Who's Goofy??

Thanks, Coach! I would guess that walking the half sounds like it should be easier, but I just think of how much longer I'd be out there, too - I can't imagine that would help. I like the 2/1 run/walk - so far on training runs I thought it would slow me down more than it actually did.

Vicky I disagree with the common marathon training programs. They are designed as a; do it, cross it off your bucket list, and move on event. I know that you train year around and have a high level of fitness all the time. Lots of shorter, regular workouts are key to your fitness level and your ability to complete a distance. The fact that this event is yet to be done shouldn't scare you, just relax and keep up your training and you will do super.

Dave:hippie:

You'll be FINE

Thanks Dave and Coach Charles! I tend to overthink a lot and Dave's right that I'm a bit nervous because a lot of the Goofy is unknown.

Very reasonable goal. What I really hate to see are folks who walk the half and try to run the full hard. What can happen is a runner tries to walk the half, spends their legs because they never trained for a long walk, and then wonders why Sunday is so hard.

Last month, I tried doing a 3 mile speed walk in lieu of a 3 mile run. That was when I was having mild knee problems. The walk was harder than I anticipated and I had mild shin splints at the end. Walking is definitely not easy if you're not ready for it.

We are only 7 weeks away from the Marathon weekend. Where has this year gone, seems like only a few months ago that I finished the Goofy and swore I'd never do that insanity again...Humm seems like I said that twice before also. It is an interesting event and very doable but it does require a certain amount of strength of will, especially the last part of the marathon. Once you enter the Disney Studios your body is pretty well on auto pilot and your mind knows that you are gonna make it.

Who is doing the Goofy Challenge this January?

What are your training plans for the next 7 weeks?

What if anything do you plan to carry with you on the course.

Are you running or walking the challenge?

If you have done the Goofy before, what is your best advice for a first timer?

Please add your thoughts for others.

Thanks.

Dave:hippie:

I hope to be Goofy!

On my long run weekend nearly 2 weeks ago, I did an 8.5miler on the tm Friday morning, then went out for my first 20 miler on Saturday. After about 6 miles, my achilles started giving me trouble. Of course, I wouldn't stop, so I hobbled for about 6-7 more miles until it stopped hurting. The 20 miles were in the history books, but my achilles still bothers me. I didn't run for 6 days, then last Friday I limped for 30 min on the treadmill. Saturday, I walked/limped/ran 6 miles. I'm heading out for 3 miles today to test the waters. My plan was to run 10/23 this weekend, then the R&R 1/2 in Vegas in 2 weeks, then another back to back 12/26 two weeks later. Now, I'm hoping for just a 10-15 mile run this weekend and I'll try the 10/23 in 4 weeks and scrap the 12/26.

I can't stand the texture of gu, so I will be carrying sport beans, phone, camera, moleskin and sunglasses in my ifitness double pouch belt. I'll pack a bag for DBF on Sunday with the second half of my sport beans, as well as other emergency items. I'll station him along the way with my "reinforcements".

I plan on mainly walking the 1/2 and run/walking the full. I have been training accordingly. This is my first full, and my first Goofy. I'll have 4 1/2's in the record books coming into the weekend.

First goofy for me and will be my 3rd marathon. Did disney 26.2 in january of 2011 for my first and hooked.

Long back to back runs kill me. Did 9 monday and then 19 tuesday and while finished strong, my body took just too much of a beating. Needed two days off from training and taking a third today to be back to 100% for tomorrow morning. Have a scheduled 10 and 20 this monday and tuesday but turning it into a single 20. I would rather run a few, maybe another 1 or 2 good 20 or even 21 milers before disney than go and get injured at this point. With all the costs of airfair, hotel, registration I can't afford to be out of the race.

My plan is to run a moderate paced half and then moderate paced full, no PRs other than to finish the 39.3 miles. Have different groups of people to run with each day so I am very excited.

This is turning out to be a bucket list type thing like the marathon was this past year as I hit 40. Maybe on to full distance ironmans in a few years on that list to do.

Will wear a fuel belt, the kind with no drink holders, I mostly live off the course for liquids. Not much gels, gus on the marathon at all though. We didn't see any until mile 20 last year. Missed the first one. So I will pocket a few and a shot block pack for the run, along with a small camera, room key, money.

Might be using that biofreeze this year which I didn't need this past.

Good luck everyone!

Papa, you may want to knock of the back to backs now. You have all the value you will get from them already. The largest value is the mental game and understanding how to get out and run on legs that are just a little sore.

One thing Dave did not ask

How many folks run in a separate set of shoes each day? I run in different shoes as my half shoes would not be dry on Sunday morning. Just thought of it as I read Vickie’s post. In 07 I had a mis-fitting original insoles in my shoes. It was a common issue with the Hurricane and one that I did not understand until after the race. Long story short, the insoles would push up to the toe box then roll up as the worked back leaving large areas of hotpsots in the wrinkles and rolled up areas. I stopped in MK and yanked the insoles… Bad Idea. I saw Mary at mile 13 and explained I needed my half shoes. That was one of the two times she ever made it from Poly to AK…. But I was also chugging slowly.

I use separate shoes on each of the LR days on the weekend. When I do shorter runs like 3-5 miles on the weekdays, I'm not as particular. I plan to bring two pairs with me in January as well. Sadly my NB769 are coming to the end of their life span and I'm in search of a replacement pair right now. Not the best time I know...

