets people thinking, on many levels, I don't think that's a bad thing.

And while I'm here...the Atlanta Child Murders. Had that happened now, with the Internet and media being what it is today, it would be MUCH bigger than it was then...and it was big.

Other trials I watched on TV were Phil Spector (didn't even know who he was before that...just switched on TruTV one day and got hooked...oh, and Judge Fidler was rather appealing :)), and the Christopher Hightower trial (in RI...Sunday school teacher who murdered a family of 3, who had gone missing for months) which was on TV 18 years ago.

And I think that most people who are watching the Casey Anthony trial have been very drawn in by Judge Perry; I'm a huge Judge Perry fan, and I'm as interested in watching how he runs his courtroom as anything else. It's the whole package of this case. I'm going to miss Judge Perry when this is over. :(

For me it's the details of the case. When I first heard about it, it was a missing child case. Then Casey started to tell lie after lie after lie and I became intrigued, wanting to know the truth. I hoped the child would be found alive, as I do with any case. But this is a case that just has me wanting to know what really happened to the poor thing.

In all honesty, no matter how white or pretty Casey is, CAYLEE is the reason I watch and research and why I became so involved. It doesn't matter that I don't know her personally, but for 3 years I have hoped for justice for CAYLEE.

I guarantee that is the reason why most people watch as well.

I'm not saying that people questioning the attention this case gets don't want justice, I'm just giving my simple, basic and heartfelt reason why I watch. This picture says it all. :goodvibes

This girl was raped and it made nationals headlines

Tawana Brawley?

Good point. Not Caucasian, not under twelve, likely not middle class...

I am not sure Tawana Brawley is a valid comparison. She alleges she wasn't raped, but was sexually assaulted in other ways. It made it to the mainstream media because it was pushed there by Al Sharpton and others, including Bill Cosby. Ultimately, the grand jury failed to indict anyone on these charges.

I always wondered why the intense focus on the Scott Peterson/Lacey Peterson murders. Not that long after this case, there was the case of the guy who pretended to be a med student who killed his wife who was also pregnant. That story made a little blip on national news but quickly faded.

I remember that case,

The difference it was Christmas Eve, That guy didn't have a gf on the side he was calling during the time she went missing, if he did she didn't come forward.

I really believe if Casey were a minority from a poor community- we never would have heard of her or Cayley.

This sums it up. I just can't devote much attention to trial coverage, but we've all been dragged down this path before.

Here's the formula: Attractive white mom who happens to be a pathological liar + tragically murdered cute kid with eyes as big as saucers = catnip for the media and viewers looking for a summer diversion.
Then you add in extra spice such as the setting (Orlando -where America vacations!), grandstanding lawyers and drama-loving judges, and breathless hype from the MainStream Media (Nancy Grace's eybrows) so as to goose ratings.

My heart breaks for these young murder victims, but the way the media handles these cases -and the way America digests them -is something I feel dirty being a part of.

Zippa: haven't seen you around much lately. Glad to see you back posting.

Have you relocated in the last year or so? I know we used to live in the same county?
