Linda: my head is spinning! I'm not that great with numbers, and have no idea how many points a night costs. When you say 80 for Sun-Thurs, is that all the days or per day? If it's 80 points per day, I don't see how that is a good deal at all. Our 10-day trip coming up is costing me just about $1024 I think is the total for me & the girls, and that's a LOT more than we usually spend. When I went with Lyzzie in May for 6 days, it was only about $450. I just am always so afraid to have anything I HAVE to pay for, because I have no job security whatsoever and am not good at saving. Maybe I could save more if I'd quit going to WDW... nahh.
:rolleyes1 oops...sorry!80 points is for the 5 nights...or 16 points per night. or the studio is 8 points...which they usually rent for around 10 a point so it would come out to about 80 a night for a studio!!! plus you get tons of discounts ;) I know what you mean...you KNOW you're going to go to wdw...and as we are good at using the points to benefit us the most...it would be either a studio at 8 points a night =$80 a night if renting or the 1 bdrm is 16...but still not bad considering the benefits and what you get for your $. we'd have a lot more space, incredible location, better beds:cloud9:...all kinds of good stuff!

Warning!! Warning!! Possible long post. Probably depressing as well……
Please feel free to ignore if you would like…..
I am just a little sad about some things going on with my little brother.
A little background……I am pretty sure I have mentioned to you guys that my father committed suicide less than a month after my 13th birthday. Well, my younger brother would have been about 8 at the time.

Anyway, he has always had problems dealing with it. He is a horse trainer and has basically lived his life going from place to place. But he cannot find happiness. And it is a shame too because he has lived in some great places – everywhere from Northern California, Colorado, New Jersey, Germany, Italy, and now back in Oklahoma.

In the past 5 years or so, he has gotten worse – drinking, depression, money problems – you name it. There was probably a 2 year time frame where I did not even know where he lived.

So, anyway, probably about 6 months ago, he calls me out of the blue – after not hearing from him in 2 years – and tells me he is working for a local TV meteorologist here in Tulsa. And since then, everything seemed to be going great. But apparently it was all a façade.

I talked to him on the phone on Sunday and asked him if he would like to come out to our house for 4th of July. And he said yes, he would like to. So, I told him I’d call him Wednesday morning and tell him what time. So, I call on Wednesday – no answer all day long. Same thing yesterday.

So, last night I call the wife of who he works for. And I got the scoop.

He is drinking so badly, that they had to let him go. In fact, they tried to get him counseling, tried to get him into AA, enrolled him in college so that he could work toward a different career path, basically anything they could do to help him out. And he has refused any and all help. He has shut them out.

Now, he has no job and will probably be evicted from his apartment – which they were paying for – soon. I still can’t get ahold of him. He still won’t answer the phone.

I am both mad at him for what he has done and worried about what he might do to himself.

Thanks for listening to me.
oh pozey...I am so sorry:grouphug: I would be so worried too! I hope you hear from him very soon:guilty:

Yes it was. I didn't get a chance to see the DCL show - but I DVR'd it. Did it have any new information?
I'm not sure...I've seen the updated ones but I watched through my eyelids too:laughing: I listened to it..but that doesn't help much:rotfl: sorry!

Hello everyone! Happy Friday...Boy, I loved having that day off in the middle of the week!! It did feel like yesterday was Monday!!

Lin, Congrats on passing your test!!!
CongratsGreenGlitterStars.gif

DznyFan, sorry DH said he didn't want to go to Disney in the fall. Erin's response was hilarious though:rotfl:

Linda, Mike is so funny :lmao: I bet that shut up his friends real quick!!!

Pozey, I am so so sorry about your brother. That is a very tough situation. I agree with Lyzziesmom, you can't be an enabler but its hard not to help someone you love. He must be embarassed about his situation and thats why he lied...I hope you hear from him soon.

2x....Poly with MK View  you lucky duck.

Welcome, Tink85!!!! Just jump right in, we are a friendly bunch!!!

Nicole- I had NO problems using my printed out ticket for the P&P Party in Feb. Don't worry about it!!!!!

Lesa, sorry about your family drama. I can relate. It is hard because when I have kids, there are some people in my family I don't want them around....You are very lucky to have Michele's side of the family

Wasn't that funny?? I had to laugh - even though I was really going WTH? Did he say what I think he just said???

I just started feeling really bad. I started getting really hot and nauseous; I want to go home. :guilty: I don't want to be sick.
:wizard: hope you start feeling better soon, Amber!

(and PS - TDS is a very bad place for me to be...have any of you seen the line they call Tiki Kingdom??? It's fabulous and I'm slightly addicted...)
great line! We have some of the housewares stuff.

Linda: Is that calculation per month? I'm just not really clear on that. ;) Yes I do go to WDW a lot, but I think I still spend less than DVC because I really do travel on the cheap. February was an exception, that was probably my most expensive trip but I figured it was worth it because I was meeting all you guys. Normally I would not stay in a moderate and eat at TS every day without free dining. But if my parents decide to buy into DVC... oh the possibilities!
You can look at it this way, too - I'm totally w/ Linda about averaging it out over the period of time you will be able to use it - however - also bear in mind what you're paying NOW, plus dues.
We've owned for 12 years, and I think it paid for itself in about 8 - but that was figuring what we had paid out against a moderate room rate cost, I think. It also included all the trips that we've used it for - our trips, stepson's trips (he's gone about 4 times on our points), we've given a few nights away as wedding presents, used it at Disneyland, etc. Right now, at OKW, we pay right at $85/mo in dues. Our dues have gone up about $24 a month over the past twelve years, I think - somewhere between $20 and $24, I can't remember exactly how much our dues were when we started.
Right now, in dues, we're paying about $1,020.00 per year. If divided by seven nights, it comes out to $145 a night. When it really pays off, like Linda said, is when you go a LOT. And in the beginning, when the payments are being made and the dues payments are being made, it's really tipped to the DVC side.
Remember too, that the DVC rooms, including the studios, are bigger than the standard resort room, and the hotels are NICE. I know for some people, that's not a factor, but really apples to apples would be pricing a DVC resort against a deluxe.

