Why buy 25 or 50 pt add-ons?

I'm sure there is an easy answer to this, but we are on the verge of buying into DVC...sometime within the next 10 months.

Why do people want to buy 25 or 50 points at the new resorts? Does that make it a home resort just like your initial one? If so, I can see how it would be great to do so. Otherwise, I don't see the reason to do this.

TIA!

Yes, ownership at any DVC resort provides the 11 month Home Resort Reservation Priority using points from that contract. Even with a small purchase like 25 points, owners can use up to 75 points every three years by using banked, borrowed and current points for the reservation.

For whichever resort you buy your points, that is the only resort you can use those points with the benefit of the 11 month booking window. Many people buy points at different resorts to take vacations at alternating resorts every other year...or they buy enough points to take two vacations (or more) in the same year, but at two different resorts.

Well we are currently looking into buying a small 100 pt contract.

Then we will add 25 pts here and there. It comes down to finances. We have the funds to pay off the 100 pt contract but don't need a 1 bedroom at the moment. As our son (and or family grows), we will add more points to upgrade the original 100 pt contract. I hope that makes sense...but thats our reasoning...if that makes sense :)

Still trying to figure this out...So, if we buy in with 160 points at one place, and then add on 50 points at another...we can only book up to 160 points at our home resort at 11 months. If we need 200 at our home, we would have to wait until 7 months?

Just trying to see why so many seem to buy into multiple resorts.

Ok. Thanks. That makes sense. We are weighing the pros and cons of the present offerings. Right now, it seems like a good idea to buy enough points to stay at one resort every year with the option of purchasing some other points to stay at every 3 years.

Yes, if you will mainly stay at your original resort, there is no advantage in an add-on at a different resort since the points may NOT be combined until 7 months. If you will be needing 200 points for the type villa you want, I'd get them all at one resort.

I guess it's all a matter of what you can do and when. For us financially buying 50pts resale for our first contract was all could do financially. We plan on adding all 25pt contracts as the budget allows. Our home resort is OKW so 50 pts gets us a Sun thru Fri visit every year during most times. Good luck!

In our case it was in order to pay cash for our contract. We figured we'll add on in increments that we can also pay cash for. Love not having a monthly payment for DVC.

This is our reason as well. I hate debt, especially for a discretionary thing like a vacation timeshare.

We also have added on with small contracts. We are like others and don't like the debt and we have bought a small 50 points at the AKV to have a small 11 month window for a studio once in awhile. We are now considering buying a small 60 point a HH also. Our main home resort is OKW with 280 points there. We have had the additish kind of bad. But the DVC has given us many happy memories.

That was our thinking exactly 11 years ago when we purchased. We purchased an original 230 points at OKW, and knew right away that we needed more. A year later, we added on 150 points, but we decided to add them at OKW so we would have more points available in one place. We didn't do a different resort until last year when we added on 69 points at AKV. That gives us the type of unit we want every 3rd year there.

We started with 100 at BWV (resale). Then added 50 BWV through Disney about a year later (needed more points!). Then added 50 at AKV this January so we could book concierge for a couple nights in 2009. We only stay in studios - and I figure I can use these 50 points every other year for a nice long weekend at AKV. We got concierge for January 2009 for 4 nights - so I am excited! After we try that out, I may use those 50 points for a "girls" weekend for me and my daughter every other summer.

I bought my add ons in small increments because that way I could pay cash and they resell GREAT!

I considered a 33 point add on at AKL as it would give us 11 month booking there. I am interested in trying for studio (or 1BR) concierge for 2- 3 nights every 2 or 3 years. I figure home resort advantage is the only way I will ever have the tiniest chance at it. In general, I think the AKL has very attractive point values for rooms.
But, if I did buy the points at AKL and then didn't end up using them there--it would defeat the purpose. At 7months all the points become alike and a person is probably better off buying the lowest per point price/lowest MF contract or just buying more points at their own home resort.

I'm with CarolA!

The smaller contracts are easier to sell-off if you need. We hope we never have to sell our contracts, but if necessary it is much easier to sell a 25-50 point contract than one that is 100+

I'm seriously considering buying a small add on at BLT so that we can guarantee the ability to stay there when we want. The amount is what I'm debating right now. I could get 45 points which would give me the 11 month window and I could borrow/bank points to get 90 every 2 years for a MK view studio every 2 years.... or I could only borrow a few points to get a standard or lake view, etc...
Or, I could just get 30 points so that I could bank/borrow for a MK view studio every 3 years, or a std view every 2 years.

I don't really need the points, but I would like to have the 11 month window as I imagine BLT will be one of those where it will be hard to get rooms at the 7 month window (like VWL, BCV, and BWV), especially at the times when I normally travel.

Is there a minimum amount of points you can buy as an add on? And I think I read that if you purchase less than 100 points add on, you will pay $112 per point (no $5 discount). Am I right? This is a bit confusing!!

Min addon at current resorts is 25 points if you pay cash and 50 if you want to finance. The price is $104 per point with no closing costs for all but BLT. No incentives for addons less than 100 points.

Edited to add: Addons $92 at HH & VB, $101 at OKW and WLV, according to DVCNews.

For HH and VB, price is $92 for less than 50 points, but $87 for 50 or more points.
