Who has a Kindle? (wireless reading device)

Darn this thread!!:lmao: I have been holding out, I REALLY wanted this for Xmas, but decided to wait and get it for my 40th b-day in August. Now I see that the Kindle 2 is out...I couldn't help myself....I HAD to buy it now!!!:rotfl: Also got the leather case and the extended warranty. $493.00 later:scared1: ! But it is something I will definately use and something I wanted so .... I did it!

Amazon just shipped me a new Kindle, that I received today, because my first one stopped working. I wish I had waited a few weeks and I would have been able to get the Kindle 2 as a replacement.

Maybe I can convince them this one doesn't work too...

I've been on the waiting list since early December and will be getting the Kindle 2 shipping on Feb 24!!

Damn, I guess the old cover won't fit :( figures.

I WANT the new one..... LOL

BUT I LOVE my red cover for the old one!!!

Um, some people:rolleyes1 might be ordering the blue and green covers for their new Kindle and keeping the red cover for their old Kindle.

ok. how much are the blue and green covers?????

I see a red one for over 100 bucks, but NO WAY!!!!

Bah humbug. We gave my mom a Kindle for Christmas, along with a beautiful red cover; ordered one each for DH and me, and got covers for those when I got Mom's. The covers have been sitting in their sealed box from M-Edge for a couple of weeks now, and I got notice today that we will be getting the Kindle 2's. I have emailed Amazon, asking about the cover fitting, but haven't gotten an answer; I guess this means it won't? Oh, and I also got those little light things to fit inside the covers! I'd bet M-Edge isn't going to be really excited about accepting returns on these now-useless covers.

Oh, and I meant to ask; how do you find if there are free books offered? I can't seem to locate a place to search for those.

I have the light too.... damn. I will be really mad if they won't fit, (but my guess it will not since the new one is sooooo slim!!)

I ordered from M Edge, and they were $44.95 each, I think. The total for both was less than 100 bucks.

Sorry you got caught in the secondary market pinch - I don't know if they will return for credit or not, but it wouldn't hurt to ask.

For free books on the Amazon site, search "Price - Low to High" and the free books will come up first. Also check the forums - people seem to post about freebies they have discovered. And, of course, there are plenty of other sites with free books galore - Project Gutenberg, etc. Again, there are posts about free books on the Amazon forum.

It seems like some people waited on a free book offer and then the price went up. If you see something you think you might want, go ahead and download it - you may miss your chance otherwise.

The M Edge ones were on the Amazon site, like the Cole Haan ones are now. I would assume M Edge will "adjust" the size and come out with new covers soon.

Thanks, Liz. Going to search now.

Oh yay! The light works with that one. Liz, you are a true treasure! I've had such a Monday that my mind is totally functionless!

No, I don't think there is any difference in the number or cost of Kindle books. It wouldn't make sense for them to offer two price points. Where did you read that?

And, as you probably know, Kindles can't be backlit in the true sense of the word because the eink screens are opaque and light can't shine through them. There have been some attempts at least by Sony to light their reader by embedding lights around the edge, but some people have complained about glare on the page. The best reading experience with an ebook that uses eink technology is always going to be with an external light source like a lamp.

I didn't read it anywhere it's just something I kind of assumed from, the email I got kind of inferred that, at least to me:

Sleek & Slim: 10.2 ounces and just over 1/3 inch

Improved Display: Screen now boasts 16 shades of gray for crisper images and text

Longer Battery Life: 25% longer battery life; read for days without recharging

More Storage: Holds over 1,500 books

Faster Page Turns: 20% faster page turns

Selection: The biggest eBook library on earth with over 230,000 titles

It just made me wonder if more books would be available on K2. Until either a good backlighting alternative or major browser improvements are made, K1 suits my needs just fine. It's just that the email was a bit ambiguous.

I HIGHLY recommend purchasing the Kindle Cookbook :thumbsup2 It has sources for more freebies than you'll EVER be able to read. Granted, most are classics, but what's so bad about that? And Liz is right, the forums are a great place for leads on hidden gems at ridiculously cheap or free costs. Read them obsessively ;)

Got my notice on the Kindle 2 today. I was surprised - hadn't heard a peep about it. My first thought was, "I have just GOT to have it!" but then I looked at it closer. The only real benefit I can see is the size and the button placement - but I'm having a hard time see $359 in value in it.

If I didn't already have a Kindle, I'd be HOT on this right now... but I do have one. :confused3

Oh, I see what you meant now. No, I think that was just a reference to the existing Kindle library. Everything I've read today says you will be able to share content between K1 and K2 if they are on the same account, so I can't imagine a title not being available for both.

Just bumping this up for more discussion. I am on the fence about getting one and would like to hear more input by those who have one.

I just wanted to say that I also got my daughter the kindle during the $50 off time. She got it for christmas and loves it. She is the family bookworm. :goodvibes

Last week the screen stopped coming on and she called amazon. They asked for the order number and her account, they then decided it needed to be replaced. They next day aired her a new one and sent return instructions for the broken one. Funny story though, when they got the broken one they misunderstood and thought she was returning it for a refund. They refunded her the money, minus some reshelving fees. She had to call them and explain it. They thanked her and fixed it. I have to say this company was amazing with the return.
