Which naming trend is your least favorite?

Which naming trends do you dislike (you may choose more than one)

  • Traditional boy names given to girls

  • Replacing i's with y's

  • Giving all your children the same first initial

  • Giving surnames as first names

  • Giving a nickname as a formal name

  • Adding a bunch of extra letters just to make the name "unique"

  • Using old fashioned names

  • Apostrophes placed in the name for unknown reasons

  • None of these bother me

Why do you hate it when twins don't have twin names? You want to name your kids something that rhymes? Is that a twin name? Like Danny and Manny? When I taught, I had a set of twins, Antony and Antonio. Is that twin enough?

Personally, I like it when twins have regular names. We have twins in our family, and none of them have the rhyming names, they were all named after a different person, and well, they're treated more as individuals and not as part of a twin.

I don't like rhyming or "twinny" names, either. I had a Montel and Montez once in class.

I actually hate the new crop of trendy names. And I don't even want to say any of them, because I'm sure there are a lot of them on the boards.

What happened to 'real' names? Daniel, Joseph, Anthony, Robert, Jonathan, James, Catherine, Anne, Carolyn, Mary, Elizabeth?? What's with these (IMO) strange, trendy, goofy names??

**Notice I used my family names as 'normal'? LOL! **

ETA - My Joey and my Danny have been the ONLY Joey's and Danny's in their classes since they started school!! Names like Joe and Dan are now becoming 'rare'. It's weird.

In my son's school, there are at least 4 boys named Joey in kindergarten - first grade. I don't hear Danny much anymore, except there is one in our classroom this year (second grade).

I didnt vote because both my girls have names that fit into one or more options but they are not out there like some. They are Makenzie and Jordyn!

:) My sons both have surname names.

I don't mind either twin or non-twin names. Just don't name them the SAME name with different spellings. Like Catherine and Katherine.

I went to school with twins Yvette and Yvonne. I thought that was pretty.

taditional boys name used as girl names-->its fine when you use jamie or riley as a girl's name but when you take names like Joe or Adam and turn them into girls names its a bit weird

adding extra letters to the name--> perfect example, my name is Tara and Ive seen people spell it Tarra and Tarrra. 3 r's, is that really necessary:confused3 People also add a h to it all the time. Its such a simple name, why so many spellings

There's a girl in my dance company named Khatryiniya pronounced "Katreena." :lmao: Why so many extra letters?

I would have never got Katreena out of that!

I don't mind what other people name their kids...it takes a little while to get use to it but after that it's all good;)

My kids both have a name that starts with the same letter, so I guess I can't comment. ;) :rotfl:

I used to teach kindergarten, and the little girls who had traditional boys' names really wanted to have "girl names". My sister's students have included "Mona Lisa" and a name pronounced Fe-ma-lee......get it? The child's name was "Female". Her mother read the bracelet on her newborn's wrist and thought the hospital had named her child for her:sad2:

Last year, I read about a guy in our city who was arrested for distribution of crack cocaine. He has a common last name, but his first and middle names are Omegatron Ozone :rotfl: I'm not kidding!

I have a nephew named Anfernee, and I know how mad he gets when I call him Anthony. Almost as mad as I get when I think about the fact that my sister named him Anfernee.

In many languages, ö is a different letter that sounds different.

Good point! My youngest sons name is Jökull for example.

And Olivia is actually a pretty well known name in Denmark, but with a regular O and no dots above it. So not quite sure what that is all about.

I personally would not mind the I's, the strange/altered spellings and the apostrophes if people didn't get so annoyed when I misspell/pronounce their little dawlings name........ :confused3:laughing:

Name your kid what you want, but hey, own up to and accept the responsibility for the butchering that will take place.

I agree, if you chose to do one of the above poll options you give up the right to get mad if people misspell or mispronounce your kid's name :thumbsup2. That is what really bugs me--someone naming their kid Mychyiaeyl and then people not getting that it should be pronounced "Michael".

Unique spellings annoy me. Lyam, Leeam, Emmaleigh etc.

Me too. The first thing I think is that the poor parents didn't know how to spell.

I just got an email which I am sure has been around awhile. I checked in on Snopes and they have it as "uncertain".

Le-a.

LeDASHa. My, aren't we clever?

I think parents who do this and the unique spellings are desperately trying to show how creative or clever they are, and not thinking about the poor kiddo having to correct every pronunciation of their name for the rest of their lives.

Me too. I refused to give my kids names that rhyme or even have the same first letter.

I know a Richard Rider (last name is spelled differently to protect the innocent) and if you know the nickname for Richard it's actually very funny ;)

I know an Eckhzayvyhurr and a Vhirraunnekkah. Yes they are brother and sister. What a hot mess. I know a Le'mon and an O'Range (like Lay-mawn, and Oh-rawnj) and they are also Bro and Sis.

I LOVE "ghetto" names. Add "isha" after almost ANY word and you get a ghetto name, try it. It works.

I'm fine with most of them, but random apostrophes and letters are a pain in my book. Also giving your kids cutesie names that guarantee they will never be taken seriously in their lives.

In my hometown we have a family with the last name Pop. Their kids are Soda and Lolly. That is just plain cruel in my book. Could you imagine a President Lolly Pop? I can't imagine how hard it would be to be taken seriously with a name like that (and how many times they were bullied).

My DSIL's family is really big into repeating first initials. DSIL and all her siblings have names that start with the letter "D". She and my brother named all of their kids with "A" names. One of her sisters has children with all "C" names, the other used "B" names. It's a little weird when you look at all the names together -- I keep wondering if they only got through the first 4 chapters of a baby naming book.

I'm a substitute teacher in our school district and sometimes when I have to take attendance in some of these classrooms, I just want to cry -- between the multiple letters and strange spellings, apostrophes and made up names, I don't know what names I'm calling. In one class I had a Teshawn and Tejean, a Jasimyne (pronounced Jasmine) and an Atilayah (and I'm still not sure how that one was supposed to be pronounced).

My kids both have a name that starts with the same letter, so I guess I can't comment. ;) :rotfl:

My oldest two do too. It wasn't intentional - we just happened to like two names that started with S - but boy were folks surprised when we broke the pattern with our third! :lmao:

I'm a NICU RN, so over the years, I've seen a lot of "original" and "creative" names. These are some of the highlights:

-Just the past month or two, we've had Herman (an Asian baby), Sylvia, Miriam, Hazel and Vivian

-Twin boys named Mista and Masta

-A girl named Element, after a brand of skateboard (mom was 27 years old)

-My'Yia, pronounced My-Ana :confused3

-Twin girls born 16 weeks early... A'Miracle I and a'Miracle II
(always reminded me of thing one and thing two)

-Iamunique

-Tarantula

-The absolute worst....Placenta, for a preemie girl

Also, way too many Miracles and Nevaeh's (Nevaeh is heaven spelled backwards...we get at least one a month). Ugh.
