Who Fartleked?: Putting the FUN back in the RUN - all the way to Goofy '09

Hello...

So the back thing just isn't going away as quickly as I hoped. Thankfully today is a scheduled rest day, but it looks like tomorrow might have to be one also. I don't think it is anything serious, but I just can't afford to play around with anything back related. I think it's just a muscle that is tight or knotted or pulled or something...per Dr. Amy's advice, I'm going to do some light stretching along with a lot of rest.

Kind of takes the wind right out of the ol' sails.

Hope everyone has a great day!

Hi Scott. So sorry to hear you back is bothering you. Believe me...I know how frustrating that is. It's still early in the game so it's good to rest and not push it right now. I hope it heals quickly and I'm sure your sails will be full of wind soon! :goodvibes

Hey Scott,

I'm so sorry to hear that your back is hurting. :( Please take it easy and do some mild stretching if you can.

Great prediction on the Super Bowl! That was an awesome game and I am so glad the Giants won!:cheer2:

Hi Scott,
An 8:53 mile is that what you said-WOW, that is awesome.I am impressed.
I hope your back is doing better, that is such a sideliner!

I bought the book Marathoning for Mortals so far so good but I will continue to pick your brain since you said you like to help ;)

How is the weather in your neck of the woods?Getting warmer yet, listen to me like you weren't warmer all winter-it is tough to stay positive around here the entire winter.

Keep up the great work,
Linda

*gets the searchlight out* Helloooooo Scott. :confused3

Check in once in a while buddy. ;)

Ok ok...

Sorry it's been a while, but I really haven't been up to much except working out and working. What have I learned over the past week or so? Let me take a stab...

  • The key to a successful long run? Whitesnake. Seems that refreshing my MP3 playlist has a direct correlation to faster and funner runs. Thankfully there weren't too many people on the trail Saturday when I howled like a wolf, doing my best David Coverdale impersonation when the first few bars of "Bad Boys" came up in the mix. :rotfl: Other adds included Faber Drive, Boys Like Girls and....um....maroon 5 :ssst:
  • I love the early morning action. Pilates that is...I was trying to do pilates before or after runs and workouts and it was really taxing on me. So I've moved my pilates workouts to first thing in the morning and I have to say I really like the change. I'm NOT a morning person, but I seem to respond well to the core workout after rolling off of the couch at 6am.
  • Salt packets < Endurolytes > gel packs = sport beans < pretzels > Powerbars which all gave me the courage to start but now are freaking me out about what's best for cramping and humidity and dizziness and water intake and instant death on the marathon course which is better than a dead last finish (or maybe that IS a DEAD last finish) :faint: Woah...confusing two different topics here...anyway...I haven't sorted it all out yet, but I realized that I drank way too much water on that Sunday in January. So this spring and summer I will experiment with the right intake of water, along with a good bar before the run and maybe more frequent gel pack usage during the run. (Remember when it was just about putting on a pair of shoes and running down the street? oh, the good ol' days)
  • All of the chaos over on the events threads has made me come to realize this....WISH started with a few people all inspired to finish a half marathon. WISH has now become an all encompassing organization filled with many different skill types and levels of athletes. I have my own opinions that I'll keep to myself about a lot of different things, but I do think the team needs to better accept the differences in each other and move on as one unit.
  • The shirts? Heck with the different designs...I'm coming out with my own line...more to come on this shortly ;)

So there you have it. As far as my training each week, it kind of looks like this:

Monday - Rest
Tuesday - AM pilates, 6 mile run
Wednesday - AM pilates, 30-60 minutes of XT
Thursday - 5 mile run
Friday - AM pilates, 30-60 minutes of XT
Saturday - AM pilates, 20 mile bike ride OR 60 minutes of XT
Sunday - 8 mile long run

Thanks for stopping by everyone...I hope all is well!

Amy - Great job with everything!! You are going to rock the Minnie Weekend for sure...can't wait!! Happy early Valentine's day by the way...

after rolling off of the couch at 6am.

