Why can't people obey the speed limit?

LauraR said:
Wow, that's really cool! I'd love to know where to find one. Speeders on neighborhood streets are a pet peeve of mine, too. It's amazing how close people will tailgate when I'm going the exact speed limit. They act as if you're doing something wrong by obeying the law!! And I guess by tailgating they think they can bully you into going faster?

You can find them at most stores (Toys R Us, Target, WalMart, etc.)

Actually, the "man" I saw was a bit more manlier that that! :teeth: I think he had a white hat on and kind of looked like a construction worker. I'm sure there are all kinds of varieties.

I have to admit, I'd be pretty annoyed if I ran over cones because someone decided to set them up in the street. Speed limit or not, you don't put objects into the street.

The cones were not set up all the way into the street...mostly the curb and maybe inches to a foot into the street. The cones are about a foot high but easily visible. I'd rather put up cones as a precaution to kids playing and annoy you for speeding than have you speed and possibly injure or kill my child.

Yeah, it seems to me that if she had a problem avoiding the cones, she might have the same problem if there was a kid there.

I can appreciate that, and maybe the laws are different here, but we can't put anything on the street without a permit ( I know this from various volunteer activities).

I personally have no intentions of putting cones or anything into the street. I'd rather take your tag # and call the police.... :goodvibes I also do not know what our laws are here about placing anything in the street but just from what I witnessed was a classic example why everyone should obey the speed limit. The mom could have hit a child and she should be thankful it was a cone instead.

So what happens when someone swirves to avoid the cones and ends up in the other lane of the road, specifically when someone else is coming the other way. :confused3

You're assuming that the woman who ran over the cones was speeding -- why?

I assumed the "cone-hitter" was speeding because the poster (below) alluded to the fact that the woman was speeding. I assumed that she knew the woman was speeding. Maybe she wasn't.

But this mini van comes around another curve on the way out and runs over the cones. She stopped and asked me, "what was the cones for?"

This lady has small kids too and lives in a different part of the community. You would think of all people she would obey the speed limit. I just know a kid is going to get hurt sooner or later.

I guess I should have ran into the house and got my radar gun so I would know exactly :teeth: but since you asked here is what I saw. When I looked up, she had just ran over 1 cone and the noise of that is what caused me to look up. At the precise moment I looked up she ran over 2 more cones and the speed she was going it was obviouse it was faster than 20 mph before she braked and didnt stop until she was infront of my house 3 doors down.

Please don't misunderstand me, I'm on your side. The only other thing I want to add though, is my experience in a neighborhood I "cut through"every day. Yes, it's a shame they finished the street so that people could cut through. I understand how nice it was when it was still a dead end and no one did, but traffic around here is a nightmare and we need that cut through to take some traffic away from the main drag. Anyway, I set my cruise control on that street -- I NEVER EVER EVER go above the speed limit, and yet people are still out there yelling at my car and throwing tennis balls at me. I'm not speeding, they just wish I were going even slower. Or that I would take a different route. I'd be so ticked off it they ever took my tag #. They don't have a radar gun and I am telling the truth on my mother's life I am not speeding!

Oh, sorry, I missed that! You really do have a radar gun! Well then you'd see I don't speed! :thumbsup2

I never thought about throwing tennis balls......LOL. 20 mph is not fast I agree BUT you can easily spot a car going more than 20. The main road is like a Indy 500 around here. Other parents can tend to speeders on their street and do whatever they desire. I'm only concerned with my street and on a curve at that.

I live on a dead end road on a small hill with a narrow road with people parked in the street and surprisingly we don't have much of an issue with people speeding. The police are the ones who drive recklessly through my neighborhood- especially when coming down the hill. I'm always amazed they don't crash into one of the cars in the street.

You rarely see a car parked in the street here. Side note: Cars are not allowed to be parked in the steet overnight.

Throw a tennis ball at my car and my speeding will not be what you are worrying about at that moment. :furious: I normally do 30 in a 25, yes even in my neighborhood, and it's still a safe speed.

Also getting the tag number will do NOTHING, unless you want to publish it in the HOA newsletter. My tag number could show up there, I wouldn't care. Who goes around checking out each other's tag numbers? :confused3

There's no choice but to park your car in the street in my neighborhood for many people. The houses were built in 1940 and not all of them have driveways and the ones who do are extremely narrow so you cannot have more than 1 car in the driveway without having to move them around when someone needs to go to work in the morning.

:rotfl: There's this one dad that doesn't throw things, but if he's out he always yells SLOW DOWN and gives a very stern look shaking his finger. One day, I'm going to get out of my car and we are going to have a little chat.

Sheesh, did I say I would throw tennis balls? I was only responding to AuntPolly's post about having that done to her. I never heard of it or considered doing that. I agree, who goes around looking at tag #'s? But if the HOA went alittle further and published the car owners name with the tag # would that bother you? It would be like seeing bounced checks in the grocery store up for public display.

What would you rather see happen....nothing until a child gets killed or injured? Then decide it is time to do something about speeders in a 20 mph residential area? Sorry but my kids are precious to me and I have a right to protect them from those who do not care to obey the speed limit.

Let me guess what you'd say..... ;)
