Which naming trend is your least favorite?

Which naming trends do you dislike (you may choose more than one)

  • Traditional boy names given to girls

  • Replacing i's with y's

  • Giving all your children the same first initial

  • Giving surnames as first names

  • Giving a nickname as a formal name

  • Adding a bunch of extra letters just to make the name "unique"

  • Using old fashioned names

  • Apostrophes placed in the name for unknown reasons

  • None of these bother me

Well, I've never heard Ralph pronounced that way. And I don't really follow the actor. So, whatever.

Wow. If it were me mispronouncing someone's name, I think I might appreciate the correction before I embarassed myself.

Is it bad the only time I've heard the name Rafe (Ralph) is in a wiggles video?

The only time I ever hear that pronunciation is when it's used as a short name or nick name of Rafael.

I wouldn't be embarrassed trying to pronounce his name. Ralf is the way Ralph is pronounced in America. I've certainly never heard Ralph Macchio's name pronounced as rayfe. As stated, I don't follow Ralph Fiennes carrer and I don't talk about him to people. So I will probably never care how his name is supposed to be pronounced unless I met the man.
If I'm introduced to someone, I will pronounce their name the way they pronounce it. But until I'm corrected, I won't know the actual spelling and I won't know the actual pronunciation of a printed name until I hear it.

The first time I heard it was on Andy Griffith. Remember Rafe Hollister?

I think he was the one who was afraid of shots.

My best friend and her husband was having trouble trying to figure out a name for their daughter (will be 10 in December) and because of hearing of this story for a while, they decided to name her Ramsey.:sad2: At least it wasn't JonBenet.

My new least favourite naming trend is naming your child after a child who was horrifically murdered:guilty:

Sorry, I never cared much for the show. The southern accent tends to grate on my ears and always has (no offense to southerners). So I never heard the name on there.

Tell me about it. When my friend told me about it, I was shocked. I now have to associate my God-daughter with that tragedy.:sad2:

I, personally, don't like location names, no offense. But hey, if you can call my son's name "boring" well then. I also don't like your daughter's name (again, no offense). Is it even legit? Too me, It sounds like a poison or a number. If I read it, I wouldn't know what gender she was. It also sounds like you made it up.

My Thomas is far from boring. When I think of someone with his name, I think of handsome, strong and smart. He is all of these things and so was my father who he isnamed after.

By the way, I love Marie-Claire. I find it beautiful and anything but ridiculous.
Your mother has good naming tastes, it must not be a genetic trait.

As pointed out below, Seren is a real name. It is Welsh as is my husband. I do personally find certain names boring, but I don't care that you would choose them. Good for you for making your own decisions. Also, I would like to clarify that I was suggesting that your son is boring, but the name itself. No offense intended as I believe I pointed out.

Surely I can't be the only one who finds this absolutely rude? :sad2:

Just so you know, Seren is Welsh and it means Star. Yes, it is a female name. You can look it up on several baby name websites.

Thank you. I have only just noticed that this thread is still going.

Replacing i with y has always bugged me. Adding a bunch of extra letters is a close second.

Absolutely true. And along the Irish lines, I have a neighbor that named her son Sean. She has had to just get past cringing when his name is called out, "SEEN". Ugh.:rolleyes1

Our son is Sean as well. We have the same issue here.;) He is 12 now and has given up on correcting anyone.

I voted for all the trends except - nick names and old fashioned names. Those don't bother me.