You sleep on the couch???

I'm coming out with my own line

Biting the nails in anticipation...

Glad to hear all is well in your world! You week looks very solid! At what mileage do you start w/ the gels, powerbars and so on???

Hmmm...rolling off the couch! Is that a new pilates move? Kind of like rolling like a ball and front support all in one. Ahhh...a little dorky pilates humor for ya! Enjoy. And...wow...sleeping on the couch. Is that good for your back?

Thanks Scotty!

mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm Maroon 5. :cool1:

Hold on, I'm trying to think back to the days when I only needed to strap on my sneakers and head out for a run...........oh wait. I'm still there.

No joke, Scott. You're the real deal man. It sounds like your back is doing better. Can't wait to see the clothing line. :thumbsup2

Happy V-Day, Scott!

Your own clothing line, huh? Will we get the WISH discount? ;)

Great job on your workouts!:cheer2:

Good Morning :surfweb:

Please allow me to begin today's entry with a bit of a vent, a little rant about something that has truly become my nemesis. Something so frustrating to deal with as it sits there in it's little corner just waiting for me to approach it, fill it with yummy goodness and then get the finger in return.

Imagine waking up and looking forward to that one thing in the morning that gets your day started off right. That one key thing that the entire day's mood is dependent upon. Be denied that one thing and let the furor ensue...setting of an early morning rage like no other. Not having an alternate option to satisfy your morning nutritional needs...ending up going to work hungry, unsatisfied, undernourished and...well...just p%^$ed off.

Allow me to introduce you to my enemy:

Not once, but TWICE during the last few months these stupid little machines have burned out their stupid little motors, thus denying me the critical component in my morning routine...my strawberry banana smoothie.

Oh not just any strawberry banana smoothie, but one made with Antioxidant Advantage orange juice...the only juice so fortified with immunity defense that I could drink vials of the flu and remain unscathed. Not only is it the best breakfast one can consume, but the recipe came from a very dear friend of mine (who happens to have a plethora of the best recipes available anywhere) and it just tastes soooo good!

So anyway, there are a couple of smoothie makers that thought they got the upper hand on me by burning out their weak little motors...only to find me getting the last laugh in the backyard, having my fun by seeing how many different ways I could find to smash them into pieces :badpc: (think Office Space copier scene...only more violent)

And here I sit on another unfulfilled morning, denied of my smoothie goodness...pondering leaving the world of the inadequate smoothie makers for the rich, beautiful blender world that exists out there.

Oh great blender god, be good unto thee as I pledge my allegiance to you in hopes of many good mixes to come....:worship:

ok....whew....thanks for letting me get that off of my chest!! :)

So...I find myself having to trade today's run with tomorrow's elliptical workout. I've got some kind of thing going on with my left shin...I don't think it's splints or a fracture or anything but the darn thing has hurt now for a couple days. I feel that it's muscular related and I hope that another day of non-impact workouts will benefit it and I can get back out there tomorrow.

I can't stand being sidelined by injury  but at least I can still work out, burn off the calories and get some good cardio. :yay:

Also, I've been asked to address the couch comment :rotfl: Yes, I sleep on a couch and have for quite some time. It's very comfortable to me. I'm the kind of person who can pretty much sleep anywhere and have no negative effects from it (of course maybe it's the fact that I only do about 4-5 hours each night, thus preventing the ability for my body to stiffen up). Couches, unlike smoothie makers, treat me well and I have a fond affection for them.... ;)

Today's analogy :teacher: :
Whitesnake is to running as ________ is to elliptical workouts

Any guesses?

You are correct!!! Yes, Godsmack is the key to a successful elliptical workout! Their first album (the one before they got popular) provided an excellent backdrop to an hour long workout on the elliptical last night.

Ok, so I guess I'm done rambling for a bit...but I would be remiss if I didn't acknowledge that special person in my life on this special day:

Happy Valentine's Day, Dreamboat :flower3:

Makes you wonder, eh? :goodvibes