DznyFan…….I am sorry to hear that your DH has nixed the idea of a Disney trip over Fall Break. You still have time to change his mind though. And from what I gather, I’m sure Erin will be working on him as well…… In the meantime, look for every “Disney-themed” show on television – the Travel Channel, Food Network, History Channel, whatever – and make sure he’s around when they come on. Speaking of which, the Travel Channel had on an old “WDW: Behind the Scenes” show on last night. But it had new updates in it. It had info on the Cinderella Suite inside the Castle, the Nemo ride, and other stuff. Instead of making a whole new show, they just mixed in some newer information.
Funny you mention that - we did catch the last third or so of that show. As I was searching Royal Caribbean and DCL 3 or four night cruise rates.....

She clarified, but it's for the whole stay. One thing to bear in mind - the amount of points it 'costs' to stay depends on three variables: the resort you stay at, the accomodation size, and the time of year you go. We have 230 points, and we could squeeze out almost three full weeks a year in the off seasons, in a studio room. However, if we go to a 1-bdrm, which we usually use, it increases the points cost considerably. Remember, too, that points can be used at all the Disney resorts (but the point cost is higher to stay at a non-DVC resort), Hilton Head Island, Vero Beach, and DCL. Is your head REALLY spinning now??

Yep! :thumbsup2

Pozey - I am so sorry to hear about your brother's struggles. That is so sad - I think what Lyzziesmom said is dead on - you have to let them sink or swim on their own, and it's hard to watch the people you love drown. I hope he's OK, and hope he starts working some of this out soon. Has he ever sought any kind of counseling or therapy to work through some of the troubles of his past?

Yikes! That looks even worse than what I was imagining. Honestly, it makes me wonder how these ideas even get passed through the first meetings. Even Lyzzie looks at most "kids" movies and wrinkles her nose - she would hate this one. Then again, she thought the Garfield movie was okay, so who knows? :confused3

I know for some people, that's not a factor, but really apples to apples would be pricing a DVC resort against a deluxe.

I think what Lyzziesmom said is dead on - you have to let them sink or swim on their own, and it's hard to watch the people you love drown.

See that's the thing - I know for a lot of people, DVC is a great thing. For me right now at this point in my life, it would not save me money. I might come out even. Hence the evil master plan to plant the DVC seeds into my parents' heads, and hope they grow and flourish! ;) Since they are catching the Disney bug and have a bit of money to burn, I'm thinking it's a win/win. And yes, I'm like Linda Blair over here with all the spinning.

Oh would you look at that -- it looks like sometimes I actually know what I'm talking about! And here I thought I was just flapping my... fingers?

oh ok, I thought I was losing it for real this time!!!! :teeth:

Speaking of the Twilight Zone... when my parents came over on Wednesday afternoon, my dad put the TZ on and took a nap on the couch. Lyzzie decided she'd better go watch it so she can "study up" for riding ToT. She's so funny!

I think the evil master plan is brilliant! mwah ha ha ha ha! Plus, another carrot to dangle in front of them is the other places (Blasphemy!) they (what I really mean is YOU) can go - Hilton Head, Vero Beach, or anywhere in the world with an Interval International exchange. Funny you mentioned Linda Blair - that was the visual that popped into my head when I typed that sentence.... OH!!! and another carrot - since this is a real estate investment, the interest CAN be used for a tax deduction.

DznyFan: See now, if I started talking tax deductions they'd know I was up to something and the evil plan would be foiled!! I'll leave that up to the pros - my job is just to plant the seeds and get them to take the tour, and let the idea grow & fester until it can no longer be ignored. Not that I've given it any thought, or anything. ;) Every time we talk WDW, I mention a little tidbit about SSR, and how cool it would be if we could stay somewhere like that every year, or something about one of the other DVC resorts, and the big carrot for Dad is AKL -- he almost had us switching to a night there last year but opted for the Segway tour instead. It would be great if they (and by that I mean I) could stay in a different DVC every year!

Lyzziesmom - good point!!! (As you can see, I wouldn't be any good at evil master plans)

I think staying at a different DVC resort each trip is a fabulous idea! We've only stayed at the Boardwalk, besides OKW. I loved it, and I'd REALLY like to stay at the Beach Club - walking to Epcot, if you know what I mean! BUT Monkey doo likes Old Key West, and he doesn't like the other hotels.

We've stayed at the Poly (paid cash) and POFC (1st trip and paid cash 2nd time), and WL (pre-DVC), but I can't get him to budge off of OKW.

Mike and I have been discussing DVC and he is very interested in it. :) I'm doing some research now. I think if we do end up getting it, we will go resale.

It started because I was telling him how much Linda had been researching and he told me I should do the same. I am VERY excited!

Amber, how exciting for you!

I know, I am so excited! It won't be for a while, because we want to pay cash, but I am so happy just thinking about it.

I am getting ready to call and add on an extra day to our Sept trip too.

We are on page 3!! Darlings, this is not acceptable!!!

DVC is the best thing going!!! We bought in '94 and we love it!! We own at OKW. If we buy any more points it will be at Vero. The best vacation is a week at WDW then a week at the ocean to recover from the week at WDW:thumbsup2
