Who books a cruise because it's a Star Wars or Marvel day at sea?

So my wife and I were discussing this the other day that even though we like the Star Wars and Marvel movies we wouldn't book a cruise just because of that. We book for the best price and itinerary. That being said we were wondering if other DCL cruisers feel the same way and really could care less about the special day at sea. 🚢

I feel the same as you. We will be going on our 3rd SW cruise next week. My dd and I aren't fans, I saw the first movies when I was a kid. My dd hasn't seen any, neither of us cares to see them. My dh has seen all of them, but isn't a huge fan. We did go to a few character meets last year. We don't plan on going to any this year, will probably play shuffleboard, golf, and MDA a lot on the SWDAS. The only reason we've gone on them is because Jan is cheap, we like to cruise in the winter(escape freezing weather at home), and we only do 7nights. Every time I book a cruise I'm tempted to book a Magic cruise, but I don't since it only does 5nights in the winter. Our 2021 cruise is booked for end of March, during dd's Spring break. I had originally booked it for Jan on opening day, but then switched to March. Dd is in jr high so we don't want to have her miss school anymore. The exact same cruise, WC on Fantasy in same cabin is costing almost $3000 more, Yikes!! I am happy that it shouldn't be a SW cruise, but the extra cost for being at Spring break is hard!! I would much rather go on one of the Turner classic cruises. Not sure if that's what they call them, have the old time movie stars.

We just booked out first Star Wars cruise that leaves on Feb 8th. I am looking forward to it but our DD isnt that into Star Wars but she loves Disney Cruises.

Single mom to 11 year old star wars fan - I can't cruise frequently so yes, I absolutely booked this for Star Wars and I booked the itinerary available during my son's winter break, which is Eastern. It's been on my bucket list for a while to do this for him and it has taken me a while to save for it. At 11 I feel he is the ideal age as he can still participate in the kid stuff like jedi training and a few select kid club activities, but is likely to be much happier in the tween club. My son doesn't care much about itinerary and I can find something fun for us to do in all of the ports.

I did book it before it was announced as SWDAS though assuming it would turn and it did, with a corresponding approximately 10% price jump. If you want to book it I highly recommend booking the typical time period before it is actually announced.

🙋🏻‍♀️
For me it was a major deciding factor. My kids were dying to do a SWDAS. I really wanted to do a 7 night after doing a 4 and 3 night, so if a SWDAS would check off a major wish for all of us, then bonus! However, I combined that with needing to get a FL resident discount and minimizing days off for DH and kids. The perfect combo was mlk weekend this year, making it only 4 days out of school for kids and 4 vacation days for DH. We got a great FL GTY rate so SWDAS here we come!

That would make sense if your son likes Star Wars. We were on the Magic last year for the Marvel day at sea and we were surprised how many people were in costume for that day.

We’ve done multiple cruises of each, but never intentionally. We always book opening day, so these features are not yet announced. We have no particular interest in either set of movies or characters, but enjoy the cruises nonetheless.

well star wars and marvel are two very popular (and profitable) franchises. They fill ships during the slow season with people who are cruising for that extra bonus. To me it's the best of all worlds but it was definitely a bucket list item for me to do for my son.

I’m assuming our Feb 2021 cruise will turn into SWDAS, but that isn’t the only reason I booked the cruise (have never been on Fantasy, wanted a 7 day cruise, etc) I will say it probably tipped me towards booking this cruise since my whole family are Star Wars fans. If our cruise doesn’t end up SWDAS I might change to a shorter cruise on the Wonder since we love that ship. So I would say it was just one of many factors and we definitely didn’t book it mainly for SWDAS.

In 2016 I gifted my husband a MDAS cruise at Christmas for the following November. It was a 7 night departing from NYC so easy for us to get there. We did not dress up, but we thought it was so much fun; we even purchased our photos from Shutters (we don't even have our photos taken normally).

This year we are doing a SWDAS cruise (@Trera --same cruise!) because my husband is a huge Star Wars fan. I love Star Wars, but he's at a different level than I. We booked the cruise after the theme was announced. It is actually working out well for us because we took our first cruise on the Fantasy this past November, and I was unable to enjoy it due to the pain from an injury I had incurred a few weeks prior to the cruise date. (We thought about canceling, it was that bad.) We're looking at this as a do-over, even though I am still feeling pain to a lesser extent.

No dressing up for this one, either.

If I were booked on a cruise that became one of those, I would probably cancel. ;) Ok, probably not because we are limited as to when we can take vacation time and we book for what works for us in that regard, but I would be very bummed out if it happened.

We booked our Jan 18 West Carib. cruise before the SWDAS theme was announced. We didn't cancel as you should never pass up free wookie.

I’m guessing my Magic cruise in the same month will turn into a Marvel one - especially considering that I was peeking at the things that can be purchased for the stateroom and there are 3 different Marvel options. Not my favorite, but at least I can tolerate it. At least I’m not going to be in NYC for a week in February! (With a day or so before and a day or so after the cruise.)

We’ve done three MDAS, and love them. The deck show is the most amazing thing DCL does. It helps that they have those on my favorite ship. Haven’t done a Star Wars cruise yet, but it’s on the books for next January.

I prefer non-themed cruises. Well, except for Christmas, those I like. So I wouldn't book a cruise just based on a theme.

We are absolutely planning on booking a SWDAS just because it is Star Wars! We normally cruise in September, but will book our next cruise to do the Star Wars theme. I mean, I also want to do the Eastern Caribbean, so it isn't the only draw, but my DH, my girls, and I are SW fans. My parents, who travel with us, are not really into it. No one is going to say no to a Disney cruise though!:darth:

We have our first MDAS cruise booked for next month and it was definitely one of the deciding factors. The first two were dates and itinerary, since we were looking for a vacation to fill a certain date range, but MDAS helped push us over the edge into choosing the Disney cruise over a different vacation. I'm a huge Marvel fan, and I also like dressing up and meeting characters in general so it looks really fun.

Plus, it's only one day. So even if you don't care or even don't like the franchise, you can avoid it (or just deal with it) for the most part on the one day that everything is happening.

We most definitely booked for the special day at sea. Having all the Character photo opportunities is a HUGE bonus for fans.

So were on one in February, and while my husband is a Star Wars fan what got us is that there are 3 sea days and we love sea days. And this will complete our grand slam.

We're on a Star Wars cruise in a couple of weeks. I didn't even realize it was one until I got the confirmation e-mail. I actually would have tried to avoid it if I could have but it fit with my schedule better than any others did. We're not really big SW fans so we'll just avoid some of the specific activities.
