Which resorts can't you buy direct?

I thought Grand Californian would be a good direct buy since it has the lowest savings buying resale. However, now I've been reading that you can't even waitlist to buy direct. Does this apply to many other resorts as well? Even if you can waitlist, is the waiting period generally long? Are we talking weeks, months, or years?

Normally you can get any resort direct. Grand Californian may be the exception. At one time, they had no wait list for the Grand Floridian, either, but they have raised the price for VGF to the point where there is no a waitlist.

Currently, Disney has not been exercising ROFR during the crisis, so one of their sources to get older resort points to sell has dried up (maybe temporarily). The other source of points they can sell is foreclosures. Foreclosures can be for failure to pay the loan payment, or failure to pay the annual maintenance fees.

The waiting period is generally not too long. They will try to sell you the current resort. If you are firm, they will offer to put you on the list for the resort you want. Many have reported that they get a call back within a week or two with their points.

Right now, DVC Direct Sales is shut down, so none of this applies at the moment.
