Why am I not excited about this trip?

I just posted this on another board, but I'm thinking that you DVC'ers might better understand how I'm feeling...

What is wrong with me?! Last week I booked a week in mid-August with the 40% off code ...an unexpected surprise that arrived in our mailbox last week. We booked the GF - a first for our family - also a courtesy of the aforementioned code. I called my best friend to see if they wanted to go at the same time, and they are (with the discount as well, so they are thrilled).

So why am I not looking forward to this?!? At all?! Up until last Thursday we were booked to go to Disney's Hilton Head resort this summer...for something different. We've done Disney the past 2 Septembers, and were ready for a change this year. We were really looking forward to a more relaxed vacation...a lot of sand, sun, surf and pool time!!! When that code showed up last week it seemed too good to ignore, so we promptly changed our plans and booked a return to WDW. A little too promptly I'm afraid.

The problem is that now I have buyers remorse!! And worse yet, I can't cancel without messing with my best friend's vacation! If we cancel, they don't get the discount (I called Disney to ask), and I just couldn't do that to her and her family. :sad1:

I seriously can't believe I am feeling like this (I'm always up for WDW), but right now...today (well, and yesterday too)...I just don't want to go. I want something different. WHAT IS WRONG WITH ME?!? :confused3

WWYD???

You'll probably do a 180 by the time next week rolls around. :thumbsup2

I had similar feelings before my last trip. In my case it was that the trip I wanted to take involved my sister and her family, but she was going through chemo, so it got delayed. So we took someone else, and it wasn't someone I particularly enjoyed - so I dreaded the trip.

It was an OK trip as long as I took it as its own thing and was really flexible. I think I'll always look back on it as a trip we shouldn't really have done the way we did it.

Call your best friend. Tell them that, while you look forward to seeing them, this trip you may no be around to play native guide - since you've decided to enjoy some of Disney's other attractions. Then make plans for a trip that doesn't involve the parks much - spend more time at the waterparks or the pool. Go horseback riding at Fort Wilderness. Play golf or minigolf. See Cirque. Make reservations for California Grill at fireworks time. Rent mouseboats.

August is a long time away, you'll probably change your tune by then. ;)

If not, then do as crisi suggested and shake it up a bit by doing things a little off the beaten path. It makes for a totally different vacation.

you gotta mix it up this time....do some out of the ordinary things that you dont normally do at disney...(spend more time at the pool, check out thos mini-golf places, take a tour you have always wanted to)....Maybe less parks, more "other" stuff....I agree with you that as time has gone by have become ambivalent about trips, but always get fired up a few weeks ahead and ALWAYS have a great time!!!!

You'll LOVE the GF! I agree with previous posters, take the time to really enjoy your resort, the pool, more off the beaten track attractions. I've felt like that before, and I find it makes all the difference to plan a couple things we've never done before. August is also a great time to enjoy the water parks. I hope you have a wonderful time!

Last August my best friend and I and our two boys spent a week at Disney and never entered the theme parks. We did do Disney Quest for one of those days and trust me, if you have children it's a fun way to let them do their own thing while you sit and talk and have coffee. We did some of the interactive games with them but most of the time they were on their own. It was relaxing, cool (air conditioned) and different from any other vacation. We spent more time by the pool, we also went to Blizzard Beach one day and to Medieval Times on another. It's one of the most relaxing vacations I've had at Disney World. Cheer Up, it's still a vacation and I'm sure that you'll make the most of it. Have fun, I'm going again in August too!

Thanks everyone. I REALLY appreciate your kind replies and suggestions (I got one reply on the other board where I posted this and was told "...you won't get any sympathy here..." )

I love the suggestions to shake it up a bit - we've never done the water parks and I think we'll try that. My kiddos are going to be 3 and (almost) 5 and I think they will be OK to try a water park?? I've read that TL is better for toddlers. Does that sound right?

We are also going to do more pool time and less park time...we always build in lots of "off days" to enjoy our resort, but I think we'll do that even more so this year. I'm thinking only 3 park days this time (excluding the water park).

I think my biggest concern is about feeling attached at the hip with my friend and her family. I love the idea that we will be there at the same time, and will be able to enjoy some fun times together. But I want to have lots of family-only time (my friend is not as much into the idea of that. She's all about letting us do the planning and being along for the ride...only because we know WDW much much better than she does. They've never done it as a family.). I don't want to feel responsible for their plans. So I've gently talked to her and basically I have decided that I'm going to make the plans for my family, invite them to join us for a few things (2 park days, a few dinner ressies), then let her know we'll see her plenty at the pool on our off days. I have to do what is best for us and hopefully she'll understand and be OK with it. I don't want to hurt anyone's feelings, but I know that I'm going to have to be assertive about what we do and don't want.

I'm sorry if I sounded pouty. I know we'll have fun and I feel extremely fortunate that we are able to go again...I know how lucky we are and I just want to be able to enjoy our time as a family. To me, that is what it is all about!!!

Thank you again for understanding and making such great suggestions!

Afternoon Tea at the Garden View sounds like a wonderful way to spend some
quality time with your best friend.:goodvibes
