Which rides to avoid for motion sickness?

I know which rides trigger my motion sickness at WDW, but I was wondering what I should avoid at DL and DCA. I have problems with anything that inverts (like the Rock-n-Roller Coaster), or spins (like Dumbo or Astro Orbiter). I can do the tea cups as long as I don't spin the cup - and yes, my family laughs at me. The simulation rides I'm 50/50 on. I can do Star Tours, but I remember the one time I rode Body Wars at Epcot years ago, and it was horrible, as was the Back to the Future ride at USF. I also can't do the intense version of Mission Space, and for some reason my motion sickness was also triggered on Dinosaur (it was so rough) and on Expedition Everest (just the going backwards part.)

Thoughts?

DL
I'd still try Indy, just to do it once, but I imagine it could be worse than Disnosaur which is similiar.

Roger Rabbits Cartoon Spin. The cars spin, like the teacups while it goes through a regular FL dark ride. This may be ok if you try to keep it from spinning.

DCA
California Screemin which the loop may stick out on, is a very smooth enjoyable coaster, I think it should be fine.

Silly Symphony Swings, probably not.

Golden Zephyr maybe.

Francis's Ladybug Boggie will be tough.

Indy is longer than Dinosaur, but less rough. I think you need to give it a try. It's far better than Dinosaur, imho.

Goofy's sky school. This is nothing like the Barnstormer. I would say it's more like Primevil Whirl, but no spinning.

The new version of Star Tours is fantastic. Just ask for a seat in the first couple of rows. They are a lot less bumpy.

Captain EO has moving seats. I ride EVERYTHING...the most intense roller coasters, etc, and I felt yucky after EO. Just don't ride on a full stomach.

The swinging cars on the Fun Wheel. Catch a video of this on youtube. My family agrees that this is the most thrilling and stomach churning ride at DL. It's the only ride I've seen with barf bags in the cars! edit...except Mission Space!

I've only ridden it twice, but I get very queasy on Soarin' Over California. The last time I was on there, I was able to beat the nausea by looking down and staring at the ground during the ride. Basically finding a focal point that wasn't "moving."

The NEW Star Tours that debuted this year is a lot harder for those prone to motion sickness...I used to be totally fine with it and I could only take one ride of it this year. I love Indy and at DCA I usually choose between TofT and HHH. I have no problem with Soarin'.

My husband has bad motion sickness and he won't do Star Tours at all, but loves TofT, Screamin and HHH . He will do Soarin' only once.

Given what you said about tea cups, I'd also avoid Roger Rabbit's Cartoon Spin (or go with someone that promises not to spin the vehicle). The last time I rode it was the last time I'm ever going to ride it - it set off my motion sickness worse than any of the roller coasters!

You might also be careful with Buzz Lightyear Astro-Blaster, again because the car can rotate (to let you aim better), but you can choose not rotate, so that might be okay. (I love this ride!).

California Screamin' has one big invert (loop), so you might want to avoid that one. I found it a little rough to ride, so I typically skip that one now.

Have you tried Soarin'? That's another simulator that you might want to consider skipping or waiting until late in the day. It's very smooth, but it's still a simulator ride. (No spinning or really jerky motions).

I also get bad motion sickness, as does my wife.

My absolute no-no's are:
California Screamin
Star Tours
Tea Cups
Silly Symphony Swings

Things that are kinda close to the edge, but I still do OK:
Dumbo
Soarin
Big Thunder

My wife and I love Indy, and never have any problems at all on it.

HTH,
Bob

I use Bonine for motion sickness and can ride everything after, even then Tea Cups!

Have you ever tried to use something for the motion sickness?

The rides that can set me off are:

Teacups
Dumbo
Star Tours
Astro Orbitor
Space Mountian
Roger Rabbit

California Screamin
Soarin Over California
Mickey's Fun Wheel (swinging gondola)
Silly Symphony Swings
Golden Zephyr

So weird, it's the total opposite for me.....I used to get sick on ST all the time but now I LOVE the new one!!!!! It's the BEST! I don't get motion sick on it at all, now that may be because I'm so excited about the ride and seeing where I get to go that I just don't think about it but either way, I don't feel sick on ST anymore. :)

In addition to others previously mentioned I avoid Space.....that one gets me every time. LOL I've never been sick from it but I get nauseous.