Hi guys - I'm getting ready for my first Goofy too, so I'm really enjoying this thread! I'm still building mileage - 16 tomorrow - and working in some back to backs. Two weeks ago, I did a really easy 7 mile run/walk on Friday and was feeling just fine going into my 14 mile run on Saturday. But it was a nightmare! By mile 3, I felt really tired and by mile 7, I was feeling physically and mentally done! I managed to finish the whole 14, but it was ugly!! It was honestly the first time in all my running that I sincerely thought I might not finish. In retrospect, I did a lot wrong. After my 7 miles on Friday, I felt good and didn't consider my recovery or think about nutrition. I even skipped lunch and munched on Halloween candy all day!!! So, I'm going to try again this week and hopefully have better results.

I'm also working out my run/walk strategy. I am definitely going to run/walk the half and have been training with switching at 1/4 mile intervals, which means I'm walking more than running. My plan has been to run the full and that's how I've been training, but I've been enjoying my run/walk workouts so much that I've been toying with doing a 3:1 or 2:1 for the full.

On race day, I'll bring along my SPI belt with some gel, blocks, beans and my phone. I'll just drink off the course. And Coach, I will definitely have two pairs of shoes!!! After running the half in the sleet and freezing rain in 2010, my shoes were soaked and I kept thinking how awful it would be if I had to run the Goofy in those soaked shoes. I'm hoping that the weather gods are kind to us this year!

Take Care
Leslie

I do alternate my shoes regularly, and plan to do so for the Goofy. I'm trying to max out the miles on my last pair of Karhus, so I can pick up a second pair of NB890s and then both of my main pairs will be the same model.

I plan on wearing 2 different pairs of the same style of shoe. My pair for the half will have about 200 miles on them, while my pair for the full will only have about 50.

I finished 3 miles yesterday, with a 5 min run/1 min walk. The achilles wasn't too bad, but started hurting more after I got home and iced it. I think it may be tendonitis, which I've dealt with in my inner ankles. I'm taking my anti-inflammatory meds again, which may be helping.

Actually a great time for a new pair of wheels. The rule of thumb of no new equipment on race day still holds, but if you are getting a new pair of wheels of the same style - e.g. no new and improved new releases, you are pretty good to go almost out of the box. I have run a couple halves on new wheels with less than 5 miles and not had any issue. For Goofy, maybe not. But you have plenty of time to put 20-40 miles on Sudays shoes.

Good running shoes need no breaking in so right out of the box works as long as you know a shoe works for you. Never race a long distance event with an untried shoe however. I did that once with the Mizuno Revolver and that was the beginning of me using them ever since. Yes I got lucky, but that was when I did my first half, The Flying Pig, as a race walker and the shoes I had been using as a runner weren't working for me as a race walker. I live in a small town and there wasn't a lot to choose from, but the race expo had some good vender support and I was able to pick some new weapons.

I have a new pair of Asics Gel Nimbus 13 coming in today from Running Warehouse to replace my 1 year old Nimbus 12. Will put on a couple of walks before next weekend's Space Coast Half then use the old pair for the half in January and the new pair for the full. Last night DW was talking about signing up for the 5K again and if so then it will be back to back Dopey's.

The NB769 is a model from 2009 (?). I was lucky and bought about 5 pairs of the 769 but I'm on my last pair now :) The replacement for that pair was the NB760 and I hated them :( It might have been an coincidence, but I think it caused my knee problems. I'm going to the NB store this weekend and see if the next replacement model 860 is any better. My shoes usually tend to go around the 250 mark (I guess I'm a stomper  ) so the pair I'm running in now probably won't make it to the full.

I'll be doing Goofy, too. Hoping to break my streak of DNF's. I finished the very 1st Goofy and not since (twice had to stop due to injury and another time got swept). :sad2: Training has been somewhat difficult this fall due to family and work issues. Motivation hasn't been there, although it is getting better.

My training is at 5-7 miles 3x per week and then a long run (Increasing the distance each week) on Saturday. I'm still building on the endurance so will probably only do one back to back long session. As of now I have that scheduled for the 1st weekend in Dec.

I usually wear a SpiBelt with my room key, ID, money and shot blocks or a ClifBar. I carry a water bottle and camera and my phone is hooked onto the SpiBelt.

I'll be doing a run/walk combo, but it will probably be more walk than run. I hope to finish the 1/2 in 3 hours. I just want to finish the full with an official time.

Here's a problem I have: In my last two half-marathons, I have been in a walking rhythm where I did not want to break stride or slow down to get out my blocks/bar to eat. I felt like it would slow me down and I didn't want to fiddle with unzipping the pouch and unwrapping the blocks. I made it through both halves, but I know I'll need to eat on the full. And I don't want to depend on what's on the course. I do take bananas, oranges or other stuff if offered on the course, I just don't want to do the work to unwrap what a pack. Weird, I know.

Have you thought of packaging in a zip lock? It seems to be a better way as long as you take time to remember that 6 (i think) are a serving... If you package 2-3 flavors, then you keep a variety even through a station and never tire of one flavor...

Hang in there --- You WILL finish.

I've been eying the race belts that have loops to attach gels to, and I'm pretty sure I've seen them with blocks stuck there as well. Another option is to safety pin the blocks to your spibelt, then just rip off what you want when you are ready.

Good suggestions. Either pin the ziplock or the blocks directly.
This could work.

I don't really like the gels, although I can take one if I have to.

To make it easier, you could get little ziploc type baggies and put a serving of the blocks in those and pin them to the belt. That way you'd have what you wanted already in an easy to open package. I got a package of about 100 little bags at hobby lobby for $2 in the jewelry craft section. I use that size bag to carry salt pills, but you could definitely fit in some blocks if you wanted.