It sounds like you would benefit from a transdermal motion sickness patch. It's Rx-only but will allow you to enjoy the park to a fuller advantage. Also drink plenty of water on your trip and eat moderate amounts at one time.

Wow, you guys are awesome! I can ride a roller coaster with a loop as long as the coaster stays on the inside of the loop and doesn't flip you over when it goes through the loop. (Am I making any sense here?) I'll take a good long look at the California Screamin' one to see how exactly it goes.

I've never had any problems with Splash Mountain, Big Thunder Mountain, Tower of Tower (although I can't do it more than two times in a row), or Soarin'.

That's a good suggestion to take some Bonine with me. I will say that I tried it one time before I did the Rock-n-Roll Coaster and I still didn't feel well afterwards. I hate to think of how much worse it could have been had I not taken the medicine - :rotfl:

the loop on Screamin' is simply an up and over, there's no twist at all. You just go in a circle. :)

I get motion sickness as well but I take Bonine and that really helps a lot. I find that I can't be on a very full stomach, but even worse is having an empty stomach. I once rode BTMRR on an empty stomach which was rough, and then went on POTC and felt like I was going to barf the whole time. POTC! Ridiculous!

Since starting to use Bonine as suggested by some fellow DISers, I haven't had a problem. I still avoid the tea cups, Roger Rabbit, Silly Symphony Swings, Golden Zephyr, and close my eyes during some of Soarin', just to be safe (as I think those would be the worst). But the Bonine really helps.

Do you mean "flip you over" as in roller coasters where your feet are dangling? If that's what you mean, Screamin' is definitely not one of those coasters. The coaster stays inside the loop, and honestly you can barely feel it. The only part of my body where I "feel" the loop is my neck, which kind of bends forward a bit, but that's just gravity.

I have to agree with a PP that I used to be able to ride the old ST without any problems but the new one just messes with my head and gives me the WORST headache and feeling of dizziness. I think part of the problem is that it is in 3D now and I have always had headache problems when watching 3D things (don't go to 3D movies at all). So if you have any problems with 3D at all, be prepared for the new ST. Completely agree though with another PP that it is a lot smoother than the old ride.

I use bonine to avoid the motion sickness :) My tummy is pretty weak, so I was scared about how I would manage Disneyland.

My strategy:

Wake up, shower, dress, down a bonine. Wait 15 minutes. Eat a reasonable breakfast. Walk to Disneyland.

The bonine has usually started to take effect by now, so I can ride just about anything.

Come late snack time (4pm-ish), I grab a drink, a snack, and take another bonine. It says you can take 1-2, so I take 2--1 in the morning and 1 in the afternoon! We then go ride on something calm, or take in a show, giving the bonine another 30-45 minutes to work. I'm then (generally) good for whatever the evening holds.

Now, there is a caveat to this... at least for me! Star Tours totally made me sick both times I rode it. However, it was, likely, about the time the bonine was wearing off.

Without the bonine on board, I would get ill-feeling on: Star Tours, Symphony Swings, whatever that zephyr orbiter ride is next to the swings, the spinning of TSMM, and Soarin'... Oh, I loved Soarin', but hated how it made my tummy feel. I had less issue if I was on either outside, or in the center section, but the middle row (because I could see the people's feet above me, so I was better able to keep track of "real" space, if that makes sense. I don't remember what made me ill over at DL, other than Dumbo and the spaceship ride that is a bigger version of Dumbo.

The only ride I cannot handle at DL is Star Tours. I don't like simulator rides like that, but my kids begged me to with them. I had to close my eyes most of the time.

Beware of ToT, I experienced that ride but only once so far, but unless I take something for motion sickness, I will not be experiencing it again. I started off fine, but by the 4th or so drop, I would have liked to have gotten off of that ride. Thank goodness, the ride was but a few more drops away from being done. It took me an hour to no longer feel dizzy and lightheaded. If anything I might just walk through the queue, then before entering one of the elevators, I will make my excuses. I love the theming and decor, but not the feeling of getting sick.
